Bob, the owner, has been keeping this high end kitchen running over 50 years and only is open on Friday and Saturday now, so I hope you get to try it before he retires. My absolute favorites are the blackened prime rib with teriyaki And the salmon wrapped around lump crab but this time I had the LUMP crab stuffed mushrooms and peanut butter pie. Great bar and drink options. Fine food in Leechburg! I either go here, la vigneta winery, or National public house if I'm in the area craving some fine food and drinks. read more

The food was great, the service exceptional, only challenging thing is that you have to walk downstairs to the dining room, but it was easily overcome. The prime rib and the salmon were delicious. The Caesar's salad came with delicious croutons. This was our first time there but will not be the last. read more

I chose this place based on Yelp reviews and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was quiet and enjoyable. My girlfriend and I both had the Apple and walnut salad to start. The apples were crisp and fresh and the dressing was a nice pop of sweet and sour poppy dressing. My girlfriend enjoyed the Jumbo Lump crab cakes. The jumbo lump meat was delicious. It came with mashed potatoes,braised carrots, and coleslaw. I had the New Zealand Oro King Salmon. I had my blackened. The lemon dill aioli had a nice tartness to it. While the mashed potatoes, braised carrots and the bean sides were very tasty, the potatoes and carrots felt a bit heavy for the salmon summer dinner. But that's a personal preference and they were still really good. I appreciated the local beer options and really enjoyed the Dancing Gnomes Wishbone Pale Ale. We will definitely be coming back for another meal. read more

My spouse and I had a wonderful experience at 1844 last night! We started with the fried mozzarella and marinara. Hand breaded and well seasoned, it was fried crispy and perfect. As someone who doesn't even enjoy marinara, I have to say it was the best I've ever had! I would have eaten it by the spoonful if I were somewhere less civilized! Haha! Next, we had salads. I had the Cesar and my spouse had the house with ranch. All of the produce was fresh. The croutons in the Cesar are made from their cornbread. They were toasted, but not too hard. They were perfectly sweet. For our mains, we had the filet minion and the prime rib (blackened.) My spouse recalls this as the best steak she's ever had. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and had wonderful flavor and char. We had broccoli (deep fried) and potatoes as a side, both of which were tasty. Dessert was the peanut butter pie and the crème brûlée. Both came garnished with fruit on the plates. Both desserts were light and full of flavor. Service was amazing. Our server, Chuck, was personable and helpful with questions. Incredible and kind. The owners came to check on us during our meals and were incredibly caring as well. The downstairs dining room is dark, but well lit with decorative white lights. Intimate and small, it's certainly a place you can sit with your loved ones to catch up, celebrate a special occasion, or just enjoy a decent meal! Overall, we had a wonderful experience. Food was excellent, I got the pan seared Salmon and A fried potato patty and it was tender, fresh and very flavorful. Next is the service which was excellent, my sever the two night I went was Karen and Bailey they were both very kind and helpful. The atmosphere was amazing very calm and peaceful place to be and a nice place where I could eat my food and not feel rushed. On a whim my wife and I when to this restaurant. Figured give it a shot and we were glad we did. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere down stairs is wonderful. Felt like I was in Gettysburg. We stared out with a drink which was a Sam Adam's Dark, a little pricey for bottle but good. Had the house salads with blue cheese dressing and house poppyseed. Both excellent. Also had the sushi "beef" which was unique and very tasty with the smoked Gouda. My wife had the crab cakes and they were almost all king crab chunks. She said they were top 3 best she's ever had!! I had the fillet medium. Bothe came with excellent mashed potatoes and carrots. Both are not my favorite but these were excellently prepared. The horseradish sauce which was homemade was a perfect match with the fillet. Outstanding. For dessert cheesecake with raspberry sauce and peanut butter pie both were excellent. Excellent in every way, I worked there as a server for several years and dined there many times. I brought my parents there and well. Everything was always top notch with the best ingredients you can get. Never a disappointment unless you have the McDonald's type taste buds. In that case stick to your own class of restaurants. I loved this place. Everything about it was old school and charming. The decor was warm and rustic. It's like you're eating in a farmhouse from the 1800's, complete with a working fireplace. I had a reservation (you make it through their website) and was seated immediately. I must say it wasn't busy at all, but the server was with me within a minute. I have a restricted diet, and they were very helpful with accommodating me and making suggestions. They start you out with a basket of some sort of bread. It's like a sweet cornbread. Very good! The menu is small. Mostly meat and seafood. The choices they have are all good though. I had the prime rib, and they were able to add a side of the most fantastic grilled shrimp I've ever had. I'm not a beer or wine drinker. They did have what looked like a nice menu of those options. They also had a full liquor bar. I hear they make a great Tom Collins. The cost was comparable or cheaper then like restaurants. Everyone was nice. The owner showed me out and inquired about my experience. Very nice guy! I'll definitely be back. read more

Visiting family in Leechburg is always a treat. Happy to discover the businesses are slowly returning to a regular schedule. My cousins were thrilled this restaurant reopened in order to treat fora fabulous meal. We began with delicious appetizers of stuffed mushroom caps, mozzarella sticks and one other. All scrumptious followed by salads beet and arugula along with the pear salad. Our entrees ranged from crab cakes to steaks equally exquisite. All were prepared to our desired request and very little left for the next day. Dessert was peanut butter pie and creme brulee Fantastic time, excellent service and atmosphere. Every time I eat at the 1844 I come out saying that I just had one of the finest meals of my life. I have a hard time ordering anything besides the blackened combo because the prime rib is the best piece of meat you can get anywhere within 25 miles and the fish always impeccably fresh straight from Honolulu! Last time I went however I ordered the blacked salmon and was just amazed at how incredible it was with the lemon aioli. The drinks and service are also extraordinary! A notch or two above casual, 1844 is a quaint, inviting, heavy atmosphere kind of eatery. The menu is not huge, but the flavors definitely are! First, its kind of difficult for first-timers to find our way to the dining room. It was dark outside and though the parking lot was lit, the entry was poorly lit and there was a lot of looking at one another for affirmation that 'yep - keep going, we're with you!' Once there (down the steps, not up) we were not greeted by anyone, so on a Saturday night we made our way to the bartender and asked to sit at a table set for 5. We had a reservation, but that appeared to be incidental. So we were seated at a table for 4 in the pathway of the service staff. Not ideal, but not terrible. On to the meat of the review... Appetizers: we had the 1/3 meatballs (bison, beef and pork). Very good and generous enough to share. W had the mushroom caps, declared divine. I had the tomato bisque soup which was lovely and tasty, but not very warm. A basket of corn bread squares was served - soft, moist and sweet - loved by all. Salads: Apple Walnut and Heart of Romaine - both excellent - fresh and flavorful and quite large. Meals: Two prime ribs, one blackened. Both received high praise. Crab cakes also interesting to look at and well seasoned, also a generous portion and not a lot of filler. Salmon Roulade, excellent, couldn't finish my plate. Must note the sides: Glazed carrots, fresh slaw and mashed potatoes. No substitutions that's it. I must say glazed carrots is not a veggie that I would every have chosen - until now. Those sides held their own against all of our meals and were fantastic. Hooray for no substitutions. Prices are on the high side, but the quality of the meal certainly justifies the prices. I am so happy we rediscovered this restaurant. They have always had fresh seafood with delectable sauces that are the best around. We came here about 2 weeks ago for our anniversary and got the fresh swordfish and prime rib. It was delicious with generous portions. The mushroom soup was to die for also. Had been wanting to try this place for awhile, finally got around to it recently. They are only open 3 nights a week so we made reservations for an early dinner on a Saturday thinking they would be busy, but there was no need for them at 5:00. When you enter there is no one to greet you and have the option to go upstairs or down, after making the wrong decision we found our way downstairs to a very nice dining area. Great atmosphere with a beautiful huge fireplace. Too bad it wasn't winter as it would be beautiful with it lit. But again, greeted by no one. Older gentleman behind the bar who was the owner I believe. He told us to sit anywhere. The menu is fairly simple but with a good variety, including sushi as an app. My dinner mates tried to order their favorite lemon drop martinis, and our server said the bartender/owner wouldn't be able to make them. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms that were very good, 2 of us got the prime rib, one the crab cakes. We were very pleased with the prime rib, and the crab cakes were also said to be very good. Cheddar mashed potatoes and broccoli were the nights sides. You have no other choices for sides, which was fine for me this night, but some other options would be nice. Cornbread is on every table. Dessert was peanut butter pie, which was good, although it was served with strawberries and blueberries which I thought were odd accompaniments with the peanut butter. It was also over priced at $8...it was good but not THAT good. Should have been $6 at most. All in all an enjoyable dinner in a different place with nice atmosphere. Our service was great. It's a little high priced when compared to higher end restaurants in the city, but was a nice change in an out of the way location. read more

Never will I ever return. I called a week in advance for reservations and called to inquire about using multiple credit cards, no problem I was told. But when the check came the waitress was completely incapable of splitting the checks. This was the end of a terrible evening. The waitress never introduced herself and when ordering drinks, she could only take one persons order at a time. It took her more than a half hour after receiving our drinks to order apps and dinner. In between delivering food she never checked to see if we needed refills or check on how our food was. When paying $50/plate I'd expect service to match the expense of the food. I called to explain to the manager "Bob" and at one point of the conversation I asked if he was listening in which he replied 'huh'. This just proves that they don't care that their service was so terrible I called back to discuss. Not only was there no apology, there was no invite back where they would possibly make sure the second experience would be better. By the way, there were two servers, one bartender and four tables among the three. Very disappointed in this experience and to find out that a privately owned establishment could careless about the issues my family and I experienced. read more

We ate downstairs and it was great. Service is wonderful and the owner, Bob, is very gracious. Can't recommend enough! They are open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. After sampling a number of area restaurants on trips to visit the fam, I did a little research and discovered the existence of 1844. I was worried about getting a reservation since they are only open 3 days per week, but it was no problem. They must do most of their business in weddings and parties. There weren't many other diners that night. We were excited to try sushi and other tasty non-Pittsburgh items and it really paid off. When we pulled up, we were concerned that we had made a mistake. The Restaurant is located in an old farm house and dinner was being served in the basement. The building was pretty cool and the atmosphere was actually very nice but it certainly didn't seem like a place that would serve sushi! Negatives: no beer on tap and the wine list was pretty short, although we were told that it is being redone. I wasn't a huge fan of the mix and match approach to pairing fish with various sauces (beurre blanc, mango, wasabi cream, and a bunch of others). Positives: the fish options, prime rib, mushroom caps and sushi were all really good. Salads were very tasty, but not included with dinner. Blackened swordfish with mango sauce was a winner! Certainly the best place we've eaten in Armstrong county. read more

Consistently the best restaurant in the area (and no matter where I go in Pittsburgh, I keep coming back to this place as probably my favorite). It's so cozy and the servers are always on top of things. Most importantly, the food here never disappoints. One of my favorites is the salmon. It's ridiculously delicious, and I've never been to another restaurant that has been able to top it. It literally melts in your mouth! Many of the locals like this place. Went there for my anniversary on the advice of friends and was greatly disappointed. Asked for medium well done steak and one side was burned - they other very red. Neither meal was anything to remember and the price was not worth the food. Won't ever go back. Sushi is the way to go when going to 1844. I stumbled upon it while visiting some friends in the area. 1844 is a great local restaurant with a great style of quality American food. We recently dined at 1844. The food was very good. The service was not. We had reservations, but that did not seem to matter. After finding our way to the dining room, we were ignored. There were employees working the room. They all managed to avoid any contact with us. We were ignored. Finally we told the man behind the bar that we had reservations for four. We later learned that he is the owner of tbe restaurant. He pointed to a table, no one seated us, and told us to sit down. It took an hour from when we arrived to place our order. Really the worst service i have ever experienced. Food is good. But dont expect to be treated as a valuable customer. I did notice that There appeared to be some "regular" customers in the room. My boyfriend and I went here today for the first time for our three year anniversary. This place is truly a hidden gem. I have never seen a restaurant so ridiculously clean before like this one. The atmosphere is so sophisticated. The building was built obviously in 1844 and is truly breathtaking both inside and out. I loved that the place was not crowded and loud at all. It is truly the definition of the perfect place to take your date to or for any special occasion for that matter. The food was top notch and of the highest quality. They fly in their fish weekly from Honolulu! I ordered the 1844 salad with poppy seed dressing and the chicken parmigiana and my boyfriend ordered the same salad with blue cheese crumble and the filet mignon. Everything was incredibly delicious!!! The meals do range from 20-50 dollars though every cent is worth it. Trust me. The staff are super polite and professional as well. First and foremost, this place has unbelievable food especially the sushi. My boyfriend set up reservations last year for my birthday, this year I asked to go back and we decided we would make it our Valentine's dinner. The holiday dinner was disappointing (yet again, I must express the food was excellent). Since there was a limited menu due to the holiday, my portion was extremely small with no other options for add-ons. If you want to keep the portions small (......with a heap of potatoes) with a big price tag, thats fine but give me something else to potentially eat. Sushi was taken to a table before we ordered, casually asked about the sushi. We had go some excuse why it wasn't being served tonight yet another order sushi/sashimi was taken to another table during the coarse of our evening. Please explain? Went there for Thanksgiving dinner, very disappointing! Had cold rolls on the table when we were seated, husband informed that pop was an upcharge, (it was on tap by the way), $2.00, each of us got the turkey dinner, $30.00 each, are you kidding me?, and there was a lot of dark meat on both of our plates. I would prefer white meat, and a few other diners were complaining amongst themselves about that.....pumpkin pie slice had a dab of whipped cream on the side, and all in all, very disappointing....will not go back ever. Went here for dinner (with reservations but didn't seem necessary on a Friday night). There aren't many "nice" dining options in the area and 1844 is a great option. I went with my parents; we had the stuffed mushroom app which was amazing. I had the burger which was very good - I would definitely get it again. Cheesecake for desert didn't disappoint. I took my wife here for her birthday. Her and i have always wanted to go and heard that the locals love it. We made reservations for Saturday September 28, 2013. We both ordered a glass of wine. After about 10 minutes of small talk we both decided on what to order. So far so good, and thats where the good ends. I ordered prime rib, medium. Karen ordered crab wrapped wirh salmon and risotto...they had NO potatoes..said they sold out on friday...what joke,. So i ordered pasta, another starch, with my prime rib. To make a long story short, our meals were brought to the table in 10 minutes. No lie. 10 minutes. Wow, how can you cook a prime rib in 10 minutes not to mention, pasta, the sauce, salmon wrapoed crab and risotto??? I'll tell you how, they use Chef Mike..yes you guessed it chef microwave. The food was absolutely horrendous. Did we complain you might ask. Yes. The owner came over, older genlteman who had not a care in the world. Service was terrible but the food was good. The owner was extremely rude, he looked right at us and never even acknowledged we were there. They made us wait 30 minutes before even saying hello. Once we were seated it took another 20 minutes just to get a glass of water. We were there 1 1/2 hour before we were served are meal. We used to go the 1844 House, but we had not been for years until this weekend. We went for my birthday, and we could not have been happier. My husband's filet was cooked perfectly, tender, and flavorful, and my chicken marsala was the best I have ever had. Our salads were incredible, and the cheesecake and peanut butter pie for dessert were delicious. Our server was knowledgeable and personable, and the entire evening was perfect. We would class the 1844 House together with Lidia's Pittsburgh or The Mighty Oak Barrel in Oakmont in terms of food quality and creativity. 1844 is hands down THE BEST PRIME RIB IN THE PITTSBURGH AREA. Hands down. My husband is from Armstrong County and remembered this place fondly from when he was little. He took me there for Valentine's Day one year and I was hooked. Since then (say...2007?), this has been our go-to place for special occasions (including birthdays, anniversarys and, in the case of the birth of our son our "last meal" without kids.) The ambiance is amazing, especially the downstairs "wine cellar" area - dark and romantic, perfect for a cool fall night. The service is always impeccable and the appetizer of crab stuffed mushroom is the stuff I have dreams about. However, the prime rib --- and here's a tip: get it blackened!!! -- is phenomenal. You always get a great cut of meat, it is seasoned perfectly and tastes just as good as leftovers. I've been to this restaurant at least 25 times in my life and have never had them tell me that they were 'out of potatoes'. The carrots that come with the prime rib are amazing too. If you want amazing prime rib, please give this place a try. I've only had better prime rib once in my life in Seattle. read more
