I called the shop; a junior tech said the owner had done the work and promised a follow-up -- which never happened. To test the system, I installed a single 8GB RAM stick, and the computer POSTed and booted immediately, working perfectly. I then installed two 8GB Crucial RAM sticks, restoring full functionality. This directly contradicts the shop's claim that known-good RAM had been tested and the system would not boot. I went online to get a form and they were all PDFs and wouldn't allow us to make the changes we needed. I'm pretty careful, so looked for conversion software on CNET, which is usually trustworthy. I downloaded it, okd the changes to my computer (which PC Mobile Help had just cleaned on a routine yearly tune-up that I always do), and BAM, I was into Malware land, with pop-ups erupting everywhere. I shut everything down so it wouldn't email my contact list, and tried to knock out the programs with the tools I had on my laptop. Couldn't do it, though I tried everything I knew plus internet searches. My antivirus programs flagged the malware fine, but it just kept coming back and I couldn't fix it. This was 11:30 at night. At 9:00 Am I called PC Mobile Help and they linked to my computer through the program called TeamViewer that I've downloaded and that lets them take command of my computer. They ran tests, ran programs, gave me programs to download and run off-line, walked me through it in every way. It took two hours, but they got rid of the malware and got the computer that I rely on for work and everything else working fine. Dealing with a malfunctioning computer on top of everything else was the last thing I needed at that point, and they found a way to fix it--even though I was in Los Angeles and they were in their Seattle office. I'm just hugely grateful. They're also just really nice people. I've also had them work remotely to tune-up computers of the staff for a project called the Campus Election Engagement Project and that's taken a huge load off of my mind as well. Got them to fix computers for our staff working in Florida, North Carolina and Everett. I love them and recommend them really highly.

A little over a week ago, my cat decided to water test my laptop. Long story short, a glass of water spilled into (!) my laptop. The laptop sat immersed in this pool of water for nearly 20 hours. Everything was complete toast. Although most of my files are in the cloud, especially the most important ones, I decided there might be the occasional file or folder that I might not notice tomorrow or even a year from now. I decided it would be best to retrieve the contents of the drive on the laptop for peace of mind. I left the laptop with them to do an assessment first. That assessment was ~$80. After their assessment, they indicated that the contents of the drive were retrievable and gave me an estimate of $400 to retrieve the contents of the drive (the $80 would apply to that figure). I decided it was worth the cost, if for nothing more than that elusive peace of mind. I also needed a drive to put the contents on (or provide my own). Since I didn't have one, and didn't want to bother with purchasing a 3rd party drive, they charged me $140 for a Toshiba Portable Storage device. So, for about $600 (w/ tax) I got everything off the lost drive. Was it worth it? Without a doubt. Would I go back? Hell yeah.

Awesome. I was just thinking he would see the part was broken and replace it--but he went above and beyond at no initial cost. When he called later, he sounded apologetically grim: My motherboard was damaged. The motherboardin' motherboard. A death sentence to something replaceable like an iPhone. Apple had told me that my phone could be upgraded for $150 (but I'm waiting for the Fiiiiiiiiiive!) so I'm going to wait until I can't tolerate not talking on the phone. This may be a good time for me to work on my ESP skills anyways. Even more amazing, my final bill was less than HALF the original quote that I was given. And it wasn't the lower bill that blew me away, it was the goodwill behind it. I felt the love *fist pump* So in conclusion, this is the place to be.
