Vegan paradise ... soooo good! Seriously, some of the best vegan food we have ever had. Grits that are incredible and man n cheese that makes you want more. We thought this looked like a cool place to have a vegetarian and vegan dinner. It's very tiny but we were drawn to the menu and quaintness on this side street. In addition, they have an outdoor seating area that would accommodate our fur family. However, unlike the majority of shops, restaurants, and other establishments in this Mendocino dog friendly town, Fog Eater Cafe is not! Not only would they deny our beloved Frenchie, the hostess's response was down right rude and shocking. If you have a doggie don't even bother with them. We have many Facebook and Instagram friends, as well as personal friends who visit here often. We are posting and passing this on to all and hope you pass it on to yours as well. Today I went in and ordered food to go. The waitress then came back with the bill and said that they add on 20% tip to all orders, even take out. First, I was shocked and said "that's a lot of money to me" . She responded "it is to me too and we have to earn a living wage". I was also thinking about if I could spend an extra $3.40 on something that I didn't really need but wanted to experience. While I was thinking about it she said " I can have the kitchen cancel the order if you'd like". So I walked out. Honestly, I was appalled by it all. Firstly, the markup on the food they sell is over 50% so look to the owners who hire them to give them a living wage plus the tips they already get from people who dine in and not try to gouge money from everyone. I could totally understand if they request that people tip for takeout, but to demand it is rude. Instead of giving me time to process what she said, she came back with canceling the order, and that rudeness put me over the edge. No kindness or thoughtfulness from her at all..... she saw I was struggling with what to do. Times are hard now for many people, and I already had to convince myself that I could treat myself even though it's not cheap. So, to the waitress who I spoke to today: I hope for your sake that people are kinder to you then you were to me especially when you're down and trying to fight your way back up. After reading other reviews, I knew I had to try that Cajun Mac, so we headed to Fog Eater. We called ahead for pickup and when we arrived (20 min after the kitchen opened for the evening) the patio seating was already full with happy folks. A woman in a mask greeted us within a minute of arriving outside Fogeater, grabbed our food, and we payed and left. Super easy and pleasant transaction. We ordered the green tomato biscuit sliders, Cajun Mac, hush puppies, and deviled eggs. I was surprised because I loved all of it and just liked the Mac n cheese. To be fair we arrived a few minutes after our pickup time and I wonder if eating the Mac warm rather than cooled off would have been better? The seasoning was great, but it was just okay to me. However, my mind was totally blown by the fried green tomato biscuit with slaw. The colors, textures, and flavors were on point. Hush puppies were flavorful with green chilies (I believe) in the batter. Serious perfection served over a delicious aioli. The deviled eggs were visually my favorite item and tasted wonderful. Suffice it to say we can't wait to come back. Between the ease of ordering, friendly service, and excellent food, visiting Fogeater will be a staple of our visits to the coast. My family and I have been spending holidays in Mendocino since the 80's and as a long-time vegan I was excited to experience Fog Eater, but sadly we will not be returning because of the curt and unfriendly red-haired waitress wearing glasses who made our experience unpleasant. First impressions are lasting. After entering the restaurant and standing in the doorway with our party of 5, she turned to us from another table in an exhausted, annoyed manner and said we could sit at the table by the door as soon as she cleaned it. Her unpleasant "greeting" made us want to walk out, but after a 8 hr drive from LA for 2 of us, and a 3.5 hour drive from Berkeley for the other 3, we were tired and hungry and had been looking forward to finally eating at Fog Eater so we stayed. We waited patiently, standing in the doorway, for some time until other patrons walked in and a few more walked out and we were awkwardly blocking the entrance/exit, so we decided to sit down at the table she told us she would clean and made sure to keep space between us and the table so it could be cleaned properly. After 10 min, when the waitress came to the table, we immediately apologized for sitting and offered to stand back up, explaining that we didn't want to block the entrance/exit to which she replied in a condescending and rude tone "I told you to wait until I cleaned the table". I made eye contact with my shy 16 year old niece looked uncomfortable and we all exchanged looks after her scolding tone. When we asked for her suggestions on the menu, she gave us short answers and was so visibly annoyed with us. She completely lacked any air of hospitality and while I can understand being tired, especially in the restaurant/hospitality industry and not having a good day (she clearly was not), she was going out of her way to be cold and rude. Later, a dark-haired woman brought us our drinks and she was friendly and warm. The complete opposite of the other woman. The food was good. Not great, but good. I hope they take this woman off the floor and perhaps keep her back-of-house where she can express her frustrations away from guests. read more

The food here is very good and very unique. Every time we go I get to try some new flavor or ingredient that is surprisingly delicious. I wish they had a special night for locals with a lower price because I don't feel I can afford to eat here very often, but that is true for all restaurants in Mendocino. read more

Fog Eater Cafe was one of the best food experiences I have ever had and I mean it. We drove a couple hours up the coast just to visit this place. The Instagram got me and I had no idea if it was going to be as good at in the pictures but it was even better. HOW? There wasn't much of a wait even tho the place was bustling and looked tiny from the outside. We were offered a cute café table outside or a diner style table inside. We chose inside because it was chilly and besides the café is so fun to look at! Bold colors, antique dishes, kitschy salt and pepper shakers, and even the employees themselves had fantastic style with lace aprons and such. I was giddy to try the food. We ordered the Grits and grillades which had savory mushrooms on top and just a touch of heat, it was the first time I have enjoyed parsley. We also got a cauliflower and pepper jelly biscuit sandwich and even tho it was just a few mouthfuls compared to the other larger plates, it was kind of the star of the show. Defiantly pick a biscuit sandwich to try with your meal. The pepper jelly was new for me and now I know i love it, and the cauliflower was perfectly fried all on a fresh biscuit. It doesn't get much better. The beignets were gorgeous and came with 2 dipping sauce. We decided to make stuffed beignets so we could enjoy all the coffee chocolate and jam. We were having so much fun that after the first round of food and some delicious coffee from Black Oak out of Ukiah that we ordered the house special carrot cake waffles for... dessert? I loved the fullness of the waffle packed with carrots and topped with crispy toasted seeds. I wish I had asked for more syrup. By the end of the meal I wanted to belly up to the bar and hang out. Iv never had such a meal so close to the ocean before and it salted every bite. Everyone seemed sincerely and they were on top of everything and totally friendly. I cant wait to go back. Hardy dishes vegetarian dishes that don't leave you feeling slow and tired. I've been to a lot of places that try to do vegetarian comfort food and always leave wondering why I went. That's not the case with Fog Eater Cafe. I know why I came and that I'll be making the drive more often! I have celiac, so I deeply appreciate the care with which they made their gluten free food. Absolutely amazing food. I have come here every time I go to Mendocino because the food and vibes are perfect for a weekend getaway. I recently discovered they have a fully vegan menu which made my entire day. I tried their vegan cheese options and they were some of the best vegan cheese I've ever had. The service is amazing as well. I would highly recommend a visit to the spot regardless of your food preferences if you want up leveled southern comfort food. Complete gem, bridging gaps between comfort and healthy, vegan and decadent. We ordered wine flights, the daily specials and the Southern Plate, everything exceeded expectations. Best fried green tomatoes anywhere but the real winner was the chanterelle tart which we probably should've ordered at least three more of if we weren't completely stuffed. Wines were unpretentious, thoughtfully selected and perfect pairings for the meal. Ordered the mushroom risotto with tempura squash. Excellent taste. The reason for knocking off 2 stars - price and quantity. When the total charge for a take out of vegetarian risotto comes to $33+, then you'd better not be stingy on the serving size - unfortunately Fogeater was. The price of the risotto entree was $24, but after the mandatory 20% tip (even though it is takeout), taxes, and then another $2 that is added to any takeout order, this is how $33 came to be. If you are comfortable eating at the restaurant where you get the full service (and hence what a tip is to say "thank you" for) then I do recommend this restaurant even if they do skimp on portion size. read more

Good food but they charge an automatic 20% surcharge, even for take-out orders(!) which they humorously call a "gratuity". So I paid an extra $17 just for the guy to hand my food over the counter, which took all of 15 seconds. In other words, I was forced to pay, without my consent, the same "gratuity" that a table of two would have paid for being waited on for an hour and a half. Increase the cost of your plates if you need to. The spirit of a gratuity is that it is given freely: "gratuity: gr-too′ĭ-tē, -tyoo′- noun A favor or gift, usually in the form of money. That which is given without claim or demand; a free gift; a donation." ~ Either the owners aren't paying their staff enough and are passing that responsibility over to their customers, or the owners themselves are the staff and have decided to pad their own pockets with an obligatory little "sumfim sumfin"... Either way, no bueno. It colored the experience of our dinner which otherwise would have been lovely. Note to the owners: Instead just increase your menu costs, this doesn't feel good to customers and you will lose loyal take-out clientele, like us. read more
