For the health and safety of your eye, DO NOT go to Foothill Eye for your care. I was given options for treatment (or non-treatment as the case may be) for a serious retina issue that were incorrect; one was potentially seriously harmful to my eye, the other lead me to buy expensive eye drops that were ultimately useless and would never have improved the condition (per a second opinion I sought after the horrible treatment I received at Foothill), and the third was just "I don't want to do the surgery." The worst was the way I was treated by the doctor, who was condescending, and rather than taking the time to answer my questions about my serious and somewhat scary diagnosis, literally handed me my coat and walked me out to the front desk while I'm still trying to ask questions, then barked at me to open up 2 browsers on my phone, typed in my diagnosis and told me to go home and Google it. I have never received such poor treatment from a medical facility, it was traumatic, and I will not be going back. If you're considering Foothill Eye I would recommend looking elsewhere if you care about your eyes. read more

Dr. Botkin is kind, calming and very knowledgeable. I am considering Lasik eye surgery and he was able to explain all of the pros and cons in a clear manner. He also completed an exam. I highly recommend him. read more

Terrible experience. Brought my 18 month old daughter in for a diagnosis. The representatives in the front gave me a really hard time because I did not have a physical copy of my medical card. I had a copy via PDF directly from my medical benefit website. I offered to email and they said no. The representative at the front desk kept getting questioned by another representative in a back office. My daughter was diagnosed and was told she would need to have a surgical procedure done at a center in Beverly Hills and that someone would be contacting me to set up an appointment. It has now been 4 weeks since the appointment and I have had zero follow up. I have called over and over, I have left several voicemails, yet I cannot get through to anyone. I contacted my insurance company to which they tell me that Foothill Eye Institute has not submitted any requests for surgery. This has been a very frustrating experience, not to mention rude and unprofessional. read more

I had the worst experience at Foothill Eye Institute in Pasadena and I felt I should warn future clients! I scheduled appts to be seen first in the morning 7:50am, only to get there before the staff. The office was actually dark and I wasn't allowed in until after 8am. I was told the front desk staff were running late. This pushed my appointment back very late. On a different date, I met with another doctor for a different reason and was told I would receive a call back within 4-5 days with a response to an authorization ... after calling at least 4 times (leaving messages and being hung up on) I finally reached someone on the 14th day. I was placed on hold for over 30 minutes several times, I was lied too, and my calls were never returned and that was after I asked to speak to Management staff (Veronica, Monica, Melissa, etc). I filed a formal complaint with my Medical Group since they are the ones who referred me. They are the most UNPROFESSIONAL office! Stay away! read more

The service here is very poor and their communication is worse. Although they all seem very nice, I don't think they really care about their patients. I was referred by my dermatologist because of a small growth on my eyelid. This process started in February 2020. They decided to give me a full vision test before I saw the doctor. She thought the growth was likely a basel cell and did a couple scrapings. She referred me to a surgeon who was not going to be available for almost 4 weeks. In March I saw the surgeon and she did the biopsy. A week later she called to say it was, in fact, a basal cell carcinoma. Then COVID closures came. I called in early April to see what was going on and the surgeon did call me back but said they were not scheduling any surgeries. Finally in May I saw the surgeon but only AFTER I called to ask for an appointment) so she could tell me my options and what to expect (and they could bill my insurance company). Was told she did not know when surgery would be scheduled. I called early June to see what was up and was told the surgery scheduler would call me. After waiting a full week for a call back, I called my dermatologist to refer me to another surgeon. Since then I have had a phone intake, a phone consult with the surgeon and am scheduled for the surgery--all within a week. read more

Literally the best! I really felt so much care and interest to ensure that we would get the proper resolution with The right steps! I felt like they cared for me as if I was family. Sharon really goes the extra mile and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate this. i wish to bring a focus on an employee of FOOTHILL EYE INSTITUTE of PASADENA whose dedication and ability to represent the needful patients and great ophthalmologists there whom we patients are sometimes amiss re scheduling an appointment or other labyrinthine catacombs especially when we are in dire need of someone we trust to navigate for us as an employee there deserves some recognition name MAILIE (sp?) who always seems to find what i cannot for instance when i was having questions re my cataracts surgery I called to get an appointment asap but was told by 2 different unknown persons that there were no availability "until after the new year." I remembered how remarkably accurate MAILIE was and requested to speak with her. She said let me see and came back with good news as i had expected she would. This and numerous other correct and worthy help that she has offered via Foothill Eye Institute makes me do my best to see that some praise for her keeps me a member of that medical center because I fully believe that this unassuming person is a great a great credit to FOOTHILL EYE CENTER and I firmly believe that praise should be made to be emulated and shared to always assure patients like myself that MAILIE (sp?) is my THIRD EYE in many aspects that continues to make FOOTHILL EYE INSTITUTE of Pasadena my favorite help to see when I and others may not quite see what MAILE can see and do for me as well as so many other patients and the expert doctors there. read more

One of the worse scheduling arrangements you can ever fine with the "doc wait time." Only their sister company "Eyenez" in GLENDALE can beat Pasadena on wait time. Total office visit was 1 hour and doc exam/consultation was 5 minutes max! I was told they are backed up on scheduling. If you have that all the time then stop over booking patients!!! I saw Dr Pai who was very helpful. But many other staff members interacted with me and they were all extremely professional and competent. My only complaint is that the parking lot serves TWO medical offices and at 9:30 a.m. Friday the 28th of 2017 was FULL UP. I had to search the neighborhood for a spot to park and in the process some "idiot" thought I was too close to his car and pounded on my trunk lid to get my attention -- of course it did not help if he had a girl with him and was trying to prove his manhood, which I already determined was lacking. (I gave him the one-finger salute, to let him know that I did not appreciate his behavior.' Since this was the FIRST TIME I have used Foothill Eye Medical Group in Pasadena I was not expecting to receive the STELLER attention and service that I did. Highly recommended. read more

My mother was referred to Dr. Ho for cataract surgery. After she was prepped and on the table they canceled it saying they didn't have the instruments for the surgery and sent her home. They didn't give us any instructions for after care. The stress of prepping for the operation and the fact that they canceled it, coupled with the anesthesia effect caused her to fall the next day. This is not right. Additionally, they charged us $1,900 for the operation and have yet to refund us. read more

Just left my appointment here 1hour and 15 minutes after my scheduled appointment. While I waited in waiting room could hear front desk girls loudly having personal discussions. The tech was good. Finally saw the ophthalmologist an hour after my a scheduled time told me my eyes were healthy I needed a tweak on my prescription but would need to schedule a separate appointment to get a rx for new glasses. WTF?!? My other ophthalmologist used to take care of all of this. Why would they check my sight in the beginning if they weren't going to treat me? By the way as I waited for my eyes to dilate a MA called in a rx for a patient right in front of me and several others. Name, date of birth and medication. I overheard the dr talk about another patients diagnosis as well in front of us with their name mentioned. HIPAA violation. My only explanation was a rude "this is how our office works" no thank you! I'd rather pay out of pocket to see my ophthalmologist again. read more

Went in with my 12 year old daughter and saw Dr. Rui Zhang. She was rushing through her exam, not conversing at all. She stated my daughter's right eye is weaker, left has perfect vision and gave us the prescription for glasses. As I was getting the Rx filled at Costco, I was talking to the optician there and explaining my daughter's situation to get her opinion if glasses or contacts would be recommended since only one eye has a deficiency. The optician looked at the Rx and said that is not what is written on the prescription , that the Doctor indicated both eyes are the same and need Rx. Contacted Foothill Eye Care requesting clarification and new Rx if needed. New Rx was provided, glasses picked up. As soon as my daughter put them on, she got dizzy and said her picture is worse with the glasses than with them on. I was told it will take couple of days for her to get adjusted. Couple days went on, and no change. I went to a different Doctor for second opinion and was told that Dr. Zhang was way off!!!!! Instead of +2.5, it should have been -1.0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to Foothill Eye Institute on 2/22/18 and was seen by Doctor Dennis Sugiyama. My eye exam lasted no more than 10 minutes. I then proceeded to go to the optical department to order my contacts, to my surprise I realized that the doctor had taken the same prescription of my previous visit, approximate 3 years ago! I made them aware the Doctor must be making a mistake and provide them with a copy of my 2017 prescription done at another doctor's office. To add insult to injury, Doctor Sugiyama duplicated my 2017 prescription and call it a day. It was obvious that after seeing Doctor Sugiyama gross negligence and lazy behavior I was going to have a second opinion and I was very vocal of my discontent and let them know I would be getting a second opinion and their reimbursement would be fair in which they agreed! Well their promise was not honored and ended up spending out of my own pocket for a second opinion and new lenses. I have made a formal complaint with my vision insurance and California State Board of Optometry. I feel I need to stop Doctor Sugiyama lazy behavior, lack of professionalism and the disregard for the patients who need to visit Foothill Eye Institute. read more

I would never recommend this office not even to my worse enemy, the Pasadena Office is nice and have very nice professional doctors, except a totally rude, disrespectful front desk person with no manners at all, talking to me while drinking coffee and raising her voice all the time, also full of makeup, so unprofessional . I asked for her name and she refused to tell me. I found out her name is Melissa. I asked for the manager and she responded "I am the manager" which I doubted. I decided to leave and never come back. Foothill Eye Institute has been a 2nd home to me. Due to my eye condition I frequent this location sometimes 2-3 times a week depending on where Dr. Jessica Wong is scheduled. Dr. Wong is very professional, knowledgeable, friendly, courteous, and kind. I am confident in her abilities and would recommend her without hesitation. The office staff are exceptional individuals who always welcome me with a smile and a warm reception and well wishes. Monica, Veronica, and Sonya are wonderful and are always there to assist at the front desk. I always look forward to seeing them on my visits. Stephanie, and Leo are GREAT technicians. They go ABOVE and BEYOND always making me feel comfortable and at ease during my visits. I wish all Medical Offices were as wonderful as Foothill Eye Institute.
