I went for the freebie burger deal they had a few weeks ago. Hey, that's why they do it. They bring you in and hope you like it so much that you come back or, at least, tell people about it. I would come back BUT for the price point. They're in Bloomingdale's and have rent to pay. I get it, but it's a bit too rich for my income stream right now. My burger was excellent. I ordered it medium-well and that's how I got it. The accompanying fries were great. They were thin and tasty. I didn't order a drink because I was meeting up with a bunch of people to drive out to the Hamptons. I stuck with an iced tea. In spite of that, the bartender was really friendly. I appreciated that and showed it in my tip because I ate at the bar. My income level will go up and, if I'm nearby, I'll go back. However, there are a lot of places in NYC that make a good burger and they're cheaper. For me, the price point is the only deal breaker. But that won't be a deal breaker for long. ;) read more

OH MY GOD Major kudos. There are no words for the one of juiciest, mouthwatering, most tender burgers I've ever tasted in this city. It's interesting that I've only seen them at Bloomingdale's, and I wish they were a chain. Had lunch here on a Saturday afternoon and was seated by the most gracious waitress ever. The sweet potato fries were average at best, but the burger is HUGE and made up for that. As far as the space, it's small and cozy, with a colorful ambiance. I loved flip! Four HIGHLY enthusiastic stars. I never expected i'd find a great burger place in the basement of a department store, but this was a fantastic lunch, once you navigate yourself down down down through bloomingdales to find it. Find yourself a treasure map and make the trek cause its really worth it. Its surprisingly roomy, very bright and very comfortable, and the menu is fairly simple...mostly burgers with a few alternatives. You build your own burger with 3 different kinds of beef burgers available as well as veggie, turkey, and a few other non-beef options. There are a number of sauce options, cheeses, toppings and several different delicious bread choices. Three is the magic number at flip, and we tried all three beef burgers, short rib, brisket, and waygu. First of all-- you need to be there with two close friends, and do the bite and pass method so you get to try all three burgers. There's no better way to do this. Okay, so....two of them were great, and one was just ok, but most likely, that was because it was overcooked. The Waygu was our favorite by far-- so flavorful! The leaner short rib cut was very different, and pretty damned good too. The brisket was the overcooked one, and Im willing to give it one more chance. The side sauces were incredibly fresh and delicious. I had the pesto and it was bright and green and tasted like it had been made minutes before it was brought to the table. The Thai Peanut was equally impressive. My favorite thing about the burgers is that they were relatively thin which i love. Thick enough to be filling, and so that they could be cooked medium rare, but not so thick that you cant easily get your mouth around them-- in fact, one of the bread options is rye bread, and the burger would fit nicely. They also had great lemonade, and milk shakes that looks UNBELIEVABLE! Next time..... My only complaint was the fries. The skinny fries were actually too skinny-- almost like potato sticks, i hate steak fries, and the chubby fries were too chubby. The only fries that were just the right size were the sweet potato fries, but we didnt order those. Again...next time. Also, im putting the mac n cheese on the next time list because it looked fantastic. I swear i felt like i was hanging my head over everyone else's table to see what they were having!! Oh and the service was terrific. Our waitress was sweet, on the ball, and was always there when we needed her without being annoying or hovery. Oh and i almost forgot...they have the cutest little dessert sliders of mini black and white cookies filled with ice cream. Seriously tiny (IM TALKING SMALL!) but adorable...and there are only two of them, but if you just need a lil bitty sweet-- its a nice touch. So...my picks...grab two of your dearest friends, and head down for a waygu burger, medium rare, onion roll, sweet potato fries, side of pesto sauce, and make sure your friends try the other burgers and maybe some mac n cheese. Getting to Flip is a bit of a challenge; no signage outside. You have to go in the Bloomingdales entrance (Lexington side is easiest), wind your way past the handbag department, down some stairs and through Ralph Lauren, down a hall, then in the middle of a sub-level. Once there, the setting is modern-comfortable, and the burgers are quite good. They can make them however you like, but my preference is for the Wagyu,, which is more traditional. Lots of options with fries (regular, thick, with cheese, sweet potato, etc.), and the mac & cheese is phenomenal. Wear your fat pants. read more

Kobe Beef in America, Don't Fall For It. Update: FL!P closes at 7:30pm. I went to FL!P with Dice K. on Friday. I ordered the $15 American-raised Kobe beef mix Pat La Frieda burger. I suckered myself into ordering it with the slim chance that it might be wagyu quality. Sorry to say, it was not. The patty was obviously frozen, it had that freezer texture to it. My colleague and I headed straight over!! So I work a few blocks from Bloomingdales and have recently been going to Flip about once a week. I normally wouldn't take the time to write a review here but Flip is so delicious that I feel I must share it with other people. The burgers are absolutely amazing. The fries are fabulous. The shakes are visually amazing and taste great. The sides are incredible. I can't say enough great things about Flip. If you find me sitting alone at the counter of Flip, don't disturb me because I'm probably in a state of heaven while downing every Flip burger with fries and shake. Why isn't flip more known?!? I think this place is such a little gem! The Mac and cheese is one of the best in the city and worth every calorie. I have ordered burgers and sandwiches and have enjoyed every one of them. The portions are very large, I would suggest sharing an entree if you have a small appetite. I'm not flippin' crazy about Flip, it was just a-okay. Prices are definitely what you would expect for a cafe located in Bloomingdales but still it's just burgers and fries people! That being said, I think the experience is for haute burgers in a chic atmosphere. The decor seems akin to a stylized airport lounge- blonde wood chairs, clean white floors and bright fluorescent lighting. My hubby had the much touted benedict burger, a wagyu blend on brioche bread, topped with canadian bacon and hollandaise sauce. Holy heart attack on a bun! The wagyu blend was a little dry for what I expected and while the combo was deliciously greasy it was definitely not worth the hefty price tag. I had custom burger based on the hearty meat blend (Flip gives you the option of customizing your patty based on different blends of meat) and ordered it with a few select garnishes. My burger was well formed came cooked medium (a shade above my request of med rare) and well, was rather devoid of seasoning. Overall another underachieving burger given the price point. Steak fries were nice and our side of onion rings were bonafide goodness as they were thick cut rings covered in a nice crumb coating. We took advantage of free ice cream on offer, one of the store clerks had offered it as a promotion and it was a sweet ending to a ho hum pricey lunch. read more

The Zorburger was good- it def. was cooked a bit on the rarer side which I appreciated. It's not your average turkey burger with cranberry sauce (though I have zip zero complaints about that style-so thankgivingly yummy) but instead done plain with some feta cheese, a pickle and brioche bun. The bun could have been a bit more grilled; and but the pickle was done nice and crispy. The feta cheese was really a good touch and I would have never put two and two together. The salad that came on the side was very so so. The dressing (which I presume is mainly olive oil and lemon juice- I know cause this is my fave combo) was delish. But the lettuce quality (iceberg, blahhh) is was baad. And my FAVORITE thing of all time in a Greek Salad- a graph leaf was as stale as shit. Tasted my cardboard not the gooey rice I like to call home. All in all, great free burger. Great $16 burger? Meh. Prolly not. I'm good with Better Burger NYC. A burger place in the men's department of Bloomies. Who doesn't like to get fatty food after power shopping. I like the build your own burger aspect of Flip. Their are endless combinations and they cook the burger perfectly to your liking. I like the wagyu beef with pepper jack cheese the best. Their mac and cheese and fries are also pretty solid. To begin with, I've eaten here, just to be clear. Lunch for two on Saturday, pretty busy, sat at the bar. Fun to contemplate all the different options you have on the menu: there are 6 or 7 patty choices (brisket, short rib, wagyu beef, lamb and merguez, etc.), about the same number of bun options, maybe 10 "sauce" choices (like olive tapenade or garlic aioli), plus your cheeses, bacon, fried egg, etc. We had a lamb burger with olive, mushrooms and goat cheese on a caramelized onion and sage brioche, plus a short rib burger with onions and American cheese on the same type of brioche. Both burgers were above average, but neither was a home run. Good beef to bun ratio; cooked more or less as ordered; lamb burger was definitely flavorful, as were the sauces/toppings. Given the pedigree of the proprietor and the promise of the menu, I'd say both under delivered vs. expectations however. At $20 per person, this is an expensive place to "grab" lunch - at 3x the price of a Shack Burger, there is no way these burgers are 3x better. Worth checking out if you are in the area and either love burgers or love to try new places. I wouldn't seek to go back, but I wouldn't resist it either I suppose. Service was extremely rough - our server apparently completely forgot to submit our order and made up ridiculous lies to try to cover for the ~45 minutes it took ("yours takes longer cause they have to make it by hand" for example). Also, the hostesses and waitstaff think it is appropriate to shout back and forth over guests while they discuss people or their hours. I have NOT factored this displeasure into my review however, as they've only been open for 6 days and I trust this will be corrected promptly. The service starting with seating was slow. Blame the missing hostess; thank the manager for coming out. The menu gives you plenty of options, from ciabatta bread, roll, caramelized onion and asiago cheese bread, and other fine specialties. Toppings range from the traditional cheeses and veggies. ~$16 for the burgers and ~$6 sides, you can get the fries served any number of ways. The menu pretentiously reminds you that everything is extra (except the first topping on your burger which is gratis, after that its $1.50 each additional). The side Greek salad on my Zorburger was disappointing at best. It was nothing more than shredded iceberg lettuce with some chopped red peppers, prepackaged feta cubes, pitted black olives, and one grape leaf, The Zorburger comes is feta and black olive tapenade on a carmelized onion roll. The olive tapenade favored one spot on the bottom bun, and again the prepackaged feta made a repeat appearance. The turkey patty itself was juicy, but flaky, thin, and buried in the bread. Would def say Rare does it MUCH better. Also, with my food allergy to meat, I can easily tell how clean the grill is. Alas, I didn't find it that clean here. It seems the regulars here work in Bloomingdales, hankering for a quick bite and hangout spot. The talk on the street says the sides are the best, which makes me question the choice of Flip for a name, and the chance I'd be back to try those sides. We'll see... read more

If it's not obvious, this is in the basement of Bloomingdales. I walked in, sat at the bar, and ordered a burger. Simple order, This bun, that patty, with salad. The bartender seemed tired and dejected, as if he was disappointed I didn't order a drink or more toppings. When the burger arrived it was the wrong bun, right patty, but no salad. Can't say the burger tasted amazing either. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, but not worth $12 - especially considering it took 20 minutes to come from the kitchen. I read about Flip on another website...should have Yelped before I leaped. This place was just okay. It is tucked away behind the Men's dept. at Bloomy's and that alone makes it kinda cool. It is fun to people watch there...so many beautiful people in such a small space. It is a little loud during lunch so everyone ups the volume to be heard. The way you order burgers is fun. There are several columns: one for type of meat, bread, toppings, etc. I ordered the "hearty" on a nice onion roll. It was good but not great...not as moist as it should be and had gristle (the horror!) That is just one thing I cannot tolerate in a burger! The aoli was just seasoned mayo...like the kind I make. The sweet potato string fries were good. So for cuteness and the nice waitress I am giving the place a 3-star. read more

Been wanting to try Flip for the longest time as my pretty traveling companion LOVES it. And since she was in need of copious amounts of kitchen supplies only procured at Bloomie's, we went on a shopping trip. Flip is a burger joint, tucked into the men's side of the building. It's a very small seating area, accompanied by a bar. Upon walking into the place, we weren't greeted warmly, nor were we seated quickly--even with the numerous empty tables. Once seated, Michael was our very personable server. We ordered...I built a burger of my own and my partner in crime had a salad with a burger on top. I requested a side of steak fries with garlic aioli. Um, wow. Holy French fries, Batman. I've never had such good steak fries. Burger was good...standard fare. But the mozzarella I requested was FRESH MADE. No shredded bag cheese here. Bacon was good, thick pieces, too. I ordered a chocolate milkshake that was quite the tasty addition to my meal. We really liked the place. We really liked our server. We really disliked the surly bartender and the Bloomingdale's associate/manager who walked in, sat down, loudly announced he was our server's "immediate superior" and demanded the associate menu. My companion and I looked at each other and said, "jerk", simultaneously. When in Bloomies and craving a burger, go here. You will enjoy it. Just don't take the surly bartender to heart. read more

I understand your in Bloomingdales in midtown manhattan but there is no reason for a cheeseburger to be $16 ala cart at some kind burger joint. I can see having a $16 cheeseburger at a high end Restaurant but not here. #2 the people that work there do not know anything about the menu. My wife is on a no carb diet, and she asked if she could get her burger with a side of veggies, the server looked at us like we where nuts and then said "I don't know if we have that" ?!?! Huh?? #3 the food isn't properly cooked We ordered our burgers well done they came out bloody. My fries where sooo soggy and my wife's side salad looked yellow instead of green. It's appropriate that Flip is hidden, er, situated in the men's department on the lower level of Bloomingdale's. The concept is a bespoke burger, where you select the raw materials and it is tailored just for you. First, the Pat LaFrieda meat. You can pick from three different beef options: short rib, brisket or wagyu. Or you can have lamb. Or turkey. Or veggie. Then the bread, from the classic sesame seed bun (who remembers that old joke about identifying Ronald McDonald naked?) to rye bread, brioche and a handful of others. Next it's the toppings: a dazzling array of cheese, condiment, sauce, and vegetal options. And the sides - four (count 'em) different types of fries or onion rings. Since burger preferences are intensely personal - determined by nostalgia and experience - I think customizing them to this extent is a stroke of genius. Me, I tend toward mushroom swiss burgers, and had a short rib one today on a hot pepper Asiago bun. My Spanish friend who doesn't have a history with American burgers, went for a brisket blend topped with a tandoori onion ring and cheddar cheese. He could just as easily have combined blue cheese and avocado, or bread and butter pickles with BBQ sauce. The permutations and combinations are endless. My onion rings and his "chubby" fries were both greaseless and tasty as hell, and our burgers were cooked perfectly. There are some annoyances built into the Flip experience. The nearest ladies room is two floors up and a seemingly kilometer away. The service is very slow but accurate. It might take 10 minutes to get a glass of water, but it comes eventually. And in a weird logistical glitch, the restaurant was out of beef when we arrived. Soon boxes stenciled with Pat LaFrieda were being carried through the dining room in an endless stream. We stopped in for a quick lunch during a break and were seated immediately. It was rather empty around 11:45, but did start filling up after 12. My veggie burger was a Dr. Praeger burger which I can't complain about since I love those. I had it on top of a Caesar salad, which was a surprisingly good combination. The coffee was also excellent and they actually frothed the milk that came with it! The chubby fries were pretty good, as well, and had a nice, crispy shell. This little hidden gem tucked into the Mens Designer department at Bloomingdales consistently cranks out one of the city's best burgers. Somehow, they have managed to do this without any p.r. hype, crowdsourcing nonsense or advertising. Those of us who work in the area or at Bloomberg are well aware and come here often. The sweet brisket burger with skinny fries here is a thing of great beauty. The service is pleasant and on point. The place has little of the tourist infiltration and long lines one finds nearby and the prices are reasonable. Heck, they even crank out New York's best veggie burger, served with pesto on their home made naan. For those off their diets Desserts and shakes are also excellent. Avoid the salads. read more

I think that I can sum this burger up in one word. "Wow!" Who expects to get even a decent burger in Bloomingdale's? Seriously, I couldn't believe this, but it was out of this world. I had the "Refined" burger, which is wagyu American kobe. It was the right blend of juicy, but not greasy. I had pickle relish (which was awesome), hickory smoked bacon (at least above average), and American cheese (because I'm boring at heart). The fries were shoe string fries that were very good at first, but didn't maintain their charm throughout the lunch. I also had hot chocolate, which got a laugh out of both the waiter and the guy that I was eating lunch with, but was very good. I'm certainly going to be coming back here. Also couldnt tell the difference between a "kobe" and a regular but the lamb burger was good, and so were the options. but the best thing here was the onion rings. crispy big rings. id go back just for that! read more

I want to review the service...the food was fine. Katherine was amazing. A throw back to a time when servers really cared about your experience and tended to all your needs. She had personality, performed her job admirably and even successes in making a temper tantrum throwing child smile. The kid was screaming splayed on the floor. The zorburger I had is very good but it is on the expensive side. I think the burger from Shake Shack is just as good as the burger from Flip and it cost less. I can't wait to go back to Shake Shack. I forgot to mention that the waitress was very nice to let us stay an extra 30 minutes when it was about to close. One suggestion don't forget to call Flip to see what time the place close. Not impressed. I have become more and more dscerning about my burgers over the years, which is both a blessing and a curse. While it makes me seek (and find) perfection in a bun and a meat patty, it has also made me somewhat hard to please where it comes to the American classic that is a burger. No complaints about the ambiance, the noise level, or the service. However, the burger and dessert both fell short of my expectations. The bun to burger ratio was decidedly off and the caramelized onions were overtly greasy. Also, toasting the bun slightly would've enhanced the flavor. Meat could have been seasoned better, too. I do give them a couple points for getting the meat temperature just right, though. The dessert -- salted caramel ice cream -- belonged in the '70s. It came buried under mounds of whipped cream and sprinkles. On digging deep, I finally found the scoops that were simply plain ol' vanilla with sticky and cloying caramel sauce drizzled on top. Sorry folks, but salted caramel ice cream ice-cream this is NOT. read more

The fries were clearly once frozen (I could see some freezer burn). The presentation was bleh. Service is fine - not slow but also not super welcoming. Was at Bloomingdale's the other day and stopped for lunch. Had the lamb burger. Properly cooked, fries were decent, tasted nice. But it was one of their "special" burgers, and it didn't seem very balanced to me--lamb patty with some melty sauce and an onion ring on top, served on a pita. Meant to evoke a middle eastern sandwich--so were were the veggies? I requested some tomatoes (which were nice and fresh) and those alone added a lot to the burger, imo. It was a fair amount of food, but $30 including tip for a burger and iced tea seems a bit expensive for a place in the low-ceilinged basement of Bloomie's. Absolutely worst place to eat. Service was extremely Slow. It took almost 30 minute to get food. The restaurant was half empty. Food was below average. Rather expensive for the quality. They have mandatory rule which is minimum $15 per customer during lunch hours. Also, they automatically charge tip and have balls to ask for additional tip. The waitress screwed up the check, so I asked her to correct it. She gave me a copy of receipt showing correct amount. Wow! As a person that loves a good burger, I thought I would check this place out. I hoped it would be great as I live close by, and there are not any really outstanding burgers near my apartment. The only other good burger in the 59th/Lex area is at the David Burke in the Box at Bloomingdales, and maybe the one at PJ Clarkes or Blackstone's over on 55th. Otherwise you are trekking down to BLT Burger, ShakeShack I can say emphatically, that this place exceeded my expectations in food quality, cleanliness, service/friendliness. The ingredients for the main component (the burger) are wide and varied from Short Rib, Brisket, Tuna, Turkey, and so on. I tried the "Brisket" burger on the Brioche bun (many bread choices here too!), which is fabulously prepared. Of course there are topping choices including the assortment of various cheeses, sauces, etc. Side note... Very good choice of Beers, and the fry options are excellent. Try the skinny fries. Of course they have some yummy milkshakes, and deserts also. I went with the Valhrona chocolate cupcake and was not disappointed. It is a bit tough to find the place in the basement of Bloomingdales as they are doing a phased store remodel. But its worth the effort. Last comment. Our server Nicole was excellent, helpful in explaining the menu, and she and the entire crew seemed to enjoy working there. Will be back... But will need to go to the gym more often! read more

The place was filthy. The floor was full of fries, paper, bread crumbs, etc. the servers there are a piece of work. The bread was dry, and they forgot my fries and the appetizer. The hostess was complaining loudly to the manager about her leaving to drop off something, or something like that, and everybody was witnessing that disgusting scene while eating. I have been to this restaurant no less than half a dozen times since it reopened and half of the time my order is wrong. If you are too cheap to hire enough staff to get the job done, do not open. Last time I will visit. read more
