Had an early dinner there tonight. Service was excellent and answered questions about the cheeses and a number of other dishes. We had and shared: The shredded Brussels Sprouts salad, the 5 cheese plate and then each of us started and then brought home the hanger steak and the duck breast. Next time I'll go more European and start with mains then the salad and finish with the cheese plate. A half carafe of the house red and we were very pleased with a delicious meal. We've enjoyed Flat Iron from the time it opened. Three of us had dinner there last night. Hadn't been there in several months. Enthusiastic, sincere greeting from the owner who seated us and mentioned it was the same table we were at the last time we were there. She remembered. I didn't. The chef (her husband?) came over to point out there was a new menu. Great. Main course beef was very good: a NY strip steak ordered rare that came out medium rare as anticipated. (Almost every restaurant overcooks beef.) Came with delicious creamed spinach. Two orders of hanger steaks were also very good, served with great French fries. A shared side of "BBQ Brussel sprouts" was terrific. The appetizers were two frisee lardon salads and "cast iron roasted octopus with red cabbage & bacon kimchi & aioli." That poor octopus. Too much going on in that concoction. Good fresh octopus should be served griled, virtually unadorned. That dish was unappealing. The frisee lardon salads with a poached quail (?) egg were good, but were overdressed and the lardon bits were too small. (Les Baux in Millbrook serves the gold standard of Frisee lardon salad with a poached quail egg.) Two excellent desserts, a chocolate souffle and an elaborate creme brule. Success, however, is in the details. One double espresso was ordered. The waiter brought it out in a glass espresso cup and plopped it on the bare table with no saucer and no small spoon. He left a little basket with sugar packets. We couldn't get his attention or that of any other staffer to request artificial sweetener and an appropriate size spoon. The espresso sat there untouched until he came back with the desserts by which time is was no longer hot. "Can I get Splenda, please?" No, he says, "we don't have any." How come, it's a Saturday night. "We ran out." Obviously. And he never suggested any other artificial sweetener. OK, you can take back the espresso, he was told. "You don't want it?" he asks, with no "sorry." Suggestion to management: be aware that you're out of artificial sweetener and send a staff member across the road to the Mobil station shop to buy a couple of boxes. Unlikely we were the only table last night requesting it. The staff at Flat Iron is usually excellent, with less turnover than many restaurants. Our waiter last night appeared to be new there and more than a bit nervous. Additional and better training and monitoring would help. read more

Charlotte and I had dinner reservations for 6:30p Friday, July 6, and it's a good thing we did. The place was filled, but we were immediately seated at our reserved table. We started with an appetizer of Brussels sprouts, which was very good, and I ordered a flight of five brews on tap, which is $12 and come with a brief list identifying what you are drinking. The beers are changed frequently so ordering a flight is always something new. For dinner, we had beef hamburgers, medium-rare, Char's with Tallegio, mine with Gorgonzola. Both were perfectly cooked and delicious. I asked the waitress for a glass of house red to drink with my burger, she made a couple of recommendations and I left the choice to her. The selection was perfectly paired to my burger. For dessert, we shared two selections: a chocolate brownie served with a small coffee shake with bourbon, and a chocolate souffle, which the server completes at the table with a small scoop of ice cream. We loved both, although the shake far out shown the brownie, which was less fudgie than I prefer. The service throughout our meal was attentive, cordial and well-informed. We've eaten here numerous times and have never been disappointed. read more

My partner and I are still talking about this place a month later. We came here not expecting too much...in fact we didn't even stop the car to go here since it's called flatiron and I don't eat meat, and headed into Rhinebeck instead. But seeing how crowded Rhinebeck was, we went back to Red Hook. I kind of want to apologize for only giving this place 4 stars. It's because I've only been here once and it's not really 5 star dining in the best way- it's casual, easy going and relaxed. It cares about its beer menu and has fries. That kind of place. Let me begin with beer- Berlinerweisse! First time I've seen this in the US. They gave me my syrup on the side so I could enjoy it on the tarter side. Mmmmm. I got a brussel sprout salad that had so much going on taste-wise. It was a lot of food. I enjoyed but was jealous of the boy who was making happy noises while consuming his chowder. Ordered food. I ordered these crepes on a whim and he got the steak. When we got our food, I won. I actually won with a veggie dish at a steak place. The crepes were in-friggen-sane with this reduced, intensely umami romanesco tomato sauce, tiny tomatoes bursting with fresh tomatoes, mushroom and cheese. The steak was apparently done perfectly, but he chose the wrong sauce. Now, dessert. It gets its own paragraph. We got FOMO watching these souffles parade by- one table ordered one and then immediately ordered 2 more. We knew this had to happen despite being stuffed. Glad we did. Very disappointing experience this evening at Flatline. My wife and I arrived two minutes early for Dinner, at 4:58. Doors Locked, inside lights off. As we walked off, I looked at the sign which said that they opened t 5:00. I go back and peer through the glass door, and there's the staff. Four or five people are standing around the bar, a few of them look at their watches,then at me. By now it's 4:59 ( I looked at my watch) and still no reaction. No " Hi, we open in a minute, but please come in and have a seat, maybe we can get you a drink " no nothing. I'm glad they're busy enough to turn away long time, heavy tipping, repeat customers. The Flatiron was delightful beginning with Jessica, the beautiful owner along with her husband and ending with the lemon soufflé and delicious homemade ice cream sandwiches. I hadn't been here in over a year, but suggested to some friends who just moved nearby that we head there for dinner on a Saturday night recently. The dinner was very good. Not excellent, not 'just' good. I'm conflicted in saying this, because so many of the elements of the restaurant are great, but the somewhat lackluster service leaves me less than jazzed about the place. As for the good elements; the winelist and btg selections are great. I heard that the proprietress used to work for Frederick Wildman, a great small wine importer in NYC. GREAT selections at fair prices. The menu is very good, too. Roasted oyster appetizer was very tasty, and my 6 oz. flatiron steak was cooked perfectly. Fries were great, the homemade ketchup a little watery. One more little gripe--my Brussels sprout salad, while fresh, was a little overwhelmed by a shower of grated cheese. For raw greens salads, I'll stick with the kale salad up the street at Mercato. Back on the positive side, I really like the range of sauces available (included) with the steaks. All in all, a very good meal. I think, though, that this will be the place we come for grilled hunks of beef...which we don't do very often anymore. Still, this will be our steak house. read more

Our appetizers came out and we were both thrilled with them! Mike had Free Range Chicken Soup with Farro and a Buttermilk Biscuit. He really enjoyed it! He let me taste the soup, and it was the chicken-y-est soup I've ever had. So good. I had a salad of Shaved Brussels Sprouts with Butter Roasted Walnuts, Grana Padano, Lemon and Olive Oil. This truly ranks among the best salads I have ever had. The lemon and olive oil dressing was really tart which was so good with the Brussels sprouts. And you know how I feel about Grana Padano cheese. I LOVE Grana Padano cheese - having that included in the salad just sent it over the top! As happy as we were with our entrees we were slightly less impressed with our entrees and sides. Neither of us found our steaks to be all that remarkable, and our home-cooked versions of each side we ordered were better than the ones they presented. Mike had the Hanger Steak with side of Chimmichurri Sauce (unfortunately, neither of us caught that the menu said Steak Frites, and we ordered an additional side of fries. The waiter neglected to point this out too, so we have a massive amount of lack-luster fries on the table). I ordered the Grass Fed Filet Mignon with Arugula & Balsamic Vinaigrette. The filet was a little over cooked and not seasoned particularly well. It was definitely a disappointment. For sides we had Creamed Spinach and Cheddar Mac & Cheese. The spinach was difficult to eat and came out of the dish in one whole piece. It lacked the requisite creaminess too. Interestingly, the mac and cheese also lacked creaminess. We also had a plethora of french fries, but I've already told you they weren't so hot. Moral of the story is, though the space is beautiful, and the appetizers were fantastic, the entrees just didn't hold up. I'm afraid we won't be back. read more

Well this story begins 7 year ago, I was working with a group of people who enjoyed sharing stories of their fine dinning experiences, and often a visit to Flatiron in Red Hook NY. Or as the locals say "Redook"was among the stories being shared,I however well intentioned never made it to see what qualified for all the great reviews! So, last night my husband, Frank our friends Mike& Melissa found our way to Flatiron.Worth the long awaited experience.the atmosphere was warm comfortable,not fancy. It was a busy evening first Saturday after Valentine's day so perhaps many dining for post weekday celebration... So I will say the service was slightly slow but we were not in any hurry. Okay here it is husband ordered app.octopus with kimchi He loved it, I did too, then hand made bratwurst w/ sauerkraut omg.delish peerless.perfection of flavor balanced, memorable. I had hanger steak slightly under cook for my medium rare request but really good our company had same steak and enjoyed,also had scallops lovely but she thought the veggie side was too spicy (no such thing on my palate) mngmt. offered dessert on the house, they took my comment regarding the steak seriously, ordered chocolate souffle... splendid despite I only had one tiny taste hubby devoured it, when asked, was it good? Could only smile with a drop of chocolate remaining on his chin! We totally enjoyed the evening and highly recommend a visit do not wait 7 years! We are planning our next visit soon. read more

This place was good at the beginning of our meal, then horrible at the end. I went here with two friends. I ordered a ribeye steak, which I was honestly excited for. My friends ordered rabbit confit, softshell crab, gnocchi, and scallops with spatzle. The food my friends ordered was great, but the steak I received was well done instead of medium-rare. That would have been okay except for the fact that the next steak was bloody raw. So I sent it back. This was not what I was expecting for a ribeye steak priced at $30. It was an extra $5 for a side of "grilled" asparagus (which was burnt as well). The owner comes out, proceeds to argue and try to lecture us! She claimed that the last steak was cooked "to a perfect medium-rare". As well as how wonderful the chef working was! As if this would change the fact that the steak was still prepared improperly. Or that this would in any way change the serious lack of professionalism she was showing. She was very rude, disrespectful, and tried to have the same steak out again! This time burnt to a crisp. Very unprofessional, though I will say that the servers were great. Everything would have been fine if the owner had not been so rude. It's a wonder this place gets any business at all! This is a long-overdue review from back in mid-May when I brought my girlfriend up to visit the CIA where the owner Craig and I were classmates. I have since left the grind of the restaurant biz but appreciate good food and drink both of which Flatiron excel at! We started with a House Charcuterie with Cheese plate which included house-made pork pate, three local cheeses, pickled veg, chutney, and bread. Really, really good stuff! Next we both had Flatiron's signature Grilled Hanger Steak Frites which was easily one of the most delicious steaks I've ever eaten which was accompanied by shoestring frites and your choice of sauce. I chose the wild garlic aioli, while my girlfriend had the chimmichurri; both utterly awesome with the tender and perfectly cooked steak. They also have a nice selection of wines and microbrews here; I had a beer tasting flight which included the very excellent Old Speckled Hen and they recommend a good wine for my girlfriend who was happy with her choice as well. To finish the night off we had the orange-scented brownie which came with a milkshake and the chocolate soufflé. They, along with the fresh French press coffee served there, were some of the best desserts we've had in a very long time. It's been a long time since I've seen Craig, but was very impressed overall with the professional, non-overbearing service and the level of the food he puts out. He's definitely a CIA grad! We are definitely coming back to eat here next time we come to the Hudson Valley. read more

My wife and I have eaten at Flatiron on four occasions. We've had a good experience one out of the four times. The menu is very spotty. Simple items like their oysters or the duck burger are quite good but some of their other items (e.g. a recent salmon entree) can be overspiced and just poorly executed. We've also had very spotty service at Flatiron. All together not a very satisfying dining experience. We would love to see them improve but it will be a while before I try Flatiron again. read more

The quality of the food has severely declined since it's opening & the decor and atmosphere has always been sad at tasteless at best. This is a SERIOUS casual dining place. With Rhinebeck a stones throw away- and I'm sure- where all the action is, this is a gem of a restaurant on it's own (deserved) merit. 90 degree day in May so we ate outside. Late brunch menu - Sunday. Didn't want French Toast or Eggs, but this brunch menu included lunch items. Plenty of choices to suit your fancy. Burgers, Steak, Tuna, and more. Started with the baked oysters, done in a light BBQ sauce, 6 large oysters incredible juicy, tasty and perfect. Maybe the best oysters we'd ever had-anywhere! The Tuna dish was like a picture from the Food Network. Rare inside, sliced over greens, olives, fingerling potatoes, spring greens and a dipping sauce. My wife loved every bite, took several pics also, as it was a work of art. The burger was grilled just right, moo-ing rare, on a great hand made bun, but the best addition were the two grilled tomatoes atop the Stilton cheese I chose from the multi cheese choices. With the spring greens salad & light vinaigrette, this was also in the top 5 burgers of a lifetime. Good beer & wine choices -reasonably priced. After the meal, the chef sent over a citrus creme brulee. Just a perfect ending to the perfect meal. Water served in re-used wine bottles, nice touch. The waiter could not have been any more knowledgeable or nicer, as were all of the wait staff. I would not want many to find out about this place, what a great secret hideaway this could become! In Manhattan they'd be breaking the doors down to get in. So visit sleepy little Red Hook in Dutchess county not Brooklyn and enjoy some very serious food. read more

This is a review of the catering services for our wedding this past October. We booked Flatiron because their food is delicious. Their food gets 5 stars and it is wonderful and if you have an opportunity to eat in their restaurant I highly recommend you do. The staff and service *in the restaurant* is fantastic. I do not however, recommend their catering services. First the good - they do allow you to work with an outside baker, they are capable of setting up in a variety of locations (as long as your rental company provides their ovens etc.), they offer a variety of drinks packages, the final headcount isn't needed until you're practically at your wedding which is useful. Now for the rest. We had several bumps in the road while planning our wedding with Flatiron, while initially it seemed to go smoothly communication was a bit of an issue. It was difficult to get updated menus, it often took weeks and there were still mistakes and errors listed. We had requested a beer & wine only package that was supposed to also come with soft drinks and non-alcoholic beverages. We were told that we would have two beers and a red and white wine - whereas for $5/pp more we could have had a full bar. I didn't want a full bar, a point I made clear from the beginning, and I had originally been told we could have up to 5 beer selections and more than just two wines. My wedding planner had to step in and assist. They were able to get the Guinness my mother drinks and in the end we had two reds and two whites but it was unclear from the beginning what we would be getting for our money. We did not however have any non-alcoholic beverages served beyond pitchers of water and the hot apple cider we special requested for the beginning of the wedding. We had also opted for a family style service and in our discussions they had recommended that we have our guests pick an entree and the sides be served family style. We thought that sounded reasonable and collected our guests' entree requests presented them a month before the wedding and were told that everything was being served family style. I remarked that I was concerned some guests would not get enough food that way, and my main concern throughout this entire process was that all my guests be fed enough. I was assured they would and my wedding planner seconded that. The day after the wedding I find out that several of my guests never received an entree and only some of the sides. I find out further that one of the chefs had dropped an entire platter of meat. It appears that while I had told my guests it was family style, in the moment of revelry people often forget, and the servers never explained the platters as they were delivered. I emailed my wedding planner and she apologized and reached out on our behalf. While Flatiron also emailed to apologize abut the incident they did not offer anything to make up for the lost meals. My father (the bill payer) called and sorted things out and we were able to get back a partial refund for the dropped meat (4% of the total bill). Among other snags was the inability to ever receive a proper invoice detailing all the costs. We had received an estimate however some costs were percentages based on headcount and what was ordered, so we were aware of the ballpark range. However when final payment a week prior to the wedding was requested we received an email through our wedding planner with a number. I asked several times for a breakdown and proper invoice and never received one. Obviously we paid for fear that there would be no food at the wedding. Thankfully we had a beautiful wedding, and gracious guests who did not trouble me or my husband during the event about any of their concerns. While my table was served almost all of the food (we were missing one side but when 5 are served that's not a huge deal) it was delicious and just as tasty as when we ate at the restaurant. However, the sometimes unprofessional manner of dealing with Flatiron does not outweigh everything else and I cannot recommend their services for catering large events like weddings. read more

The first day they opened, we asked for a take-out menu to try some stuff, just to get a taste of what was in store. We ordered some clams, and another entry. When we got our food, the bill cost about $20. I hoped it was worth what I was paying for. When I got home, I was disappointed. After the meal I had here, I can't imagine ANYONE giving it a bad review! Absolutely one of the best meals of my life, great service, great beer, perfectly cooked... I can't think of one thing that went wrong. I've never liked grits before and the cheesy ones I had here were heavenly. I've come here every time I am in Red hook and always get their incredible and always changing cheese platter and the hangar steak. I have tried other things that my friends have ordered so I've had a lot of the menu and still excited to keep coming back and try it again. We had a great time there last night for their annual murder mystery dinner. This is our third time going and we will continue to go each year. The menu for the murder mystery dinner was a set menu. If anything, the meal could have been a bit better. I had the lobster roll but the lobster was on the cool side and should have been warm. My wife had the shepherd pie and did not like it at all. Although we were not impressed with the food last night I would not hesitate to go back for dinner. I have had dinner there before and it has always been great. With the set menu and a full house for the murder mystery show, I would still have to give this a high review. read more

A nice new entry to the Red Hook dining scene. I went on a Saturday with my wife and daughter. We got there without a reservation and were told it would be a 30 minute wait. Perfect...scooted to the IGA and did some shopping...came back and proceeded to wait another 30 minutes. So...make a reservation! The staff was appropriately remorseful, so we won't hold it against them. Now, the food. We started with a special salad for my wife which she enjoyed immensely. My daughter and I had the clam and branzino chowder and that was one of the best I have ever had. Delicious with a nice chunk of fish and little clams. My 7 year old had a ball picking the clams clean. For entrees, my wife had tuna, I had a "flatiron" steak and my little one had a burger. All were quite nice with good portions. My daughter couldn't finish the burger, but made quick work of the fries. All in all, a delicious meal. With your steak, you can add one of several sauces (I had chimichurri). There are also side dishes you can order. We didn't do dessert or coffee so no assessment on that. Ambiance was nice...though a friend who dined there said that the benches were uncomfortable. We had a table in the middle of the room. They could probably squeeze ina couple more tables, so give the owners credit for not being greedy. Oh yeah...the dinner roll my daughter god was shaped like a pear. She thought it was cute. Our waitress forgot to give me one...the only bad service note of the evening (except for the extended wait). Prices are moderate. It's not as cheap as other restaurants in the area, but the quality is worth it. The soup of $9 and the flatiron steak was $18. The burger was $10. We'll be back...but we'll make a reservation first if it's a weekend! read more
