What an unexpected gem in the middle of the suburbs. Celebrate Mother's Day here and the charm of every detail was unbelievable. The staff and chef made sure I could have a dairy-free vegetarian option and was so thoughtful about my diet tart restrictions. We want to come back for formal high tea.

Amazing Grace Lantern, surrounded by the colors of Christmas

I needed to send an "out of this world gorgeous" Sympathy arrangement with gift. I searched all over internet to find something that was worthy of my standard of approval. And when I found the sample I wanted it was a design by the Flowers in the Attic shop, and I could not believe my luck, this random fab design was actually created by a shop that was actually in Pittsburgh,Pa where the funeral was being held. It was like kismit. I called and spoke to Kent over phone, he was so nice and explained in detail, all my options. He texted me samples, and he allowed me the freedom to add some custostimzed choices as it was near Christmas. After he finished it, he texted me photo, and text back with delivery time. It was an outstanding experience and I will use them again!

Chef Donna quiche and Tuscan Salad

Jordana's review is hard to top. She's right. Dining here is an experience. It is a jewel of a place, especially in Penn Hills, but even in all of Pittsburgh. I'm new to the area and live in Penn Hills and have been sorely dissapointed in the severe lack of dining establishments, much less ones to brag about. Finally! I'm more than overjoyed that it is A+ quality in food presentation, taste, portion, ambiance, and customer service. The hours take a bit getting used to as i don't usually keep to a typical lunch schedule and just eat whenever I want. So do be warned that the restaurant portion is open 11 to 2 Tuesday thru Saturday and 10 to 2 on Sunday as of this posting. Note they're not open for dinner (bummer). (The store portion has different hours as posted on their website www.flowersintheattic.com.) I was greeted warmly by the hostess (at the time not realizing that she was Chef Donna herself) and decided to dine outside. Outside is a covered wrap-around porch on this wonderful old house turned restaurant/store/flower shop (in back). I sat at a table for 2 on the side of the house overlooking the side yard. Beside me were hibiscus bushes in the yard and hanging flowering planters hanging from the covered porch. Buffferflies came and went. This is truly a setting to feed and quiet the soul which is what I seek when I'm looking for new adventures. I asked my server, Mary, what I should order as a first-timer as the menu all looked so good. She was gracious and eager to inform me of my choices. After hearing about a special panini and the quiche, I decided on the fresh vegetable quiche (a Chef Donna quiche, as the menu declares) and a side Tuscan salad Mary recommended to go with it. It is a salad with pears, blue cheese, and pine nuts. When my meal arrived, the presentation was so lovely and invitiing. There was even a pink garden rose on my plate to add to the eye-catching appeal. I ate every last morsel of the quiche and salad -- both equally delicious and just the right amount of food. I felt as though I had eaten a healthy lunch in my own little corner of heaven out on that porch. To top off a great meal, I knew they must have great home-made desserts, as well, and sure enough, Mary named them all to me. All sounded great but I'm a chocoholic so landed on the Chocolate cake stuffed with mousse and cheesecake. I got it to go to enjoy later (ok, later turned out to be as soon as I got inside my apartment door). I warmed up the cake and had a glass of cold milk with it. Oh my! Forget the healthy lunch part....but oh so decadent! This is truly a gem and I recommend any who don't usually venture into Penn Hills to dine to come out and try them! I know it's high on my list for friends coming into town! I think the price at about $25 (before tip) for quiche, salad, iced tea, and dessert, for the quality of the food plus presentation plus ambiance plus good customer service equates to just the right price.

This is definitely a hidden gem. It's quaint, it reminds me of something out of a Hallmatk movie and the food is good.

    Aussie Eggs Benedict

This is the cutest little cafe and flower shop ever! All the decorations are gorgeous and when you walk in, you feel right at home. There is not a lot of room for seating, so make sure you call for a reservation first! They have their flower shop in a little building behind the cafe and there is also a gift shop upstairs in the main building. We went during the holiday season so there was a ton of Christmas decorations upstairs. It was simply gorgeous and most everything is for sale! Once we were seated and had ordered our food, it took almost 45 minutes for us to receive it. The waitress said it was due to them being so busy but there were only 5 tables of people there so we were a bit confused. The service wasn't the best. Our waitress never came back around to refill drinks or ask if we needed anything. The food was amazing though. I got the Aussie Eggs Benedict. I love how it was a bit different than traditional eggs Benedict with there being potatoes instead of an English muffin. The presentation was fabulous as well. It looks like the chef truly took his/her to make everything perfect. I don't live in the area so I probably won't be back soon but if I'm ever in Penn Hills again and looking for a brunch spot, I wouldn't mind coming back here.

Flowers in the Attic is a unique little gem of an experience. First the grounds are lovely and inviting. You will be charmed into strolling, guaranteed. This is after you've wandered from room to room inside because there is an eclectic offering of wall decor, mantle knick-knacks, and owner highlighted photography on canvas that will cause a pause! The woodwork is splendid and beautifully restored. There is a little boutique with chunky jewelry, greeting cards and some trendy resort wear... nice scarf collection, too. Now for brunch: Oh my yum! Frittata, omelette, brunch pizza, breakfast sandwich... the list goes on and on. Difficult to choose, but you cannot make a poor choice. The Chef is clearly a perfectionist from the white linens to the fresh ingredients to the perfect presentation. The staff is happy and accomodating, chatty or not - you set the tone. Make a reservation - You'll leave here very happy on many different levels!

    Afternoon Tea service
    Catherine H.

This was the second time I visited this establishment. I thought I would give it another shot after not having the best of experiences last time around. It's one of very few places in the area that offer afternoon tea. Unfortunately this experience was even worse than the last. The atmosphere is lovely but entirely undermined by the incongruous quality of the service. The afternoon tea service costs about $25 each and is set in an old Victorian style house with soft instrumental music playing. The waitress by contrast was loud, talkative, and asked my party multiple times if we were there for the tea before yelling back in to the kitchen. She eventually brought out the three tiered tray of traditional finger sandwiches, sweets, and scones. She then asked if we would like tea which was kind of odd since she had previously at great volume declared that that was exactly what we were there for. She then brought out a pot of hot water and a small box with a very meager selection of bagged teas. We weren't offered sugar, cream, or anything else for our tea. The food itself was a mixed bag. The cucumber sandwich was inedible with dried dill covering it and an entire pat of butter and a tablespoon of cream cheese sandwiching a thin sliced of cucumber between dry white bread. The chicken salad on croissant was drowned in mayonnaise. The cranberry scone was very good. The sweets were average. Overall, the place is worth visiting to shop their gift shop selection and maybe take in the atmosphere but not worth taking the time to eat there, especially not for afternoon tea.

Flowers in the Attic never fails to impress! No matter the season, this gorgeous 'mansion' is decked out with amazing displays of tempting merchandise (I always shop after lunch!) - Christmas was especially spectacular, a highlight of my trip to Pittsburgh. Need a special floral arrangement or gift- you'll find it here! Oh- and how did I not mention that the food is amazing? Farm to table, fresh and delicious offerings- hard to decide between salads, sandwiches, quiches and daily specials. Excellent service, unique gifts and quality food- can't go wrong!

Got a Pinot noir wine and waters Starter=soup of the day: tomato w/ chickpea and chorizo- bold tomato flavor and lots of arugula in it. Not so much chorio but flavor was very good, not overly salty. 10/10 After the soup we put our nit-picking goggles on as we knew this was a pretty sophisticated meal. Daily special- pan seared mahi mahi with asparagus fennel kohlabi and arugula salad citrus buerre Blanc. Light citrus flavor is found thru the mahi mahi, its sauce and the salad. Very congruent. Asparagus was a neutral addition. Not flowing with or against the mahi. Fish was cooked well. Just lots of raw red onion on the salad was a little overpowering. 7/10 Red wine braised short rib- didn't ask how well done, so seems chefs choice. We have a preference towards med rare. This was cooked well done making it a tad tough-stringy. Mashed potatoes with some larger pieces of potato, but very neutral plain flavor, great with the beef sauce. Carrots cooked well, just neutral, natural flavor. Overall a very classic flavor combo that works.7/10. Would stop by again to try more dishes. Ps- when paying we noticed final bill to sign was more than first bill at table. When we asked why the difference we were told it's the credit card fee of $3. This was really the first time I've seen this at a restaurant, yet alone at a decent place like one. Would have been best for them to tell us this upfront.

The food was pretty decent for bar food. I'd suggest their soups, wings, and quesadillas- the nachos left a lot to be desired. Service was pretty decent as well. It took a while to be greeted since we sat at a table and not the bar- but to be fair, the bartender was the only one serving, and when she made it over she did a great job (even though we weren't drinking, which I know is a pet peeve of bartenders). My Salmon Oscar with asparagus was very good. I enjoyed every bite of the salmon and crab. My daughter's chicken parm came with a ton of linguini. My wedding soup and my husband's French onion soup were delicious. The wedding soup was loaded with meatballs and chicken. My husband has a thing for French onion soup and tries it every chance he gets. He said this may have been the best ever. We split a Reuben sandwich and upgraded to onion rings. The waitress brought us each a half portion so we didn't have to divide it ourselves, which was nice. There was plenty of meat on the sandwich, making it acceptable, not great but good enough. Onion rings were very good. Dessert sounded tempting, a cherry crème brûlée. It was okay, kind of like cherry jello with a sugar crust on top. A bit disappointing to say the least. Our waitress was on top of filling the water glasses and was very nice. Now for the bad news and why I'm only giving 3 stars. I went to the ladies room before eating and there was no hot water to wash my hands. I asked my husband if the men's room had hot water and he said no. We both let it run but it never got hot, not even warm. Then I noticed (after drinking several glasses of water unfortunately) that there was a crack in my water glass. I mentioned it to my husband and he said, "you should see the chips in the glass tabletop over her on my side". I get it that wear and tear happens, but these things should be caught before serving guests. And as far as the hot water...how do servers and kitchen workers properly clean their hands after using the toilet without hot water? So the food is fairly solid and reasonably priced. But be on the lookout for chipped glassware and table tops. And use your own hand sanitizer if you have it!
