This place pretty much rocked my socks off. My bf found the place while we were driving on Rainier--ridin' dirty like we always do. He said I should check them out just based on the Yelp reviews. Fortunately/unfortunately, my iPhone's microphone had stopped working just the day before, meaning that I could hear people talking but they couldn't hear me, so I had a chance to give Tech Lab a try. The building is very Columbia City-ish with plenty of parking. Inside, there were large screens posting info about their vast services (don't judge them about the extra "L" in the word "follow"--they're going to fix it. It's not nearly as noticeable as when a Chinese menu has the word "shrimps" on it.) I was greeted by Charles, who looked very smart--and not just because he was wearing glasses. I told him about my dilemma--my new Hans Solo in carbonite case didn't protect my phone from a fall and phone back itself cracked. I attribute it to the fact that Hans was in carbonite. If his hands and legs were free, I'm sure Hans would have been able to shoulder-roll onto the floor. After some entertaining banter, I left Hans in good hands with Charles. I was given an initial quote and an ETA. He even called me partway through to tell me that he tested my phone parts in other phones and other parts into my phone to see if he could isolate the issue. Awesome. I was just thinking he would see the part was broken and replace it--but he went above and beyond at no initial cost. When he called later, he sounded apologetically grim: My motherboard was damaged. The motherboardin' motherboard. A death sentence to something replaceable like an iPhone. Apple had told me that my phone could be upgraded for $150 (but I'm waiting for the Fiiiiiiiiiive!) so I'm going to wait until I can't tolerate not talking on the phone. This may be a good time for me to work on my ESP skills anyways. Even more amazing, my final bill was less than HALF the original quote that I was given. And it wasn't the lower bill that blew me away, it was the goodwill behind it. I felt the love *fist pump* So in conclusion, this is the place to be. So clear out the [*ahem*] questionable content on your devices and bring 'em on down. Don't forget to "like" them on Facebook so you can get $5 off of your first service with them. After I had a hard drive crash I went to Tech Lab to help recover my documents and photos. They did an above and beyond job of making sure they could get me what I needed. After I took my recovered files home and found a few important ones missing, they let me make an appointment to personally help locate the files. While I couldn't get everything due to corrupted files (not their fault), they got me most of the missing files and went beyond my expectations. Extremely friendly, understanding, and excellent value for what they offer. Bummed. I've gone a couple of times but am very tech savvy. I sent my wife and she got a run around, slow service, and over charged for an iPhone screen replacement. Mine was replaced in a couple of hours and cost me $100. For her, the took 24h to do nothing and when she checked in, they said they'd get on it. We came back hours later, still not done. She then went again,v was charged for the guys learning curve on a two year old iPhone because he'd forgotten how to do it. She was then charged a rush fee. Will find another place for future repairs. This is the third and last time we'll be using their services. read more

HELP! Tech Lab is my personal IT life jacket. Sunny and his crew have saved me so many times, I am embarrassed that I haven't yelped of their good work before this. From the drowning of my Blackberry to the virus on my work computer to the death of my personal laptop Tech Lab was there each time. They are not miracle workers and they are HONEST. Sunny gives me the straight story of my machines and never tries to upsell me into unnecessary repairs or upgrades. When it was determined that the motherboard had fried he advised me to get a new one. It probably would have been more profitable for him with the additional labor and a motherboard sale. He even suggested the options of the new machine for me. Sunny was able to salvage my data and did the transfer once I got my new HP mini. The next day they both called and emailed me to let me know it was done (which was very helpful, as I didn't have a back-up phone!) She had a lot of irreplaceable data and was very worried it was gone for good. I recommended these guys based on the other good reviews and seeing their storefront as I pass by regularly. She received the laptop back in worse shape than she gave it to them in. It was nothing short of completely destroyed. Missing screws, scratches, won't even boot anymore. To add insult to injury, very rude service to go along with it. There are a lot of good data recovery companies in the area to choose from, this is not one of them. My fiance loves her laptop so when she broke it we knew it had to be fixed fast. After checking out the yelp reviews and receiving high recommendations from friends we took it here. Turns out she overheated and fried her hard drive. Charlie diagnosed, fixed, installed windows 7, and had it repaired in 24hours! Did I mention he did all of this for $200! Amazing. Oh and did I mention we were stuck in traffic and he stayed open 20 minutes past closing to explain what was wrong with the laptop and how he fixed it. Love it!!! I've taken my laptop in 2 times over the past 2 years. The first time it crashed due to some driver issues. This last time I thought it was the same issue but when I got it home it still didn't work. I brought it back only to find that this time it was the hardware - Argh!!! Because I had paid for Sunny to fix something that wasn't a problem he actually gave me three options - refund my money, apply it to my next service or apply it to my purchase. This kind of service rarely happens. So while I have to buy another computer I am extremely happy with my service here yet again!!! That is to say that they are machines when it comes to bringing your tech back to life, they are stealthy and lethal against viruses and other malcontents in your software, they're cute and cuddly and they have the tech skills of a teenage heart throb wannabe with hellafied gangsta computer hacking skills. You got this image in your noggin'? No? Okay, reread that first bit and try real hard. Maybe grab a bite to eat at a taco truck first? I had a smashed iPhone 4S screen that was crumbling into the netherworld with every tap of the screen. Had the problem resolved within 20 minutes and for $30 less than these mail-in data recovery services that take around a week! While here the technician also gave me free recommendations for other data storage methods and how to repair other hardware issues on my own. read more

I recently used Tech Lab to unlock a iPhone 4s from ATT for use on t-Mobile network. I brought the phone in just before Christmas and Charles told me they could have it done within 48 hours and ready for pick up on Dec. 26 - seriously awesome!!! It was not as expensive as I expected. When I picked up the phone, Charles helped me cut my SIM card and get it going. When most places are so difficult to deal with, Tech Lab was a refreshing experience. Went to Tech Lab for an electrical problem and fan replacement in my laptop. Why I wasn't happy... It took them a full month to repair. When the repairs exceeded the time estimate no one bothered to notify me or update me. When I went in to pick up the laptop they returned it dirty and in someone else's bag. They disabled some things and did not 're'able them when they completed the project. They lost my modem card, didn't tell me and when I called to locate it a, huge, unnecessary deal ensued. They offered to fix a crack in the left hinge, which was nice, but when I booted up I noticed that they hadn't lined up the repair adequately and now there are two 'dimples' at the bottom of my screen. In my request for a new fan I was told that it would be difficult to locate and not worth the effort. (I conducted a basic search on the web on my own when I got home and located one for my exact model for 25 bucks in under five minutes) Above all, I was treated like my problems didn't matter and my property was not worth anything. Okay, my laptop is definitely aging and not the 'best out there,' but it's what I have to work with. If I could afford to chuck the whole thing and buy new every time I liked I would. If I could run down to the local target and pick up parts and pop them in I would. Fortunately for computer repair shops not everyone out there can do either of these things. That's why we take the time to ask you, and pay you, for help! It would be desirable if you treated my property with respect and worked alongside me. In Tech Lab's defense, I paid very near the price estimated and so-far, so-good with the electrical problem I was having (hence the two stars). Will I ever go back there again? Nope. read more

I brought in a completely dead iPhone 4s, fairly confident that there was absolutely nothing they could do to revive it. I was primarily interested in just getting some crucial data off of it. I was told by an Apple Store genius that this would likely cost "in the thousands," and was also quoted by a reputable online service between $450-$1450. I'm a pretty tech savvy person, and this phone appeared to be beyond reviving even to get the data off it. Instead, Tech Lab was able to completely repair the phone for **$80**. They changed the charger port and battery for this amount. No other company even noted that as a possibility. Highly recommended! read more

Charles does phenomenal work. He's super conscientious and has gone above and beyond to take care of me at every turn. I can't recommend him enough! I had dropped my i927 down a flight of stairs and the screen was ruined. He somehow noticed that since the buttons weren't working there was likely a broken cable. After getting quotes on parts he determined that I'd be better of replacing the device. However since I was committed to retrieving my data from my digital lifeline, he suggested that he could just buy a used i927 to use as a "parts phone." That way, no matter what issues he ran into, he would have a replacement part on hand. He completed the work in half the time I expected and shipped both the repaired and cannibalized devices to me while I was traveling in California. What service! read more

Tech Lab is an adequate place to go get your computer repaired. I've used them pretty often over the past couple years because its the closest place to my house and they are reliable. The only knock I have on them is that they are kind of overpriced to me. Also during a data transfer they were doing for me, they lost some of my files, and when I emailed them about it they never responded. When I went to ask about the files in person, the guy pretty much said "it happens" and didn't offer an apology or any kind of reimbursement for my lost files. I still use them, because pretty much all computer repair places I've been are equally incompetent but if another local place opened I wouldn't hesitate to take my business elsewhere. read more

When I have computer problems I normally go to REPC, but this time I thought I would try Tech Lab. When I dropped off my computer to fix a stuck key, I was told the cost would be $45 plus parts (he thought I might need a new keyboard) However, when I came to pick up my laptop, the price had jumps from $45 to $75.00 or 3/4 of $90??????, the explaination given for the increase was that they cleaned my laptop, but that was not why I brought the computer in. I feel list Tech Lab took advantage of me and I would recommend either using REPC or you should refuse to pay any increase that Tech Lab tries to charge you. I regret not doing that because I am now out an additional $30.00. $75.00 for a Stuck key is Crazy. One last thing, Tech Lab removed my laptop cover and now when I strick keys the keys make a hollow sound so I need to make another trip to Tech Lab and have them correct this new problem and hopefully they will not charge me again, but I will let you know. read more

My husband and I live in Columbia City and came to Tech Lab, LLC for help with our sick laptop. Honestly, they had great references so we thought we'd give their services a try. I have to confess, my husband and I are not tech whizzes, okay I said it (ha)! But we do appreciate Tech Lab and their ability to handle the glitches when we can't. We have used them twice and have worked with Charles both times. He's incredibly approachable, knowledgeable and speaks the same language we do, no tech speak that leaves me scratching my head. We have been very happy with their services. The first time they handled our laptop issues with the hard drive very quickly and thoroughly explained what needed to happen to get it up and running, and did the repairs in just a few days, great! I had to bring (gulp) our laptop back a few months later and they only left us paying for the deposit, no added charges since our laptop was truly on its last leg...we were grateful considering our dire circumstances. Never go here would be my advice! I brought in my computer because the sound would not work. About a week after leaving it with them they finally got back to me and said they thought I had a virus which was making it run slowly and that in order to fix it they might have to factory reset my computer. I told them not to since I had not saved my documents yet and I did not have any of my back up discs because they were destroyed when we moved back to the states a few months previously. I also told them it was not running slowly enough to bother me and I had a lot of expensive software, like Rosetta Stone installed. I asked if they had been able to fix the sound and they said they weren't sure but would get back to me. A few days later they called and said I could pick up my computer. When I got it home all of the software was gone! When I complained they had me bring it back and were able to salvage my word documents but I lost all of the rest of my software. I feel like they took advantage of my ignorance of technology. read more
