I was directed to Dr. Wei from another optometrist because I had an eyelid condition where the lashes on the bottom eyelids grew inwards rather than outwards. BIG MISTAKE coming here. We set up an appointment to get the procedure done. I was awake the entire time, but not drugged up enough. In the middle of the procedure, the drug wore off, I of course told them I feel pain and they decided to numb my eyes. It isn't fun seeing knives coming at you. I been coming to Dr. Wei for about 5 years and is still dissatisfied with the way they run their business. The staff here is rude and very unprofessional. When I had my stitches, they demanded that I take a pressure test for my eyes. HELLLO, my eyes were swollen from the surgery. Buying contacts from them is a pain. They charge you an inconsistent "fitting fee" that ranges from $25-$40. When I asked for a copy of my prescription, they refused too give it to me until I paid that fee. Then an older lady (the wife) kept trying to convince me to buy contacts from them. I got annoyed of them hassling me so I purchased the contacts from them. However, I still never got a copy of my prescription. The reason why I stayed with Dr. Wei was because of my condition. When I got the procedure done, years later -- I noticed I had to get it done again because it was done incorrectly. When I went back and mentioned it to Dr. Wei, his response, "Just wear contacts and it won't bother you". Does it look like I want to wear contacts my entire life?! No. I had to go to a specialist to get my procedure done again. I ended up paying thousands of dollars to get it professionally done due to this mistake. By the way, when I ordered my contacts, they didn't even have it in stock. I would not recommend coming here, it was a waste of my time.

My eyes were so bad I couldn't drive anymore and there were no glasses that would help. My right eye I couldn't even see the biggest letter. I had surgery on one day to remove cataracts and the next day, my eye was 20/20. I could see the smallest letter on the chart!!!! I have one eye to go, I can't wait! They are the best of the best! I had heard good things about Dr. Lai through online searches, so I was hoping to confirm what insurance they accept and how to use my medical insurance for an eye exam. Unfortunately, the experience fell short right from the start. The person who answered the phone, Sam, was impatient, unfriendly, and noticeably rude when I asked basic questions. Instead of helping guide me through the process, as any medical office should, especially for new patients--she sounded irritated and dismissive. It honestly doesn't matter how good a doctor may be if the first point of contact treats people this way. A front desk representative sets the tone for the entire practice, and this interaction was a complete disservice to Dr. Lai and to potential patients like myself. I ended the call feeling unwelcome and unsure if I should even schedule an appointment. Customer service matters, especially in healthcare. Sadly, this was not a good first impression.

However, the receptionists have the worst attitude ever. During my mom's appointment, which was scheduled for 8:30am, we were not informed that she needed to do dilation and an OCT scan, despite scheduling the appointment 3 months in advance. Even when they called to confirm the appointment the day before, they did not mention it. When we arrived at 8:15am, my mom was taken in right away for a blood pressure and eyesight check. The person who helped her (I am not sure if she is licensed personnel) informed us that my mom needed to do dilation and scanning. When I explained that no one had informed us about this and I had other appointments to attend after this one, she responded with an attitude, asking why we were even there in the first place. She continued to blame us for coming too early and made excuses for the doctor not being available. Despite my silence, she continued to talk nonstop. In the end, she suggested a so-called "solution", stating that they would still do the dilation and scanning, and we could leave if we wanted to and the doctor wouldn't see us. This made no sense since we had come to see the doctor in the first place.

Whether this doctor is the best in town is unknown but this place does take all type of insurance, including medi-cal, so there are a lot, a lot of seniors here. One good thing about this place is that they have a full staff who speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English. They provide specific instructions and will also call you in advance to confirm your appointment. Although my dad's cataract surgery was a success, I'm giving it a 3 because of the location of the facility, cleanliness and service. Located inside an old, dirty building where the elevator lights are broken. Thankfully, the elevator works because a good majority, if not all, of their patients are seniors and/or handicapped. Could you imagine if the elevator doesn't work?!? The main reason for the low score is that the wait is super, duper long. They ask you to come back the next day for a follow-up but then you can't make an appointment, which sucks because the walk-in takes FOREVER. Even on a weekday! When asked how long it would take, the staffs wouldn't answer, because hey, they don't want to be honest with you. The honest answer is that it could take HOURS. Ridiculous. Seating situation sucks also. Limited seating so people were waiting standing up for a real long time. Sigh. If you're looking for a Chinese cataract surgeon for your parents, then you're limited and may end up coming here. I went home and felt the edge of a disk again. I went back to show him and he did another examination. Still he said there was no contact. I said okay, but what was it? It is still not normal to feel an edge of a disk over my eyeball. The doctor snapped off and yelled "I told you there is no contact! I told you ten times! What do you want me to tell you?" I said: "Doctor, you have to calm down! I know there is no contact, but I was asking what it was!" He said, " that was your hallucination!" OMG, I took off. Got seen by an optometrist later He diagnosed me with inflammation from allergy. I have swelling from the inflammation underneath eye membrane and that was what felt like a contact.

I visited 2 other clinics in LA, one that was quite famous, and one that was a bit more modest. From the first one, I was wary of the extremely profit/business-driven mentality of both the surgeon and all his staff (that's just how they came across in my opinion), and while the latter was nice, they seemed a bit less top-notch in skill (they seemed experienced enough with Lasik, but less so with ICLs). I got so tired of overthinking the whole thing that I took a break from searching and considered sticking with contacts/glasses. Then, one day my mindset shifted to be less overwhelmed by the idea, and I searched online and happened to stumble upon IQ as being a place that was reviewed to be good to their patients and good with communicating, etc. And from my first visit onwards, I can confirm this is true. I was struck with how they had the best of the two other clinics I mentioned: the first one's expertise and the heart of the second. The whole team at IQ is very professional, yet also very humane, and they were never pushy with me. They finally helped me feel ready to go for it, and not by manipulating me, but simply by being open and ready to answer any questions I had in a very neutral and fair way. I also have to give a shoutout to Danielle, the consultant/counselor (she's like a liason to help explain the overall procedure+cost to you before you speak with the surgeon) - she's genuinely great. I'm now 5 months into living with ICLs - the actual surgery site healed early on - and I can actually say it was worth it. It's admittedly a pretty expensive procedure in general, but I have to say, if you can do it - it's so comfortable and convenient, and I am so grateful that the team was so meticulously careful with their measurements and that it all went well. Our eyes are such a crucial part of the body that I really feared the worst case scenario with mismanagement, but IQ did great. I waited to review bc I wanted to make sure my results were stable. I will update if anything changes, but so far, very good. On seeing haloes - for me specifically, I have truly a lot less of this effect than I anticipated; it really depends on the angle and is pretty negligible for me and my lifestyle needs. Most of the time, I don't have any ! (Maybe it could vary depending on different eyes, though - don't know.) Before, I was overall very cautious about whether ICLs were a good/worthwhile thing to do, but now being on the other side, I'm converted ! I think it has advanced enough to where a good surgeon (IQ has more than one on staff, btw - I had Dr. Patrick) and clinic can do a great job, because that's what I received ! Currently 2 weeks post lasik and my vision is SO MUCH BETTER. I had Danielle as my lasik rep and she made everything understandable and answered our questions w/great explanations. Theres even options to pay via payment plans if you're worried about the cost. Originally I wanted to come in for my consult due to my farsightedness and high astigmatism but my dad also ended up joining me last minute LOL and the team at SM location tried their best to accommodate him despite their busy schedule - MEGA THANKS! With some back and forth testing to see whether we qualified for the procedure, we did have to visit the City of Industry location a couple of times since they had a specific machine for dilation that the SM location did not have. In the end I ended up having my surgery there and it was a breeze! I also saw both Dr. Grace and Dr. Nguyen as my optometrists - both amazing and honest drs. Literally told me as it is, and reassured me that post surgery, it would take awhile for me to readjust due to my past prescription. SURGERY DAY; went in, got retested to be sure, got to meet my surgeon & the assistants- Dr. Lin- super nice man), just a bit of loud machinery noise and burning smell but both eyes were zapped and done within 20 minutes. I was able to literally open my eyes post procedure, although blurry, but with no issues. Got my handy clear eye covers and had my eyes closed for the rest of day. You WILL have a high sensitivity to light so make sure you have your sunglasses to wear and eye drops! Thank you to the amazing team at IQ!
