I called immediately, expecting a simple acknowledgment that the order had not been prepared as requested. Instead, the woman minimized my concern by saying, "It's just garnish." She then asked whether my guest was vegan, vegetarian, or had an allergy, even explaining that vegetarians can eat cheese. That completely missed the point. I shouldn't have to explain why I requested only pasta and sauce. Whether it was because of an allergy, dietary restriction, preference, or simply because that is what my guest wanted is irrelevant. I specifically said only pasta and sauce--nothing else, and the restaurant agreed to prepare it that way. What made the experience particularly frustrating was the unwillingness to simply say, "We misunderstood your request. I apologize. We'll remake it." Instead, I felt as though I had to defend the request itself. They did eventually replace the pasta, but when my husband picked it up, the employee continued explaining to him what I should do differently in the future and why garnish should be expected. My husband, who hadn't even been part of my original conversation with her, asked a very reasonable question: "Did you tell her when she ordered that you would be adding garnish?" Rather than acknowledging that they had not, the explanation continued. That's ultimately my issue. Why should the reason behind my request determine whether the request is respected? If a restaurant cannot accommodate special requests, simply say so when the order is placed. But if you agree to "only pasta and sauce," then that should mean exactly that. Mistakes happen. This could have been resolved in 30 seconds with an apology and a replacement. Instead, a small mistake became a disappointing customer service experience because there seemed to be more interest in explaining why the customer was wrong than acknowledging that the order wasn't prepared as requested.
