Unfortunately, we didn't have a great experience with Foon's. We are visiting for the week and wanted Chinese and they had great reviews... The beef and broccoli sauce was soupy, the chicken and cashews was lacking cashews, the fortune cookies were completely stale, the crab Rangoon was super fishy, and they forgot to give us our steamed white rice for 5 entrees. They did come back and deliver the rice when we called, but we had pretty much finished eating our entrees sans rice by the time it arrived. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be ordering from them next year. read more

I have ordered from Foon's for a few years and it has always been good. They must have a new chef because it is now outstanding. I ordered Chicken Chow Mein and Kung Pao. There were large chunks of chicken in my chicken chow mein, the vegetables in both dishes were fresh, the peanuts in the Kung Pao were crunchy and the sauces were great! It tasted like they had created the dishes on the spot, just for my order. I will be going there again soon! read more

I have a little story about FOON'S history I'll save for the end of the review, for those interested to read it....but for now, I'll review the current Foon's takeout. We were GIANT, devoted fans of Foon's when it was a big dine-in casual restaurant long ago, so we finally decided to try their new incarnation of the smaller take-out shop. I am happy to say their food is still a cut above. Something about their sauces have more complexity and depth. The ginger flavors come out more in their dishes than other places. We've tried many of their menu items, too many to mention here, so suffice it to say, we are well pleased and happy with everything we get at Foons. Its all just a cut above the other Chinese take-outs. Ok, for those who don't know it, Foon's used to be a large, casual dine-in restaurant on Shore Drive in the 90's and earlier 2000's. I don't know when they opened as Foons where, but when I was a child in the 70s and 80s, it was a different restaurant some locals may recall. It had the mast of a ship jutting out in front into the parking lot and it was called 'Quarterdeck'. When Foon's moved into that building, they removed the ship front, but kept the maritime and ship decor and portholes on the inside. Around 1996, I started taking my mother to Foon's on dates there and she started taking her sisters and friends. Foon's became a special place for us...our preferred place for special occasions and treats. A comfort spot. We had a huge party there before my first trip abroad which is very memorable. We had another big get-together at Foons for my engagement party. It was a very memorable time when I took my new wife there for the first time. Foons, for us, was that one...almost magical place you go to, where everything in the world was made right for 2 hours, where you for transported to a land of good food, friends, family for awhile before returning to the real world. Thats what Foons became for us. We were saddened when we heard they were closing and a Hooka Bar was taking its place. But life goes that way sometimes and eventually we heard Foons would live on down the same road a bit, as a take-out establishment. But it was REALLY SAD for me when we saw the hookah bar building had a fire and nearly burned down. Half of it did burn down. The old Foon's and Quarterdeck building, with so many memories, was basically gone.......After a few years, the building was repaired and rebuilt, but I don't think a business has moved it yet. read more

I tend to look for places to go based on the number of stars an establishment has on Yelp. Well, this one time Yelp reviewers let me down. This place is 1. Hard to find 2. The food is barely ok. I drove out of my way to go here after work just to find a new place to eat, sorry I did. The food was, edible but not great. The general tsos sauce was awkwardly sweet. Decided to try it since the reviews said the orange chicken was great. And it was! It didn't have the heavy fried batter on it and I love extra sauce to put over my rice. And the best part. It was in a bag so there wasn't a mess in the plastic bag or my car. The lo mein was yummy and I could eat more then one of those egg rolls. It wasn't too pricey for the dinner combo. I've never been disappointed and considering the fact I've ordered from Foon's frequently and more than anywhere in my life, that may zum it up. I dont have any photos for this review so I'm going to make it short (that seemed logical before I typed it out). I was hanging with a friend and he ordered here, I wasnt in the mood for chinese so I passed when the order was made. We went and pickd up the food and darn it, if all that moving around didnt get my hunger going! i tried a couple bites of my friends general tsos ANDDDD hands down the most delcious general tsos ive ever had. he credited the amazing taste to the fact that there is a black woman cook in their kitchen & i mean i have to admit it really tasted like asian/soul food fusion. man, soo good! Fast foward a couple hours, im really hungry now and about to head back to the peninsula. I drop by foons to have the full size general tsos and would you know, it tasted like regular, degular, schmegular general tsos. i was sooo dissapointed LOL. so i guess we know who only works days,HA! oh well, ill go back but only for lunch. read more

I don't know why we keep ordering from here, probably because it's so close. I rate it 3 stars overall, I usually don't reorder from 3 star joints but I keep hoping. Pros: it's always been on time for us and, when delivered, is hot; wonton soup is decent, so are the egg rolls; with the soup they automatically give you soup crackers (whatever the Chinese restaurant ones are called) and ample duck/soy sauces; portions are HUGE (dinner meals that is)! Cons: there's one MASSIVE con...this place is so damn inconsistent! I always get garlic chicken with cashews. The 1st time was god awful because it was so bland I questioned if it was anything except boiled chicken in water with soggy veggies (you'd think I'd learn my lesson and wouldn't order again haha). 2nd time was a bit better but still fairly bland, I think they gave me chicken and cashews rather than garlic chicken with cashews. 3rd time was spectacular! Best Chinese food I can recall. 4th time, really bad again. 5th time (currently), I feel like I'm eating lightly flavored sweet and sour chicken with cashews, I'm so confused. I just moved to the Shore Drive area of Virginia Beach & was looking for some food. I saw Foons driving past the other day, but it was Yelp's reviews that made me try the place. I called to place a delivery order and it was delivered to my apartment very quickly. The food was Hot, Fresh & very very great. I had the General Tso's Chicken and it was delicious! My ONLY complaint is that they don't have a website to place online deliveries. (also, I forgot to mention their Yelp special to get $2 off :( ) But I shall definitely be a returning customer. I work right across the street from Foon's and I always come into work after they've closed. Tonight I had to come in early and work a double shift and needed some food for my dinner. I called Foon's a half hour before closing and in 10minutes they were here. I was completely ecstatic about the fast delivery. However, when I opened up my bag and looked at my food. I was horrified. :( I ordered boneless spare ribs, fried rice and crab rangoons. I thoroughly enjoy this particular meal and order it at almost every chinese restaurant I eat at. This was my first time ordering or eating from Foon's and I don't think I'd ever do it again. The fried rice looked as if it was sitting out all day (maybe why it was so fast to deliver). The crag rangoons...every where else is around $4-$5 for 8 to 10 pieces...nearly same price at Foon's and only had 4 pieces. The boneless spare ribs weren't cut up like normal and instead was given 4 pieces of long cuts of meat. For nearly $15 of food including tip I was not pleased with the amount nor the actual meal. EVERY TIME I order chinese I always have left overs as they just give you too much and I love it because I can have it for later. I don't even think I will even be full from the serving they produced. I don't recommend them...or maybe just don't go when they're about to close. So disappointed. I will never order or go to Foon's again...it was a waste of money. read more

Wow, this is not only delicious but it also won't hurt your wallet. I didn't find a menu on-line so I ordered when I got there. I wanted a dinner special of shrimp with Chinese vegetables but it wasn't one of their specials.....so he made it for me anyways. No problem. I didn't have to wait long before he brought my to-go order with soy/duck/Chinese mustard and fortune cookie all wrapped up in a bag. No chop sticks though, I'm glad I have my own at home. This is food made with care. The inside of the egg roll had COLOR in it. Not the white cabbage with mystery brown stuff like most other places. See pic....what a delight. The pork fried rice had PORK in it, no kidding and pieces of scrambles EGG....we eat with our eyes first and my eyes were ravenous for this food. It was delicious. The shrimp was plentiful, cooked perfectly and a very nice size...see pic.. And, my fortune cookie said, "Serious trouble will bypass you" so glad I went there. Drive the few extra minutes as I did and support quality food. There is also a YELP discount when you check in. $2.00 off a $15.00 purchase. My purchase...$8.80, couldn't use it. My daughter was in the hospital for a few weeks, and when we first came home neither my husband nor I had the energy to grocery shop or cook meals. Pizza got old quickly and we looked for some Chinese in the area. We have been disappointed with other places but decided to give Foons a shot after getting lots of recommendations from friends. I'm so glad we tried it! I called in an order and had my husband pick it up. The gentleman I spoke to on the phone was very friendly. We ordered egg rolls, a sweet and sour shrimp dinner combo with wonton soup, and General tso's chicken with fried rice. I absolutely LOVE spice so I asked for my chicken to be extra spicy and I was not disappointed. It had a great bit of heat but not so hot that your mouth was on fire. The chicken was cooked perfectly, not smothered in breaking, and the broccoli was tender. The fried rice was some of the best I've ever had. Most carry out fried rice is dry and yucky, but this was delicious. It had onions and bean sprouts but none of the extra carrots and peas to muck it all up. If you like it that way, it'll be absolutely delicious. The egg rolls were moist and flavorful. My husband's wonton soup was delicious. And he enjoyed his shrimp. Definitely will make Foons our go to spot for Chinese! read more

Foon's is a shining star in the constellation of mediocre Chinese restaurants in South Hampton Roads. There certainly are some excellent white tablecloth Chinese -- Forbidden City, Imperial Palace -- and there is an endless string of forgettable buffets. What is missing is the casual, yet well prepared option. Foon's comes close to perfection. What sets Foon's apart is the solid flavors of the sauces. Most locally have some indistinguishable brown sauce on everything -- Hunan, Mandarin, Cantonese -- doesn't matter. Foon's Kung Po dishes have the sharp edge they are supposed to, while the Lemon Chicken has the unmistakable taste of fresh lemon juice. Attention to detail, and a dedication to excellence are what sets Foon's apart from the crowd. Now, for the "comes close". Foon's is a take out place, primarily. There are two tables in the front -- first come, first served. Service is quick, so the tables are quickly turned. Man, if they had a dining room, I'd be an addict. After reading all the great reviews my boyfriend & I ventured two minutes up the road to Foon's and it didn't disappoint! Staff is very friendly, prices are great, & the food comes out fast and hot! Chinese is my go to comfort food when I'm feeling under the weather and their shrimp pancit and hot & sour soup was just what I needed during these cold, winter nights. Their egg rolls are yummy too! We have been here for take out a few times. I can't believe I haven't written a review. We live a few miles away and stop in here after a weeknight walk and swim in the bay. Everything we have eaten here, has been a fair price and tastes good. Not too greasy like some places. They are very fast. So fast, I just walk in and order instead of calling first. Didn't have a great meal there. I ordered the Twin Imperial. Filet mignon and shrimp. Steak was tough and only 3 small chunks. Shrimp was great and basically bland Chinese vegetables great for a Kidney diet ie low salt. I ordered brown rice and got white.. oh well wasn't going to ride back up there..All in all I would recommend a simple dish there. Based on the rave reviews here, we decided to give Foon's a try this evening. We ordered the Chicken Mei Fun and the General Tao's Chicken and tried the Wonton Soup, white rice, and fried rice. The menu promises "100% white meat chicken" and they delivered on this promise. The Wonton Soup was very good and the chicken in both dishes was tender and fresh. The spice in the General Tao's was quite good - better than any we've tried to date. Hands down, this was the best take-out Chinese we've ever had and we look forward to ordering again! read more

So first off I love the food here, it's probably my favorite place to get sesame chicken. But the reason I'm leaving a review is for the recent random service I got. I have ordered from here before and got it delivered. But this past friday 11/16 I called like normal to order my food to be delivered per normal. As I'm finishing my order the woman says the "driver" would like to ask again where I live. I tell him and he says they dont deliver here it's to far I must have called the wrong place. I politely informed him I have had them deliver before but he didnt seem to want to hear it and hung up. I think he just didnt want to drive out to where I live which is only 10min if that down the road. Any other time I've ordered it's been a younger man who answered and delivered my order. We where bummed cause we work all day and didnt want to have to drive back out and had wanted out favorite Chinese place. I dont know if I want to order from here again now due to such rudeness and flip flop decisions on when they want to deliver somewhere. read more

I went here going off of the positive reviews but was very disappointed with this place. The chicken and broccoli was the worst I've ever had. In my experience the chicken and broccoli usually comes in a brown sauce but this chicken looked like it was just boiler and both the chicken and broccoli has a weird clear/opaque slime or glaze on them. The orange chicken nor the spring rolls were any good. Threw it all away. The only part that tasted good was the wonton soup. Will no be returning. read more
