Flax & Kale is a local chain that offers a variety of plant-based fare. They market themselves as a flexitarian restaurant and they truly were with 80% of the menu being plant-based while offering fish as well. The restaurant itself is gorgeous. Well-lit, wide space, and beautiful calming aesthetic to take you away from the touristy Las Ramblas right nearby. I went straight for Teresa's Favorite Kale Salad (€12) and their Mango & Avocado Tartar (€11), only to realize the latter was essentially already included in my salad. The large bowl of salad had a mix of kale (duh), tomatoes, sprouts, avocado, nori sheets, mango, and radishes. It was fresh, delicious, and much needed after a week of eating nonstop paella. Service was friendly but a bit slow. We waited nearly 30 minutes for our food to come out even though it wasn't busy, but that may just be the Spanish culture. read more

Such a vibey spot! Dim lights, candles on the table, clean airy space yet intimate, open kitchen and plants everywhere! We went for dinner (they also have brunch). I love how everything is labeled with allergens. My sister and I split four veggie dishes - roasted broccoli with zhug sauce and pomegranates (a unique orange sauce that was so good; the broccoli had amazing char and the pomegranates was a perfect juicy crunch) - roasted cabbage pie (not actually a pie lol, I think the translation is more like cabbage steak. This was a light orange sauce that said chipotle as well but I didn't taste any heat. The cheese was divine and the crunch of the pecans was perfect. I loved all dishes but this was my "least" favorite - roasted boniatos aka sweet potatoes (this came out steaming hot and was soo good. The yogurt tahini sauce was creamy and nutty and once again good crunch with the pomegranates; yes there's a theme. The sweet potatoes were not crunch themselves so the Poms were a great addition - the star of the show for me was the berejena jackfruit, which had eggplant glazed in miso with the jackfruit, a chili jam, peanuts (see the crunch theme), and more. This was a lovely pescatarian restaurant--even in the winter, it felt like we were dining in a warm greenhouse. We had excellent hummus with house-made pita bread, mushrooms with cured egg yolk, falafels, activated charcoal focaccia, charcoal and smoked eggplant ravioli, and mushroom gnocchi. All of it was delicious. The service was incredibly kind and patient. We were in a group of eight with four kids, a mix of locals and visitors. (Reservations a must.) They put us in a closed off room with glass windows, so we still could enjoy the restaurant ambiance while making our own conversation. While we were able to communicate in a mix of Spanish and Catalan, the menu is in English and the servers could speak in very good English. read more

Flax and kale is a delicious restaurant that was super close to my hotel in Barcelona. It is a huge restaurant with two stories and delicious food. They also offer retail of their delicious Kombucha and cold pressed juices. Their menu is extensive with healthier options and many vegan and vegetarian dishes. The menu comes in three languages Catalan, English and Spanish. Upstairs on their Terrance there are seats surrounding their farm to table garden as well. I got the salmon sliders with fresh cut sweet potatoes in a fry shape and their kombucha. I actually went back 3x during my stay for their kombucha to go and everything I tried was delicious but my favorite was the cola flavor. read more

Spain is synonymous with tapas. But sometimes you got to listen to your body and eat some greens! Having had my body 98% composed of tapas for nearly a week, I was in need of some serious veggies. Not going to lie, I honestly thought this was going to be some disappointing hipster place. Saw the picture of the restaurant and figured the high ratings were due to the decor and non-foodies. But I'm happy that wasn't the case! We stopped in for lunch. Had the option of sitting on the terrace or inside. Due to the heat wave, we opted for the air condition indoor seating. The decor is cute. But if it was cooler, I highly recommend choosing the terrace! Took a peek when I headed upstairs to the restroom at the end of our meal and instantly wished we chose the terrace. (Side note: the restroom is cute! Yes you read that right, haha.) The waiters were friendly. Even though we didn't know Spanish, language wasn't an issue since the staff were fluent in English as well. My biggest gripe was that an extra kombucha was brought to us, even though we didn't order it. I could've easily sent it back, but I drank it anyway since my gut needed some TLC. Now onto the food! Not only is the presentation visually pleasing, it's also a delight on the taste buds. All the dishes here has a clean and light taste to it. The Teresa's Favourite Kale Salad was filling. Added the anchovy option. Was my first time trying anchovy and it was actually pretty good! Nothing horrible like I had imagined. The kale and cherry tomatoes were refreshing. And this also applies to the pasta as well, the Supertagliatelle. And for those who never had spirulina, you can't taste it in the pasta. The salmon that came with it was perfectly seasoned and well done. Definitely don't skip out on getting this dish. Now I wish there was a Flax & Kale here in LA. Healthy, innovative restaurants are popular in places like California & Hawaii (both places I've called home), but Flax & Kale simply does it better! I'd be so bold as to even say maybe even THE BEST! My husband and I were in Barcelona for a short 33 hours to attend an FC Barcelona match at Camp Nou before returning to Paris than back to California, and thanks to Yelp, we discovered this wonderful restaurant! Not only does Teresa Carles and her team do delicious, creative healthy cuisine well, they have been pioneers in the health food industry long before it even became "hip" in California (since 1979)! We were so impressed, the next day we went to the Flax & Kale Passage AND stopped by Teresa's juice bar to fuel our bodies up for a day of turbo sightseeing before our flight! I could go on and on about how impressive their menu is, how delicious and creative their appetizers, entrées, desserts, and beverages are, and how beautiful the restaurant is, from their multi-level seating areas to their intimate private dining rooms, and the outdoor garden patio! The whole experience blew us away despite the fact that this type of cuisine (i.e. flexitarian/vegetarian/vegan/plant-based) is normal for us! Our dinner highlights: * Grilled Watermelon * Funghi Coconut Toast * Roasted Carrots & Avocado Salad * Supertagliatelle * Coco Masala Chai Ice Cream (Yes, somehow we made room for dessert as we couldn't pass up trying their plant-based healthy ice creams!) My roommate and I fell in love as soon as we walked into Flax & Kale. The place is huge, with plenty of booths and tables in a modern space. It was a weekend morning, so there were quite a lot of customers. I ordered the "Rainbow Coconut Milk Parfait". Just from the name, I was expecting top notch presentation. Sure enough, I received a very colourful bowl of blue yogurt and plenty of toppings. Coffee was also solid. What impressed me most about this establishment was its attention to dietary restrictions. My roommate is gluten intolerant, and usually finds it quite difficult to identify an appropriate dish to eat. Here, the menus clearly indicated whether or not each item was gluten-free, plant-based, etc. What made this review 4 stars instead of 5 was the aftermath. I am not usually intolerant to any foods, but something in my brunch had my stomach upset for the rest of the day. Could have just been a fluke. I think I will come back to try something more savoury, as everything here seems super healthy :) read more

I ordered the açaí bowl and avocado toast. The açaí bowl was sooo delicious! It was filled with mixed berries, granola, and some flax seeds. Don't be fooled, the portion may look small, but this bad boy will fill you up! I also ordered the avocado toast, which was a hefty portion as well. This restaurant is way bigger than I thought when I first walked in. All of their fresh ingredients are exposed and you can even see their pantry on the second floor. Options are locally grown, fresh, and even with Vegan options. I got the Symbiotic Passion Kombucha and the Healthy Eggs Royale. It was the perfect brunch and maybe the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had. The eggs were runny to perfection, the salmon was not salty or fishy tasting, and the Vegan curry sauce they used really punched in the flavor with every bite! As I finish my meal, I feel like I could eat more, but as I let the thought settle, my stomach finally communicates with my brain and says it's full. Every bite felt like I was eating something fresh and healthy. Like the sayings on their wall, I ate better, am leaving happier, and really do feel like I'll live longer! The service here is on point as well. The waitress was very helpful in explaining the menu and giving me suggestions. Everyone here is friendly and has a big smile on their face, which makes me feel like everyone is happy to work here. Good food, great atmosphere, happy employees this is really an ideal place to get food. I'm sure their dinner menu is just as great. This place came recommended by a friend living in Barcelona when my travel crew mentioned we were craving some veggie based meals. I have to say I was not dissapointed. When you walk in the space is HUGE and very chic looking. Mak note they actually have two floors and the upstairs is a gorgeous patio area. If you can be seated up there I definitely recommend it. There were a ton of menu choices but I settled on the "No Digas Tacos" and one of their green juices. Less than 20 minutes later I was presented with a delicious looking, albeit DIY taco platter. It was nice to assemble them how I wanted and while everything is good just now the gauc is phenomenal. I couldn't get enough. That said these tacos translated to $20 which is pretty steep even by my bougie LA vegan food standards. Granted no one forced me to order these, but just prepare for some sticker shock here. The green juice I ordered was really good as well, if I were in Barcelona longer I would definitely have bought more for the road. They have a ton of bottled juice options in the front of the place if you just want to walk in and buy those you can. Expensive but also very very worth it. Flax and Kale is a rare restaurant, even in a city that is as vegan/vegetarian-friendly as Barcelona. No joke...Flax and Kale is really really unique. The thing about Flax and Kale is that it isn't specifically vegan/vegetarian - it's "flexitarian" with an emphasis on healthy foods rather than a specific dietary requirement. And it's awesome! So, in addition to the the house-made plant-based protein sources, they also serve fish - specifically fish that are high in Omega 3 fats (think salmon and tuna). Let's talk a bit about the food itself - the plant-based protein is house-made so it isn't like what is commercially available...it's so much better. They also make their own kombucha, and if I could have shipped a year's supply back to the United States I would have. Lots of the vegetables and herbs are grown in the garden upstairs too! Everything looked great, and I can go to my grave happy after having their nachos - they might be the best I've ever had. We came for dinner the night we arrived in Barcelona, and were seated quickly. We came back a few days later for brunch, also without reservations, and had to wait 5 minutes. But, this seemed like a rarity, so reservations are probably the better way to go. Menus are available in English, Spanish, and Catalan, so non-locals will feel comfortable ordering as well. I can't say enough good things about this place. Any vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, should make this an essential stop in Barcelona. read more

Before we start, please note that the different Flax & Kale locations offer different menus and an overall different experience, this review covers just the Carrer dels Tallers location. During my visit to Barcelona, we stoped at Flax & Kale. This location offers two distinct atmospheres (indoor cozy space and outdoor rooftop garden with beautiful views and a feeling of outside of town). And the rooftop is probably the highlight of the visit. We tried a variety of dishes during our visit ranging from a tuna tartar, to salads, to chocolate chip cookies; and all of them failed to impress. Non of the dishes that we tried were outstanding, and some felt like dishes from a "ready to go" restaurant. Overall, if you want to visit a flax & kale, i would recommend one of the other locations. My Criteria 5 stars: The best food I have ever had, or an excellent option given the price. 4 stars: Good food, a restaurant I look forward to trying again. 3 stars: Good food, a restaurant that I am indifferent to. 2 stars: Below average experience, will not go again. 1 stars: This restaurant should be closed. read more

This is a fancy tiny place with a fancy menu. I wouldn't recommend for picky eaters but if you love healthy exotic plates, this is your place. To break up our Spanish tapas fest, I researched restaurants with healthier options in Barcelona. The name Flax and Kale came up often and the restaurant looked beautiful so I added it to our list. We came for brunch one Sunday around 9/9:30 before going to the MNAC. As luck would have it this location was a short walk from our Airbnb. First, the restaurant is beautiful and quite spacious. It has exposed brick with high ceilings and large plants situated by the windows. In the entry they have several fridges filled with assorted kombucha and juices. I was in heaven. I settled on the "Mother Africa." They also had several sweets and bakery items on display. I ordered the "healthy pancakes" with blueberry soya yogurt, fresh blueberries, and maple syrup. The presentation was great and the pancakes had a nice flavor but they were dense in texture. Like the name said, I felt like they tasted "healthy." I also tried two of their donuts (turmeric ginger and maple-glazed). They were gluten-free. Again, they both had good flavor but the texture was dense (think more bread-like). I also tried some of their kale chips and really enjoyed them. My dining companions ordered egg dishes and I checked in with them and they all liked their food. Perhaps the savory items are where they really shine. Our food came out pretty quickly. Not sure how, or if, that would change during peak times. When we first arrived, there were only a few other tables occupied but by the time we left many of the tables had filled up. All in all the food was filling and the prices were reasonable. They clearly put a lot of effort into presentation which I appreciate. The next time I'm in Barcelona, I'll come back but I'll try something new. read more

I loved this restaurant! A lot of healthy options on the menu. They have something for everyone no matter what the dietary restriction could be. The food is not only presentable, but also delicious. The atmosphere is really cozy and warm with nice decor and small thoughtful touches. Despite it being a huge place, the restaurant is packed and there is a line-up usually, so make reservations in advance. Unfortunately we found this place at the end of our trip to Barcelona and had the chance to dine here only once. We will definitely be back again on our next trip! read more

We had just gotten back to Barcelona after being in Costa Brava (incredible food!) and decided to walk to La Sagrada Familia. Along the way we came across Flax & Kale to my daughter's delight. I'm still not sure how she knew about the spot but we decided to get a "snack". That snack turned out to be a fantastic experience. We tried the mushroom tacos with cashew "sour cream ", Avocado toast on a massive hunk of hearty bread and a pink pitaya bowl (best ever).
