I've heard talk about this place, and my husband suggested it for date night. I've never been here, so I was down to try it out. The restaurant is downtown, so no parking lot, but there were plenty of street parking spaces when we came. They have a couple of doors to enter, and we were confused which one (we parked on Pennsylvania St.), but we went through the door on Ft Wayne Ave. We were greeted by a lady as we entered, and she seated us. We informed her that this was our first time here, and she introduced herself as Row. She told us that her husband is Glen, and he is the chef and owner. The vibe inside is casual and cozy, and they kept a lot of the historic flair (it used to be called the elbow room, and they still have the sign up), which I love. We were seated at the table right by the kitchen, so we could watch all the magic happen. Initially, the bartender was going to serve us, but he said he was feeling under the weather and was leaving, so Ro stepped in to serve us. I ordered the Rum Runner cocktail and thought it was ok, not something I'd order again, but I drank it. My husband got an old-fashioned, and he was pleased. For food I got the the beef filet & filet confit, it came with potatoes and green beans. My meal was enjoyable. The portion didn't appear to be that much, but it was plenty of food, I had to take a to go box. My husband ordered the flatiron steak and plants, and he really enjoyed his meal. We ordered mac and cheese as a side to share and that was very tasty. They also have bread for the table that was delightful. We saw a bowl of the potatoe chips being served to another table and told Ro we'd like to try some and she gave us a small bowl to sample on the house, that was sweet and I appreciate that kind of service. Talking with Ro, we got to do a tiny meet and greet with the husband Glen and learn about the business. She informed us of a speak easy in the basement, but it wasn't open to the public the day we went because it was rented out for a private event. It's a traditional speakeasy, you must know the password to get in. She was so nice and offered us a tour. This speakeasy has so much orginality to it, its amazing, I feel so much history being in the environment. I'd love to come back and check it out. This is the coolest hole in the wall place and I'm surprised it doesn't get more hype! The layout of the restaurant and its ambiance is very unique. It's in a very old house. The speak easy in the basement was the coolest part! Ask your server and they will give you a hint to figure out the code. I had the Rural Bucatini Pasta Bowl with chicken. The sauce was AMAZING! Had a nice time dining at Flatiron inside Pointe on Penn along with my Mom and some great people. Dawn invited Mom and I to dine at this restaurant prior to our reservation at the Phoenix Theatre to see the Ma Rainey production. The restaurant is about a 6 min walk from the theater in downtown Indy. Parking was available in a parking lot in the back of the restaurant adjacent to the condos that are nearby. You have to walk across a street and enter the back of the restaurant so if you need handicap parking I recommend being dropped off in the front of the restaurant. There is usually street parking but there was the Irish Street festival that day and street parking was not allowed. We had a reservation time of about 6:15 PM on a Friday night. When I walked in there was a welcome sign that said no walk-ins as the reservations were full for the night. That's usually a good sign about how us locals support! Our party included six total people. We were seated by the window and had plenty of room for our party. For food and drinks, my mom and I decided to go with something light because we were also attending the play right after this dinner. Our host ordered chips and queso to share with the table. Thank you again Dawn, she's such a special person. The other appetizers, that we ordered, included fried cauliflower bites, which came with a dip that was rather tasty. The waitress said that the spice was hotter but when I tasted it, it wasn't that bad I would say it's more mildly spiced. I am not able to tolerate heavy spice just for reference. The breading was light and somewhat buttery, it wasn't overwhelming. Also shared the fried refried beans and guac that also came with. My mom and I ordered the earthroamer salad and we added fried shrimp to those salads. Our host scheduled the meal pretty close to the time that the play was going to start, so we really didn't have time to sit and enjoy our salad but from the bites I was able to take it was yummy... The shrimp meat was sparse but for me, it was fine personally. I would recommend allowing about two hours or so to dine and enjoy your meal with your party. I did really enjoy the Rum Runner, this was a rather tasty cocktail and Dawn ordered a bottle of red wine for the table. They have a pretty good selection of drinks. They also have non-alcoholic options. If you go on a Friday night, I recommend that you make a reservation ahead of time because there were no walk-ins available on this night. Nice and quant restaurant located off Pennsylvania Ave close to the War Memorial and Federal Building. They had it decorated so nice inside. Christmas trees, lights, candles. It was so pretty. The first thing the hosts asked us was if we had a reservation. No, but the place wasn't busy on the side we were on so that was good. I think a lot of office parties take place here and gathering's. They have two different areas. I couldn't see in the other side as we weren't over on that side and it looked like a party was happening. They have great bread and olive oil with parmesan cheese added to it. It was good. The pasta I had was good it had chargrilled vegetables and penne noodles in it. I would order that again. The tenderloin looked great and I was told it was delicious. We asked for a dessert menu and the waitress left and said they ran out of dessert menus. I don't understand that and then rattled off they had an expresso cheesecake but then never mentioned what other desserts they had. :-/ She seemed like she was done with our table. I hate that when you were just asking what they offer and you get blown off. Quiet on a Tuesday evening, service was attentive. The shrimp and mac appetizer was elevated - the cheese sauce was delicious. My dinner partner had the grilled chicken with asparagus and mixed cubed potatoes (white and sweet) - good but plain. He wound up sampling the sauce from my exceptional shrimp and cheese grits with vegetable tian. A couple of let downs - the beer list was less extensive than the menu implied, and the shrimp and grits were to be topped with an ahi filet; they were out. We were wanting to find a new place for fine dining downtown, and based on their website photos showcasing a beautiful vintage dining room we decided to make a reservation. When we arrived we were seated at a table in the bar instead of the dining room which was so loud we couldn't talk. When we asked why we couldn't eat in the dining room we were told that the dining room was booked due to a special event. After expressing our disappointment the staff grudgingly moved us to a table in the dining room where we enjoyed a nice meal. When the server brought our check and we tried to express our concerns with their policy of taking reservations when their dining room isn't available she interrupted with "Have a nice evening" and walked away. Meeting friends for dinner someplace we've never been. Parking was no issue right by the restaurant. We pretty much had the place to ourselves. Our server was new and he did an excellent job. He had a great personality. Friends ordered an appetizer of flatbread with lots of veg. I didn't try any but they said it was excellent. The bread with butter, olive oil and parm was quite nice. Husband ordered Filet Sandwich without the mushrooms and a side of fries. They suggested a side of cheese sauce and he loved the sandwich with the cheese. He doesn't like fresh cut fries ( they are never crisp enough ) I thought they were fine. My order was a Buffalo Chicken Wrap with a side of Fruit. I also got a side of Blue cheese dressing. Sandwich was great. Friends got Tenderloin and Salmon Salad no complaints. Husband loved the chocolate cake. He was the only one to get dessert. All the food came out together and all at good temp. Mixed opinions about Flatiron. Cool, hip, environment, that is close to downtown. The service is good, but the food leaves you scratching your head. They have a solid selection of options and the service is slightly above average. The food on the other hand, can be improved upon. Both dishes were plated well, but lacked flavor. My Shrimp and Grits were bland at best and my date hade to request a new martini glass due to the one being delivered to the table having a noticeable crack in it. Disappointed. read more

An extremely disappointing meal based on the price and the reviews on here. Started with a couple of drinks which were free poured, but fine. The first course was the chop salad which tasted like the cheapest that Sysco could provide including a plastic ramekin filled with what seemed to be Kraft bleu cheese dressing. The salad had no flavor. The entree was slightly better. I had the shrimp and grits with "blackened" ahi tuna. Both the proteins were of a good quality and cooked well, but the dish was overall tasteless. The blackening tasted like a scant rub of black pepper, the accompanying veggies were unseasoned, and the grits were cooked to a point where they felt like puréed potato. The accompanying sauce was okay. None of the servers or bartenders seemed to have a good time and seemed reasonably upset to be working in a place like this. We had such a great dinner recently at Flatiron. Even with just two guys doing front of house, they never left us unattended. The shrimp taco appetizer looks like something you might be able to whip up at home, but the sauce takes it to the next level. The steaks were butter knife tender and delicious. We met a friend for dinner last night. The restaurant is in a very old building with so much character. You could tell our server, Violet, was so proud of the restaurant. She knew the history of the building and was willing to share it. The food was so scrumptious I wish I had taken pictures. My salmon was fabulous, my husband's tuna was exquisite, our friends lobster bisque was incredible. When she brought the fresh bread to our table, she said that she calls it the restaurant's crack because you can't refuse it. It's very good. We had a nice cocktail and wine that were also very good. We were too full to have dessert, but we plan on going back to make sure we have a piece of the homemade cheesecake or flourless chocolate torte. read more

Although it has been open for a couple of years now it was only this past week that I made it into The Flatiron on Penn in downtown Indianapolis at the junction of Pennsylvania Street and Fort Wayne Avenue on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. It is the previous location of the celebrated Elbow Room which served customers there for over eighty years. My son E was with me. We stopped in there for a bite to eat before going over to the Antelope Club to watch the Thursday night Colts game on television. The Flatiron has no private parking lot but there is satisfactory metered street-side parking along the two adjacent thoroughfares. The interior is divided into two primary public spaces, a bar and a dining room. The furnishings and overall decor are comfortable and welcoming. There is a small fenced sidewalk area along a portion of the Fort Wayne Avenue side of the building to allow for limited seasonal outdoor seating. Glenn and Rolonda Brown own the establishment and as it turned out it was Rolonda--or Ro--who greeted and served us. She was charmingly friendly and accommodating throughout. Glenn is the chef. The dinner menu offers appetizers; soups and salads; sandwiches and wraps; entrees featuring beef, chicken, pork, and seafood; sides; and more. They also have a full bar. We ordered the Tofu Stuffed Mushrooms to share as a starter, then E had the Steak & Plants and I had the Pork Tenderloin sandwich with chips. It was all pleasingly flavorful. E was especially complimentary regarding the beef in his selection. My boyfriend and I stopped in on a Friday night and it was clear from the start that they (like many other places right now) were understaffed. There were only two servers who were also bartending. All this is to say, the service was great. They did their best to accommodate us and were extremely attentive. Our food did take a while, but the kitchen appeared to be short staffed as well. If you go out anywhere right now, expect to wait and please be patient and kind with the restaurant staff. The food was excellent and definitely worth the wait! It was a birthday celebration and everyone left full and satisfied. Just a heads up, no steak sauce. We came upon this place while looking for dinner pace on the Friday night! It's cute little place on Penn street in downtown previously named the elbow room. We got the standard cocktails : Mule and Old Fashioned bourbon which were Pretty standard and classic . For entree we ordered the piece chops and pan roasted salmon. The salmon was perfectly cooked with Parmesan risotto on the side. The enjoyed the enjoyed the roasted tomato flavor with it . I don't eat pork but I was told it tasted really good! I have been meaning to try this place since it changed over from The Elbow Room and finally got the opportunity. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT! The renovations have made a borderline dive restaurant into a classy establishment while still retaining historic features. The food and cocktails were delicious with a nice presentation. I have a food restriction that they easily accommodated. I appreciated that they kept nods to The Elbow Room by placing its old sign in the bar and retaining a couple of the food items. Should I start with the good or the bad? Let's get the bad out of the way. The reason I am giving a 2 star review: A few of my guests were drinking wines by the glass and we noticed an extra glass on the table. Next time the waitress stopped by we asked, who this was for and it turned out to be a mistake, the person she thought had ordered it, had not done so. No problem, she says obviously aggravated by this: Well I can take it away then. Well, jokingly I said: "Watch them pour that back into a bottle." Never in my life would I have imagined that this would actually happen, but it did. The waitress first set the glass on the bar, then moved it from the bar and placed in next to the bottles on the wall of the bar. Then the bartender pulls out a funnel and YES, you guessed it: poured the wine from the glass into the bottle. We were stunned. I did talk to the manager/chef, he seemed appalled, but did not offer any apology. We didn't touch the wine in question, but still, who knows what others may do or have done in our situation. You may want to ask if that is fresh wine or recycled... Our waitress did have quite an attitude throughout the evening, so that wasn't helping any. I suspect she thought she was being funny, when in reality she was rather insulting towards us. This is fine if you are at Dick's or some casual bar or a dive. This should be a more elevated dining experience judging by the decor and the menu. The good stuff: The bread with the oil/butter dip they served is the absolute bomb. My chicken tenders were some of the best I ever had. My guests all seemed to enjoy their dinners also (until the above incident happened) So, the food itself and the decor is why I give any stars at all. read more

Rarely has a historic building in Indy been handled with this level of love and care. I frequented the Elbow Room when it was open, and was bummed to see it say goodbye, but it's a rare thing when the successor outdoes its predecessor, and Flatiron pulls it off. They kept the old sign, the beautiful bar and fixtures, but upped the ante with a basement speakeasy, an upstairs cigar bar, and a phenomenal kitchen. I didn't know Mac n' Salad was something I needed until I came here, and Flatiron might have the best old fashioned in town. And both the service and clientele make you feel like a regular almost instantly -- which is hard to find with a lot of the dives in town being replaced by trendier establishments. Flatiron feels like a neighborhood spot with a sense of history and adventure, and it's always fun to spend an evening there. read more

My boyfriend chose this restaurant for our one year anniversary and I was pleasantly surprised. At first I was a little hesitant because the parking situation wasn't great, but it wasn't too bad of a walk. Once we were inside I immediately was disappointed because my expectations were fancy restaurant, which it can be, but we were put on the side that seemed more bar-ish. He went more for the price range than the whole restaurant, but after being seated my perspective started to change. We were placed right by the window and looking out I felt like I was in NYC with the lights. The service was amazing, our waitress was very friendly and helped with my indecisiveness on what to order. She recommended the Alfred fries w/ pork belly and bacon as an appetizer which I was a little hesitant, but so happy I did because it was delicious! For my entré I got the four crunchy shrimp tacos which were equally as delicious! My boyfriend got the Waygu slider which was also delicious, but the portion was a little small. We finished with a cheesecake which was presented beautifully. The wife who owned the place was so sweet and gave us these delicious muffins on the house! My Gurlfriends Group held our monthly Birthday celebration for two of our members. About 16 of us showed up, and were pleasantly pleased as to how well we were accommodated, for we had a beautifully appointed corner room with a view of two streets. We visited on a whim and super excited we did. I was a regular at the Elbow Room in my early professional life, was sad to see it go and happy that someone was giving it new life ... However, never pulled the trigger to try it out. First I am pleased that some of the character elements of the ER have been thoughtfully preserved, tipping the hat to it's deep history. I found the space inviting to the point you could feel comfortable being casual there but also has the feel of fine dining so could be right on for a formal dinner. They also have a fabulous space for large group or corporate dining with an awesome view onto the war memorial The best part is the food. First, it's pretty. Thoughtfully plated and very pleasing to the eye. I found the menu to be vast in taste and concept ... Crowd Pleasing. Every dish we tried was fantastic. Flavors were on....every one making you more excited to try the next. Service was great. We wanted to sit at at the bar and loved the open kitchen view. Could tell right away food was going to rock.
