Ordered for pickup again. Hubby went inside to pick it up. We parked around back this time and there's a whole huge parking lot back there!!! I never knew that. That's amazing. Hubby got his usual - Shanghai wonton soup, an egg roll, and Szechuan beef. He loved everything and ate it all, as usual. I got a small hot and sour soup and the eggplant with black bean sauce and I added fried tofu. Of course I couldn't finish everything, but it was all amazing. Adding the fried tofu doubled the size of my dish, so they gave me another takeout container of eggplant and tofu. That was nice of them. We also got a container of rice to share. Wow! Ok, first, the restaurant is clean and the decor is fun. This is our second time eating here. Yes, there are robots (totally running food, but not 100% automated - the servers run up and make sure you each diner gets what they ordered). The robots are cute, but let's talk about the food! The menu is HUGE, which to me means it may not be that great. And yet it was! Yes, I have pics of lots of food, but I want to talk about mine. I ordered Pho! Lately, I have been craving good Asian cuisine, where I could sit down and enjoy the meal. After a few Google searches, I found Forbidden Palace, so I thought I would given them a try before heading to a local theater production. I called and made a reservation for 6 pm on a Saturday night. Once there, I was greeted quickly and seated at my table. I was impressed by the decor and the delicious smells coming from the kitchen. My human server was quick to take my drink order, iced tea, and gave me plenty of time to peruse the menu, which featured both Chinese and Japanese dishes. For an appetizer, I had a delectable cucumber salad. I opted for the black pepper steak served with white rice as my entree. Neither disappointed! The portions are large and reasonably priced. The service from Stu, my robotic waiter, and my human server were excellent, as well. Overall, a splendid dining experience! I will be returning again to try some of the other offerings. read more

I have heard all good things about this restaurant and I FINALLY made it. Sadly, it was Easter Sunday but I was just happy they were open. It's in a strip mall near Harris Teeter. Very large inside with booths and tables that have the lazy susan. Love that. The bar is a very good size and the bathrooms were clean. They have lunch specials and Happy Hour!! Love that so much! The service was very friendly. We had water and they give a few free crunchy type noodles. I had the Dan Dan noodles under the Taiwanese style. Ramen noodles with a Peanut Sauce. It was spicy!!!! My fault because I told them I wasn't scared. I should have asked for less spicy but I did drink about 1/2 my water intake for the day. I did like the flavor though. The best part of this place is there is literally something for everyone. Sushi, Dim Sum, American Chinese, Cantonese and Vegetarian just to name a few. I definitely will be back and want to check out the HH which includes $3.50 wine and beer and appetizers. Oh....and they have the robots that bring your food to you. So fun. Had really high hopes because we are always looking for a great place that has both Chinese food and sushi. This is super common where we are from and always miss it. We ordered an array of both cuisines and sadly there were only a few things that ended up being great. For appetizers, we shared the crab rangoons and the shrimp spring rolls. Both were decent, but the crab rangoons had an incredibly thin wrapper, which just isn't the norm of what we are used to. Although the filling was good, this wrapper just threw off the ratio. We also got hot and sour soup to start which was lacking flavor. Sushi was mediocre. see both got one roll, a shrimp tempura and a spicy tuna. Spicy tuna had no spice and just didn't seem to have that fresh fish flavor. The shrimp tempura was a bit better, but still not amazing. Kani salad also weirdly tasted a bit fishy. For entrees, we got chicken fried rice and house egg foo young which were the two things that we would actually come back for. Both were served piping hot and had lots of flavor. This is the worst and most over priced Chinese food I've ever had! I placed an order for pick up over the phone, and the guy who took my order was snarky. When I went to pick up my order, the restaurant had a nice and seemingly welcome atmosphere. I was greeted upon entering and directed to the bar to pay and pick my food. I stood at the bar for a few minutes before anyone said anything to me...I didn't like that and almost left considering there were at least 3 people there. Not a "Hello", "We'll be right with you" or anything. When someone finally said something, it was a guy throwing cooked rice in a container...the same thing he was doing when I first walked up. I paid for my food and left, thinking my bag definitely felt light. In a rush, I left without question it. When I finally opened my bag, I was highly disappointed. I paid $50 for 3 spring rolls, a small order of shrimp fried rice, 3 chicken wings, and an order of beef and broccoli with shrimp. The 4 medium shrimp that came with my beef and broccoli were an additional $3...they were soggy and gross! The shrimp fried rice, which they charged me $6.50 for as a substitute for the white rice that I ordered with the beef and broccoli, was also gross. My daughter, who loves chicken wigs, did not make it past one! The beef and broccoli was ok, outside of the soggy added shrimp and missing white rice. I want to like this place but the food is hit or miss. The experience is always weird and I don't mean just because of the robot food delivery. The waitstaff makes you very uncomfortable from the moment the person/robot (no difference personality wise) up front takes you to your seat. Twice they've made our food wrong and the waitstaff takes it to the kitchen and returns it saying it's right. Last time this happened there was definitely no miscommunication because I was served the last thing I'd ever order on the menu, theirs or any other. Anyway we've had to give it up, I hate to leave unhappy after an $80 meal. No problem if it's good but with their track record, the odds aren't very high that you will be satisfied here. read more

What was intriguing about the place was that they had variety on their menu. Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese, Cantonese etc... Upon walking in, we were greeted and seated quickly. Our server was very attentive to us as well. For appetizer I got the Crab Rangoon and ordered some sushi, Volcano Roll and Yummy Roll. Everything was delicious! To be 100% honest it is the worst sushi I have ever had. We ordered the hurricane roll, golden dragon roll and filet mignon roll. The filet mignon roll was nowhere near the quality of a filet as advertised. It was cold, chewy, not an appetizing flavor and seemed more like a bad piece of beef jerky on top of a roll. While chewing I almost gagged on the taste. The golden dragon roll did not have a good flavor as well. The shrimp was cold as ice and was not pleasant as well. The hurricane roll had wasabi on it as we asked for no wasabi. We asked for the manager to talk to him about the food and it appeared our experience was not taken well by him. He walked away and we did not hear anything from him for quite a few minutes. The waiter was pleasant and asked if e would like something else as a replacement but we had both lost our appetite. We asked for our bill and nothing was done on their end to make up for it. We have eaten at plenty of sushi restaurants before and know what to order and what we like. The quality of the food does not appear very well and we would be afraid of eating anything else there. This is the first time in my life that I could not eat the meal that was put in front of me. Would highly recommend staying away from here and visiting many of the other sushi restaurants in the area. I would give no stars if that was an option. read more

We have had some good meals here, but last night I ordered the Ginger Shrimp, and what arrived was totally inedible. The shrimp were batter-fried in a gummy, tasteless paste that no one at my table thought was properly cooked. I told our server that the dish was terrible and I didn't want it, but he appeared not to understand and gave me a take-away box. He still didn't get it when I ordered another dish, and we were billed for everything. This is inferior service, and the kitchen needs to know that they should either cook that dish properly or take it off the menu. Forbidden Palace is a lost memory. From a once pleasant dining experience, forbidden palace has transformed into a unparalleled experience of poop. Looking past the glossy space murals covering every flat space and beyond the traditional 'gen z' ironic jazz, you just dodge these really stupid 'service' robots to reach booths. NOW the adventure beguns begins. Overy seasoned spare ribs should be more accurately titled 'five spice powder with shadow of spare ribs'. Cucumber salad is spot on: a cucumber with mirin, oil and sesame seeds. Passable. Bao are the exact same packaging as found across the street in kroger. Prefab, frozen bao for the cost of an arm and a leg. Peking Duck - isn't. Its poorly roasted duck presented in bony chunks rather than the civilized paper-thin duck of REAL Chinese restaurants ( 3 miles from this place is a true Chinese Peking duck restaurant). Granted, the staff's English is better than my Cantonese, but their failure to grasp essential English terms ( like 'take away boxes) is oddly prevalent. After 'accidentally' clearing the table and throwing away the half of our meals, the staff lost all English capability and rather than reducing the bill to cover what the restaurant staff had discarded, merely shrugged their shoulders. All the while, the dumb@$$ robots are squiggling around singing whistling and bumping into patron and tables, making things generally chaotic. Ten years ago this place was okay. Tried it THREE times in the past two months. Never again. 1 star only because you can't give zero. read more

Family decided to ring in the New Year here. Everyone was so friendly from the moment we walked in. The menu is extensive. Something for everyone! We had Plum Wine, Pot Stickers and Crab Rangoon to start. We then shared Orange Chicken, Triple Crown, Pad Thai and Beef with Garlic Sauce. Everything was delicious. When you walk into Forbidden Palace you are instantly in a space that is filled with super cool decor and murals on the wall. You also spot the robot server going around. In my case, the robot was singing "Happy Birthday" to the table behind me. Seating is plentiful, servers were so nice and understanding. I ordered sushi, Mongolian beef, gyoza, and Singapore noodles. All of my food was delicious. I have to say my favorite was the Mongolian beef dish. I just loved loved the well marinated beef and veggies were perfectly done. My friend ordered hand sushi which was something I have never seen or tried. It looked tasty ! Parking was ample, shopping center is popular but there's lots of space. Wow I must have hit a bad day or the people giving this restaurant five star have never eaten real or fresh Chinese food. The DinSum was frozen and steamed until the wrapper melted in to goo and the stuffing was way overcooked so much so I almost could not cut it in half with my knife. Next, the Lumpia was way overcooked to the point when I bit into it I pulled the rest of the stuffing out like a burnt linked sausage. When I told our waiter the food was way overcooked and bad and wanted to re do our order He told us that the chef said that is the way lumpia is suppose to be. I told him we have had Lumpia many places and this was way overcooked. The waiter then told us they had already started cooking our entrees so we would have to pay for the entire meal. We asked for the manager and complained about the Lumpia and the din sum and he said he would remove the Lumpia from our bill then we received our bill only to find the Lumpia was still on the check. They finally removed it from the bill but we still had to pay for the rest of the meal. I have eaten at hundreds of Chinese restaurants and this was the worse one. How did I never leave a review for Forbidden Palace?! This is my go-to sit-down Chinese restaurant! They have a great mix of genuine recipies and american-chinese ones. They also have a sushi bar and a FULL bar. It's a little out of my way on VB Blvd just past Rosemont in the shopping center with Sam's Club. I've had so many great dishes here! They have big servings, made to be shared with family. They are always tasty and cooked with quality ingredients. I enjoy the giant, white-meat nuggets in the orange chicken as well as the lo mein. Today I tried the Schezchuan veggies and added chicken. Damn, it was wonderful! The veg were all perfect and the sauce was bit spicy and had a stellar taste! My favorite appetizer is the salt and pepper shrimp, it's tempura shrimp with some salty seasoning and a mixture of sliced jalapenos, scallions, and fried garlic. Even the egg-drop soup is good! How much difference from a fast food place can you get?! A lot! Staff is usually great! It gets busy on some nights, it's worth the wait.
