Four Roses Cafe is kind of an unexpected find for a place just off of the highway in Plainwell. The food is very good and there is a large selection of beers and wines to choose from. Yes, there's Four Roses Bourbon too. The atmosphere is quite casual but the food is elevated above what you're going to find in most casual restaurants. And as good as the food is, the dessert menu is the real star of the show. Lots of interesting and delicious choices there. read more

The ambiance was very magical when I walked in. Reminded me of a old classic formal casual dining room.. The food was phenomenal beyond my expectations. I was expecting just basic and it was beyond good. The talent and the kitchen is very good. As far as the service though, it seemed like the staff was under trained. If I had to choose between giving 2 weeks to train a dog or the current staff that was there. I would choose the trained dog. Wasn't very relaxing. It was very noisy. The space was overcrowded. Went there to celebrate our anniversary. We had been here a few years back; and I recall it being a more upscale evironment. We weren't asked about seating, just put in a booth that resembles Denny's back by the kitchen door. The food was good, and the waitress was super friendly. The main complaint we have is that it is brightly lit, has more of a diner feel now(I think they did some renovations), and they sat a group of 10 right next to us that was so loud and disruptive that we couldn't hear eachother talk. My siblings and I are foodies. We had heard good things about Four Roses and decided to check it out. The food was amazing and so we're the cocktails. We shared the calamari. The coating was light and crisp; not heavy or greasy. My sister had the trout dinner that had two large fillets, and my brother had the maple ribs. The ribs were tender and the sauce was tangy. I had the Bills Beef. Chunks of brisket slow cooked. Had it been winter time it would have been the perfect dish. However with summer I wished I had a steak. Definitely get dessert. Twenty four to choose from. We had the carrot cake, lemon chess pie and toffee cake. One dessert can feed 2-4 people. read more

I love the BBQ Quesadilla anytime of the day. My most favorite is the dinner time Chilli Rubbed Flank Steak. I can't get enough of that dish! The service is always great and personable. It has a very good vibe especially hanging up at the bar. read more

You know a place is good when it is packed at lunch on a Friday. Let me tell you, Four Roses knows what they are doing. They have top quality food that you would expect at a "fancy" restaurant, but for very affordable prices. This ratio of great food to great prices is very hard to find and I was happy to find it at Four Roses Café. They have a great hand crafted menu that has something for anyone and my wife was able to find two vegan options which is way more than most places in the area. Whether you are looking for lunch or dinner Four Roses is the place to go. Like I said, it was full at lunch so I can imagine that it is very full for dinner. Worth the drive! I heard so many good things about Four Roses that it has been at the top of my list to try for sometime. We heard it gets very busy and the wait can be long so we did the "get in line" on their website before we went. We only waited about 15 minutes once we got there. If you have parties of 6+ you can make a reservation. They have an extension drink menu with bottles of wine, signature cocktails and beer. Our server Taylor was fantastic. She was very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. We started with the bone marrow and baked brie. Both were served with toasted buttered bread. They were both good, it was not the best bone marrow I have had but still something fun and different to have. I ordered the duck which was prepared med. Rare and perfect in my book. My husband has the NY strip and also enjoyed it. We have heard you must save room for dessert and I will tell you, you must save room for dessert as it was delicious! They have 20+ desserts to choose from. Our party of 4 each got a different dessert and most of shared, haha. The peanut butter pie hands down was amazing! Always love the food here! The Bell's Braised Beef is fabulous. Serving sizes are more than enough. Save room for dessert because they are worth it! If you eat too much, you can always get a dessert to go. The service has always been great and timely. The only problem I've found is that it's quite noisy & sometimes hard to hear conversations. Their website says that they take reservations of ANY size (it's capitalized on their website). I just tried making a reservation for 17 for a wedding party and was told that a reservation for 12 was the most they take. I was asking for a date in the middle of June. Highly disappointing. I've eaten there numerous times and have taken my friends there to introduce them to the restaurant. I don't think I'll be doing that any time soon. read more

This was a great place to eat for dinner! The appetizers were amazing, I recommend the brie. I got the soup which was great. For my entre I got the Steak Ramen, which was very good. Visited Four Roses on Saturday, September 12th. My mother scheduled a reservation, which is currently required, so we could celebrate my sister's birthday. We had 11 people and they were able to set a couple of tables close together to accommodate us. It was a comfortable setting and our server was very capable and handled our group efficiently. Everyone essentially had a house salad which was very substantial and included greens, apples, blue cheese, candied walnuts and a homemade honey dressing. We had homemade dinner rolls, and butter. A variety of entrees were eaten. Personally, I had a chicken breast with bursin sauce, rice and the house vegetables, which they called "summer succatash", a blend of squash, beans, and tomatoes that were grilled and had some flavorful seasoning. I intentionally kept my choices relatively light, even though it made me envious of family member who ordered the New York strip, or the maple mustard babyback ribs. They looked much heartier, but my mother had mentioned that the restaurant was particularly known for its dessert options that were unique and numerous. They offered them on a chalk board and there were at least 20 choices of a wide range of options. Cheesecake was my choice (chocolate brownie, peanut butter cheesecake. I couldn't find one word that I didn't like.) As my family finished, we wished my sister a happy birthday, and continued the conversation talking about when and how we could find a way to return and enjoy the Four Roses, again. read more

Once in a great while you find a place that is more than a restaurant. You walk in looking for dinner and what you find instead is a dedication to epicurean delight. This is a rarity in a small town restaurant and should be rejoiced. First and foremost I recommend you use the Yelp online check in. The wait on Friday night may be an hour otherwise. So the first thing to note is that the menus are written in chalk on a wall. Zeroxed copies of the paper are placed at your table when seated. The ingredients are local where possible or of high quality when not local. I mention the menu because it means that much of what is available may change quite frequently. Fear not. Everything is thoughtfully prepared with an amazingly sensitive tongue. We had a Curry Soup made of blended acorn squash, coconut milk, and a yellow curry sauce. The flavor profile was something between a Thai Gang Garee Curry and an Indian Yellow Curry, as the coconut milk taste was very subtle. The appetizer was gournay cheese stuffed portabello mushrooms. Gournay cheese is a soft French cheese that is mixed with herbs. It's closest counterpart in the states is probably soft cream cheese. The mushrooms were drizzled in olive oil, sprinkled in italian dry seasonings, and then topped with a generous helping of the soft cheese. It was placed in the oven to cook, and is then topped with italian stewed tomatoes and a sweet balsamic vinaigrette. The result is an ensemble of flavors where you can clearly identify 5 or six quality ingredients, and yet not have the ingredient's wonderfulness muddied by their marriage. The main courses consisted of Mustard Maple ribs, and a Peach BBQ pork. The ribs were tender, and amazingly thickly cut for pork ribs. The sweet maple sauce was combined with other more conventional bbq flavors to such a degree that the flavor of the mustard and maple syrup remained beautifully balanced. The peach bbq pork was surprisingly not a pulled pork. It was a perfectly sliced smoked pork steak with a small fat cap on it to indulge if you so desired. The peach bbq sauce did not have sweetness as it's main flavor. It was a sauce that combined vinegar, Worcestershire, peaches, tomato puree and other spices into a whimsical blend of west Texas and Memphis BBQ. For desert we ordered the Peanut Butted Pie and the Chocolate Cake. We ordered these two for their ability to travel well. Needless to say they both delivered on flavor and decadence. Wow!!!!! When i first heard of this place I thought I was going to a little cafe in the middle of nowhere. Little did I know I was going to a restaurant I was going to knock my socks off with quality of food and desserts. This is definitely a Place worthy of the title... "Bucket list destination" and a must do ,worth the long drive to the middle of nowhere. The easiest way I can describe how to do this would be a short weekend trip to Traverse City or one of the casinos it WILL BE WELL WORTH your time!!! I have not been more pleasantly surprised by a restaurant in years. We thought we would be early and arrived only 15 minutes after they opened and people were already walking from two parking lots away and there was a wait if that tells you how good this place is. For example a relative brought over a pie for the holidays that wound up sliding in breaking on the glass pie plate during the trip unfortunately. That being said ..everyone that has been to this restaurant before stated that it was worth the risk of swallowing and eating glass shards !!! !!!do not waste the peanut butter fluff pie!!!! So for perspective here folks...., multiple people we're not only okay with the risk of internal glass and slicing open your bowels from (small clear glass that you can't see inside fluffy white pie) but we're actually determined and adamant that that is a better alternative then letting this pie go to waste!! I've met a small group of friends here twice. It's a nice environment. They have an epically long list of desserts displayed on a chalk board menu. It's become my favorite part of the dining experience. The menu seems to rotate often but a few staples remain constant. It can be expensive. We were treated to dinner at Four Roses by family during a visit to the area. They spoke highly of the restaurant and we looked forward to the experience. We were not disappointed in any way. The service was expert and professional as well as friendly and personable. The food was outrageously wonderful in every category. I had the Michigan Cherry Old- fashioned cocktail, which was delicious and fun. I started my meal with Cream of Asparagus soup, which was divine. I was excited to try this restaurant as I have heard lots of good things. We were going for my birthday lunch. Upon arriving the hostess/server told us we could pick where we wanted to sit. I was expecting it to be a liittle nicer place. We noticed a messy entryway. Upon picking a table the 4 of us sat down and were handed 2 menus for 4 of us to share. That seemed odd that we couldn't each have a menu. I asked some questions about the menu and our server was nice but she wasn't really selling the food. We had to ask what came with entree she said vegetable & rice. I asked what kind of vegetable? She said Zucchini, summer squash & red pepper. She said rice was just white rice. I ordered the Trout with capers, it was delicious the veggies were ok nothing special but the rice was plain white steamed rice, it had no flavor and was very unimpressive. I did try the peanut butter pie and that didn't disappoint. The food was average. My husband ordered The Four Roses Burger, he said it was fine not bad not good. He also had the Almond Joy Ice cream pie and felt that was good. Prices were very reasonable. I would be happy to pay extra to get something besides the white steamed rice. The tables were very close together and we were hit by our neighboring table several times. I would try it again but It wasn't as good as I had anticipated. read more

Amazing food! Stopped in after long day at work with a couple friends and all of us were thoroughly impressed.I went with the chili and flank steak and one of my friends went with the braised beef. Both meals were phenomenal and cooked to perfection. The flank steak was a perfect medium rare and the sauce, over the top, was great. I also went with a house salad as a side. The onions were a little strong, but onions can be hit and miss that way. The rest of the salad was good. I don't get down here very often, but if you're in the area this is an amazing place to stop for food, and drink. read more
