One of my favorite bars! I try to make it to Kalamazoo a few times a year, but restaurant week is definitely my favorite. I went this past week and their blues fest was also happening. Live performances, good food, AMAZING drinks, and wonderful staff makes the drive worth it every single time! The cocktail bar has a cool story and I love that every menu item has a feeling to it. My favorite drink for the night was from their limited edition summer menu, the electric slide was perfect and refreshing (sign my petition to get my drink on the regular menu lol), my boyfriend had an old fashioned by one of the bartenders that another couple near us said makes the best, and he indeed said it was made perfectly! (Idk what that means cause I think they're gross, but ‍), the mint julep is also a must try as their signature drink, ooo and the my prerogative is pretty tasty too. Big drinker clearly, we also tried the competition cocktail made with corn!! Sounds insane, but it was actually really good!! Okay onto the food, I have no pictures of the food because I literally inhaled it all. So here's my list of must try's as the cost is pretty reasonable, so you can really try them all. This place is wonderfulin so many ways and we just happened upon it on a Friday night. The atmosphere is amazing. So relaxing and lit perfectly and full of cozy areas to sit and sip. Their commitment to having live music is awesome and we happened to be there when a jazz quartet was there. That just added to the chill and relaxing atmosphere more. I would highly recommend reservations, especially on those nights you know they have music. The main reason is because of service. The service people were so lovely but it does take a long time to get served. We had access to a table for an hour and a half (because the table was committed to a reservation after that and the host let us know that---no big deal). We were barely able to get a drink and pay for it and actually finish and enjoy it in that time. This is the only reason I went down to 4 stars. The drinks were good and the bartenders looked like they knew how to handle all the orders they were getting. We did not try any food as we knew we were limited on time. I look forward to trying some things next time. I will be going back and I will just plan a bit differently and make sure I get reservations. read more

We came here for the first time this week and I was super excited to try it out. We used to go to the coffee shop at this location and the change over to the bar is phenomenal. It's cozy and intimate and the chairs, while large and a tad annoying to be seated at when you have a coat on (unless you sit on it, you can't really hang it anywhere) were comfortable. It took a bit of a wait to get waters and took almost a half hour to get our first round, by the time we got them it was almost last call so we didn't get to try the others that we wanted. It was not busy, there were several bar seats and 4 separate open tables (Wednesday night) so the wait was not due to being packed. I got the Michael Jackson inspired drink, Heaven Can Wait: "peach mango vodka with delicate hints of basil and subtle plum bitters" It was very overpowering with its sweetness and unrecognizable fruit flavor... Oddly enough, I did not get peach or mango flavors. I felt it tasted most closely to a sour gummy worm and children's Tylenol. It was surprisingly thick and wasn't cold enough for my liking, it was weirdly warm for a cocktail so I added ice from my water to get it a more appropriate temp. I would not get this drink again. I had a cocktail I wanted to try next but it was just so slow we weren't able to do it. I didn't like the 20% automatic gratuity, because I think automatic is always annoying. I understand for large parties, but for any check I don't agree. ‍ I would be happy to give the place another chance next time we're in town, but for now, I think there's some room for improvement when there are so many fantastic local cocktail options. read more

A nice cocktail was exactly what was needed to end a long day. It was definitely a nice surprise to find this place directly across from the hotel! The outside doesn't look like much, but when you enter, you are swept into a serene environment. Black out curtains drape the windows. Soft lighting and rich colors adorn the bar. Great spot here. Music was great and not too loud/ quiet. Jazz sounded great when we went. It was a pretty expensive place for a college kid like myself but I got one drink, The Make A Wish. It was great, even being 15$. Worth it. My problem was with the service. They automatically add 20% gratuity, and it shows. Servers were borderline rude and not attentive whatsoever. I always tip 20%, but when you give me bad service because you know it's automatic, that's frustrating. read more

Incredible atmosphere at Dabney & Co. Not only were our drinks incredible but Teodor was so friendly and knowledgeable! You can tell he loves his job and getting to learn about people and their lives. He gave great recommendations, did great explaining different cocktails on the menu, and went above and beyond when we ordered off menu later in the night. I have been to Dabney more than a few times (many times actually) and there is a reason that I keep returning. The staff are always super friendly and kind, the food is always delicious (my fave is the hummus and the blt). I do not drink alcohol, and their mocktails are delicious (my favorite being the Motownphilly). The music is probably my absolute favorite about this place. The playlist is always reminiscent of the best soul and R&B of the 60s-90s and I love it!!! I love when they have R&B or Hip Hop events in partnership with a DJ and Satellite Records where I can add to my vinyl collection. The owners (Daniel and Kristy) are hard workers and always attentive (acknowledging me and my friends when we are there). The decor makes me proud to be Black! Paying homage to the greats in music. If I had to offer any cons is that I do with sometimes that they had more help as service can sometimes be slow. I don't mind it because the music keeps me vibin until my food and drink comes but my friends have mentioned it before. I also wish that there was a little bit more light as sometime it is so dark that my selfies and videos are no good lol. I work on Rose Street so I was really excited to see construction and renovation happening early last year at the corner of Rose and Kalamazoo (where Civil Coffee used to be). I followed its progress on social media and learned that they would be "honoring the black mixologists that influenced the cocktail industry but often went unrecognized". The name Dabney & Co is inspired by John Dabney (1824-1900). When it finally opened in late 2022, I was so excited. They held a couple soft opens and hosted a disco themed New Year Eve party. Last weekend I was staying at the Hotel 2 and walked across the street on a Saturday night around 8pm. There was a private party going on so the space was almost at capacity. My partner and I were able to get seated right at the bar. We were very thankful we got in when we did because the wait time went from 10 minutes to 2 hours pretty quickly. Everyone wanted to be there! There are rich, warm velvety curtains on the tall windows. There is a gold, ornate ceiling. Exposed brick. Edison light bulbs. Retro light fixtures. The music cannot get enough props, too. Every song that came on was one that I remember from my younger years so I was thoroughly enjoying it. They serve food and it looked delicious, but we just had cocktails. I ordered a French 75 and my partner ordered a Make a Wish. Both cocktails were 10/10. Beautifully crafted and garnished, delicious, strong - just phenomenal. I will say that on this particular night, it took a very long time to receive our drinks. We ordered our drinks and my partner received his about 15 minutes later, but I did not receive mine. I wait another 10-15 minutes and the bartender noticed I was still waiting so she made my cocktail and included a second one on the house. After my partner had finished his Make a Wish, he ordered an Olde Fashioned and never received it during the other hour we were there. They took it off the bill and apologized profusely. Despite the slow service, I still give this place five stars. I believe with it being a new establishment and potentially new bartenders, and with a private party going on - it affected the service. I'm certain that will smooth out with each passing day. I also noticed that the bartenders were making drinks in batches instead of as they were ordered, so that probably affected the timing as well. Again, small details that will be ironed out, I'm sure. The quality of the ambiance, the drinks, and the server personalities is too good to not come back! read more

We walked in the door, and it was an experience from the first step! The energy of this space is so warm and inviting, and hip and cool at the same time. We were greeted by staff immediately. It felt like being welcomed "home". The staff showed they were happy to see us and went above and beyond in their warm greetings. We ordered two drinks. He had the Mint Julep .
