Opening week jitters!? I think (hope) so. I'll preface this by saying that I have been to at least 6 different locations of Fogo and maybe 15 visits. I've only had one not great experience, and that was in LA where every premium dining experience is a gamble.
The place is great looking. Valet is cheaper than parking in most lots.
Thiago welcomed us for our bday dinner and we arrived at our table. Our server was pleasant but also, way too much script and up sell conversation. It took about 10 mins before we could get through it all! Finally got wine at about the 15 min mark, and then another 10 mins until we were able to order a round of full churrasco experiences for the table.
The salad bar was wonderful, but lacked protein options for salads...A- score: Prosciutto, veggies, dressings, all delicious. Variety was above average. Quality excellent. They need to have smaller ramekins for the sauces available to grab. Farofa and feijoada were solid, but very little sausage. Try the hot sauce with... delish. Don't overlook the candied bacon hiding either!
The meats...C score: The meats did not all meat our expectation. Every skewer to be sliced that was brought to our table, looked like a miniature version of the expected rodizio. I am not sure if this was the butchering, the cut of meat from the source, or a demand planning failure. The fraldinha was the best, followed by the picanha. The chicken and sausage were lackluster. The lamb options were okay. The other cuts were just either overcooked, undercooked, or not our style. No seafood options like shrimpies. Normally, salt would come into mix, but we never experienced any over-salted cuts except for the bacon-wrapped options, the sausage, and the chicken. Kudos for not over-seasoning.
Sauces... A score: Chimichurri and other sauces were requested for the table and we got the smallest portions that I've ever received for a meat and steak experience. Make sure to order extra.
Overall, we found what we liked, but the skewered meat pandered by the gauchos, just wasn't up to expectation.
Now for the best part, dessert...A score: The Cheesecake brulee is the way to go. Sweet, light, airy, with charred sugar on all sides, not just the top. The menu options for dessert are a little lackluster overall, so we were happy with this winner! This is a perfect post-show dessert when in uptown, or as a delicious treat. Omg.
Service...C score for the table, D score for the gauchos: Well, this is where I will chalk the entire experience up to new restaurant opening. Lots of people working, not great definition of their roles or trying too hard to do too much. You could see the wheels turning in their eyes! The lack of experience on the gaucho side was apparent. We were skipped over numerous times despite showing green. The cutting of the meat was awkward for the many newbies doing the cutting. The cuts weren't pro yet. It also took a few mins between server visits. While delightful when they did happen, you could tell this is all new to them.
Our meal took right at 2 hours. With improvements to the above, we could have shaved 30 mins off that.
In review, I'd give it some time until the kinks are worked out. Until then, I will definitely be heading to the bar for that awesome bites menu. read more
