Portuguese tarts
Sara A.

We ordered a chocolate custard birthday cake and everyone at our birthday party loved it. There are so many bakeries in town but this cake is solid. The cake was so beautiful, moist and seriously is one of the best I have had for years. The guest also raved about the Portuguese buns and the Portuguese tarts. We are definitely coming back to order more cake for our next celebration. Thanks for your wonderful service over the phone and as well in person this morning. We really appreciate how carefully the cake was wrapped. It arrived perfectly.

Portuguese tarts
Mary C.

A friend told me this bakery had fantastic Portuguese tarts so I had to try. Just before Christmas I called asking if they had any Portuguese tarts left for the day and they did and also very helpful in putting some aside for me. Finding good Portuguese tarts is hard. Nothing in town has been comparable to the tarts eaten in Lisbon and the Portuguese tarts here come the closest. Upon arrival, I checked out the baked goodies and noticed the cannolis and so had to also take some home. They were also delicious. In addition to baked goods, the bakery also sold some Italian canned goods, pasta and meat. Also bought the Hungarian Farmer mild sausages to pair with cheese and crackers. All in all, a lovely bakery to visit and worth the drive to the other side of town. Fantastic customer service and delicious goodies. Will be back the Portuguese tarts.

I love their sandwiches. You get to pick your cheese, deli meats and they add mayo and mustard. The young lady helping me was really nice and patient. The rest of the staff were also very friendly and attentive. I only took one star off cause the pork sausage roll was a bit bland and it was a bit overpriced. They accept debit if your purchase is over $5.00.

Blueberry Scone
Dana S.

This is a nice bakery stocking lots of sweet treats and bread loaves. I tried a blueberry scone and almond birdnest cookie. The scone was light in texture but rich in flavour and the cookie had a delicious melty texture. Neither was overly sweet and both tasted fresh even though I didn't eat them the day of. The person working was really nice and seemed eager to help.

a birthday cake in a box

We got a dozen Mario cupcakes for my daughters 5th birthday, on really short notice, at Fortuna - they looked amazing, they tasted great, and my daughter freaked out over the tiny stars sprinkles they added eyes to. Like 50 of them. 5 out 5, will be back.

Wedding cake

We ordered our wedding cake with Fortuna and were extremely pleased with the outcome. Working with Luisa was easy and she made sure to help us stay within our budget. The cake tasting was super helpful as well to figure out the flavour and icing we wanted. Also they were super generous in adding flowers to the cake that matched my wedding flowers. Luisa also personally delivered the cake for a small price all the way to Pitt Meadows so that she could make sure it arrived safely. The guests loved the cake as well! Highly recommend Fortuna for your wedding cake!!!

Traffic on the number 1 means bakery break!!
Liz O.

There were 3 accidents on the number 1 this morning, and traffic was almost at a complete standstill on Hastings. Luckily, for me, that meant stopping in at this lovely bakery and grabbing a coffee and muffin while I waited for traffic to subside. The blueberry muffin was moist and tasty and the self serve Tuscany coffee absolutely hit the spot. I love that there was a group of older gentlemen who seemed like regulars that took over one side of the bakery. They were laughing away at 9 in the morning and this gave it a very homey feeling.

It seems that Fortuna has a new baker in the back and she is a whiz with cakes and pastries. Now they have the same great breads but they have really upped their cake game. They are my new favourite place to order a birthday cake from. I know they will use quality ingredients and the cake will be made fresh for me the day I need it. Having worked in bakeries I know that this is often not the case. Their prices are more than fair for the quality of the product.

Huge Asian grocery store chain. Definitely a must-go to do most Asian grocery shopping. The store…read moreis huge and has pretty much everything someone needs. There are also beauty products here. Depending on the time of day and if there are any holidays, the store can be quite loud and crowded. Sometimes it's also hard to get parking spots. When on sale, the veggies are quite cheap and sometimes there are discounts on the meat too. Chicken drumsticks sometimes only cost about 98 cents per lb which is great. Compared to smaller stores, the snacks here are very cheap and the selection is huge. Recently the cooked food section turned from 2 or 3 items and rice and soup to charging by weight, which made it quite a lot more expensive. I used to choose the 2-item one alot before as it was only around $12 for a full meal, but now half the plate is around the same price. I personally like the bubble tea section fhe most as it's really cheap at around $5-6 for a drink. It's not the greatest tasting thing ever but great value for the price. Previously the cashiers all seemed to speak Chinese only (Mandarin or Cantonese), but I noticed that recently there's more people that speak English. People who shop here are mostly Asian though. They have a membership program where people can earn points, and then redeem them for rewards later. The rewards are pretty good, from snacks to tote bags to kitchen appliances.

From aisle staff to hot foods counter to checkout everyone works hard but stops to help customers when they ask for assistance. I've witness this by pretending I don't speak Chinese and asked about discount on a dish where the tag was missed as needed to be sold end of day, the lady quickly grabs the nearest coworker that spoke English to help understand my question. She could have just said sorry no English. Which is very typical of Asians when they don't feel comfortable interacting in their second language. Koodo for the effort

I've…read morealways been curious about Blackball so it's great that we can try some of their stuff from Market Ribbon without having to go all the way to the actual Blackball shop. Last time I bought some kind of Mango drink with Agar jelly for my daughter. She liked it while I was just OK with it. This time I bought a Passionfruit Lemon Green Tea with Coconut Jelly for my daughter, and a Wintermelon Tea with Grass jelly and Aiyu jelly drink for my husband. My daughter and I both loved the Passionfruit drink. I wouldn't mind buying that one again sometime. Hubby seemed to like the Wintermelon drink a lot. I liked it better than I had like the Mango drink with Agar jelly but still wasn't crazy about it. I really really liked the Passionfruit drink though, so I might buy that one for myself sometime since I only took a couple of sips from that drink and left the rest for my daughter. These drinks would cost a good deal more at the actual Blackball store so getting them premade at Market Ribbon for just $4.99 each is a pretty good deal. If you're not too picky, this is a great place to satisfy a bubble tea craving without breaking the bank!

The inside is definitely bare bones and on the smaller side. However, it was full of customers. They're doing something right. They have Korean snacks and produce. Special mention to their dedicated kimchi and ready to eat food section, which have items like tteokbokki (starch roles in sauce) and kimbap. Oh so tasty. Another thing worth mentioning - they have sashimi grade fish, and as of the time of writing, it is much cheaper than T&T. My only real complaint is that the checkout area is set up rather poorly. I just saw a pile of people by the counters and assumed I was in the lineup. Turns out the lineup actually goes down the aisle that is closest to the wall. Pro tip. This place is definitely on my radar now. Will be back more often to empty my wallet. Recommended.

Was around the neighbourhood and my significant other needed some supplies, that to make some…read morehome-made broth for her pho. We already passed up a few other locations and I remembered this place, I haven't been here in years, so I didn't know what to expect. Most people who live in the Lower Mainland might not come to this place, as it literally is in the (as my friend use to say) "armpit" of Canada. From the amount of beggers, crack whores, drug dealers, drug takers, let's just say this is not the rainbow and unicorns neighbourhood of town. I found parking a block up, and once we exited the car, a person asked us if we had any change.... yes... this is a stones throw away from Hastings and Main! We entered, and the guy working here was unloading, and putting things away, as well as setting up the front display of food items, and my dear went off in her world to look for items. This place is spacious, no overloading of shelves, no narrow aisles, no short store, this place is pretty wide, and pretty long. We started on the left side, walking down their open refrigerated section, you see very clean, and packaged vegetables. Anything from Thai chili's, Thai basil, mini limes, coriander, green onions, bean sprouts, just to name a few, everything had their own packaging where you could see what your buying, and everything was, as I said, clean! Through the aisles we noticed stuff like shrimp paste, sections of Sriracha sauce, fish sauce, cane sugar, brown sugar, cans of bamboo, powdered soup broth for your favorite pho dishes, laksa sauces, a variety of different rice noodles, even labelled by the width of the noodle. This place is a specialty store, and one I wouldn't hesitate on sending anyone too, sure you have to actually get out of your car, or go down there with public transit, and open your eyes to a different part of society. Sometimes part of the journey of making your dish at home, is the journey less spoken, that of where the hell you got your ingredients. The words, "you can't believe where I went to get this stuff" may come out of your mouth the next time you actually decide to prepare a Thai, Viet, Cambodian, Malaysian, Indonesian, etc..., dish... but if your working through some cookbook that is telling you things you need for a particular dish that you have no clue where to get cause your normal supermarket wouldn't have a clue what it is.... you maybe surprised here by finding it. The one thing we were looking for.. which they didn't have was freshly package pho noodles..... as all of the noodles we saw were dry, can't win them all!

Being Thai- speaks for itself now. I should know where to shop right? Right?…read more This is the only bona fide place to get That ingredients if you want that authentic green curry with real Thai eggplant (so round and cute, definitely not long and skinny which will give you soggy eggplant) or the hard to find actual Kaffir limes (not just the leaves) for your tom yum soup. Pick up some "real" oyster sauce for your Pad Bai Graprow, and the grapow leaves too (Thai basil). There's so much more, from frozen desserts, great Jasmine rice, rice noodles, and on and on and on.. spices. BUT, caveat, its in a sketch neighbourhood on East Hastings, druggies, street merchants (which are not necessarily sketch), homeless folks (also not necessarily sketch). So you might feel a bit out of place if you plan on sliding up in your Range Rover or Mercedes. But that's just a feeling, nothing bad will happen. It's not the prettiest of places, it's a big warehouse kind of space, no cute labels and fun signs, just the facts and prices. Ladies who work there, super nice, super helpful. A lot of things are kept in the back so use your big girl voice and ask for things if you can't find it. Delivery day seems to be Friday, so the weekend is a good time to go in. Prices are so good, I don't know why anyone and I mean ANYONE would buy Thai ingredients in the Asian food aisle in the supermarket. Case and point, fish sauce should never, ever cost more than $2 for the largest size bottle. EVER. You're welcome. Happy Thai shopping, cooking and eating :)
