Choices with your meal are excellent, food was delicious and service was impeccable. The place was very busy so you had to wait a little for your meal, but it was well worth it. This place is the best! 80%of everything they make is from scratch, including the burger! The homey touches of fresh burger and a little brand on top of the bun, just too cool! Flavor, freshness, hard to beat. BUT - the home-made chips were pretty great too, again made fresh daily! The pickle on the side tops it all off. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. The wait time for food is absolutely ridiculous, got there for breakfast and felt like I left for dinner time. Friendly staff. Food had been sitting awhile before being served and it was not hot. Breakfast needs to be hot. Cooled eggs and slightly warm sausage gravy is not good. One cup of coffee - waitress never came back with the pot and when she presented the check I finally had the opportunity to ask for a refill. What a delightful brunch experience! Everything about this place from it's cute exterior, welcoming staff and reasonably priced menu will make you want to come back for more. I ordered their 2 egg, toast and 1/2 meat ($8), while my husband ordered their breakfast burrito with side of choice of potato. ($10). All prices included tax! You are surrounded by so much Plainwell/Michigan/Farming memorabilia it's difficult to see everything at once. Their television had classic Bugs Bunny cartoons from the 40's playing in the background, which I absolutely loved! Our very nice server was prompt and the food was all very good. As soon as you walk in you're looking everywhere! It's like all their collectibles are all over the walls and it's wonderful! Especially for kids- we played a great game of I Spy! I wish the food was better than it was. The hash browns tasted stale, my tea for hot tea was only warm at best, the English muffin was slightly burnt, and the corned beef hash that my kids normally devour wasn't cooked to a crispy enough finish. The omelettes however were both very good! The servers are very friendly, they even made an"deal" with my 6 year old. Of all the breakfasts in all of Southwest Michigan, this one was the worst. The worst. The food was atrocious. Everything was burnt - the pancakes, the omelet, the hash browns. Now, I didn't say cooked, I said burnt, like a new cook who doesn't understand that cooking takes heat + time, not just high high heat. But, what the meal lacked in taste, it more than made up for in bad, disinterested service. The waitress came over several times and sort of yelled, "How is everything? Does it all taste great?" We said, in order, "Not really," "No," and "[blank stare]." Every time, she said, "Great" and walked away. Helpfully, the website's description of itself was sanctimonious and braggy, which should have been a red flag for an institutional refusal to reflect and improve. Ah well. I seriously want Barb from Barbed Wire Cafe to come decorate my house. You could spend 10 days in here and still notice new details every time you look around. Barb spotted me taking photos of the kitchy cool chandeliers made of old license plates and crystals and said: 'If you like that, you'll love the bathroom.' She was right! Turns out most of the custom-made decor here is hand crafted by Barb -- she's awesome! We we ordered a super basic breakfast, the 1-1-1, so I can't really give a proper assessment of the food but what we had was A-OK. Our meals were supposed to come with two slices of bacon and only came with one, but no biggie. Other than the bacon shortage, the service was fantabulous, and our coffees never got a quarter-empty because the wait staff was always there with a refill and a smile. We'll be back! read more

We spotted the earlier two reviews for this diner and were eager to try another location that serves breakfast. The location is in downtown Plainwell and parking was easy to find. The dining room has four booths and maybe eight tables of varying sizes. The interior is busily decorated with all sorts of Americana, mostly from the last century (flags, old photos, license plates, framed correspondence of various kinds). The front entrance faces the east, and it was a cold, gusty afternoon, so chilly air rushed into the dining room every time the door was opened. Those seated close to the front entrance no doubt felt the cold. We sat in the middle booth on the left. The server was welcoming, took our drink orders, and told us about that day's specials. The breakfast offerings didn't interest me, I didn't see a Reuben on the sandwich menu, so I decided to go for comfort by trying the "meatloaf/smashed redskin potatoes with gravy" special. My girl picked "2 eggs, meat, potato, toast" from the breakfast menu. Our food arrived hot. My meatloaf looked to be a good sized slab of ground beef that had been baked with some sort of catsup based sauce on top. I didn't see (or taste) anything suggestive of onion or green pepper and the slab crumbled as if there was little in the way of a binder. The smashed redskins were unseasoned and had several large junks of barely cooked potato. Seasoning everything with pepper helped. Halfway through eating the meatloaf, I gave up and decided to slather the remainder with catsup (because, as everyone knows, catsup exists only to conceal our culinary mistakes). The gravy was a brown broth and was an otherwise invisible part of the meal. The special came with a cookie - I chose oatmeal raisin - though it looked store bought, it was crisp and delicious. I had coffee and my cup was often refilled. My girl thought the bacon and the toast were fine, the scrambled eggs were okay, but the potatoes tasted old. Service was attentive. The menu that is available for review on the diner's website has another side that describes burgers and other lunch fare. The diner plans to serve dinner several days a week as well, maybe later in the fall. This diner will be a hit with the locals. I suspect that if we were traveling on the highway and were hungry, we didn't want to wait to eat in Kalamazoo, and Plainwell was the next exit, we might try this diner again. But this would not be a destination spot for us. read more

Then we waited over an hour for a couple slices of toast, eggs, and I had a burger. The burger was terrible, something really didn't taste right, I'm really hoping it was just unclean grill grease I was tasting and not bad meat. We called ahead to ask if dine in was available and the lady on the phone noticed the area code wasn't from the area, and was so kind; told us the specials they had over the phone and said that they'd love to see us there. The service was phenomenal, and the food quality was delightful; the logo branded into the top bun was a simple but very aesthetically pleasing and tasty addition. I had high hopes for this place, inviting, eclectic "down home" feel decor and solid service outshine the food. I ordered a country fried steak, unexpectedly it was a breaded piece of sirloin, not the usual cube steak typically found, was a little chewy, served with a "gravy mix" they added a little sausage to it, blah. The potatoes were almost inedible, I had American fries, they were deep fried, not cooked on the griddle like they should be, no love put into those at all. My companion got hash browns, just a mushy mess. I did like the barbed wire seasoning, but it couldn't rescue potatoes cooked wrong. I had the sourdough toast, my companion had jalapeño toast, she liked hers, me- meh, it was fine. Try it for a cool place to eat, just set your expectations low. read more
