My friend and I came here last Saturday at around 11:30am. Despite the rain and wet streets that day, the restaurant was busy and lively. We ordered our food and drinks first at the register and then they gave us a buzzer, which we took to a table of our choice. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, and fortunately, we were able to find a table inside. I ordered the Foreigner Favorite and an iced Yema Latte. My friend ordered the Veggie Scramble and an iced Euro Latte. We both requested less sweet for our drinks. This turned out good for the Euro Latte but I had to go back and ask them to increase the sweetness for the Yema Latte. The drinks were good, nothing too mind-blowing. The Foreigner Favorite was yummy. I really liked the sausages and poached eggs. I love potatoes, and I wish these were a little bit crispier. Regardless, it was an enjoyable dish overall. It was also very filling, and I ended up taking leftovers home.
We were up in the Bay Area last month for our Adored Grandson's birthday. As we have other family up in the Bay, and we don't get to be up there as often as we like, we let some of our closest family members on both my husband's side and mine know that we would be in town to celebrate AG's special day. We kicked around options for a brunch place with a varied menu that was centrally located. Foreigner checked off many boxes for us. We had almost 20 of us gathering from SoCal, Sonoma County, Crockett, San Jose, and Daly City. We hovered outside just before they got super busy and were able to score several adjacent tables so that we mostly were able to sit together. The inside dining room was full, so dining al fresco was how we managed. The fast casual approach of standing in line to order and pay, then get a pager to take to your table worked out fine. I loved my food, although I was busy talking and getting everyone situated as Dear Hubby and I were hosting the brunch, and my eggs got cold. Still, everything I had was delicious. By noon on a Sunday the line was out to the door to order, and tables were hard to come by. This seems to be very popular with the local crowd. I got to enjoy one of their crepe dishes, which was packed with delectable fillings. I would like to return whenever we get back that way again. It would be nice to get that crew back together again, but also good to be with a smaller group to more easily visit over good food, freshly prepared. The lattes were stellar, too. Very glad we found ourselves at Foreigner for our family mini-reunion!
Back for round two, and this spot is officially a keeper! Finding a place that can comfortably accommodate a party of five for a late breakfast without feeling rushed or cramped is a total win. The atmosphere was perfectly laid back--exactly the kind of "relaxed morning" vibe you want when you're looking to catch up over coffee. From a foodie perspective, the kitchen is clearly firing on all cylinders. Every dish that hit our table was a 10/10 on presentation; the plating was thoughtful and vibrant. But it wasn't just "eye candy"--the flavors were balanced and fresh. It's rare to find a place that nails both the aesthetic and the palate so consistently. If you're looking for a reliable, high-quality breakfast spot that actually feels like an experience, I'd definitely recommend giving this place a try. I'll be back for a third visit for sure!
A variety of brunch items and pastries from quiches to muffins. I tried the Dolce Barako - really liked the sprinkled Himalayan salt, which enhanced the coffee flavors. They have outlets. It's a great place to sit down and catch up and I love how it's precentral in downtown San Mateo. You would need to park in a parking structure, which is around a dollar an hour. There are also parking meters nearby.
I'd been hearing good things about Foreigner in San Mateo and finally stopped by to check it out. The inside has plenty of seating and offered some cozy vibes. We ordered the avocado egg toast and the burrata ham quiche, both served with a simple side salad. The avocado toast was fresh and well balanced, and the quiche was rich and flavorful with the burrata adding a nice creamy touch. Overall, a solid spot for a casual brunch.
First time at Foreigner and really liked this cafe/restaurant. Order at the counter and get a buzzer to put on your table or wait for your take out order. Plenty of seating inside and huge projector screen. Prices are a bit high for a morning breakfast croissant at $15.90 but it was solid. The hot chocolate is made with tcho chocolate so it is kind of bitter not sweet. I'll be back to try other menu items. Street parking only.
Decent place for brunch in downtown San Mateo! Came here on a weekend with a friend. You order at the counter and they will bring it to your table. Plenty of space available despite it being a Sunday. I decided to get the Euro Latte and the Croque Madam. I expected a bit more "wow" flavor to the Euro Latte but perhaps I got my hopes up. I felt like it lacked the Irish cream flavor. The Croque Madam was solid, with a nice runny egg yolk. I did think the ham was a bit lacking, especially along the edges. Side of potatoes were the right crispy.
A great recommendation for brunch! They have a variety of food, drinks, and desserts to choose from. The place is very comfortable for meeting up with friends and family. The service was fast because they have excellent coordination from the moment you order until your food arrives at your table!
Great brunch place off to the side of downtown San Mateo! They have both indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice considering I can bring my dogs here to dine outside. Food was very fresh and tasty - especially the croissant sandwiches and Benedict's. They got really nice vinaigrette for the salads too! Definitely would return to try other dishes
Typical Bay Area pricing- about $60 for 2 people to have a breakfast + coffee/latte. HIGHLIGHT IS THE COFFEE FOR SURE I got the avocado and egg toast (requested my egg be over medium) and a latte. The avocado looked like tube guac and resembled a New Yorker style avocado toast (not as good since they don't grow avocados in NY). I expected sliced avocado, because I was back in CA. It was tasty despite the tube guac. Prob wouldn't order it again though. Their "patio" is n the shade & nicely decorated- it's basically an impromptu COVID patio on the public sidewalk. I am glad I got to bring my dog. The service is nice and professional, and the ambiance inside is a bit like a cafe/living room...
I was in town to visit my sister and she said this is her favorite place to have breakfast or brunch! She brings everyone here when they're in town and she took me. It was such a cute spot right when we walked in. There was a line which is always a good sign when it comes to restaurants. We looked over the menu and both landed on the same item. We both got salmon eggs Benedict which looked so amazing. They have all their food displayed in a glass case which was really nice to see. I'm a visual person so that was refreshing and helped me with what I wanted. We also ordered coffee which was really good. We sat down, had some water, and great conversation. We got our coffees first and our food came out shortly after. The food tasted so good and I was very happy she took me here. 10/10 for food and service! She'll definitely have to take me back when I'm back in town! Thank you to the wonderful people who work here for the amazing food and service!
It's expensive and portions are in the smaller side. Also, no refills for drip coffee. Presentation is nice and the good taste good. The crowaffle was one piece cut up into their 4 quarters and drizzled with syrup. The 4 quarters made it look like more than it was. For $16, though?!! The chicken BLT was served warm which was nice. The shredded cheese sprinkled on top of the bread as decoration was unnecessary and extremely messy. The grilled chicken salad was basic AF. I was tempted to get the latte flight, until the cashier told me that there was no caffeine and they taste like how they sound. You order first then take a seat and they bring your food to you. There's not much service beyond that. Everything else is self serve. Too expensive for portions is what will deter me from this spot.
I work (very) nearby, and I may have just found my favorite hangout in downtown San Mateo for much needed work breaks and catching some fresh air over a well-crafted caffeinated drink. You order from the friendly people at the walk-up kiosk, take a hockey puck pager, choose for your table from plenty of indoor and outdoor options, and your food/drink magically and quickly appears. An enjoyable light lunch menu, good coffee, attentive fast and friendly service, plus a great indoor/outdoor seating area? This place hits all items on my coffee hangout checklist. read more

We visited Foreigner Cafe based on a friend's recommendation, and it did not disappoint. There were so many appealing options that I had a hard time deciding what to order. Although you have to wait in line to place your order, it moved smoothly. Despite the crowd, we ordered quickly and found a table with no delay. I ended up getting the smoked salmon toast, which was delicious! My husband had the Morning Breakfast Croissant, our friend chose the butternut squash tartine, and we all shared a strawberry and Nutella crepe for the table. Everyone enjoyed their plates, and we devoured the crepe--it was all really good. I also appreciated the plant-based coffee options they offer, which can be hard to find. I had the Emerald Matchai, and it was really tasty. Even though it's somewhat self-service, the plates are delivered to your table. The waiter who brought our food was so nice and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely return if we're in the area. Highly recommended! read more
Great for brunch! We visited Foreigner on a Sunday around 11AM and found it very busy. There was a line to order at the counter, but it moved quickly and gave us a chance to study the menu. The interior was brightly lit, with cute decor - hanging plants, neon signage, some antiques, etc. They also had a whole display of food models, so you could see what each dish looks like, which was super helpful. For drinks, I got an Iced Orange Blossom Latte, which was the only mediocre item of our meal. The Orange Blossom flavor was so faint, it was entirely lost in the coffee. However, my friend's Iced Red Velvet Latte was fantastic. For food, I chose the Roasted Butternut Squash Toast, which was delicious. The cream cheese and balsamic honey maple glaze went together so well, and the dish was both healthy and filling. We also ordered the Strawberry Delight Croffle to share between the 4 of us. This was amazing, and we loved the flakey dough - truly the perfect crossover of a waffle and croissant. My friends enjoyed their food as well, including the Salmon Eggs Benedict and Nutella Puff. Pretty echoey and loud in the main room. Nice outdoor seating along the sidewalk and a few tables and bar seats in the entryway. This is an order at the register and then find your seat place. They bring the food out to you. Large menu, lots of choices, examples of many dishes in the case, for visual deciders! Bacon eggs Benedict is ever so slightly spicy, but very mild. Comes with a salad. Quiche, which you can see in the case by the register, also comes with a side salad with an orange vinaigrette. Very tasty. There were 5 quiche flavors on the day we came in. We tried the salmon and the bacon and both were good enough to get again. Also got a Euro coffee that was great - toffee, Irish cream and vanilla - a perfect level of sweetness. Randomly parked across the street from Foreigner on our way to sweetgreen and jumped at the chance to finally try it out! This has been on my bookmarks for a while. Omelet dishes end at 2:30pm but most everything else is fair game. I thought it was pretty cool how their house coffee is Kapeng Barako, bold nutty dark roast from the Philippines. Totally forgot to order their colorfully vibrant plant latte flight so I've gotta go back for that! Eats: *Sexy French Toast: sweet banana nut bread crowned with berries & banana slices *Avocado Egg Toast *Smoked Salmon Toast *Turkey Pesto Crepe Everything was presented so beautifully and tasted fresh. Such a chill, hipster vibe. Order at the counter and staff will bring the food out to you. Just place the beeper on the designated spot on the table. The toasts automatically arrive with potatoes and fruit or salad. The French toast was made with thick, dense banana nut bread, ripe berries, banana slices, all drizzled with syrup and a light dusting of powdered sugar. The turkey pesto crepe arrived first. It wasn't cooked longer/toasted like I'm used to when it comes to crepes, but still good, just soft. Melted cheese was layered nicely with the turkey slices. So much healthy arugula on top! Lots of beverages to choose from. They've even got mimosas aside from the variety of coffee drinks. So sad I forgot about the flight of 4 plant based drinks in pretty colors: red beets, yellow turmeric, green matcha chai, blue spirulina packed with antioxidants. read more

I visited Foreigner on a Saturday morning around 11 am, and there was a bit of a line (about a 15-minute wait). The seating inside was spacious, and they also had a cozy outdoor area right in front of the store. I was with a group of 5, and we all ordered something different. I went with the Red Velvet Latte, which tasted just like a red velvet cake--super flavorful and a fun twist on a classic drink! I also tried the Banana Nutella Croffle, which was delicious. It had much more Nutella than I expected, which I loved. As for the rest of my group, they ordered Plant-Based Lattes, and two of the four were quite drinkable. However, the other two didn't quite hit the mark for us; they just tasted like warm milk without much flavor. It might just be our taste buds, though! We also tried a smoothie, which was fresh, and the affogato was fantastic. The Matcha Latte, however, wasn't for me--definitely a hard pass. A spacious brunch/cafe place in downtown San Mateo. They have drinks, sandwiches and as advertised brunch all day. There's many variety on the menu so browse through the menu before ordering. The main flow of the restaurant is order at counter, grab disc, choose seats, put disc on sticker, wait for food. Water is self service. Sunday brunch is my favorite time of the week so I had high expectations when I ordered a high priced salmon benedict. Unfortunately, the egg was not runny ( last video) . I brought it back to the staff, they apologized and graciously remade the benedict with a runnier egg. A classic egg benedict, I usually like it runny with more hollandaise sauce. They were still light on the hollandaise. Salmon was smoked and Benedict was alright . Parking was easy to find with a garage that is 5 minutes away. read more
Cute spot for a pretty good brunch. Very high 3 stars. PARKING Pretty easy at a paid spot, about $1.25 per hour. SERVICE Very nice. I left a bag with a plant under our table, and the staff found it and had it set aside. THE WAIT No wait on a Friday at lunchtime. They were somewhat busy but had plenty of tables (all the window tables were taken though), and there was only one person ahead of us in line to order. It was nice that they have visual representations of all of their food - made it much easier to order! THE COST $42.87 total for two brunch entrees and a latte. THE FOOD * Morning Breakfast Crossant ($13.95) - 3 stars Fresh ingredients and looks lovely, but honestly was a bit light, and I found the croissant on the stale side. * Roasted Butternut Squash Toast ($14.50) - 3.5 stars This was filling and pretty interesting. I recently went for lunch on a Friday, it was quite busy! I ordered a smoked salmon Benedict, which seems to be my usual. Lightly dressed salad with a citrusy dressing, potatoes with tender cooked bell peppers and onions, plus a delicious smoked salmon Benedict. Outdoor dining is available, bring a jacket. Visited here for Saturday brunch with a friend. It was such a popular place. Lineup was long on a chilly Saturday morning. Menu was straightforward and not complete. I would recommend to browse the display of food in addition to the menu to get the full picture. Regardless, process is simple. Order at counter, get a disc, find a table, slam the disc over the sticker, then wait. Service was fast and speedy. Environment was cozy. Food was decent. Price was good. I got the salmon quiche to go. It was served the first and we tried some. Very creamy and nicely flavored. I ordered veggie scramble. Pretty solid brunch. Nice flavor and crusted bread. I got Americano. My friend got latte I believe. Flavor was good. Some parking available around. It is right in the downtown of San Mateo. So it might take some time during prime time. LOVE LOVE LOVE! We were strolling around downtown San Mateo in search of a brunch spot and the floral interior caught our eyes. Upon entering, you order at the front, are given a pager to set on the sticker on your table, and food is delivered to you promptly. We decided to sit indoors where a HUGEEE projector was playing a sports channel. It almost reminded me of similar ambiance to Foreign Cinema in SF with the movie playing in the background! RED VELVET LATTE: beautiful artwork with whipped cream peaks. Rich and smooth with strong red velvet flavor and on the sweeter side DOLCE BARAKO: strong and fragrant! Less sweet than the red velvet but still had a touch of dolce. My bf's group went another time and said they prefer the hot drinks over the iced ones. There's a mojito latte on the menu that I'm SUPER interested in trying in the future! TUNA MELT CROFFLE: SOOO crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside of the croissant. They put the works in the tuna melt (look at that sauce drizzle!) HAM & BURRATA QUICHE: This is the best quiche I've ever had from a brunch place. It was perfectly fluffy and the cheese was nicely incorporated to where it didn't feel like I was chomping on cheese chunks but instead, each bite was infused with warm soft melty goodness. They also don't skimp out on the ham so each bite was perf. I was also pleasantly surprised by the salad tossed with a light drizzle of vinaigrette that paired well with the richness of the quiche 10/10 would go again! It's been awhile since I came for a meal and still this place is hopping. I came on a Sunday during the time it was still considered brunch time. There was a long line to order (going out the door), but it moved quickly. Despite it being so busy, the tables turned quickly. There's no table service and you have to order at the counter; they bring your order to your table. I ordered the Croque Madam--it was served with house potatoes. Returned to this spot after a long while. This place is convieniently located in downtown San Mateo with plenty of parking in the area. It is my go to spot since I came here for the first time 2 years ago. it is lite and busy but it is so easy to find a table. The restaurant has a fast food way of ordering but it is classy and chill. They have plenty of varieties of food and drinks to choose from and pricing are reasonable. I enjoy thier breakfast brunch and Barako coffee as I comfortably seat at a corner table enjoying a good read. Highly recommend this spot for everyone! read more

The Foreigner has a cute ambiance when you first go in and there is a decent amount of seating area. I suggest you take a look at the sample plates at the food window next to the register as there some displayed that aren't available on the scannable QR mobile menu which is what I went for and enjoyed what I ordered! The service was also quick and efficient having the self serve water station. A great brunch spot! read more

Had another amazing brunch at the Foreigner! The interior decor is bright and cozy. At 10:30am on Sunday, the restaurant was already filled with energetic people. We ordered lavender latte, salmon and egg Benedict, Denver omelette, and chicken mushroom crepe. Man oh man, everything was so tasty and we enjoyed every single bite. A nice casual brunch spot! Came on a Wednesday morning and it wasn't too busy, you order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. I ordered a London fog and the tuna melt croffle. I felt that my drink was a bit bland, but the croffle was packed with a surprising amount of tuna. I enjoyed the sauce they had on it too. It was a bit noisy inside, but the tables were bussed quickly and had plenty of seating. A good place to meet with friends! read more

I got the salmon toast and Euro latte and both were really good! The French bread is a little thick, but it was nice to try because it was made with banana bread. The only downside is that seating is a little difficult to find on the weekends because you get the seats after you order, and the line to order is always long. read more
Came here on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't that busy. We ordered the California Bagel and the Hungarian Lesco Soup. The soup was delicious! The broth was hearty and thick and the sausage was chewy and cooked really well. We liked the sourdough toast on the side as we used it to dip into the soup. The California bagel was packed with ingredients like avocado, lettuce, tomato, an egg, and cheese along with the traditional cream cheese. It was filling and was perfect for brunch. The only thing I didn't like is how none of the tables were clean so we had to bus a table on our own in order to sit down but overall the food was delicious and we'll be back to try other options on the menu. read more
The place was packed for Brunch on the Sunday we stopped by. That normally is a good indicator of the restaurant's overall performance regarding food, service, etc. Service - This is not your normal sit down restaurant. Place your order at the cashier and receive a pager/locating device. Then, struggle to find a table. As David K mentioned, they have a display case showing many the food items. Of course there are pros and cons to this strategy. Food - Here is where the cons come in. While the Avocado Egg Toast was depicted accurately, some of the other items we ordered were not. Note that the "Toasts" items are served on some of the thickest slices of bread that we have ever seen/encountered. That can go either way, depending on the items topping it. Here, it went in a positive direction. The Tuna Melt Croffle, Croque Madame, Strawberry & Jam Croffle, and Sexy French Toast were all smaller is size/portion that we expected. The Tuna Melt Croffle had more avocado than tuna. The Croque Madame was a bit pricey based on what we received. Everything tasted good, though. Hmm, I am not sure we will be back. Based on how crowded it was, we might be in the minority. read more

We came down here for my mom's birthday based off the great reviews. Unfortunately, it was a bit underwhelming. Let's start with the good. (1) Plenty of seating when we arrived. (2) Parking wasn't too bad for a Sunday morning. Now, the bad. (1) When we came in, the staff wasn't welcoming. It took a while before someone acknowledged us at the register. (2) For a restaurant where you order at the counter, the food was pricey. (3) I can justify paying a higher price if the food was great, but it was mediocre. My potatoes were luke warm and not crispy and my salmon Benedict had cucumber slices. The combination didn't taste good. Please heat your potatoes more and consider replacing the cucumber with sautéed spinach. Overall, this was place was just alright. With a few minor changes, it can be truly great. read more

So far, I have had the Salmon Eggs Benedict and the Croffle. The Eggs Benedict is delicious and my favorite so far. Glad I finally got to try a Croffle. It was good but still love my waffles. My friend had the chicken and mushroom crepe but did not care for it. Can't wait go back and try more of the items on the menu. Friendly staff and quick service. read more
This is a nice place in downtown San Mateo for breakfast/lunch. It's an American style cafe, with many options of food and drinks. This is a walk in and order, than you grab your own seats kind of resturant. This places gets pretty popular with long lines during the weekend, so expect a little bit of wait time. Personally, I really like the food they have there. Have a pretty aestic, great for some cute pictures. I would recommend coming to try if your looking for a simple American cafe for breakfast.lunch or brunch! read more

Foreigner is a classic American brunch spot in DT San Mateo. I always order the Salmon Avocado Toast and it never disappoints. They also have a variety of different colored lattes. Although there's plenty of seating, that can be hard to find on a weekend morning. The service is order at the counter and they'll bring the food to you. Though it's a busy spot, they are relatively quick with bringing food to the table. read more

Great brunch and lunch spot. I had a banana peanut shake and a crepe both of which were very good and disappeared fast. All the food had a great presentation as well. I appreciated that they had food prepared and presented near the ordering counter so you could see what you would be getting with your order. Note that the food is high end but the dining area is pretty casual. Highly recommend this spot overall. read more

Who doesn't love a good brunch place offering a diverse menu? Foreigner is located in downtown San Mateo, just a stone's throw from El Camino Real. Parking can be difficult as it's still on the outskirts of downtown. After placing your order at the counter on the right side, you find an open seat either at the limited tables by the cashier or in the larger dining room to the left. Service has been relatively quick during my past 2 visits here. I usually go with their Healthy Start Special(egg white, cucumber, tomato, caper berry, seasonal fruits & avocado) and a Cappuccino. This is a light combo and just enough to power me up. Service has been solid and this place is always lively. read more

Stopped by for a late lunch on a hot Sunday. Tried the strawberry delight and tuna meld croffles. Good value. Just the right portion size, well prepared and nice flavors. The croffle is basically a thin waffle. I couldn't pick out any croissant aspects of it. Still, very good. Good service, nice atmosphere. read more

I can't seem to reserve a table? I tried to do it from the official website which brought me to Yelp but there is no reservation button here? also tried to call and left messages but never got a return call. Any help will be appreciated? :D
Not sure if they take resos as I've we've never had to - we go there pretty often. The space is pretty big so you might be able to just walk in unless you have a particularly big party

No, I don't think so. I ordered by the glass last time I went and bottomless mimosas aren't offered on their brunch menu.

According to their instagram, they serve the Merienda menu Monday-Sunday from 2:30pm-5pm! You can make reservations on their website for that.

They have an outdoor patio, so I assume you can dine with your pet leashed outdoors. Perhaps call the establishment for assurance.

I didn't have any trouble getting seated, you won't either

Yes, there are plenty of small corners to sip coffee, free WiFi and get some work done.
Is this place baby friendly ? Diaper changing table and high chair, available?
I have seen wooden high chairs, the bathroom is located outdoors in the hall shared with other companies and I have never used it so I am not sure about the bathrooms being kid friendly

Yes. Go to their website to order online for takeout. The website ordering process is pretty straightforward and simple.
Is it a good study spot?
No. Space is very limited and lots of people were looking for seats to eat their food. Taking up a spot for hours to study would be kind of a dick move.
Are there gluten free options for bread/pastries?
Yes for pastries, not sure about bread
