Ok, I have to be honest... The homemade pork dumplings would be better if the pork itself was better, and the soy. Not bad, but not something I would get again either. I also got sesame chicken for takeout. Never again. I don't expect this dish to be special, but this was not good, even by takeout standards. It's too bad bc the portion is generous, but the chicken, the preparation, the sauce, just not good, at all. Like a frozen supermarket version would be WAY better. HOWEVER... The black pepper fish dish was AMAZING. Like I loved that, absolutely delicious! I will come back just for this one dish, and actually will try their shrimp / chicken versions of it as well. (I expect the chicken itself for that to not be the same as the icky breaded sesame ver). I had to order rice for it extra, not a fan of that, but it was so good I didn't care. I could eat this one dish 2 or 3 times a week, np. The service was pleasant and it's nice inside. One tip, they have an in house and a takeout menu, look exactly the same to me. I think some items, like sesame chicken, they make a bit more expensive IF it's take out. Not a fan of that either, but i wouldn't be too bothered if it was good! Which it wasn't, ha. So smart thing to do if u eat there is just order everything for the table and then pack it up when u leave, save a couple bucks. I went to this Chinese place a while back with a group, having previously been to the Szechuan spot that used to be in this location, So Do Fun. Compared to there, the menu is pretty different, including dim sum and some classic American-Chinese dishes, with less emphasis on spicier fish dishes like Suan Cai Yu. Negatively, they used to give these rather delicious pickled vegetables to begin with, but now it's peanuts. They have a few interesting drinks, and I had something made with matcha and a few other things for around $6, which was decent. In general, the prices were pretty reasonable for the quality, with a couple of pretty good things, and a couple of dishes I disliked. For the food, we had a handful of dim sum/appetizers and some main dishes. Of the dim sum, the Dan Dan Noodles at $9 were decent but needed more chew and spice. The Shredded Tofu Skin With Scallion Oil, also $9, was good, with crunchy tofu skin and solid umami flavor. My least favorite was the XLB/Pork Soup Dumplings, which were $8 for 4. Though pretty well-flavored, they lacked soup, and the skin was too thick. For main dishes, I liked the $25 Cumin Beef. It was moderately tender, and there was enough cumin flavor. Also solid was the Twice Cooked Pork for $18, with there not being too much douchi/fermented black bean for it to be too salty. The $20 Dry Pot With Chicken was alright. There was a good amount of meat, but it lacked much mala, so it lacked flavor. If the spices were there, this would have been very tasty. The King Pao Chicken for $16 was OK, too. It was more American-style, being a tad too sweet for my liking, but thankfully, the breading wasn't too thick. Speaking of sweet, I disliked the $25 Crispy Shredded Beef. This felt like one of the few overpriced things, with the batter being too thick as well. For veggies, the The $16 Dry Sauteed String Beans were solid/standard, with the beans being properly charred. Better was the Eggplant In Garlic Sauce for $16, with plenty of flavor. My least favorite dish by a mile was the $20 Stir-Fried Asparagus With Rice Cakes. Outside of it being extremely bland, the rice cakes lacked texture. The food here was alright. It ranged from good to OK to alright to bad, depending on the dish. I might go back and try the Pagoda Pork Belly, as the only other spot I know of selling this has stopped, but I am hesitant due to the general quality. The prices are reasonable, but there's better Chinese, and I definitely preferred the old place in the same location a lot more. read more

For U is one of my favorite hidden gems in the city, and a place I find myself returning to again and again. It's special to me because I order their work lunch deals all the time -- you can get a generous portion of meat with rice for under $15, which is almost unheard of in NYC. Prices are usual for NY out-of-Chinatown Chinese... except for the fish dishes, which are expensive... in the $40s. The Szechuan food is very spicey... but also excellent. I had chicken with broccoli with white rice, came with a side of soup and I chose a spring roll. My husband ordered chicken with garlic sauce and we each placed an order for pork soup dumplings. Each soup dumplings order comes with 4. Our food was delicious. Soup dumplings were fresh and flavorful. We were adventurous and also ordered the spicy beef noodle soup. It was hot and spicy, warm and comforting. Noodles were firm and the beef was so very tender. The broth was fresh, hot and had a depth of flavor from the smoky spice used, and the hints of beef that infused with the broth. It was delightful. We took that one home because we couldn't finish it after eating our large lunch specials. The lunch specials offer a good sizable portion of white rice, some pickled cucumbers, spring roll and your choice of meat in a very big bento box. My favorite Chinese in New York- which obviously is a tough bar given the abundance of amazing food across Chinatown. But this truly is so good. Came here during the torrential pour of NYC (thus far) in 2023. Restaurant owner was very hospitable, and gave us good recommendations across the board, and also kept to their word about the promos ($1 soup dumplings!). They also had a promo for their beef skewers so we got a set of those. Our mains we had baked fish (烤鱼) and boiled beef in chili oil (水煮牛?). They were both tasty. The portion size for the beef was incredible, and overall was not that spicy but still good. The baked fish was a bit bland, but the fish was very big. There were also some dry parts of the fish, that may have happened because there was not enough liquid on the pan. This is a step below a place like Mountain House or Chi, since the decor is not as fancy and the presentation for dishes is more common place. But the food is still very good, and I would recommend as it is cheaper than the aforementioned places. Corkage was only $15 here, so I would highly recommend doing that if you are looking for a place to eat quality food and drink some nice wine. Soup Dumplings With Pork (5/5): Soup dumplings are hard to get right and do well. The meat needs to be well-flavored and the soup needs to maintain a nice pocket. This place does both! Cold Noodles In Sesame Sauce (5/5): This dish balances the peanut flavor and oil. I love the fresh vegetable and herb on top and brings the dish all together! Five of us pile into a red vinyl booth near the window and order enough to feed a small army. The staff is always friendly and makes sure we're well taken care of with water, tea, fresh plates. The food comes out fairly quickly, even when we order loads of dishes. The Dan Dan noodles have an unexpected spicy kick to them. Small portion but very good. The dim sum platter is underwhelming. Not much flavor and almost no protein aside from the small pieces of shrimp inside the dumplings. The soup dumplings don't have much soup inside of them lately but the flavor is always on point. The general Tso chicken has really good sauce on it. The garlic chicken, cashew chicken, and sizzling beef (very greasy) are our favorite dishes here. And their broccoli side with sauce is seriously delicious.
