We have been meaning to dine here for quite some time and we finally made it. If I had to characterize this restaurant, I'd call it a diamond in the rough. You just don't expect to find fine dining in such a rural setting. We arrived a half hour before our reservation (must have) being that we were coming from so far away. We were told our table wouldn't be available until close to our reservation time. No problem. Four Roses has a very nice bar. My wife had a glass of wine and after perusing their pretty impressive bourbon list, I ordered my drink. First observation-bourbon and wine very reasonably priced. I also like the fact they had large cubes so I could enjoy my drink before it got watered down. Cubes were perfectly clear as well. We were shown to our table about ten minutes early and started to review the menu. Four Rose's menu has many staples but changes often adding specials. Our server came by quickly and answered our questions. We had many as there were so many great dishes to consider. Rolls right out of the oven were also brought to our table. My wife ordered White Fish Grenoble and I had the Maple Mustard Baby Back Ribs. I didn't care for the vegetables offered so I substituted rice. My wife was not overly impressed with her choice calling it very bland with almost no flavor. She loved the vegetables however. Portions were large-just not to her liking. My ribs were excellent. The maple mustard sauce was so good I asked my server for more. We both thought the rice was brittle - perhaps overcooked. Four Rose's is also known for their deserts and we were tempted. I had amaretto coconut creme pie. Excellent. My wife loves toffee pudding so she was excited to try it when she saw it on the menu. Unfortunately it was more of a toffee bread pudding then actual pudding. The server quickly took it off the bill when she returned and saw it was barley touched. My wife and I went to Four Roses Cafe again last night. Again it was fantastic!! They never disappoint. Our server Molly was friendly and attentive despite is being busy out on the patio. Which is a covered area (so the evening sun won't beat down on you) that's a nice change from inside. The food was out of this world. We had two new menu items. My wife had the corvina (a mild white fish like sea bass) with pistachio and apricot crust, with grilled veggies and rice. The fish was cooked to perfection! So yummy!! I had the seared scallops with bacon and a corn "sauce" that was out of this world! The scallops again were cooked to perfection. Tender and juicy. Not fishy at all! We both had drinks that were both very good. I would highly recommend Four Roses Cafe. It's a bit of a drive from Mattawan / Kalamazoo but so worth it! Stopped in for a birthday dinner last night with my husband. We had a reservation reservations at 6:45 PM and were quickly sat in a booth. Our waitress was very friendly greeted us offered us drinks, my husband got a beer and water for me. We looked over the menu and asked for recommendations. My husband ordered the big Lake breeze beef, and it came with a scoop of sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, and green beans. The meat was so tender he could cut it with a fork and he licked the plate clean. I ordered the chili wrapped flank steak with Gorgonzola cream and jalapeño relish. I was asked if medium rare is OK for the steak, but when it did come out, it was more on the rare side. The jalapeño relish was not too spicy, the meal really was delicious. we can never visit without getting dessert! my husband ordered the peanut butter pie, it was a huge portion and he absolutely loved it. I ordered the ice packs lemon pie, which is more of a custard, and it came with the homemade whipped cream. It was very good. We can never leave without getting a piece of the traditional cheesecake to go. I couldn't believe how busy the restaurant was for Wednesday night. I was glad that we had a reservation. We had a wonderful family dinner here while I was in town visiting for the weekend. Everyone enjoyed their entrees, our waitress was attentive, and the dessert was amazing! We got the BBQ quesadilla and mesquite beef skewers as appetizers, which were very tasty. For the main, I ordered the rosemary & honey mustard chicken with jasmine rice and mixed veggies. Highly recommend leaving room for dessert. The chocolate ice cream cake, peanut butter pie, and tiramisu were our top three favorites - but I could have easily ordered half the menu. read more

We had heard lots of really great comments about this restaurant from our friends and acquaintances. We made an appointment for a couple of weeks after my wife's birthday. We arrived on time and were quickly seated. The drink order was taken when the menus were handed to each of our party. My wife had the Whitefish, as well as my stepson's girlfriend, I had the Big Lakes Braised Beef and my stepson had the Pork-chop. My Braised Beef was super tender and very flavorful. As were the fingerling potatoes. The vegetable mixture was just so so, and we were all agreement with this assessment. The whitefish was exquisite and flavorful . The ladies exclaimed over this dish. And my stepson as well was very pleased with the Port Chop, exclaiming it was the best chop he's ever had!! For dessert we ordered a slice of carrot cake. It was to die for, truly!! The frosting was absolutely scrumptious, and I hate most frosting! The cake itself was super moist and flavorful. Another best there ever was created!! Time to say farewell to an old friend. We know that this place is well loved by many, however I find I no longer wish to eat here. We stopped into Four Roses today to celebrate an anniversary with expected excellent food. We have had great experiences in the past. I ordered the rainbow trout and my spouse requested the beef fillet. We were both disappointed with our food. My fish was an almost dry fillet with little flavor and a few capers thrown on top. Her fillet was disappointing in size and tenderness for the $25 price tag. We had also been plated a carrot and green bean dish but the beans were quite raw and very crunchy. Everything is beyond 5 stars every time! Food, service, and staff are fantastic! We come every weekend for date night and get the same order because they are phenomenal every time. Whitefish cakes, house salad, house rolls (divine!), chill rubbed flank steak with Gorgonzola cream sauce and jalapeño relish. The Guinness chocolate cake will blow you away, along with the house made caramel sauce! We always get in the waitlist and the table is generally ready within 5 minutes. Having over 50 years of high end dining experiences and working for an exclusive country club as catering sales and social director, I have high (some say unreasonably high) expectations as a patron of self proclaimed "fine dining" establishments. With that said...I was beyond impressed!! From my first phone call, to make a dinner reservation (on the day of) for a table of 5 for my birthday, through to the most delectable dessert (huge selection of fresh, pastry chef created desserts), the service, entrée, appetizer and martini was out of this world. And the ROLLS. Warm, soft and beyond delicious. When we looked online at the menu and saw the prices; at first it was a real "eye roll". WORTH EVERY CENT! Very generous portions for every course. The feedback I would offer on the haricot vert (green beans).is they were not just al dente but very hard to bite into. Fingerlings not flavorful and mostly tasteless. Minor details when looking at the total meal and experience. We asked that the lighting be dimmer and our amazing server, Taylor was pleasant and accommodating. In fact, every motion and explanation of menu items was kind, pleasant and professional. When she approached the table, she was respectful before speaking and did NOT just breeze by with an intrusive screech of "everything ok guys?". Frankly, we tip more when a server is available and not overbearing. She was a 5 star server! Offering to pack our leftovers for us in the kitchen with a note on the box stating what was inside and a "happy birthday" on mine. A lit candle came out on my HUGE portion of tiramisu. Then the remaining desserts came to thd table that were also very generous in size and better than the usual "homemade". Cheers to the pastry chef and ALL the chefs in the kitchen. And, most of all, to the owners that clearly are committed to quality and integrity. Knowing that our server has been in your employ for 14 years speaks volumes! So I've been here before...15 or so years ago. I loved it then and I'm am still impressed. Starting with the reservations, We called Thursday all the reservations were full but the hostess recommended going to the website to get on the waiting list. That worked like a charm. We were seated at the bar and 15 minutes later we had drinks and we're seated. Nice! The waitress was knowledgeable and happy to know we were celebrating not 1 but 2 birthdays, my wife and I. Cool, no rush at 7:30 p.m. I enjoyed a bottle of Cabernet from Washington State, my wife, an Arnold Palmer. Order went in with suggestions. My wife wanted the special salad (walnuts, Chevre cheese etc. ) good stuff. I ordered asparagus mushroom soup. Very good not to heavy, and the last bowl. Hmmm..... Dinner was simple. I the perfectly cooked and sliced Flank steak with a Gargonzola cream sauce. Whoa. But wait, it has a jalapeno relish which only Jalapeno lovers would love (me). My date had a Sword Fish entree with a Rosemary Aoli, which she thought was delicious. I tried it and it was moist (not dry) and had a nice rosemary flavor..Nice. On to dessert. I could not eat dessert but said I'll try an Irish Coffee. My date had the Black Bottom Pie, a standard dessert that has never failed at 4 Roses. It was very fluffy and lots of chocolate over some type of Graham PIe Crust . Delish but again I am not a dessert guy. My date went to speak with a friend sitting at the bar, I not tasting any whiskey in the after dinner drink, must've appeared dismayed. Our server asked how I liked it and I told her. She took it away and had it redone to my liking. Yay! That was very attentive. So the dinner was great, they corked my half of bottle of wine and my date had dessert for the next day. All in all a great dinner. But, no 5 stars. As I noticed almost all the chefs has beards but not beard covers. That was my only negative critique but not the end of the world. Four Roses is a place you really should try if you're in Plainwell or anywhere near. The building is very clean, the staff seems to be friendly and know what all of the entree's are which is a plus. Their beer, wine and cocktail list is usually pretty impressive. You'll notice that their menu is on a chalk board only. There are 3 of them located around the restaurant so that from any seat you're able to view a menu. Their dessert menu is also on a chalk board but the waiter or waitress will bring that to your table for you to view and choose from. My favorite salad is a Grilled Romaine. It can be an entrée or a side. I typically order if before my meal. Most of the items on the menu are always on their menu. However, their sides that an entrée is served with might change based on the season. They also have a fish/seafood option that will change based on their availability. They do sell out of things sometimes so you might miss out on something you may have been hoping to get. My favorite entree's are Whitefish Grenoble, Northwoods Rainbow Trout, Bell's Braised Beef or any steak such as the Ribeye or Filet. My favorite appetizer is the BBQ Chicken Quesadilla (this is also an option to be an entrée so it comes with a side). Be sure to save room for dessert. If you don't, GET IT TO GO! Their dessert menu is really large. My all time favorite it the peanut butter pie. It has a buttery graham cracker crust with a fluffy peanut butter and whipped cream filling. It is out of this world! That alone takes the prize for this place. I've also had the black bottom pie, bread pudding and carrot cake (also outstanding!). We've even came just to have coffee and dessert, it is that good! Keep in mind that it isn't a huge place and they do NOT take reservations. read more

Ok no picture because there are already so many that accurately represent what they serve. I had the Chili Ribbed Flank Steak with Jalapeño and my wife had the Grilled Chicken Fig on Humus. Both were excellent. My steak was cooked perfectly but what made it exceptional was the jalapeño salsa on top. All fresh ingredients, sliced peppers with onions and tomatoes. October provided Four Roses with deliciously ripened tomatoes. The tomato made this delicious beyond expectation. read more

I made a trip up to Grand Rapids the other day and on the way back decided to stop here for lunch. I arrived about five minutes after they opened. First impression was dark and dated. When the hostess seated me she told me the menus were on black boards or I could scan the QR code she gave me to get to the menu on my phone. My waitress came to the table and took my drink order. I ordered the MI Cherry Old Fashioned ($13). It had a Long Road wheat whiskey, bitters, Cherry liqueur, and a quarter slice of orange. I did not care for this drink, very boozy of course because it is an old fashioned but I am a bourbon girl so I must not have cared for the flavor profile of the whiskey. I ordered the Bourbon Glazed Salmon w/Bacon Hollandaise and it cones served with a veggie mix and white rice. She brought my meal and I immediately thought it was a very small portion of salmon. Also it appeared that the hollandaise slid off into the veggies. I really loved the flavor of the bourbon glaze! The rice and the veggies were really bland although cooked properly. On to dessert as they said they were known for it. I ordered the Chocolate Cherry Tiramisu and also ordered the Rum Raisin Pecan Pie to go for the hubby. I also ordered a cup of coffee with cream. My dessert came and it was a big piece. I did not really care for it because I really like the flavor of the coffee in a tiramisu and adding the cherry and chocolate really masked that. I tried the hubby's pie and I liked it much better. He liked both of them, he finished the other half of mine. Our new favorite date night location! Also great just to pop in and grab a couple drinks. Full bar with handcrafted cocktails. Menu was all delicious. A few things were 86 - which to me is a good sign food is fresh and people like it! We got the whitefish cakes, filet minions, and Kentucky bourbon dessert! Great ambience, we sat inside and it was a little loud but nothing crazy. Patio looks nice and will probably try that next time. Very large dessert menu as well if you have a sweet tooth! read more

Wow! What a find! We had reservations and were immediately seated. The restaurant is a little loud but it was very busy. It's clean, comfortable and boasts local art for sale. This place really seems to be the talked about restaurant in the area. We showed up early after hearing so much about the wait times. We got right in at 4:30. Our server Taylor, was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. My wife and I both had the house salad with candied nuts and a nicely made house dressing, which we both will order every time we return. So good. I tried the pan fried trout with capers and my wife had the chicken with prosciutto and mushrooms. Everything was very good. The portions are very good for the price but we wanted to try dessert. We shared a salted Carmel cheese cake which was more than enough for the two of us. My only complaint was just as our dinner arrived a birthday party of 14 was seated right by us and the volume in the room went from quite to very loud very quickly. read more

So much hype about this place, and I have to say, for a very good reason: it is FABULOUS! Husband started with their grilled romaine lettuce salad, with balsamic vinegar reduction and blue cheese dressing and loved it! For his entree he chose the flank steak with gorgonzola cream...simply mouth watering! (I will admit to taking several "samples" of his meal) The marinated veggies they put on the steak were delicious as well. I opted for their steak salad and I have to say, that steak was to die for! The dressing it came with (a vinaigrette) was super tasty but I asked for an extra side of their homemade blue cheese dressing as well. Dessert was their sticky toffee pudding. Oh. Man. Un-real. I had herd great things said about this place. First time we went by, was 2 plus hour wait, so went elsewhere. Next time about 45 minutes. So plan for a wait, or call ahead and ask. Nice atmosphere, staff was nice and kept up on drinks and checking on food etc. Place was clean and well lit and decorated nicely, signage inside was colorful and easy to read. I ordered the Duck breast, and the wife ordered the Smoked Mushroom Mac & Cheese. I got the duck cooked medium and it was coked perfectly, but the meat had some gristle which I did not expect or like, and the persimmon sauce tasted very little of persimmon. My wife reported the Mac & Cheese sauce a bit plain and just ok. Now the desert was a game changer! I got the raisin and rum pie it was the best I ever had, plump and tasty raisins, crunchy crust and flaky pie crust, and the wife loved the peanut butter cheese cake, it was light and tasty, and not overpoweringly peanut buttery like a lot of peanut butter cheese cakes are. Over all I will be back to try again on the dinner and looking forward to the Deserts. read more
