Hmmm. So the Pasteis de Nata, the wonderful portoguese tarts from which my Dan Tats come from, are pretty good - even cold. I would rate them 4/5 stars. However everything else was very average or underwhelming. My almond croissant was very substandard, like they just stuffed almonnd paste into a Safeway croissant. A friend told me this bakery had fantastic Portuguese tarts so I had to try. Just before Christmas I called asking if they had any Portuguese tarts left for the day and they did and also very helpful in putting some aside for me. Finding good Portuguese tarts is hard. Nothing in town has been comparable to the tarts eaten in Lisbon and the Portuguese tarts here come the closest. Upon arrival, I checked out the baked goodies and noticed the cannolis and so had to also take some home. They were also delicious. In addition to baked goods, the bakery also sold some Italian canned goods, pasta and meat. Also bought the Hungarian Farmer mild sausages to pair with cheese and crackers. All in all, a lovely bakery to visit and worth the drive to the other side of town. Fantastic customer service and delicious goodies. Will be back the Portuguese tarts. read more

I love their sandwiches. You get to pick your cheese, deli meats and they add mayo and mustard. The young lady helping me was really nice and patient. This is a nice bakery stocking lots of sweet treats and bread loaves. I tried a blueberry scone and almond birdnest cookie. The scone was light in texture but rich in flavour and the cookie had a delicious melty texture. Neither was overly sweet and both tasted fresh even though I didn't eat them the day of. Extremely disappointed! I came specially to buy Portuguese buns. Arrived at 11:30 AM on a Sunday. This bakery is only known for its buns, as everything else is incredibly overpriced and stale. You can get sliced meat and cheese for 1/2 the price at Keas meats in Burnaby. Went yesterday and bought Black Forest ham at $7.99 per lb. Kea's meat sells their deli meat and cheeses per lb not per 100 gram. It's a rip off here at $3.25 per 100 gram. So it's 4.54 grams to make a lb. 4.54 x $3.25 (per 100 grams) = $14.76. I paid $7.99 a lb at Kea's. At $3.25 per 100 gram, I would have paid $14.76 here. Anyways, at 11:30 am the buns were sold out! WTF!!! You are sold out at 11:30 am????? Common sense is that you make more. Nope, not these guys!! Major disappointed! I also purchased some Portuguese egg tarts. They were old and stale and extremely sweet! Inedible! It should be illegal for bakeries to sell old products at full price. $3.25 for an inedible tart. The texture is way off and tasted of sugar. You are better off going to T & T buy 6 for $7. Made fresh same day with a creamy center and crispy outside. This was garbage. I also have bought baked goods before and all was all stale. Complained to the owner numerous times. Its incredible that they sell day plus old goods without telling us or giving day old discounts!!! This gives me no reason to come here anymore! All they had was Portuguese buns that were edible, and worth buying. You sell out before noon, unacceptable on every level. I'm making my own buns from here on out. A staple bakery in the Burnaby Heights area. We got a variety of their offerings to try but do have to say that their natas (Portuguese egg tarts) are by far my favourite thing here. Would come back here just to get a dozen of those. There other baked goods (apple turnovers, tarts) were pretty standard compared to other bakeries. read more

The cake tasting was super helpful as well to figure out the flavour and icing we wanted. Also they were super generous in adding flowers to the cake that matched my wedding flowers. I absolutely LOVE this bakery. The staff is lovely and they have the most amazing Portuguese Buns. You have to try them to believe it. One of my other favourites are all their pies. There were 3 accidents on the number 1 this morning, and traffic was almost at a complete standstill on Hastings. Luckily, for me, that meant stopping in at this lovely bakery and grabbing a coffee and muffin while I waited for traffic to subside. The blueberry muffin was moist and tasty and the self serve Tuscany coffee absolutely hit the spot. I love that there was a group of older gentlemen who seemed like regulars that took over one side of the bakery. It seems that Fortuna has a new baker in the back and she is a whiz with cakes and pastries. Now they have the same great breads but they have really upped their cake game. They are my new favourite place to order a birthday cake from. I know they will use quality ingredients and the cake will be made fresh for me the day I need it. I have tried Portuguese buns from a lot of places and can honestly say that this place has the best Portuguese bun. When you toast it, it's crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It has a nice texture that if you put a lot of fillings and sauces, it doesn't compromise the integrity of the bread and make it soggy. It doesn't stick to your teeth too. The chocolate cake is very good as well. I like soft sponge cakes and this cake is one of those. I find other sweet items like nata to be too sweet for my liking. Staff are always helpful with smiles on their faces. Lots of free street parking in the area. read more

However, the filling was the same raspberry filling as the bird's nest cookie. I prefer the buttercream fillings rather than jelly. This place has fantastic bread - Portuguese bread rolls are soft and delicious, and often so warm that the staff won't put them in plastic bags due to condensation. The Portuguese corn bread is spectacular (try it toasted). The first time I purchased pastries and goodies from here it was at Christmas 2015. We were all quite disappointed with pretty much everything. Then not long ago I was shopping nearby and thought I'd get something yummy for a couple friends who were ill so I picked up some eclairs. They were extremely disappointing as this is a bakery not pre-boxed products in some big box store. The pastry part was almost ok but the chocolate was beyond understanding. While their treats may not be the best along The Heights, their bread certainly is. I've tried all of the bread that's produced in the area and none of come close to Fortuna's. The outer crust has a slight crisp with the inner being this soft chew just as you would want to expect out of a quality bread. The bread itself is also quite flavorful too! I use to buy my bread and buns here - it couldn't be beat. But lately, and this has been multiple times, the bread has been old. I think they "refresh" the day old in the oven, but it is NOT fresh. I've been to Fortuna on several occasions now, and I can say that their Portuguese buns are absolutely fantastic. They're light and fluffy on the inside, but have a nice chew to the outside. I usually buy about a half dozen of them and they last at least several days. They're pretty cheap (I think $0.25 per?) and they hold up well in sandwiches. I love this bakery. They sell delicious sausage rolls, little pizzas, roast chicken, pasteries and best of all sandwiches! I don't think its on the menu but a co worker recommend I order it. I always get two types of deli meat of any kind and cheese of my choice along with mayo and mustard. For only $4.00 you get a sandwhich stuffed with meat and cheese it's soooooo good! The best place to pick up some fresh portuguese buns! They're so soft in the inside but perfectly crusty on the outside. A cute little portuguese bakery, but I am not sure they have those little portuguese sweets like in Portugal.
