I freely admit that I was skeptical at first... But after several satisfying dinners - usually as a prelude to an evening at nearby People's Light - Fork & Bottle has not only captured my attention, it has also continued to impress. The setting, as you would undoubtedly surmise, is typically hotel-esque in nature. That being said, however, the room still manages to generate a certain generic charm. And I would also hasten to add that the service - even with our various parties of 20 or more - has been excellent in every respect. But on to the food... The dinner menu isn't quite what you'd expect. Take the starters, for instance. The usual suspects - Cesare Salad, Shrimp Cocktail, French Onion Soup, Buffalo Chicken Wings, Cheesesteak Egg Rolls - as you note, are present and accounted for. However, there are also a number of innovative diversions - such as Soft Bavarian Pretzel Sticks with Delco Lager cheese sauce, Pepperoni Bolognese Flatbread spruced up with crème fraiche, ricotta, Fontina & Parmigiano cheeses, and the Ten Million Dollar Dip that features Maine lobster, sour cream, bacon, cheddar, almond, scallions, and Ritz crackers - that manage to grab your attention. Moving on, diners may choose from either the Entrées category or take a more casual route with Sandwiches & Pub Fare. The former, which lists a number of all-too-familiar ingestibles, still manages to tempt our taste buds by teaming them up with some rather intriguing sidekicks. A not-terribly-exciting Pan Roasted Chicken, for example, is prepared agrodolce, with an alluring sour-sweet demi-glace... Chilean Sea Bass is cooked up teriyaki style... Canadian Salmon is adorned with a sweet & spicy glaze and companioned by mango & yogurt... Sautéed Lamb Sirloin is enhanced with a rich & savory Madeira sauce... and a 10oz Strip Steak basks in an addictive shallot & port wine reduction. Other main course possibilities include Angus Filet au Poivre with cognac cream, Char Grilled Pork Flat Iron marinated with garlic & oregano, Lobster Fra Diavolo, Crab Stuffed Shrimp, and Broiled Scallop & Lobster Gratin. On the other hand, should you decide to take the Sandwiches & Pub Fare route, have no fear, you will certainly not be disappointed. During previous visits, I sampled the Garganelli Pasta Bolognese and the Chicken Cobb Salad. Both were excellent. The former is comprised of buttered garganelli (egg-based pasta from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy), angus beef Bolognese, olive oil, and Parmigiano-Reggiano. The latter combines mixed lettuces, hard-boiled egg, tomato, blue cheese, bacon, and avocado sprinkled with a zesty lemon vinaigrette. Most recently, my dining companion made straight for the Crab Cake Sandwich, to which she gave an enthusiastic "thumps up." I, on the other hand, couldn't resist the considerable charms of the Chicken Cutlet & Ranch BLT, a luscious combo on toasted brioche immersed in an incredibly addictive herb ranch dressing. I should add that the delicious hand-cut French fries, which accompanied both sandwiches, were a considerable drawing card as well. The dessert menu runs the gamut... from such familiar sweet endings as Crème Brûlée and Warm Chocolate Lava Cake to Mango Lime Cheesecake with raspberry sauce, Warm Sticky Toffee Pudding garnished with vanilla ice cream, and Frozen Mississippi Mud Pie. The restaurant also offers Bassetts Ice Cream & Sorbet, should you be so inclined. For my money, however, nothing quite surpasses The Desmond's Warm Bread Pudding. Bathed in a sweet vanilla sauce, this is one outrageously rich, thoroughly delightful denouement that more than lives up to its considerable reputation. Simply not to be missed. read more

It had been a while since I had dined at the Desmond; however, it is a venue which I always enjoyed - whether it be breakfast, lunch, dinner, or brunch. My recent visit this past week served to confirm my belief that this restaurant is truly a hidden gem in the Main Line area. My dining partner and I could not have been more pleased. I started with the Iceberg Wedge salad - and it was a winner. The lettuce was crisp and fresh, and the accoutrements, diced tomatoes, applewood bacon, and sweet peppadews, were plentiful and delicious. The house-made blue cheese dressing was silky smooth and very flavorful. The salad was one of the most appetizing, aesthetically pleasing, and tasty salads that I have had enjoyed in a long, long time. The real star of the show was my entree, the sweet honey and chili broiled salmon, served with an amazing lime risotto and fresh grilled asparagus. The honey and chili sauce was outstanding; one of the most flavorful and delicious seafood entrees I've ever had! My dining companion, who enjoyed the New Zealand lamb tenderloins, could not stop raving about them. Served with fontina risotto, sauteed mushrooms, grilled asparagus, and mir-pouix marsala sauce, her entree was a real hit. We topped off the meal with a piece of key lime pie with fresh raspberries and raspberry sauce. Needless to say, not a crumb of pie or drop of sauce were left on the plate; it was that good! If there was one area which seemed to be in disarray that evening it would be the service. It was difficult to tell whether they were short-staffed or just disorganized. Adding to the confusion was the fact that the same servers were covering the dining room, the bar area, and the outside seating area. Having said that, though, I will give kudos to our server, Mike, who is a real professional. He was terrific! I cannot recommend this restaurant more highly! We had brunch here to celebrate our anniversary. This is one of the few buffet brunches still available. There is a wide assortment of breakfast and lunch items available on the buffet. You can also order made-to-order omelets, waffles, pancakes, and eggs benedict. Social distancing was in practice when we were seated which was reassuring. If ever there was a place where I want to rate it 5 stars, or even 4 and a half, and it pains my heart not to, the Hunt Room is it. The Patriarch, The Queen Mother, The Reverend Dr. Steak, Honorable Pastor Baby Back Ribs, Faithful Dining Companion and the Young 'Uns all headed out to the Hunt Room for a celebratory dinner. The hotel and the dining room are tastefully done in the way that hotels used to present themselves before the Invasion of the Chain. The room has touches of Colonial style with large brass chandeliers and such, but also lots of burgundy and tan and touches of 'hunting' (paintings of horses, men, foxes, etc.) as it is after all the "Hunt Room". The room was a mix of tables (round, square) and booths, and there are also half wall partitions creating dining 'spaces'. As it is the "Hunt Room" we were not at all surprised by the offerings - mostly meat though there is a mushroom ravioli. They had three selections of Angus Beef, several seafood selections (Salmon, Grouper, Scallops, etc.), Wild Duckling, Veal, and Chicken entrees on the menu. Surprisingly, they did have a children's menu filled with the usual fare (cheeseburgers, chicken fingers, pasta, grilled cheese). Food overall was excellent - the Prime Rib, the Filet Mignon and the NY Strip were all ordered and devoured. The herbed butter on the NY Strip made it luscious, and both the Members of the Supreme Church of the Carnivore mostly made grunting noises and nearly licked their plates clean of the Prime Rib. These are good signs. The Filet was done nicely medium well. Scallops were proclaimed quite good. The ONE soft spot was the veal - very tough, difficult to cut even with a steak knife and despite all the preparation, surprisingly tasteless. It was promptly removed from our bill with apologies. The only other soft spot would be the salads - which were, just OK. The Wedge wasn't a wedge, but a slab of iceberg, great bleu cheese and good bacon but the peppercorn dressing doesn't do it justice - it needs Russian dressing. Garden salads were 'ok'. A special moment was the service of the two soups - mushroom and lobster bisque. The soups arrived with just the solids - either the roasted mushrooms or lobster pieces. The server then hand poured the respective cream soups into the bowl for you. What a lovely, lovely presentation. Both soups were proclaimed delicious and empty bowls were returned to the kitchen. Now for service - I cannot say enough good things about our server Elide. She was fantastic, professional, swift, personable and patient. The Queen Mother has 'memory issues' and can be high maintenance. Elide handled it beautifully, repeating the order multiple times without a hint of annoyance. Each time it was as if she had never been asked. When substitutions were asked for they were cheerily handled and in one case, anticipated as the standard side is a polenta dish - and the Patriarch long ago proclaimed that we would never be so poor as to eat polenta (as he had done as a child when the food ran out). Further, and this was really special - when one of the Young 'Uns became, well, itchy, she told him that the chefs had told her there were only 40 french fries on the plate but she was sure there were more so they made a bet. Could the Young 'Un help her win by counting the fries? This kept an itchy child perfectly happy for long enough for the rest of us to finish. Bless you, Elide. The Young 'Un happily proclaimed that there were 87 fries on the plate, got a high five and as a bonus got tips on how to turn his take out bag into a house for a pet squirrel puppet. This was SO SO SO close to 5 stars it hurts my heart not to give them. I feel obligated to take off for the unremarkable salads and the tough veal. Please don't let this deter you. It's a lovely place to enjoy a traditional meal with fine service and also a place to help your children become accustomed to fine dining in a receptive environment. Everything I ate was amazing (breakfast and dessert) and I certainly left stuffed. The servers were extremely attentive and on top of everything, the dining hall was neat and so were the bathrooms I really can't think of one single grimace I had this visit! I come here every now and then because... Actually I'm not 100% sure why I come back here. It's maybe once every month or two. There are times when I love the food they put out on the lunch buffet. There are times when they let me down. For example, the days when they have flank steak are my favorite days. I can eat that forever. Today, they had a dried out pork tenderloin and a stuffed flounder dish that deserved to be at a bad banquet for a bunch of insurance salespeople at a conference. They please me about 70% of the time. But for the price I really think it should be 100%. But adding to what others have said, that bread pudding is pretty awesome. It was our first experience dining in a hotel restaurant, but the Hunt Room is definitely worth a separate trip. The restaurant is decorated to have a wood cabin feel - hence the name. I ate there two nights in a row and I had: Ceaser Salad Filet Mignon with veggies and mashed potatoes Neptunes Sampler with a lobster tail, grilled scallops & shrimp, a crab cake, mashed potatoes and asparagus. Seafood Bisque House Salad All of the food was pretty flavorful and served promptly. Any feedback around improvements would be that the dressing on the cesear salad was way too strong. I could only take a few bites and had to leave it alone. The seafood bisque had a ton of cheese in it as well which was a little different but it still had a decent enough flavor and texture. Everyone is friendly, and you can dine at your own pace without feeling rushed or like you're sstuck waiting for the bill. They updated decor is ok. Some of the nice cozy feel is gone, and there's a new, more modern vibe. The food is very different, and I don't mean this in a good way. They new sauces are not flavorful. The filet now has a dried, kind-of-cured exterior. This gives it a funny taste, and the texture of the meat is funny... Think of a thin and hard shell on a soft steak. Repulsive. The fish is oily and has a strange texture. The dessert menu also leaves much to be desired. Overall, the changes here are not for the better. read more

The Hunt Room in the swanky Desmond Hotel Malvern has one of the best Sunday Brunch Menus around for a pricey-but-still-not-that-bad $21 for adults. For your money, not only do you get to eat in a massive and ritzy restaurant, but several breakfast stations scattered throughout. These include an oven baked pastries, bagels, & donuts station, an omelet station, brunch favorites buffet, specialties made to order, a carving station, and a somewhat hidden dessert table. There's literally something for everyone, and it's all really good. I highly recommend for older people, your parents/grandparents, and families. read more

You wouldn't think to go here if you didn't know, but they have a great brunch buffet for $19. It's really quite a bargain because not only is it a large buffet with lots of options but the price also includes made to order eggs benedict, Belgian waffles and smoked salmon platters. There's an omelet station, lots of breads, muffins and pastries; the bacon and sausage are good, not too wilted or soggy, and yummy biscuits and cream chipped beef. Randomly, I really liked the Caesar salad - closest thing to mom's homemade Caesar dressing I've ever had out somewhere. I didn't make it to the carving station, but it looked pretty standard. Save room for dessert - there are lots of options, irresistible and adorable mini cakes and small bites. You won't find anything new or creative, but quality-wise the food is definitely a cut above your typical hotel or buffet food. Like the food, the atmosphere and décor are classic and traditional. There was a baby or bridal shower in an adjoining room (probably a good venue for this sort of thing), lots of families, ladies who brunch and people rolling out of bed from the hotel for a leisurely brunch. Old-fashioned decor in a nice suburban hotel, good service, classic recipes, some with a slight twist. Most of our food was well-executed but one miss was the lamb tenderloin, it was overdone. We started with cocktails, all well-made. Instead of wine with dinner we ordered a bottle of champagne and shared it with the table next door, that was fun. Everyone seemed happy in this restaurant. The prices were very fair, the markup on the champagne was less than double retail, which is unusual. I had the mixed salad which was loaded with about 17 ingredients including cherries, frisee, nuts and a nice dressing. The lamb was overdone but the orange sauce was nice. Served on a bed of grits which were tasty and perfect. A fish main course was rather dry, and w2as not finished. I went there alone, so I had three course meal JUST FOR ME! They happen to have Wagyu beef as a special, so I had to go with that. I had Seared Tuna (app), Salad deluxe (taste change), and had Waguy beef (entree). I got so full, so couldn't tackle the dessert. I wish I could go back with friends. We asked to be seated towards the back where they have benches for the booth seats. It was nice and cozy. Our friends had fillets and I had rib tips. The meat was delicious. Everyone agreed that this was should be on our list to return. I want to go back for another meal tomorrow.! Our waitress was Elide, who is a little talkative but very friendly. Had Sunday brunch here. The buffet was excellent!!!!!!!!!!! Foods served were delicious and we liked the idea that diners can order the smoked salmon,Belgian waffles and pancakes and have them brought to the table!! Dining room is lovely--service was excellent. The place is large enough where parts of the buffet are in a separate room. This makes the dining room quiet and comfortable with no looking at lines of people waiting to get at the buffet. I have one minor minor suggestion-----their creamed chipped beef needs more dried beef. There was virtually no texture to the dish and it was more like a gravy. The taste was fine but it needed more beef. WE will definitely return! read more

It's worth noting that this review is based solely on their brunch. My parents and I came here and it was all just okay. For starters, the decor could use some serious updating, which is normally no big deal if the meal is delicious. We were seated at a little booth like table but instead of being able to slide in like a regular booth, the seats were more like a couch but with wooden arms. It was uncomfortable getting in and out, the seats were lumpy, and it was nearly impossible to sit up straight because of how the seats were sort of angled back. Sharing one side of the bench, my parents had very little room. My dad mentioned his car being much more comfortable and spacious. They also had weird placements, which was sort of annoying because it's a brunch and we had multiple plates on the table between the brunch items and the items you had to order separately through your server but whatever. The food itself at the brunch was just okay, but nothing memorable. The omelette was probably the best thing I ate, but it still wasn't anything special. My dad's eggs benedict wasn't all that great, either. The carving station was unmanned, so I sort of gave up on trying any of the beef. It looked overcooked anyway so maybe that was for the better. They seemed a bit understaffed and the brunch room was small. The desserts were also just okay. I was excited to see that they had macaroons, but they were sort of crispy and hard. The bread pudding was pretty good, though. Overall, it just wasn't that great of a brunch and I've experienced much better in this area. With so many other options, I don't think I would choose The Hunt Room again. read more

After finding a groupon deal, we decided to give this place a chance. I'd give it 3.5 stars. I had the duck, which was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, it was room temperature which really detracted from the experience. There were only about 5 tables sitting there so I was perplexed why it didn't come out hot. My boyfriend ordered the sirloin which he enjoyed. They were super accommodating for food allergies and the dining area was nice. Overall, it wasn't bad. Would I pay full price to go here? What a great dinner experience. Saw a Groupon for a place so close to home so naturally had to give it a shot. We went pretty late on a Thursday night. Our server, (I wish I could remember her name) was great. The dinner ran past their closing time and not once did she make us feel rushed. Very attentive but not intrusive. She also made great menu recommendations For food we had the following: Smoked duck egg rolls - very tasty but two egg rolls for 12$ was a bit on the skimpy side. Wedge salad - great dressing, the pepadew peppers were a nice touch, portion to price ratio very good. Mushroom soup - the presentation of the soup is very unique. The bits of the soup come to you in a bowl and the soup itself is poured into the bowl tablet side. The taste was divine. Personally I prefer my soup on the hot side but that's just me. . Duck entree - an unexpected combination of flavors. The duck was served perfect at medium rare. Very clean but satisfying flavors. Smoked lamb shank - this was so good. I've eaten many lamb shanks but never smoked. The risotto and kale were the perfect accompaniment. Pot de Creme - probably the best pot de creme I've ever had. Chocolaty, so smooth and the portion was huge. Bread pudding - OMG. Just get get this. Oh yea - we also ordered drinks which were on the strong side. It was a lovely dinner experience. You must go to their Sunday brunch. It is a delight. My family meet there a couple times a year and have a great time. Buffets are tricky as you must really be on top of the food to ensure freshness; and that is exactly what they do. The buffet area is clean and food monitored, and kept fresh. All the usual items for a higher end buffet. Highlights; love the sliced meats, and their homemade home fries, the best. Also you can order Eggs Benedict (excellent) and other hot items from your server, all included! The dining area is well appointed and accommodates larger parties.
