Maybe I came at a bad night but I was thoroughly disappointed in FnB. With the strong reviews I thought my experience here would be exceptional and I'd be blown away...quite the opposite. I gave an extra star solely only due to the restaurant sourcing from local farms and using seasonal vegetables, which I always love. Our waiter was nice in the beginning of the meal and then as the night went on, he went MIA and we basically felt like we were being ushered out of the restaurant....bill dropped right as the last plate was left and we weren't even asked if we wanted dessert (which I did, but oh well). I always love some good veggies on the side, but felt like the entire menu was all vegetables/grains and only a few picks of actual meat. I am in AZ for work and I made it a goal of mine to dine at one of Scottsdale's best restaurants. I read great things about this place, so it was a no brainer. I love that the menu is super veggie forward, but super unique. The cabbage was by far my favorite, but the squash was a close second. The portions are huge!!! Order wisely. But...... Don't skip dessert and make sure that you order the apple cake with extra caramel sauce, it was delicious. read more

Second time at FnB at both times were soooo good. Our strategy is to order several of the non-entrees so we can try as many different dishes as possible. This restaurant is worth they hype. It's located in Scottsdale in a shopping center with plenty of parking around. The restaurant footprint is a little on the smaller side but it definitely feels intimate and romantic. Open only for dinners and you have to pay $20 bucks a person if make a reservation and they will charge if you do not show up. Our waiter was chill and mellow - he went through the menu thoroughly and was friendly throughout dinner. We wanted a light dinner as we were stuffed from a late lunch. Everything was phenomenal, fresh and tasty. The menu changes every 6 weeks or so because it's directed by food that is seasonal. They also have an extensive vegetarian portion on their menu and can modify some of the meat dishes to make those vegetarian too. My favorite dish was the local citrus- definitely a palate cleanser and so refreshing. Don't let the Socca and tomatoes fool you- this was a more heavier dish with chickpea pancakes and the flavor profile was savory and delicious. FnB is definitely one I save for special occasions. We've been here 3 times and have to say each time was very unique experience. Tonight we had family dinner to celebrate the new year. We ordered most of dishes that our waiter recommended and every one of them was delicious. Duck egg pasta was so satisfying without being rich or overly seasoned. The roast chicken was very moist and flavorful. The short rib was cut with fork tender and the lamb riblets were finger licking good. The squash was delicious and satisfying all on its own. Our favorite? All of them! Highly recommend. Btw, reservation is recommended/required. We saw people being turned away without reservations. read more

This is the best meal I have had in at least a year. The best dish of the night was the Asian pear, crispy prosciutto and labneh. I had no words for this dish, my jaw dropped. The pesto and butternut squash was amazing. Everything had an amazing balance of flavors. Creamy, crunchy, acid, sweet, rich, fatty, crisp, etc in an awesome mixture. Portions were quite generous. We shared one meat main, one veg main and 2 "apps" between 3 people and were very satisfied. Service was very good and prompt. We were too full for dessert but wished we could try it. Fantastic restaurant. Our best meal in three weeks of tourism. We ordered quite a few of the smaller plates, and found them innovative and delicious: the braised carrots with queso fresca, roasted yams with peanut sauce, peas with roast fennel, squash with Turkey meatballs. Huge portions... then one of the bluenose bass, to split. Too much food! But irresistible. The wine list is excellent including by the glass. Service was really attentive, too, and our waiter genuinely cared. We ate outdoors, to avoid crowding. Fnb has been on my "list" for years, but it's tucked in location makes me tend to forget about it when time to make a reservation. I finally got around to trying it out and I got to say I was completely underwhelmed. Maybe it was an off night, but nothing knocked my socks off. We had the beefsteak tomatoes, which were the best dish we had. The tomatoes were quite delicious. The potatoes, which we were expecting some herbaceous sauces on them but they were just drenched in oil with a spring of dill. It was very clunky and flavorless. The fig salad was an undressed iceberg salad, also lacked flavor. The Pasta on the other hand ,was so fricken salty and loaded with bacon it was hard to eat. My other complaint was we got our first two dishes right away and then sat there for 30 minutes before the others came out. Considering we just got pasta I'm not sure what the hold up was. Went here while in Scottsdale on vacation. Did some research and was pointed here by every travel website, saying this is the best restaurant in Scottsdale. We made reservations online and it was a bit off-putting that there was a deposit for reservations at the rate of $20/pp... but figured maybe its so busy that they want to make sure they don't have no shows. We arrived and were promptly seated. They have a courtyard set up and there were a lot of empty tables, which was surprising seeing how they did require the $20/pp deposit. We were greeted by our server who was very nice. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and their rotating menu. I was disappointed to find that their chicken spring rolls, which are THE talk of all of their reviews, were no longer on the menu. They are still also listed on their menu online. We ordered a squash dish with beans (I forget what exactly it was called), the Mexican pickled shrimp, the half chicken, the pork chop, and the pasta. The squash/beans needed more acid. I know I sound like a snob saying that but it was bland, but had so much potential. The pork chop itself was delicious but the sides, again, needed work. We also ordered cocktails, I had a something daisy (again, I'm horrible with names), and a few other cocktails at the table. One included basically an otter pop of alcohol. Their drinks were delicious and they were priced right. Not too expensive for a nicer restaurant. Overall, I would go back if we were in town. I think their reservation policy needs work... they didn't even ask if we wanted to put that $$ towards the bill, they just applied it automatically. Many friends had recommended this place, and We finally made it here. It's not an easy task to get a decent-time reservation (FYI - Prepaid $20 per each person for reservation). We had a great experience dining here. The ambiance is quiet classy and lovely. We were very fortunately with the nice weather and the corner table for two with spacious area. The hostess was super friendly and pleasant as she welcoming us and seated us. The waitress was equally pleasant and helpful with guiding us through the order (portions and flavors, etc) since it's out first time and with the winter menu. We started out with two sparking Brut Rose, Espana for a toast to early Valentines date -- it's only proper ! The starters were Hot-Rice & Salad of Trout. They both definitely flavorful and triggering many taste buds -- very delicious. The Fabulous Barolo arrived which, we let it breath for a bit to get the better taste...of course, it was fantastic! The main dishes were Pork & Veal Rolls (German style) and Baquette Grouper in Green Curry. We both were pleased with the taste -- very different in a very delicious way. We both like vegetables in our dishes but should not be over cook, which we like the taste of the veggies and the flavors of ingredients. We were so glad to be able to try out FnB. It was truly a different food experience (in a very good way) and a pleasant dining experience all together. We skipped dessert this time around, since we had a bit of larger bites then we anticipated (so yummy ). On that note, their food portions are more generous then other (so-called) fine dining restaurants. It's definitely a good thing to offer to patrons, especially when the food taste really good. I was a little hesitant about the $20 pre-charge per person as making the reservation, but the after dining experience confirmed that -- it's a best way to ensure the business is running (with 40 % capacity during the pandemic) if people are not showing up for their reservations. Great food, intimate, and superior staff Was back in PHX for a work trip and a few coworkers and I wanted to hit somewhere great for dinner. We agreed on FnB based on their rep and location. The restaurant is a cool re-use of spaces off of Old Town Scottsdale. It's close quarters, but they've made the space work and it comes across as intimate versus cramped. Volume wasn't bad and our group could converse and laugh without having to yell at each other, nor overhear the conversations of others. The food and service are what set FnB apart. We had an extra person join us and squeezed them in. The maitre d' quickly let us know he was able to play some Tetris with reserved parties and re-sat us with a bit more space. Super chill guys and the crew had our settings moved in two minutes flat. Then came the food. Oh, my. That sweet, sweet food. The pasta with lobster and mushrooms was mad smackin' tasty and I left no trace of it on my plate. Others had the same and loved it. Also popular were the fish, some okra-base side, and a vegetarian dish that I don't recall. everyone was enthuse about their food. Dessert was marked by a Semifreddo. I'm apparently an uncultured hyena, because I had never heard of this dish. But I ate it all like a beast and know it well, now. As did two others. Surprise date night and he did good. Have read a lot about this place but we never have been. The service was great, very prompt and never had to wait for anyone or anything. The place is small and very loud but I definitely wouldn't let it stop you. Unfortunately, I did not get the names of the dishes, they change with the season.  However we did try 4 items and loved 3/4.  The squash with feta and honey was delicious and I'm not a squash fan.  Then we got the lamb riblets and they had a little kick but went so nicely with the fresh cucumber salad on top of the rice.  They were so flavorful!  Highly recommend both off their summer menu.  Next we got the gnocchi and neither one of us liked it.  It was shaped like a traditional gnocchi but was most definitely a noodle.  Was supposed to have pancetta but 2 inch sized bacon strips were on top.  It was extremely watery and had 0 flavor.  It was really bland and I would for sure skip for the price.  Next we had the chicken dish and it was very fresh with the olive  tamponade type mixture with salad on top.  It was very fresh and good.  Wasn't packed with flavor like the first two dishes but definitely a great summer choice.  I would for sure get it again.   We will for sure be going back and would highly recommend. read more

This restaurant had very high ratings so my friend booked us a reservation. She had to pay $20 per person as a down payment to insure the reservation. I appreciate that people sometimes no-show on a reservation but I had never heard of this. You get it refunded if you actually show up. You are greeted at the door by Pavle who is friendly and charismatic. The service is excellent and accommodating. The atmosphere is intimate if crowded (you are seated pretty close to other tables). Pavle offered to pick out a wine for us and if we could guess what it was, he would pay for it. A fun offer, although he chose a blend which made it practically impossible for us to correctly identify the grapes. I wish I could say the wine was good, but it was mediocre. Fortunately it wasn't expensive. The food choices are unusual; both in combinations and textures, and I suspect that this is part of their attempt to distinguish themselves in a crowded market. They have a James Beard award which is proudly displayed. Perhaps this is more of a reflection of my lack of finesse in gastronomy, but I wasn't overly impressed with the selections or the taste of the food. Of the appetizers, the fruit and cheese salad was the best; the vegetable tamal with beans and lamb muti were unimpressively bland. Of the dinner offerings the pork had the best flavor and the best value for the price. The chicken was commonplace and fairly flavorless. The pasta was likewise lackluster despite having multiple flavors and textures. It seems that the chef is trying to create unique and unusual flavors but it just doesn't work. For desert, we shared the apple cake with ice cream and the butterscotch pudding. The apple cake was bland, while the pudding was pure sugar- inedible from my perspective. FnB is billed as an American New cuisine gastropub on Yelp but I didn't get that impression last night. To me, for some reason their Fall 2020 menu was more Southwest meets Moroccan. The chef does some really interesting things with herbs that punctuates each dish. Tables set up outside due to Covid but the service was still great and thankfully the air was cool. The Peruvian Spring Rolls were well stuffed with delicious chicken. The quark yogurt sauce brought a mild tang that cuts the meatiness. The Thai basil added a strong floral note that was a nice surprise. The charred sweet potato came recommended to go with my ribeye. The harissa flavor is bold but pairs with the mildness of the potato. It's a good dish but in the end I didn't need it. The ribeye was an unexpected take for a steak dish. The meat itself is beautiful and absolutely delicious but there was a lot going on on the plate. The ribeye is served on kind of a stew of chickpeas and eggplant along with pickled onions and heirloom tomatoes. On it's own, the stew was delicious - but I didn't quite understand it with the steak, and the chickpeas kind of competed with the main protein. It felt like a delicious steak, a good soup, and a salad served all at once and mixed together on one plate. Overall, everything was tasty though. The butterscotch pudding is probably what enticed me to try FnB in the first place and it didn't disappoint. The pudding is so velvety and smooth, and the butterscotch isn't too sweet which I appreciated. The homemade cream was cool and helped temper the sweetness even more. My favorite part though was the freshly grated nutmeg which took the dessert to another level. I'm salivating just thinking about this pudding right now. In the end, this was a very enjoyable meal. FnB is a hidden gem located in old town Scottsdale. Given the number of kudos for the chef from James Beard and other awards programs, I had to check it out. The dining room is a bit cramped and the evening we were there, a bit warm. But once the food started to appear, I forgot those things. This is a vegetable-forward restaurant. But it does serve a variety of proteins if you're not totally into vegetables, like myself. We started with the Tuscan Kale Falafel, Radishes and Creole Style BBQ Shrimp. The Shrimp was the winner of the first course. For entrees we ordered the Braised Niman Ranch Pork Shoulder and Dave's Roast Chicken. The Pork Shoulder was amazingly flavorable and tender. Very surprised this place has a James Beard award. Most of this restaurant is very beautiful, except for the dining room with the open kitchen in it, which looks/feels like a deli and is unbelievably warm. Avoid that room if possible. For drinks, we tried Jay's Daquiri and my partner asked for a spicy margarita, which for some reason they couldn't create for him, so just a regular margarita. Drinks were small and weak - skip them and get wine/beer instead. The menu is a very veggie-heavy; lots of bean and squash dishes. The smoked salmon appetizer was pretty good but had scant amounts of salmon in it. I got the pasta entrée, which was watery and looked more like chicken soup. My partner got the ribeye, which was served with rice and a roasted red pepper and looked/tasted like something Chili's might serve you. The service was wonderful - they are friendly and attentive here. We left disappointed for sure, especially with the older raving reviews for this place. I used to love this restaurant so much!!! The food, the service, the all female kitchen, it's location, etc. Pre Covid, my family and I pretty much went there on a monthly basis. I have gone three times over the past 8 months and the food is definitely not the same as before. They have also increased their prices which does go with the quality of their food. We went for my birthday last week and ordered 4 dishes to share. They charged $39 for a bowl of pasta which was mainly an enormous serving of goat cheese with a small amount of pasta. It was meh... The other dishes were also just ok. Like I said, this was my FAVORITE place to eat once upon a time. Not so much anymore. I will say the service is still FABULOUS though. read more

I don't know why I was perusing the James Beard Award winners, I'd never done that before, but that's where I came across Charlene Badman's name as the winner of best chef Southwest. A quick Google and I found the words "Scottsdale" and "vegetable whisperer" so I shuffled FnB into my Yelp bookmarks, which is why I found myself facing the setting Scottsdale sun on FnB's patio sipping a SanTan beer and scanning a menu a few months later. We decided to forgo traditional entrees and order an array of veggie forward dishes, and none disappointed. We started with a ricotta apricot salad which was exactly what I wanted - subtle flavors beautifully working together, a picture perfect start. The next dish was the crudite, and honestly, when it came out I was like "hey, wait, this is just a bunch of raw vegetables on a plate and a bowl of VERY purple dressing!" Turns out that is what a crudite is! Skeptically I dipped the veggies - tomatoes, celery, radishes, and cucumber, along with orange slices and lime to squirt on top - in the dres- WOAH! WHAT! That is delicious! What is it!? How are raw veggies this good? The chamoy sumac (I think?) dressing with the citrus and veggies were spot on, surprising, and completely unique. I'm kind of excited now, because we have like 4-5 appetizers left and the next one continues to amaze. A kubbeh is a little dumpling, this one filled with a mushroom filling, topped with fennel and greens and onion blossoms, sitting in a broth - the earthy flavors of a mushroom soup but with quite a few more textures than soup. The dishes kept coming. Salmon cured in citrus with cucumbers, flowers, and buttermilk - hints of a lox platter but with the brightness of ceviche rather than the weightiness of smoke. A brandade (ramekin-ed fish cake?) with a cherry tomato salad and lemon, simply spread it on toasted bread for some perfect carby, buttery bites! Then we're zipped across the globe for tofu in a sesame ginger broth - not a tofu guy but yeah, I might be now if you do that to the tofu! Then the closer - Viking potatoes. What makes them Viking, you ask? Because they ruled the seas with the iron hand of lemon-parmesan butter and the sly attack of salty olives. Naw, I don't know why they're Viking, but these potatoes were so good they can have my credit card number and a key to my house! Every dish comes with a spoon so you can drizzle the delicious sauces and dressings and broths, dousing your bite in the flavors that settle on the plate. A great meal, and they also have award worthy local wine and spirit collections which we didn't really get into. Don't let the veggie talk dissuade you if that's not your thing - it will become your thing at FnB! read more

FnB was the highlight of our long weekend dining/golf trip to the Scottsdale area. We chose FnB because of the chef's recent James Beard award and they did not disappoint. The menu items are meant for sharing and are are substantial enough that two diners can get by with a total of 4 or so items. There were no misses in the meal, but two of the dishes were the best bites of our entire trip. The first was a salad that mixed red and golden beets with some greens, smoked salmon and a tasty dill based sauce. Sounds like a strange combination, but if anyone suggest some smoked salmon with your beets - go for it. Really a great overall flavor combination. On the entree section of the menu we really enjoyed the fresh pasta with beans, bacon and greens. The pasta was a perfect texture and the sauce was bright and very flavorful that really went well with the beans and greens. Service was on point. Interesting wines, including Arizona wines. Also, don't leave without the world famous Butterscotch Pudding. Awesome! Great job Fnb read more
