I'm a little picky when it comes to chinese food and this was no disappointment. I got the flaming combo appetizer platter and chicken fried rice. The platter came with two each of beef teriyaki, chicken wings, crab rangoon, spring rolls, and some type of wonton. The rice was plentiful and delicious. I even told my co worker that the next time we get chinese for dinner I'll probably get it from here and bring it home instead of ordering from our usual place in kennesaw. Typical run-of-the-mill fast Chinese restaurant. My coworker and I came here for lunch on a Thursday and were greeted, ordered, and began eating our soups within 10 minutes. Another 3 minutes and our food arrived. SUPER QUICK and a very easy option if you're in a rush for lunch. The lunch menu is expansive, covering front and back with many options. I ordered the Beef with Fresh Mushooms - for $7.50 it comes with a store-bought spring roll, your choice of white or fried rice, soup, and a surprise crab ragoon. My coworker ordered the Mongolian Chicken and his plate looked much more delicious than mine. Although the vegetables in my dish were fresh, the beef had that odd soggy texture and the entire dish was very, very oily. The flavor was good so I picked out all of the vegetables and left the beef. Service is quick. For less than a $10 lunch in the area, you can't beat it. Me and my gf were craving Chinese takeout, and we came across this place. She was specifically craving egg drop soup. We were pretty hungry so we got quite a few things. We got a hot and sour soup, an egg drop soup, an order of spring rolls, an order of Crab Rangoon, an order of chicken lo mein, and an order of the chicken w/ Chinese vegetables. Honestly, everything was REALLY GOOD. The only complaint we had really, was that my gf thought the egg drop soup was way too salty so she was unable to finish it. But everything else tasted really good. The spring rolls had a nice crisp. It came in a pack of 2. They gave a side of duck sauce to go with it as well. The Crab Rangoon was crispy and creamy. It came in a quantity of 6 and came with sweet and sour sauce. My hot and sour soup was some of the best hot and sour soup I've ever had. We also asked for an extra bag of those chips they give with the soup! The lo mein was hot and really flavorful and came with a good amount of chicken. And the chicken w/ Chinese vegetables was fresh, hot, and packed with a good amount of chicken as well plus so many different vegetables. It also came with a side of white rice. I was very impressed with the takeout we got from this restaurant and I would definitely come back again. Really good service, it definitely has a mom and Pop vibe to it. Even though the music was low, and it was pretty quiet, they accommodated us in our two year old very well. The waiter even brought him a tiny fork to eat with. The food was great, I highly recommend the fried noodles. We've tried to frequent this place but no more. Every single time we've been here, the food is NEVER ready on time. We always end up waiting 30-40 min after the food should be ready. It's unacceptable; just let your customers know it'll take a hour rather than saying 15 min only for us to have to another 30-45 min in the parking lot. It's ludicrous. I expressed my frustration to the manager today and she didn't provide any semblance of an apology. I don't expect or want free food or any refunds, just apologize and attempt to rectify the situation by making my food ASAP. This is one of my favorite Chinese places in the Emory/Druid Hills area. The food is consistent, whether I eat in the restaurant, take out, or have it delivered. My favorite thing they have to offer is the steamed dumplings. I've had both the vegetable and pork, and while I prefer the pork, the veggie are also good! The wrappings are thinner that a lot of places, which is what makes them so good. At this visit, I ordered sesame chicken, which was great. It's a little on the sweet side, but that is what I look for in my main dish. I have also had the sweet and sour chicken and orange chicken and liked them all, though I think the sesame chicken is my favorite. They also serve a quarter of an orange at the end of the meal, which is a nice touch. Finally, something else to note, they have a good lunch buffet on Sunday. I highly recommend it! They have tons of different options and I am on the pickier side, and I still found lots of food I liked. Biggest downside: they don't have traditional eggrolls. After doing some light shopping in the area, I figured I would stop for some good ole Asian cuisine! This place has been here for years and won all kinds of great rewards for food. I haven't been here in about 5 years so I figured I would go back and give it a try. The location is in a newly build/renovated shopping plaza off of briarcliff. If you are familiar with the Navy federal bank there - it's across the street near family dollar. Parking is a small maze in itself ! It's so weird but luckily for me I got a spot right in front of the door. Atmosphere- it is extremely outdated. Felt really dingy like I was in a 70's lounge and bar. Service - The hostess wiped down the booth we asked for and seated us. The waiter we had did not feel very personable. I felt indeed like I was a number. In fact the last number. She bought us drinks but kept serving every single table around us. We didn't get to order until about 15 minutes later. I ordered the sesame chicken and although it was good, the sweet and sour chicken my daughter ordered was absolutely disgusting. She didn't even finish it. The plates were filthy, the cups were cloudy. The sprite was actually good though (surprisingly). It took about 15 minutes to get her attention to even get the to go boxes but the hostess was able to spot us with a check. When I asked for to go boxes I asked for a cup for my sprite. I'm guessing they don't do things like that because she never came back with one. So I proceeded to fill up my daughters apple juice cup to take it to go. She saw me and never bought a cup. Really over the entire visit. In fact, I don't think I'll be returning. Maybe in another 5 years to see if there are any improvements. Needless to say I didn't leave a drop of a tip. Not one penny. These people have to be the greediest covid-19 profiteers. They only take phone orders for pickup. Sounds innocent enough. However they take every order until their kitchen is overwhelmed. The person taking the order says "your order will be ready in 20 minutes" unfortunately they say that to everyone. The result is a crowd of people waiting an hour for their food in a cold rain. If the staff can't get the orders ready in the stated time then they need to provide shelter or some indoor accommodations while we wait for their kitchen to catch up. Avoid this restaurant at Thanksgiving and Christmas unless you like to stand outside in the cold. read more

I placed a TOGO order and had some questions she couldn't answer but overall, this is a once in while type of joint for me . If you are ordering TOGO make sure you ask for eating utensils & also ask what comes in the dishes . Hard to add to the recommendations that are already on Yelp - this venerable Chinese restaurant has been a local favorite for many years. I would place this in the Americanized Chinese food category - sort of old-school make-what-Americans-think-Chinese-food-should-be style through the use of a lot of sweet flavors and wok fried meats. Don't expect the regional Chinese labels to apply in authentic fashion - even those entrees marked as spicy are mild. If you're older, you'll appreciate Fortune Cookie's flavors as reminiscent of Chinese Cooking you had growing up (unless you had access to a real China Town in NYC or California or similar). Every time I've gone I've noticed an older crowd of diners (and often the place is full-up, sometimes with a wait) - this is indeed an old-school crowd that appreciates the food for what it is - some of the best Americanized-Chinese classics around. There are a couple of things that make Fortune Cookie special - the first that is very noticeable, even with the first appetizer, is the freshness of all the ingredients - no left-over, reformed hash here. The veggies are very crisp and the sauces aren't gummy through the over-use of corn starch. I recommend the spring rolls, steamed pot-stickers and the won-ton soup (this last is probably one of the best I've had in Atlanta, with fresh spinach leaves and diced smoky pork - it's a very nice soup). The hot-and-sour soup is passable, however I like it with meat and the use of white-pepper - Fortune Cookie uses black-pepper with a darker, starchy broth. While passable, there are many places with better - stick with the won-ton and you'll be happy. I've tried many entrees but usually end up either getting the spicy chicken (it's basically general tso's served fried, sauced with a side of steamed broccoli) or phoenix and dragon (chicken and shrimp in white sauce with veggies - the latter you'll want to spice up with some chili sauce) - at around $11 not a bad deal. The chicken is very tender (bit of corn-starch expansion there) and soft enough to gum if you're older (heh) - the shrimp are larger and cooked to firm (not rubbery). Part of the veggie mix is fresh bamboo shoot when they are in season - the delicate and fragrant shoot is much better than your typical canned version used in many "schwag" Chinese places and worth ordering on it's own if offered as a special - it has a flavor like no other. Order the hot tea and you're ready to go. While I absolutely love the real flavors found in authentic cooking, there's absolutely nothing wrong with solid, traditional Americanized Chinese cooking - just know what to expect and you'll do fine. This is a good meeting place restaurant for when you have people included that haven't experimented with authentic cooking. The other thing that Fortune Cookie does well is their take-out. You can view their menu and order online - something I wish other restaurants would offer as it's a real winner. If you're in the North Druid Hills area they also deliver. read more

Yummmm....a Chinese Buffet. It sounded like a wonderful brunch idea for a Sunday afternoon. We lazily headed over to Fortune Cookie, which has a Chinese Buffet every Sunday from 12 - 2:30 pm. The first thing we noticed was the chaotic restaurant staff. It took a few minutes to find us a table as the staff seemed to be frantically running around like chickens with their heads cut off! When we were finally seated, our waiter promptly greeted us. Unfortunately, this would turn out to be an anomaly because our waiter would be MIA for most of the meal. Each time we tried to flag another server down, they would hurriedly walk by us while mentioning that they would "be right back". They always seemed to be preoccupied with some "pressing matter" that took precedence over providing us with any kind of service. Consequently, our glasses were not refilled throughout the meal. The dining room is somewhat dilapidated. We noticed several chairs where the upholstery was literally coming apart! The carpet and chairs, along with the decor could use a serious refresh! It appeared as though this restaurant had not been updated in at least two decades. Onto the food - I opted for the buffet while my wife ordered steamed chicken and vegetables. The buffet offered a fairly wide array of standard Chinese dishes including sesame chicken, beef and vegetables, sweet-and-sour chicken, plum chicken, and various shrimp and tofu dishes. There was also vegetable lo mein, eggrolls, crab rangoon, various kinds of rice, along with several classic Chinese soups. And last, but certainly not least, there were fried chicken wings. As Chinese food goes, the buffet was a mixed bag. I found some of the food to be quite good, while other items were just average. The beef and vegetables, sesame chicken, and sweet and sour chicken were the definite standouts. But perhaps the biggest disappointment were those decadent looking wings, which turned out to be a mirage. They looked incredibly fresh and delicious but had a very strange flavor that didn't resonate with me. I also found several wings that appeared to be undercooked. Oh well...so much for those succulent looking wings. :( On a positive note, my wife enjoyed her steamed chicken and brown rice, and commented that it was definitely above average. I also want to mention that the person in charge of the buffet was quite diligent at replacing any items that were running low. He made sure that the buffet was constantly being replenished at a rate that kept up with the demand. If they could improve the consistency of the food and service, this Sunday buffet has serious potential. But in the meantime, the inconsistent food coupled with subpar service will not have me coming back anytime soon. read more

Ok, so straight up...one of these stars is for pure nostalgia alone! I've been coming to Fortune Cookie for at least 15 years, seriously. I love the fact that they know my name and always ask about my family. It's like a Chinese version of "Cheers" LOL. In all honesty, the restaurant is a bit of a hole in the wall. But, for me...that's alright if I truly enjoy the food. Which, I do!!! The exterior of the entire Plaza had a recent makeover and facelift, so it looks better from the outside. But, the food is old school, Americanized Chinese food and its super comforting to me. I've done both takeout and dine in over the years. For the takeout, they are usually earlier than the expected time of arrival, which is nice. When I am looking for a laid-back and tasty, no frills meal (and have the time)...I like to dine in. There are a few staples I enjoy every time--Mandarin Combination (under the Gourmet Specialties) includes Beef, Chicken and Shrimp in "special" brown sauce, with assorted veggies. I pair this with steamed white rice and that dish has been a winner for me on multiple occasions. I'm also a fan of the Phoenix and Dragon, which is Chicken breast and Shrimp in a white wine, ginger, garlic sauce, with assorted veggies. My final "go to" menu item is the Spicy and Tangy Lamb (also under Gourmet Specialties), which comes in a hot, brown sauce with assorted veggies. Again, I have not gone wrong with this dish ever. Overall, I appreciate Fortune Cookie for being exactly what it claims to be...consistently good, solid Chinese food in a dive setting. In all the years I've been coming here, to memory, I had 1 off experience with my meal some years back (sauce wasn't cooked well) and they did their best to rectify the situation. We went on Christmas, which I would not suggest unless you really are "that" person who must have Chinese food. It was packed with a line out of the door at 6:30. but that was ok. They got us seated quickly and gave us a booth since I had 2 kids with me. They loved the fish tank and bubble thingy. So one thing they do here, which I am not used to is that they roll the Mooshu for you. If you do not know what that is, it is thin rice pancakes like tortillas, plum sauce and a mix of veggies and meat. I am used to rolling my own since I am not a huge fan of plum sauce. First and foremost, the restaurant isn't the easiest to see. The signage blends in with the brick and the restaurant is hidden behind large bushes. Onto the review. Food: I only ate here once (yesterday) and I will probably not eat here again. The food is tasty, but for the price I prefer Little Bangkok. I also had some hot and sour soup which was no better than any other average hot and sour soup I've had before. My entree was the General Tsu's chicken which was tasty and plentiful, but I still think they charge too much for such a unkempt restaurant. I had the choice of either white steamed rice or fried rice with my entree. I chose the fried rice and it was just average fried rice with a small amount of peas and carrots. My lunch buddy got their jumbo shrimp with asparagus and white sauce and it was very tasty. Oh yea! Their tea was very good too :) Atmosphere: This place is dark, dingy and nasty. THIS is the reason I will probably never set foot inside this restaurant again. There was dust buildup all over the tiles and the vents, the lighting fixture above my table was cracked and chipped, the lights in some of the display cases were hanging out of their light sockets. This place is just horribly maintained. My concern is that if what the customers see is this bad, how bad is the kitchen?! Service: Service was actually good, they made no mistakes and they were johnny on the spot with removing dishes and getting refills, no complaints here. Summary: I would rate the food and service a 4/5, but the atmosphere 1/5 which is why I settled on a 2/5.
