We came for the view, which is amazing, and the food, delish! My husband had the pork chop and I had Tripoline. We ordered half salads which were also good and priced right. For dessert I had Tiramisu and he had the chocolate torte. Our server was very attentive and professional. Our only complaint was the table behind us with about 7 people was LOUD. Good friends brought me to Martell's while I was visiting from another state. Martell's is certainly a very special place, from it's exquisite menu to the stunning setting and scenery that you can enjoy through the picture window that blends the beauty of nature with the climate controlled and elegant dining room. Or if you prefer, you can opt for outside patio dining closer to the gorgeous pond. I also enjoyed the stonework features on the building both inside and out. The food was first class, mouth-wateringly delicious, cooked to perfection, beautifully presented, and served with a smile. For an appetizer we had the Sherry Onion Dip which has caramelized onion, roasted garlic, cream cheese, and a pita-like bread for dipping... it was awesome. Then I had a dinner house salad which features mixed greens, dried apricots, candied walnuts, sliced brie, citrus vinaigrette... I loved it. For the main entree I had the 10 oz prime rib with mashed potatoes and veggies... Everything was perfect. I wish we had a Martell's in my hometown. The service was first class, professional, friendly, and attentive. Martell's is a perfect for date night as it is elegant and has tables that provide an intimate setting. But it is also wonderful for friends meeting up, family gatherings and celebrations, and groups. I'd love to return and dine on the patio. My wife and I went for lunch today, it was our first visit here. Josh our host seated us at a table with a nice view of the water. Our server was Carlos, he did a great job of taking care of our order and serving us. I had a cup of their famous house made mushroom soup. It was very good and deserving of its popularity. I ordered the Orechiette which was very good also. My wife had the Prime Rib Dip which she shared with me. The beef was lean and very tender and the au jus was full of flavor. We loved the fact that they where open at 11:30 for lunch service with the full menu. We will be back to try some more of their dishes. read more

While planning for prom, I reached out to this restaurant over a month in advance to make a reservation for a large party. Each time I called, I was told my request would be passed along to the reservation manager and that I'd receive a call back--but I never did. After multiple follow-ups, I was finally told that my information had never been taken and that they were already fully booked. The lack of communication and follow-through was frustrating and a waste of time. If you're looking for a reliable place to make a reservation, I wouldn't recommend booking here. read more

What a great atmosphere!! A group of 7 of us had a reservation and the place was full. We were seated immediately even before our group arrived. We had appetizers and i had the salmon. I liked everything on my plate but it had too much salt. Our waiter was slow and did not take command of our orders. Usually in nicer restaurants like this the waiters are more A type personality. Ate here tonight to celebrate our son's graduation. The views are nice, atmosphere acceptable, and our server was really good. The food and drinks were both really good. The only complaint I have is the expense of a neat pour of whiskey. I understand establishments sometimes charge more for neat drink pours, but it makes no sense. A $3 up charge for a base level bourbon, simply because I wanted it neat vs over ice is unacceptable. Although this didn't ruin the evening, it does leave a bad taste. Last night a group of eight of us dined at Martell's to celebrate a friend's birthday. While we had a reservation for the main dining room, we opted instead for a large table on the bar side. Our waitress, Marissa, was very accommodating when we decided to move and we were very fortunate to have her! I hate onions, so when I eyed the mushroom soup on the menu I ask Marissa if she knew what exactly went into the soup. She went back to the chef to find out, then came back with a small sample of the soup. OMG, it was absolutely the best mushroom soup I've ever had (and no onions!). One taste revealed the flavors of fresh cream and butter, as well as beautifully cooked mushrooms. I ordered a whole bowlful of it and was not disappointed; I even commented that the soup was so good I wanted to take a bath in it! I was going to order the roasted beet salad, but Marissa said they had just finished the season for that and were on a new item: a poached pear salad with spring mix, dried cherries, candied pecans, and champagne vinaigrette. It was truly a delightful combination and, again, I'll say it was the best salad I've had in a very long time. Oooo, that vinaigrette! It was slightly sweet yet had the punch of the vinegar, a masterful fusion of flavor. Let me just say that Marissa, our busy waitress, is the kind of person you want in a restaurant. She was able to meet the needs of all eight of us in a a delightful manner. In fact, she was such a great waitress that my group applauded her near the end of our time there. All in all, my first time at Martell's means it won't be a my last. read more

Had THE BEST dinner we have had in Kalamazoo maybe even in Michigan! The service was amazing..never had to ask for a refill or anything actually! Our waitress was so sweet and was training another lovely server. We sat right in front of the fireplace and looked out on the water which was so beautiful! It was cozy and quaint! We started with the crispy Brussels sprouts as an appetizer and they were perfect! I think my husband wanted to lick the plate. I had the filet which was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth! My husband had the shrimp pasta which was just mouth watering. This is our new favorite spot..Izzie the Chef came out and she was just so kind and beautiful! Martell's has a charming ambience and is absolutely a fixture in Kalamazoo. In the summer, it's airy and you can enjoy the views out the big windows and in Winter, the big fireplace always hits it. You look around at the crowd, and you know these folks have been coming here for years. Watch out for prom season and homecoming. Service is always friendly, spot on, never pushy to move you along. The food for my family just never really hits the spot. We've been there three times over the past couple years and it's always just not quite good enough for the price. Our most recent trip was for my Birthday this past weekend, during no-man's time between Christmas and New Year's. It's pretty representative of our previous trips as well. Wine list is good, but they surprisingly didn't have any Zinfandels. The Rioja blend I settled on was fine. My wife found good Pinot Grigio. We had a shrimp and scallop appetizer, which was two quarter sized scallops and three larger shrimp. You can always complain about scallops being too small, so I wasn't too verklempt over this and the red sauce was tasty. We ended up enjoying that red sauce on our table bread for longer than on the seafood. I had their prime rib (middle size, medium rare doneness.). It was a very fatty cut. A playing card deck size chunk of fat on one end and a 1" thick edge down the length of what was left. It looked like 30-40% of my steak was garbage. The seared edges of the cut were about 1/2" of very overcooked and overly salty meat. What remained looked the right color, but was tough to cut. I thought the skin on mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables were quite delicious. My wife had an Orecchiette Pasta that was cooked nicely al dente, which is important because they serve West Michigan Pasta and Provisions products. And yet, maybe there was more garlic than emphasized in the sauce ingredients or something like that because she left feeling sick to her stomach for about 12 hours. The food just doesn't live up to the expectations here, or at any of the Millennium Group restaurants in the area. Service and ambiance, as usual, were well done. read more

Driving into the establishment is a delight! As it is surrounded by a lot of scenic areas to walk around, sit outside, and watch the water! I like the seating how it overlooks the water and the bar area is cozy. We got the MUSHROOM TOAST- it was quite flavorless but the bread that came with it was yummy! The SMOKED BRISKET RAVIOLI had a wonderful sauce and it came with 6 so it was perfect for our table. The WHIPPED GOAT CHEESE was the winner of the appetizers! The entire table loved it. I got the ARUGULA salad with salmon on top and the grilled salmon filet was perfect! Flavorful and didn't even need the side of lemon. We ordered the WEDGE salad and it was okay. The SUMMER BERRY SALAD had a great dressing and you cannot go wrong with it! The MUSHROOM SOUP was pretty similar to the mushroom toast just more soupy, but delicious! The biggest portions were CAPELLINI with about 4 shrimp on top, and the HALF ROASTED CHICKEN. Now the half chicken had fantastic flavor with a lot of vegetables under it. I will order it again sometime! For dessert, we got CANNOLI which was pretty big, and the CHOCOLATE TORTE which was gobbled up so quickly I wasn't even able to sneak a bite! The snickerdoodle martini was an exact replica of a snickerdoodle. All in all, we had a great time. It was Mother's Day at 5 pm so naturally the staff were pretty whooped by the time we got in. Looking for a new place in KZoo and was craving Italian, ended up here. Service was fantastic, sat at the bar. Sounded like a lot of regulars around me. The mushroom soup was great, I'd like it a tad thicker but flavor was spot on. Went with the rigatoni, and wanted some ital sausage as well. Pasta and sausage were both 5/5. Bolognese sauce was 3 ish. I did like the bread rolls that come with the dinner. Had 2 glasses of the house wine - very nice, but pricey. There is no question I'll be back. But, when the 2 glasses of wine is more expensive than my entree with add on and soup, that's an issue. Food and service is solid. Next time I'll stick with a sandwich and a draft, but it will still be good. read more

The room was wonderful and warm, the food was amazing and the team she had taking care of us were fantastic. I've never gotten so many compliments for a party. We have always made Martell's the restaurant for us to get Prime Rib and Mushroom soup. It has been about a year since we were last able to visit. I noticed the recent reviews were not good as in the past. But having been here many times I disregarded them. Unfortunately we were very disappointed on this visit as well. The Prime Rib was cold and not as flavorable as it used to be. No aujus was served with it. We were told it is drizzled lightly on the plate and then the prime rib is placed on the plate. The vegetables (barely 1/3 cup) that were served with the prime rib were hidden under it. Did not even see them until nearly through eating we thought they forgot the vegetables. Also there was not any aujus on the vegetables so how could it have even been put on the plate? Rolls were not served with the prime rib this time, we had to ask for them. My husband's french fries were cold when served. The mushroom soup was excellent as always. The server never asked if we wanted refills of water or drinks. We felt as though she was agitated having to wait on us. Maybe because we asked why rolls and aujus were not served with the prime rib. We did not mention to her that the food was served cold, we just let it go not sure if it would have mattered to her or any other employee working there anyway. I know restaurants are having issues getting help now. But when you pay $68.00 for a prime rib dinner and it is served cold, no aujus, no rolls and not even a dinner salad well you would expect to receive a decent meal and service. So sad! No matter how much I love the mushroom soup.......we will probably not be back. read more

Value, Service, & and Quality make up all my reviews. So in this case I would do 3 stars across the board, meaning I would try it again. I have been here before with very good results. I'm not sure if it's inflation and thin resources but it left me a little disappointed based upon my past experiences here. I had the sausage rigatoni and added a meatball but it was light on flavor, outside of garlic, and rather dry all together. I needed to request more sauce, which was different than the rigatoni. A completely serene environment out on the outdoor terrace with impeccable views of the water & flourishing green trees. My server, Nick, was attentive, kind and down to earth. He made exceptional recommendations which I tried all of. From the decadent red blend wine from Spain, to the house mushroom soup, then pork milanese, finished with a rich chocolate torte. 11/10 experience, any time I am in town I will certainly return. We went as a couple of four, with two tabs. We ordered at the kiosk. We let them know we were at the same table,and they said no problem. We got three of our four drinks. After 15 minutes of waiting, I went and asked the woman who took the order about the fourth drink. Oops! Her bad. In the meantime,while I was asking about my drink, our companions got their salads. We waited another 15 minutes with no salads. I went back up. I was assured our salads would come. After waiting another 15 minutes, our salads did come and then five minutes later, our pizza. Our friends pizza did not come until after hours. If a restaurant is going to have you go up and order at a kiosk/ bar, the timing of food delivery is important when you're in a group of four- wasn't a big group. Also the salads were quite basic as far as the Caesars, unlike what we usually get inside. The pizza was good. The timing was terrible with everything. I think there were at least 4 to 5 servers standing waiting for food delivery when perhaps it would be better to use them as service staff. I was very disappointed in Martell's tonight. It's a lovely space outdoors. It needs to be run better. Other tables never got their salads.... read more

It took 4 calls to get a straight answer about if they were open a certain day with availability for resvered dining. My aunt initially called and got the complete opposite answer from when I followed up. A few more back and forths but I was finally told they were open and I could make a reservation. Once there, everything was wonderful! A upscale setting with lake views perfect for a celebratory dinner. Everyone left full and happy. The frise were dry and my salmon sandwich was delicious but needed better seasoning for a non spicy option. We came here to celebrate an occasion which was very important to us. The only problem was the staff treatment to customers. when we arrived here,the girl on the front door desk wasn't as welcoming for us as welcoming to white customers. She was grumpy and didn't like when we asked her to change our table from outdoors to indoors. Although it was obvious we were celebrating and the restaurant was super empty, She offered us one of the worst outdoor tables. we wanted better view so asked to go inside. We got better table by then. inside, The waiter who served our table started hitting on my husband and tried to make hints about his interest in my husband without any respect for me being there! Then he took his chances when i went to the rest room and started making weird movement in front of my husband. I am so shoked of the level of customer service! This made us feel very uncomfortable during our special occasion. It was very disrespectful and unprofessional behavior! We couldn't wait to get out here! I am very disappointed at the disrespectful service at the table and the unequal customer treatment in the front door. Had my daughter's wedding shower here. FABULOUS! Jessica, the asst general manager, was so accommodating. We were allowed to bring in decorations and our own cake. The chef even cut the cake after consulting me for our preferences. Top notch! With only 15 guests, ordered off the menu for lunch. Wait staff and host were very attentive and helpful. Food was delicious! We had our spot (overlooking the lake) for 5 hours! The guests were enchanted with the entire experience. Pros : - Place has a nice environment for special occasions and dates, with a great view. - Classic Burger is delicious, also their Mushroom soup is super tasty ! - Prices are ok. Cons : - French Fries was super dry and felt like overcooked. - There were many insects on the windows flying everywhere. It doesn't feel clean that much. - Lady at the front desk was super grumpy and bored didn't help us or welcome us appropriately, just because you have a nice place and good food doesn't give you the benefit of acting very unprofessional with customers. - The waiter (Gerard) was being too forward with me that made me feel very uncomfortable. I sensed some weird vibes. I don't know if the vibese were hitting on me or what, but that was definitely inappropriate. Specially that I was with my WIFE ! And anyone can tell that we were on a date for a special occasion obviously ! Gerard talked to me in a flirty way and laughed and jumped in a weird way as I received the receipt and I was just trying to be nice.
