The cuisine is passable. It was really expensive. There is a good selection of seafood on the menu. Even though you don't really interact with the staff, they were friendly. The aesthetic is reminiscent of an old-fashioned diner with bass fish all on the wall. Order, take a seat, wait for your number to be called, go collect your food, and then eat. I've always sort of dismissed Flying Fish. Could it be the everlasting construction? The various great looking options in proximity? Who knows. However, during the Quarantine I had a friend suggest that I snag one of their margaritas togo, so off I went. When I called it took them quite some time to pick up. You know, that cringy kind of 10 or 15 rings situation. When the gentleman picked up, it was apparent by his brevity that he either 1) Was very busy or 2) wasn't accustomed to answering the phone. Anyways, I ordered the fried catfish with okra. Margarita too. When I arrived to pick up they had a pretty solid operations going on. You pick up the food at the window from the patio, paying when you arrive. They are selling gloves, toilet paper and hand sanitizer as well that you can get with your order. You fill your own drinks, you get your own cocktail sauce, it is no frills, but they don't need em. Their food makes up for it. He ordered the grilled catfish with zucchini and green beans and I ordered the salmon tacos which come with red beans and rice. The salmon tacos were perfectly cooked, but came in a crunchy taco shell. This surprised me a bit. I liked the salmon but this was not my favorite. The red beans were very tasty. His catfish was great. I have never had grilled catfish, this was flavorful and delicate. Again cooked perfectly. The veggies were AWESOME. The grilled zucchini had great flavor and still some texture and the green beans definitely were not canned and had fresh garlic. He went on and on about green beans. GREEN BEANS! We both agreed that we screwed up not ordering any hushpuppies. I will not make that mistake again. They also have po boys on the menu and the oyster has my name on it the next time I come around. Gumbo had a delicious flavor, very little protein but LOTS of celery and okra. Boiled shrimp were large but no seasoning. I ordered 4fried shrimp and 2 catfish basket. Had to request my second piece of fish as they had forgotten it. Husband ordered Mahi with Vera Cruz sauce that included an up charge and they forgot to include it. The Mahi may have been a 3 oz piece of fish and it was way over cooked. They're busy here and that's good. They also have salmon, red snapper, crab legs, frog legs, tilapia, and chicken. I love to get a combo basket of catfish and shrimp! What's better than fried fish without having to splatter grease in your own kitchen?! Another favorite is the grilled salmon with rice and veggies. The grilled squash and zucchini are just amazing! I have passed this place frequently but never stopped until today. Good decision on my end because the food is pretty darn good. I had the salmon with garlic butter, and hubby had the shrimp and catfish basket. The salmon lacked a real garlic flavor (either not enough or they use powder instead of fresh). Flying Fish is a tasty, well-located little fish joint in downtown Arlington, near Hooligans and Twisted Root. The decor/ambiance of the place has a an old-timey diner feeling. First time I went, I knew it was a place I was going to bring my dad to because he'd love it (and I was right!). Lots of funny trophy fish with wings added on the wall, photos of fishing trips, and just some fun eclectic stuff. I brought my mom specifically into the bathroom because I thought it was hilarious they store their extra TP rolls in a fishing net. They have an extensive menu. All kinds of fried fish baskets (comes with fries and hush puppies!), but you don't have to be unhealthy and eat fried fish. They also have a grilled fish section (served with veggies and red beans & rice). No matter how you go, you can't go wrong! All the plates are delicious and generous portions. I have to specifically recommend their grilled or blackened fish tacos. It's my absolutely favorite thing on the menu. They have beer on tap, and a really sad margarita machine. Seriously, don't order a margarita there. It's mostly ice and not a good flavor. Just a tip because I was disappointed when I ordered one. Overall, it's a wonderful place, consistently good. Food is good, but they are ripping people off on Uber Eats. Prices on Uber Eats are considerably higher than at the restaurant. This is ridiculous. If you want to charge more for "carryout" items, then incorporate that into a "delivery fee charge" - don't jack up the prices. Example: Hog Wallow Fry - $20.99 at the restaurant Hog Wallow Fry - $27.30 on Uber Eats Lobster stew, cup - $6.99 at the restaurant Lobster stew, cup - $9.10 on Uber Eats Okra - $3.50 at restaurant Okra - $4.55 on Uber Eats So, If I ordered all those items, it would cost me 24% more to order Uber Eats than to go to the restaurant!!! This is a flat rip-off. Just because I want the convenience of ordering delivery food does not mean I should pay extremely, significantly higher prices.
