There's a large parking lot provided for cars--about 2 blocks away, at 36th and Shepherd Streets. It's a short walk up a gradual hill, through a Mt. Rainier neighborhood, but sure beats parking on the street. Just look for the signs. This market can get busy however everyone is super polite. There's lots of picnic tables available. Sometimes there's live music, but there's always music. In fact, when the music is playing, the vendors can sell, but when the music stops, then the market is over. It's open for 4 hours only, Saturdays, 9 AM to 1 PM, and those hours do fly by. I almost hesitate to write about it (want to keep it to myself in a way) but do desire that it succeeds!

I just love this spot. I've been coming here over the years to get my fill of Pennsylvania Dutch…read moretreats, which allows me to get from DC without having to drive all the way to Pennsylvania. This spot has so many wonderful food stands. Upon walking in, you can pick up a cart to explore all of the stands. My kids love this place as much as me since you can find so much variety. Our first stop is the very busy Amish soft pretzel stand. My kids love the standard soft pretzel dipped in melted butter and topped with rock salt. My personal favorite are the stuffed soft pretzels like the pretzels stuffed with roast beef and cooper sharp cheddar. Nothing tastes better! There are also many other stands that offer fresh produce, meats, cheeses and baked goods. I particularly like Bieler's Donuts, the same place you'll find packed lines in Philadelphia right here. It's such a fun place and my kids love it. But most importantly, this is dad's spot!

In the most visually-exciting sequence of Director/Writer Jalmari Helander's 2025 film Sisu: Road…read moreto Revenge, three Soviet Ilyushin II-2 Shturmovik ground-attack planes attempt to bring down the KraZ-214 armored, military-transport truck driven by the hero who single-handedly turned the tide for the Finns in the earlier film and in the sequel, set in 1946. Using his wits, his ingenuity, and unparalleled levels of skill and perseverance, Aatami Korpi, who earns the moniker of "the man who cannot die," escapes not just bombs and machine gun fire but a plane deployed as a missile. And yet, the most moving moment of the film is not found in one of its many arresting action sequences but in a single line of dialogue, spoken by one of six Finnish men, who, along with one teenager and one boy, carrying hatchets, axes, and tools, interrupts the battle-finished Korpi's work on his new home to ask in Finnish, subtitled in English, "We thought you might need some help?" Speechless and shaking with relief and joy, Korpi watches the strangers get to work on his roof, walls, and foundation. That level of kindness, assistance, delight, joy, skill, and service can be seen in every vendor at the Dutch Country Market Thursdays through Saturdays at 9701 Fort Meade Rd in Laurel, MD. Whether it is homemade pretzels, pasta salads, chili, produce, meats, cheeses, popcorn, donuts, or varieties of dark chocolate, candy, or fudge you seek, you will find plenty to whet your appetite. Mind you, most, if not all, of everything contains zero preservatives. Our advice is to buy what you can enjoy soon or share your purchases with company before it's too late.

Life is a Cab-array…read more So lettuce entertain you with some peachy produce puns, because they have berry delicious fruits and veggies at the Dupont Circle Fresh Farm Market. Visited the Sunday only market with someone berry punny who is not melon-choly, but we did sample the melons, berries, peaches, plums and more. The peaches were so juicy! Definitely get a bag of those. A few did not make it back home! The heirloom tomatoes were so beautiful and the cucumbers are so crisp. So yummy! My daughter got a fruit tart that was so pretty and a peach agua fresca. So refreshing when the heat index was 107°. So hot, hot, hot. The market also has loaves of bread, amazing beet hummus and other dips, the most beautiful bouquets of flowers and jars filled with honey and jams. Too bad that the jelly was not airplane compliant or I definitely would have grabbed a jar to bring back home. A great fresh farmers market that spreads out over several city blocks. Perfect for a trip on a sunny summer Sunday morning.

Gone are the days in which Miller Farms, a mainstay and provider of fresh produce and home-baked pies and baked goods, was joined only by 1-3 other vendors. In 2020, this farmers market conjures reminisces of a small county fair, with spectacular new vendors including Barbie's Doggie Bakery (specializing in chicken & cheese empanadas, blueberry and apple treats, even strawberry & banana frozen yogurt, all homemade, all for dogs); Tee Cee's Boutique (every other week selling comfortable, cotton and polyester, homemade masks for adults and kids and kids at heart, like my wife and me, with designs featuring crimson dragons, Pokémon, and critters of all kinds); and Grater Cater (a food truck selling the best grilled salmon I have ever tasted, along with green beans and Mac & Cheese for sides). Add to those vendors 3 Peas Handmade Soaps, Unity Coffee (for ice coffee to soothe the fearsome family members craving caffeine), and I Got Your Flavor lemonades (including strawberry, mango, and others!); and you have a Saturday destination worth visiting every week between 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

When at the Thursday Riverdale Park and Sunday Greenbelt markets they are $5-$7? I guess being the only vendor means they charge outrageous prices. May as well go to Whole Foods if you're going to pay that much for something and get guaranteed quality. I hadn't stopped there in a couple of years, this was my last time. I'll just wait for Sundays where there are more reputable vendors.
