Pro Cakes is really good! I really love that they bake their cookies with brown sugar instead of white sugar because it is not as super sweet. It is just right! Their prices are amazing and the size and quality of cookies are so good. I got the $5 bag of 8 cookies (2 pb, 2 snicker, 2 oatmeal and 2 butter crunch). They are so soft and moist. So I'm headed to Rivertown AMC for a movie in Oxon Hill, cruising down after a good dinner, and I think: "You know what would make this night perfect? Dessert." I hop on Yelp, scroll through a few options, and BOOM--Pro Cakes pops up. Black-owned bakery? Great prices? Glowing reviews? Say less. Now, I'll admit--I didn't realize it was in Iverson Mall. And truthfully, if I had known, I might've kept scrolling (don't judge me). I've managed to avoid Iverson Mall for almost 30 years, but something said, "Go anyway." And I'm so glad I listened. Pulling up to the mall was like stepping into a time capsule. It's old, no doubt, but surprisingly clean and well-kept. There's no grand entrance--just vibes. I walked through Forman Mills, went upstairs, wandered a bit (shoutout to the two MIA directories ), but eventually found Pro Cakes tucked among the small shops like a hidden gem. And trust me, worth every step. I grabbed the $5 cookie bag--sampled eight different cookies (felt like more, honestly), paid easily with Apple Pay, and was back on the road in no time. I didn't even make it to the theater before I cracked open the bag... and let me tell you--these cookies were ridiculous. Soft, flavorful, rich, and did not need a glass of milk (but wouldn't hurt either ). Every bite was a winner. They nailed texture, flavor, and size. Just straight-up homemade love in a cookie bag. I saw slices of cake, cupcakes, and even pies calling my name from behind the glass. And yes, I'll be back for those too. Pro Cakes is that spot. It is nice to support Black owned establishments in the area especially when they are competing with other establishments that serve the same product or service nearby. I have nostalgia growing up and visiting Iverson Mall and eating at the Pizza Parlor and going to Macy's when it was Hecht's. Little did I know that the snickerdoodle cookies were a thing here. Sure, the area might seem sketchy to a lot of people, and that the mall is a shell of its former self and never had been one of the marquee malls, but I do like that the place provides job opportunities for Black youth in a society that otherwise does not like to provide those opportunities (Black youth unemployment is highest among all groups statistically and is observed when out and about) and that the business is Black owned. The sweet potato pie is tasty, might be a little sugary and sweet (cannot eat too much do not want diabetes) but it has an addictive taste and flavor. Not a big fan of the cupcakes as some were advertised as one flavor, but that was just near the icing, the actual cupcake was more vanilla. The snickerdoodles are tasty and I can see why Stevie Wonder even came to stop by. I would say that the sweet potato pie and the cookies are the strongest selling points. Customer service for the most part is nice, have had few exceptions with poorly trained staff, but I noticed they worked in the back. The young ladies who work at the counter though are usually pleasant and kind. Some items can be pricy, but it is not like I come regularly for different reasons. If you are around the National Harbor area, it does not hurt to stop by and take a pie and some cookies to go. I do like the recipes for how they taste. From Oreo, snickerdoodle, strawberry, and chocolate cupcakes to their sweet potato pound cake, everything was just blame delicious. Some of the flavored cakes weren't as moist as I would prefer, but no biggie from me as that is just my preference. General consenses from my taste testing family was that the frosting was a little too thick, but that didn't stop them from getting punished! Ha! In the end we did not end up using this company for our cake; I found the process of attempting to order cakes in person as difficult. The day that we arrived, it didn't appear to be busy, but not much effort was made into the sale. I suppose that was because they preferred to take online orders? Not sure. Later, I contacted them via email in an effort to order another cake for another event and was not pleased with the process. Despite providing my desired order in advance(over a week), I was told that I would need to come to the location 72 hours in advance and provide a deposit with my requested cake, then return with the remaining funds on the day of to obtain my cake. I suggested another form of payment- online so that I could avoid going to the location twice, and was told it would incur an additional. Honestly, I don't have the time to run back and forth, so I did not proceed further. By no means should this place be called "Pro Cakes". I can't believe that there are some many good reviews. I'm going to assume that some these people just don't know any better.
