Ran across this place while looking for the UPS store. I was in the mood for some sort of pastry…read moreso, I popped in. This is a very small bakery but, there were many ppl in line so I figured it would be pretty good. I went in for something sweet as it was about 8 in the morning but, there were scones, fresh out of the oven that I had to try. I got the cheddar and chive scones. OmG. So warm and good. Crisp edges and soft and fluffy everywhere else. I ate it in minutes. This would go amazing with a side of pasta. My goodness. 10 out of 10. When I am back in the area, I'll try a warm Blueberry scone.

We were lucky enough to snag some goodies and got a bit of everything, we just weren't patient enough to wait to photograph everything. We did the Za'atar Gruyère Croissant, chocolate croissant, the cheese biscuit item they had (don't remember exact name) and the sfogliatelle. I'm in search of the best croissant in DC, so I regret not getting the regular croissant on this visit, but the chocolate croissant gave me an idea of what to expect. Buttery, flaky, crispy, with just the perfect amount of sweetness. The typical chocolate croissant was my personal favorite. When we asked what the most popular items were, we were surprised it wasn't the more classic bakery items, but we enjoyed what we tried. We want to go back soon to try some other items as well. My friend got a coffee and also enjoyed that! This is the perfect place to stop by for a treat if you make it in time!

So literally, I just got home from Sweet Tooth Cafe & Cakes, and I went there on happenstance after…read moremy sewing class because I was so close to Sonic. We do not have one where I live, so I naturally get excited every time I'm near one, and I make it my mission to stop and get a slushie. I traditionally get the lemon slush or the lime slush. But unbeknownst to me, Sonic redid their menu. Since there isn't one close to my house, I had to update the app and sign back in. Then I tried to order my usual drink, but because it had been more than 90 days since my last visit, my previous order was gone. So I started looking through the menu, only to realize the lemon frozen slush and the lime frozen slush were no longer there. I literally spent over 30 minutes sitting in the Sonic stall scrolling through the app because you have to order through it to get the half-price slushes. Now they have these new slushes with some type of tea concentrate, and I already know I don't like green tea. I didn't want to risk paying for something I probably wouldn't enjoy, especially since there wasn't an option to sample it. So I opened my Maps app to see what was nearby. That's when I noticed that a young lady I'd been following on Instagram had her Italian ice shop close by. I thought, "Oh my goodness!" It was less than a mile away, so I drove over to Killa Italian Ice & Smoothie and picked up some lemonade and a slice of cake. After that, I thought, "Let me see what other small businesses I can support while I'm over here." I wasn't really interested in any of the other food options because they were things I could already get in Woodbridge. So I searched for bakeries and found Sweet Tooth Cafe & Cakes, just a short drive away. I walked in, and to my surprise, they had a full restaurant menu in addition to their baked goods. Let me tell you, these people were so amazingly welcoming the moment I walked in. "Hey, sis!" "Hi, welcome!" I immediately felt at home, and I honestly haven't felt that way in an establishment in a very long time. I ended up telling the young lady behind the register about my whole Sonic adventure, and she said, "Well, let me let you try my chicken curry salad." Now, I didn't have the heart to tell her that I don't like chicken salad, so I said, "Okay." Let me tell you...that chicken curry salad was banging. I was like, "Oh wow. This is good." As we kept talking, I looked over the menu and realized I didn't want my usual comfort foods like pizza, collard greens, or macaroni. I wanted to try something different. So I ordered their Chicken with Attitude with rice and cabbage. The chicken had a Middle Eastern rustic flavor. It was roasted, incredibly tender, and unlike anything I'd had before. It's definitely a different taste and probably an acquired one, but I really enjoyed it. Although I'd only had that sample of the chicken curry salad, it was so good that I ordered half a pound of it to take home, along with a piece of pound cake. Like I said at the beginning, I DO NOT EAT chicken salad, but it completely surprised me. But beyond the food, they brought me a complimentary lemonade while I was sitting there eating. It tasted so fresh, like freshly squeezed lemon with other fresh fruit over ice. It was absolutely delicious and refreshing. Everywhere throughout the restaurant were little signs about genuine kindness. The whole place just felt welcoming. Being from Alabama, I grew up with Southern hospitality. You make eye contact, greet people, and make them feel at home. That's not meant to discredit businesses in DC, Maryland, or Virginia. This area is a melting pot of people from all over the world, and culturally, not everyone expresses hospitality the same way. But when I walked into Sweet Tooth Cafe & Cakes, every single person embodied that welcoming spirit. It wasn't just one employee. It was the people behind the counter, the people coming out of the kitchen, and even those arriving for work. I just remember thinking, "Wow." I felt safe. I felt welcomed. I felt wanted. I felt at home. I felt like family. More than the food, I felt like I had found my tribe. I found my village. I honestly wish I lived closer because, if I did, I'd probably be there every day. Since moving to this area in 2009, that's the feeling I've been missing. If I could recommend Sweet Tooth Cafe & Cakes a million times over, it wouldn't just be because of the food. It would be because of the sense of belonging. It's that feeling of walking into a place where everybody knows your name, even when they don't. If you're going through something, this is the place to go. Not just to feed your belly, but to feed your soul.

The service was amazing. Very friendly and they offered lots of information about their choices…read more There is seating inside but when I went there was no AC so it was super hot inside. They had fans going to def too hot to stay. I would say everything I ordered was okay. So it's worth stopping if it's convenient but not enough to go too far out the of your way. I got jerk wings (but there was hardly any seasoning on them), peach cobbler (was mostly just peaches that tasted canned), cookies and cream cheesecake, and glazed pound cake.

Unfortunately, the location in DC has permanently closed and we were still very much in the mood for some pastries... my cousin who is French has previously sang the praises of this Lil French pastry shop, so of course I had to give it a try. I am so happy that I did because I truly believe that I have stumbled upon my new favorite pastry shop in the area! Upon walking in the smell of croissants and almonds and sweet, sweet delicacies filled my nostrils. I basically became the human version of Remy from ratatouille inhaling a delicious bouillabaisse simmering on the stove top for hours....seeing colors and flavors so bright and intoxicating I simply had to have it I walked in and my eyes were instantly attracted to so many delicious options from classics like Palmiers and Napoleons to some unique flavor combos I've never tried before combined like raspberry and pistachio. Of course, I decided to grab a little bit of everything to make an accurate assessment as a YELP Elite should!! My favorite hands-down was the Berry Millefuille. The way the pastry crumbled in my mouth with every bite, combined with the tart, fresh raspberries, and thick flavorful custard.... Was worth every penny. Honorable mentions go to the peach rosemary tart, which was so unique with the added botanical of rosemary with some fresh sweet peach slices on top and a very crunchy tart base. We all enjoyed everything we purchased! I also ordered one of their seasonal specialties, the rosemary latte with skim milk and iced. The flavors were so uniquely crafted to where you could taste everything but everything combined together for the perfect sip. The ladies who greeted us at the cash register were so patient, so kind, and so understanding of my excitement and difficulty deciding and they even helped me add on a little chocolate happy birthday rectangle to the pastry I purchased for my husband! Without a doubt, this is only the first of the many times I will visit the establishment. It was so authentic, so delicious and passed all the vibe checks even from the French side of the family. I was told I have to return when they first open to have a fresh croissant and a fresh baguette that is on par with what you would have in Paris. Even the items in the fridge were made in France and were delicious fruit nectars that were very unique- we purchased a passionfruit nectar that didn't even make it past the doors before we had completely inhaled it and purchased a lychee nectar for later. I am so excited to have learned about this establishment and believe me when I say you must run, not walk, to experience it for yourself. Note- The dine in area inside the establishment is limited to a couple small tables. Definitely not equipped for large parties and a couple outdoor seatings right outside.

I am absolutely obsessed with Catania Bakery and I absolutely love the lovely woman who owns it…read more There, I said it. And while anyone living in DC still has a chance, you need to stop by, grab some delicious bread, cannolis, and bags of almond cookies while learning some serious history about DC and hell, perhaps even about yourself. The various types of bread have a beautiful outer crispness followed by a warm softness in the center with the just a slight saltiness upfront and then a smooth sweet finish. I once got an entire loaf of bread and finished it before I got back home which was only three blocks away. It's heaven when it comes to bread and you can tell she has been doing this for a very long time. The cannolis are stunning - there is that delicate brittle crispiness of the pastry and a slight sweetness of the cream. It's the perfect cannoli. Other cannolis can be way too sweet and way too overpowering. And those almond cookies are decadent as the batter is mostly made up of crushed almonds, a little sugar, and some hints of butter followed by a whole almond on the top. They melt in your mouth. It's pure bliss. The window is very small as she is open only once per week on Saturday morning until about noon so make sure to get there. Plenty of parking around with very little risk of getting a ticket - only watch out, this is a rough neighborhood. This is no cute boutique, and certainly isn't a pretty place and I suspect its heyday expired literally about a half-a-century ago as it turns out, all of the North Capitol Street Corridor, some of H Street and much of what we consider NoMa was a thriving Italian community which could have survived as DC's own 'Little Italy' had it not been for the wholescale corruption, the numerous fires, and systematic neglect that plagued the city for decades to come which effectively turned the entire area into a huge slum which is only now recovering. And Catania Bakery is the only surviving evidence of that as very little has been done with the interiors and the exterior and the equipment is literally the same used fifty years ago. You will hear many stories from the owner and she will keep you standing on your feet for a long time giving you plenty of history. And it turns out, she knew family of mine who lived in the neighborhood about 40 years ago when I gave her my last name - I was shocked as I knew exactly the family member she referred to but had no idea they lived only three houses away from mine. She will talk your ear off and tell you about everything and anything and for these super low prices for legendary bread and pasties, it's absolutely worth it.
