An East Bay treasure for baked goods but be sure to be patient and go early for best selection on the fly. Time and patience are definitely a necessity visiting here, especially on weekends. Customers lining out the door and playing musical chairs for the few street-level parking spots directly in front are to be expected. Employees are more than preoccupied so if you have a phoned in pick-up order made and paid in advance, you will have to wait as well but not as long as the walk-in line at least. But the wait is well worth it as you will have the freshest breads and the flakiest of croissants. Tell your nutritionist they're a push over and the diet to kick rocks while you're here. I highly suggest their egg & ham croissant and quiche lorraine. Many overlook the parking lot at the rear of the building so I suggest parking there instead. read more

Absolutely love this place! I always stop here when visiting my CAL student. Street metered parking only. There is often a line, but it's worth the wait. Everything is freshly baked and very good, but my absolute favorite is their Morning Buns, so I'll often order just that! I have not come across another Morning Bun that I line any better! read more

I can't believe that a French bakery of this caliber is walkable from our home. The walnut levain is absurdly good- the best of our rarified local selection. The duck fat loaf is ridiculous- it could make bologna taste good. For breakfast- try the coriander scone. Coriander? Sounds so odd. But its unique flavor will have you craving it later. read more

Fournee is on your top 3 list of bakeries in the Bay area whether you like it or not. All the pastries have that top tier flaky and crispy perfection. Among my favorites are the ham and egg croissant (hella cute) must get!!! As well as the ham and manchego croissant and for all my croissant purists, the butter croissant reigns supreme. There's always a seasonal pastry that's worth asking about. Definitely get there early, even on weekday mornings expect to wait at least 20-30min in the queue. read more

Incredible croissants. Fabulous baked goods selection. The line moves quickly. The service is friendly.

Nabbed the very last canelé! It's just two people allowed into the shallow customer space owing to COVID. Expect queues. What a cute place. For me, my neighborhood butter haven would be Rotha, and thank goodness it's there for when the whim must be fulfilled! I used to enjoy their croissants, but of late, they look to be full of air. Tarts and breads don't disappoint though! read more

I am so glad that I made a preorder. The line was super line today, 5/8. I believe people are preparing for Mother's Day celebration. Croissant and canele are very good and fresh. Their price is not cheap but reasonable for the quality that I received. The preorder line which was basically no line. I was the first one then I guess the guy on the walk in line got upset about the fact. When it's my turn, he walked straight to the store without hesitation. Everyone can order in advance! Got a little bit of everything. The croissants were really flakey / crispy and the filling was good. My favorite was the ham and cheese. The one with egg is good but its just an egg *shrug*. Fournee never misses! It has one of the best almond croissants that I've tasted, but the fruit croissant and the chocolate are also delicious. My family also enjoys the quiches. Definitely check out this place if you have the chance. read more

One of the best bakeries I have been to, Fournee constantly has a line throughout the day. Their pastries, pies, and croissants are some of the best that I have had. The croissants are flaky, and they offer a variety of flavors. They also offer many different loaves good for sandwiches and appetizers. Highly recommend, and make sure you go early! read more

I think Fournee is a great option close to my house but just a tiny bit overrated. I've been multiple times and tried different items and every pastries was pretty good especially when fresh but honestly didn't blow me away. The people were nice and gave great recommendations. I think the location is great too but can be very hard to find parking. I would go back! read more

Absolutely top-notch bakery! We arrived around 7:58am (it opens at 8) and there was already a line around the corner. It was worth the 15-ish minute wait to get the goods. The place is small but as soon as you walk in you're hit with the smell of freshly baked bread and an array of gorgeous pastries, tarts, and treats to feast your eyes on. The layout works well as you can scour over the goods as you stand in line, so by the time you get to the cash you're ready to order. The service was efficient too, so despite many people ahead of us - most with LARGE orders - the line moves fairly quickly. Now let's get to the important part. There is no shortage of recommendations for what to order. Being only two people, we didn't have the stomach capacity to try everything we would've liked to. The quiches, fruit tarts, and cakes looked phenomenal. We went with a morning bun, pain au chocolat, and two cookies. The morning bun is like a mix between a perfectly buttery, flaky croissant, and a sweet brioche, covered in the perfect amount of cinnamon sugar. It didn't have a strong cinnamon flavor, but was the perfect sweet treat to start the morning and pairs well with a hot coffee. The pain au chocolat was also buttery and flaky, and the dark chocolate inside was rich. I will say, it was not the best I've ever had, and despite how appealing they look in the showcase, I'd actually suggest skipping this and ordering some of their more interesting offerings instead. It was still very good, but I believe their other treats are probably more impressive. The cookies could not be better. The perfect texture- chewy but not cakey, crispy but not dry, and the chocolate just melts in your mouth. We tried a chocolate chip hazelnut and a chocolate chip oat. They were both bursting with flavor without being over the top. And as a bonus, they're simply stunning. If you're into Instagram-worthy foods, these cookies do not disappoint the eyes. All in all, this is definitely worth the wait in line. Can't wait to go back and try some of the breads and other goodies! read more

I found Fournée Bakery when I was headed to hike from Claremont Reserve to Grizzly Peak, and I noticed a very long line for the bakery. It was wrapped around the corner! For better or for worse, now I always get Fournée pastries when I hike the Berkeley fire trails. I probably eat more calories than I burn while hiking but oh well (: ==FAVORITES== My favorite is the HAM & EGG CROISSANT ($5.75). It definitely catches your eye! The concentric circles from the pastry layers and ham are a work of art, the whole egg in the middle is like the jackpot of an Easter egg hunt. The herb bread crumbs top it off perfectly. I like how the egg isn't runny, so the pastry lasts until the next day and it's not too messy. This is probably the best savory pastry ever I've ever had :P The VANILLA BEAN & ALMOND CAKE ($5.75) sounds simple but turned out mind-blowing. The blueberries, tart lemon jam, and hints of herbal tones from the basil/mint/tarragon-infused cream all created a very nuanced flavor profile. The BROWNIE ($3.25) looks like a plain flat square, but it's difficult to go back to brownies at other places now. Fournée's interpretation is fascinating; the brownie is thin but dense and very chocolatey, with high-quality TCHO chocolate. The CHOCOLATE ALMOND CROISSANT ($4.75) was thoughtfully crafted and not just all sweet, which I feel like is typical of almond croissants. I loved the surprise of the chocolate in the form of a chocolate bar in the middle, rather than a spread. The PAIN AU CHOCOLAT ($4.25) was simple goodness, with a similar composition of an embedded dark chocolate bar. ==HONORABLE MENTIONS== I'm not usually a MORNING BUN ($3.75) person, but Fournée's version was so memorable with the delightfully fluffy texture and high-quality Ceylon cinnamon sugar. It seemed to have a hint of citrus too. The FRUIT SCONE ($3.75) is another staple that you can't go wrong with; it's a buttermilk-based scone layered with fresh local fruits. I'm also a fan of their cheesy savory items. The GOUGERE ($2.25) was an airy pastry with dense flavors from the the manchego and asiago cheese, rosemary, chives, and thyme. For a similar bread, the CHEESE ROLL ($3.50) is a craft levain bread with gruyere and manchego cheese, with a kick of pepper. As we were standing in line, someone recommended the PARIS BREST ($6.50), featuring pate a choux, caramel mousseline, cream, candied hazelnuts, chocolate, and lemon jam. It was rather creamy and probably the heaviest among everything I've tried here, but the flavors were great. As you can imagine, the croissants were amazing with the flaky craft pastry and creative fillings between the layers. The HAM AND MANCHECO CROISSANT ($4.50) makes a perfect breakfast with the smoky ham. The VEGGIE CROISSANT ($4) looked fascinating and is loaded with potatoes, snow pea pesto, and sumac. It tastes healthy (perhaps a bit too much so, after all the other guilty pleasures!) =OTHER NOTES= - Street parking can be a bit difficult, but you can usually find a spot in the surrounding neighborhood a short walk away - The staff are great! They are so helpful, polite, and efficient - The coffee is quite good. In true Berkeley fashion, they have several milk options (including oat milk!) for self-service - I appreciate the COVID precautions limiting the number of customers inside - Pricing is very very reasonable. In these days with several fancy high-end patisseries serving $10 bite-sized cakes and $6 croissants that are sometimes mediocre, I think that the price, quality, and meticulous attention to detail at Fournée is a steal Fournée means "batch", and everything I've had tastes like the best batch. Everything about it is very Berkeley: it's a locally owned small business using high-quality ingredients sourced directly from farmers markets, and the end product is so amazing that it's totally worth the day trip trek to Berkeley. read more

Two new goals in life: 1. find all the small businesses I adore and support them during this terrible time of pandemic. 2. Fill my body with the world's most delicious pastries as a #coping strategy. Fournee Bakery happily satisfies both goals simultaneously! This fabulous French bakery is located just by the Claremont Hotel, and is a favorite place for hikers and bikers to stop after a day exploring the hills. They serve up delicious confections, brownies, cookies, cakes and pastries, and the best croissants I've ever had. They are open during the shelter in place mandate, and on weekends have a line wrapping around the corner, everyone standing the requisite 6 feet apart wearing masks. Despite the fact that it feels like a scene out of a dystopian, futuristic sci-fi film, the treats at the end of the line make them worth the wait. The famed Fournee has been on my list for ages! I'm so glad I got to go last week - the chocolate almond croissant was life-changing!! The chocolate croissant was fine (a bit airy) - I prefer the one by the midwife and the baker. The ham and cheese croissant was also just fine (maybe I'm not a savory croissant person). The walnut bread was delicious but at $12 a loaf is super pricey. But none of this matters because the chocolate almond croissant was amazing! I can't wait to go back and try this. I went on a Thurs AM - there were about 10 people in front of me, but the line moved pretty quickly. read more

I'm from out of state, and was initially skeptical about the hype around Fournee's croissants - I'd had some decent (but generally underwhelming) croissants in the past, and usually didn't go out of my way to pick them over other pastries. But, on a Saturday morning before going hiking in the area, I decided to stop by. I arrived at around 9:15 AM and waited in line for 15-20 minutes. After a lot of debating about what to try, I ended up going with the ham and egg croissant. My first bite of the croissant was honestly life-changing. The perfectly crisp and flaky exterior combined with the light and buttery interior gave the perfect explosion of flavors and textures. The addition of the salty ham and the full hard-boiled egg in the center made the pastry super unique and offset the flavor of the croissant perfectly. It was by far one of the best things I've eaten in my recent memory. While the croissants are the star of the show, I also tried the bakery's chocolate salted caramel tart on a different visit, and I was extremely impressed by that as well. I will definitely be back next time I'm in town to try more delicious pastries!!! As an additional boboth times I've been here, the staff have been notably friendly and helpful. TLDR: Go to Fournee. Get the ham and egg croissant. You won't regret it. read more

I got a box of maybe eight baked goods for the office and everyone liked it. I ate my ham and cheese croissant on the 22min Bart ride over from Rockridge to Embarcadero. My boss liked the canele, and a coworker expressly enjoyed the walnut and coriander scone. I can't comment on the others, but they were gone. I come here once a month after a tennis bout at the Claremont across the street. Please pay for parking when you visit, meter maids highly vigilant. But there's street parking up the hill. Everyone smiles and you'll notice a puppy patiently waiting outside. I let the puppy before I go in for good luck. Weekends are mad busy and everything good is gone by noon. They only have loaves of bread left at that point. There's no inside seating but the Peets next door has a nook. read more

Ever since I discovered this place I have been regularly coming every week, especially treating myself after hard exams and practicals as a student. Over the course of my visits I've tried the hazelnut cookies, croissant, ham & egg roll, cheese roll, veggie croissant, and almond croissant. Everything is so well crafted and absolutely delicious. I love how they have many savory breakfast options and I am a huge fan of the egg & ham roll which has a baked in egg with a tasty herb bread crumb layered on top. The middle bites are insanely good. All the croissants are perfectly flaky and light. I can't say enough good things about this place and hope they continue to keep making such amazing baked goods. read more

This is now one of my favorite bakeries in the East Bay! I came here on a Saturday morning for the first time. There was a long line that stretched all the way out to the sidewalk. The wait was actually pretty long since everyone in front of me got out of the bakery carrying bags and boxes of pastries like it's the end of the world. Workers there are very nice and service is fast. Plain croissant (5/5) Perfectly baked and evenly layered with buttery deliciousness. It has a very crispy top and a good chewy dough on the inside. The butter flavor is nutty and flavorful. Pain au chocolat (4/5) Wish this is more crispy but it has a nice chewiness to it. The chocolate is not too sweet and I could taste that it's a high quality one. Canelé (4/5) Wish the outer layer is more crispy but overall it's a good canelé. The outer layer is perfectly caramelized; I love that I could taste a hint of burned caramel flavor. It's not too sweet and it's baked with real vanilla bean so it has a very fragrant vanilla flavor. It's a bit dense at the bottom as there's less pockets of air. read more

If I could write a love letter to their almond croissants, I would. But honestly everything here is such a hit. When I came here with some friends for the first time, there was a guy and his daughter in front of us who gave some great recommendations: we got the classic croissant, almond croissant, hazelnut cookie, a cheese pastry, and the ham+egg croissant. Everything was so. good. Think flaky, buttery, mouth-watering goodness. The guy in front of us was also nice enough to pay and treat us for our first time at fournee!!! This used to be my go to spot for pastries but I have to admit that others have come along to challenge this spot's place in my belly. Hmmm... I'm thinking I must've just tried the wrong thing. All of the glowing 4 and 5 stars reviews are what brought me here in the first place. Fournee Bakery has been a Berkeley staple for many years, and I was finally able to cross it off of my bookmarks. The shop is located off of Domingo Ave in a tiny strip mall located right across the street from the Claremont Hotel. One thing I can attest to is the smell. It smelled so friggin' yummy in there! All of those baked goods sitting behind that glass looked insanely beautiful. I came on a weekday during the early afternoon, so it was perfect because there weren't many people inside. Fournee is known for their bread, and more specifically for their croissants. I totally would have gotten one, but it was lunch time for me so I wanted something more filling. Decided to get a ham and cheese sammy along with a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie. I will note that the sammies are all pre-made here. I guess I just assumed that they'd make them fresh, but that's not the case. I still purchased one anyways because I don't mind pre-made sandwiches. The problem with this sammy though was that it was cold. A warm ham and cheese sandwich would be perfect, but they said that they unfortunately couldn't heat it up for me. The baguette bread felt like it was rock hard when I tried to bite into it. The sandwich comes with herb butter, but it wasn't melted and it was only spread on one side which made it taste dry. They only put 2 little pieces of cheese and 2 thin slices of ham on the sandwich. Um... that ain't no sandwich! That's a piece of bread... with a few slices of meat and cheese on top. To make matters worse, this "sandwich" was hella tiny! You definitely need more than just one of these to fill up. But at $7 a pop, that's just too pricey to purchase two when one should be enough. The chocolate chip oatmeal cookie was scrumptious. But for $2.25, it too was really small. I mean, I know I'm paying for the "quality" but I just feel like it's overpriced. There are two other bakeries down the street that also make delicious cookies and pastries, and the cost to size ratio is much more effective... just sayin'. So like I said, maybe I just chose the wrong thing. Maybe I should stick with their croissants and breakfast pastries. But for my first experience, I just wasn't blown away. Hoping to have a better experience next time around because I'd love to add to all of those 4 and 5 star reviews. read more
