a glass of beer on a coaster

New establishment, just opened in July! My husband and I made a U Turn to check this place out while driving to Flight 93 Memorial. There was a food truck serving BBQ on a Sunday, and there were a good bit of people here enjoying the beer. The woman working behind the bar was so kind and helpful and gave my husband several large beer samples before he actually ordered something. He had the winter lager, and said it was amazing! Unfortunately, they didn't have that exact beer "to to" but they had plenty of others to choose from. The layout and decor was really nice, and very clean. I wish this business the best of luck, it is in a great location (right on Lincoln Highway) and everyone there seemed very passionate about the beer they were brewing! I heard a few people talking about updates on their Facebook page, I would check that out for events and updates!

Upon entering, you're greeted by an intimate ambiance that immediately sets the stage for a memorable experience. The brewery's modest size adds to its charm, fostering an inviting atmosphere where patrons can connect over their shared love for craft beer. Despite its size, packs a punch with its beer selection. From the moment you peruse the menu, it's evident that quality takes precedence here. Each brew is crafted with care and attention to detail, resulting in a lineup that's sure to please even the most discerning palate. During my visit, I had the pleasure of sampling several of their offerings, and I was thoroughly impressed. From crisp lagers to robust stouts, each beer showcased a unique flavor profile that left me craving more. Standouts included their [mention specific standout beers], which demonstrated the brewmaster's skill and creativity. This brewery has been on my radar for quite some time, and we finally seized the opportunity to pay it a visit. Having opened its doors in July 2022, it's nearing its second anniversary. I'm already looking forward to returning, particularly during the summer months. The beers we sampled were all delightful. Upon the owner's recommendation, we tried the cream ale, and I inquired if it was a flagship brew. To my surprise, he mentioned it was a recent creation, and it truly impressed. The cream ale was exceptional, showcasing the brewery's knack for crafting distinct flavors. Additionally, the hazy beer left a lasting impression with its delightful juiciness, striking a perfect balance of flavors. They had a root beer that is non-alcoholic that I was hoping they canned to take home to my son. Unfortunately he said it's easy to make but difficult to can. Right now it's served only on the tap. We will need to bring him with us next visit.

If you are in the area you MUST STOP HERE!! We were passing through and considered staying just to have more beer. Styles were on point, server/owners were knowledgeable and friendly, and it was a great place to just hang. We've been to over 500 breweries and this one is in the top 10 of experiences. Do not miss it!

Fantastic spot to have a drink! We stopped after going to the Flight 93 memorial on a recommendation from someone in Bedford. Great owners who were friendly and open to chatting with us. Had the Pumpkin White Russian which was super delicious!! Loved the names of the drinks and beers... the owner is very creative! They even have t-shirts and glasses...bought those as souvenirs. We were glad we stopped!

This time I was passing by at dinner time so checked it out. It was Trivia Night so I opted for outside at one of the small 3 patio tables. The street has an outdoor dining vibe with two other restaurants also with outdoor seating. You put in your order at the bar (at least this Wednesday night) with a welcoming bartender on easy check list for sushi and ramen. I was stopping on the late side and those finishing their meals were clearly enjoying themselves. Many knew each other across tables as lots of stopping by for chats among friends. The pork belly in the ramen was definitely my jam as it had a crunchy top with easy to come apart pieces. Definitely the highlight. Not nearly as big a fan of the Asian greens which fell into almost a paste, the mushrooms not looking like they were fresh (to be fair there is a shiitake option I missed), and the smoked eggplant a little too chewy. And I took a flyer on the "special broth" without asking what it was so that is on me. But the really dark perhaps cinnamon infused (don't hold me to it) version was not something for me. The noodles were ample but not plentiful and were legit. So I think I'd opt for Nori instead of Asian greens next time and go with more traditional toppings. But definitely endorse the pork belly. I tried a smoked eggplant sushi role as something new. Just fine, I've tried it but I'll try another combo they have next time. And I know the economics are tough these days and specialty roles are routinely low teens in cost, but I'd suggest a two tier pricing scheme rather than $13.00 for one with a single ingredient and just 6 rather than normally 8 for specialty rolls. Glad I stopped and I will again to try some of the other fare. Just may be a little more traditional in my choices next time.

I've spent a bunch of time in the area in the other seasons but seeing it spring was new for me. So was lunch at Firewater. I enjoyed both. As you might think from the name, Firewater is all about the drinks. Not only do they look beautiful but they punch above their weight in a tourist mecca. My Baby Got Daq was so much better than one would imagine for a cocktail on tap. Served in a coupe, this traditional daiquiri was made with anjeo rum, which gave it a gorgeous brown color. The simple (traditional with a twist -- pineapple!) recipe (lime and sugar) allowed all the ingredients to sing and you would be hard-pressed to tell that it came from a tap, rather than a bartender's careful hand. Drink in hand, the food menu acquitted itself just as nicely. My large (Southern) party made short work of the deviled egg appetizer. Likewise, my brisket sandwich (on gluten-free bread and served with a side of grits) was filling, smoky (with a crunchy bark) and deeply-flavorful.My group took advantage of the nice weather and are outside, enjoying the lovely water views and pleasant service. With a population the size of a New England liberal arts college, odds are if you're patronizing Firewater you're not a local. That's fine. Tourist cities need tourist dollars. Spend yours here. While in Deep Creek, this will become a trusted lunch destination. I'm just surprised I 'discovered' it so late after multiple trips.

While the hostess initially quoted a two-hour wait and came across a bit cold, things improved quickly. As we settled in with some truly delicious cocktails--a smoked old fashioned and a playful Plum-P Up the Jam--we ended up being seated in just about 20 minutes. Once at our table, the experience really shined. Our waitress was wonderful: warm, knowledgeable, and incredibly friendly. The food was excellent and beautifully prepared. I enjoyed the steak frites, cooked perfectly, while my wife had the scallops, which were rich, tender, and full of flavor. Despite the rocky start, the evening turned into a fantastic birthday dinner in a stunning part of Maryland. Firewater Kitchen & Bar delivered a memorable meal, and we were glad we chose it for the celebration.

Made arrangements with Balance owner and staff to stay "open" for our team. We pre-ordered our entrees and apps so when we arrived our food orders were already underway. Had drink orders taken and within minutes our drinks and appetizers were served. We had the place to ourselves with a wonderful waiter, Trenton, his assistant, a bartender, chef Dallas and his wife who owns the establishment but I cannot remember her name. First and foremost, the menu is awesome, diverse, unique and wide ranging. Prices are very reasonable and portions very good. The really reason to return is the taste. 12 guys had 6 or 7 different dishes and everyone raved at how good their choice was. Drinks were excellent and complimentary dessert samplings were awesome. The service was excellent, we were treated like special. My hats off to them for wanting to stay "open"; the restaurant closed to the public at 9:30 and serve us. Granted, it was a pretty good bill but I had called another restaurant in the area explaining our situation and they turned us down. I believe our proprietor asked her staff if they wanted to oblige us and she told me that their reply was something along the lines of "we're going to be here anyway cleaning up, why not make some money." Please, if you're in town or even close, give Balance a try, I guarantee you will be glad you did. When I found them online I was jazzed about the menu. They have a lot of unique options which I'm a huge fan of. I don't need to worry about taking my humans even though they'll be ordering off the regular menu) was promising. The space itself is funky in a good way and spacious. It spans a few different rooms which all have their own vibe, and we saw igloos outside! I'd say our food had a 60/40 success rate. The hummus was seriously awesome, as was the risotto. My protein power bowl was so tasty with a great dressing and I absolutely love that they have creative vegetarian options. Our server was so kind, but I'm not quite sure where they were for most of our visit. Again... maybe an off night. We'd try it again. If you're someone who needs a changing table, they have one!

Roll nicely toasted, tons of shrimp, bacon with lettuce and tomato. It was almost like a po' boy, except the shrimp were sautéed not fried. And the garlic truffle potato chips! The space has a cozy, slightly speakeasy feel, with plenty of seating at the bar and tables for dinner. The music area is separate from the bar and dining area where we sat, which makes the layout feel lively without having the music sit directly on top of your entrée. There is also a related shop next door, The Naked Olive, where you can buy olive oils, balsamics, tapenades, and other dangerous things you convince yourself are "for later." By the time we were leaving early Saturday evening, they were getting ready for live music, which added to the local, come-stay-awhile feel. We started with a classic martini, and it was excellent. Perfectly balanced, cold, briny, slightly sweet, and served with blue cheese olives. A proper martini is not just a drink, it is a small personality test. We also tried the monthly special, the Dirty Devil, which I believe had bourbon, Coke, and salted caramel. It was good, but the classic martini was the clear winner for me. Service was friendly and helpful. I believe our server was James, and he helped us work through the menu without making us feel like we were preparing for a graduate seminar in small plates. They also honored us with a military discount, which I sincerely appreciated. Food wise, we ordered the Truffled Mushroom Pizza, which was genuinely good, with mushrooms, onions, peppers, and mozzarella. My only note is that the truffle was very subtle, maybe attending more in spirit than in full costume, but the pizza itself worked and I enjoyed it. We also had the Chicken Chesapeake, a sous vide chicken breast topped with crab and Chesapeake sauce. It came with a house salad and house vinaigrette, which was standard but good. As chicken breast goes, the entrée was well cooked, tender, and nicely finished. The crab and seasoning gave it some personality, which chicken breast often desperately needs. The mashed potatoes were hearty and solid. The vegetable du jour was the one underwhelming part of the meal; I am still not entirely sure what it was, and I do not think it was sure either. Overall, I enjoyed The Naked Olive Lounge. It may not be in my top three Berkeley Springs restaurants thus far, but it is definitely a solid entry in the local rotation. The ambiance is warm, the layout is comfortable, the service is friendly, the martinis are legitimately excellent, and the food is good, even if a few details could be stronger. The price point was reasonable, and I would happily come back, especially for a classic martini and live music.
