Flake is a great neighborhood spot for breakfast. This is probably one of the last few Venice places that are low key and affordable. Trust me, I love a nice meal that has a cool ambiance and vibe but sometimes I just want a low key breakfast in sweatpants without feeling like I'm a slob kabbob. Everything is between $7-12 which for LA especially Venice is bomb. I got the breakfast bagel with egg, gouda cheese, tomato and lettuce. It was good, it's not ground breaking but for less than $8 it did the job. I barely tasted any cheese, so that was my only complaint, I wanted it to be more cheesy. The breakfast burritos look delicious as well as the build your own cereal bowls which is a super cute concept. What a great find! My boyfriend and I were looking for a new brunch spot to try out on a Saturday morning, so I did a quick search on Yelp (thanks, Yelpers!) and chose Flake. What a great decision that turned out to be! The wait wasn't long, and we found a table inside within minutes of arriving. My boyfriend ordered the bacon burrito ($7.00) with a large coffee, and I ordered the veggie burrito ($8.50) with an iced tea ($3), and a Sambazon acai bowl ($7.75) to share. The total came out to just over $30, which is about average for an LA brunch spot. The cashier was very pleasant, patient, and understanding. Right after I ordered my iced tea, the person behind him was already making my drink, which I didn't realize when I asked him to serve my drink without ice. He was very understanding, and had my drink re-poured for me. The food came very quickly, and it was all so delicious! The granola on the acai bowl had a particularly delicious combination of crunchy and sweet. It inspired me to want to start making acai bowls at home again. My boyfriend enjoyed his coffee black, which is definitely a sign that their coffee is good. Their coffee is also self-serve, with free refills - yay! I took a sip of my iced tea during our meal, and I discovered that it had mint in it, which I did not expect and do not like. I waited in line, and told the cashier, who, again, was very patient and understanding about my complaint. He offered to find a solution for me, but a woman behind the counter (a manager, perhaps?) took over, and offered to brew a fresh pot of iced tea for me without any mint in it. I was delighted by her generous offer, and accepted. The tea only took a few minutes to brew, and it was much more to my liking. I'm very impressed about how kind and helpful the staff is here! They really match quality and service, which is a difficult combination to come across nowadays. Reading the reviews they've received, coupled with my experience here, I am not surprised that the owners took the time to make amends for the reviews they received from unhappy customers. Although Flake is a very hipster, typical Venice business, with a clientele of surfers, dog owners, and yogis, they do not have the typical pretentious, hipster apathetic approach to their customers. They are very eager to serve their customers with high quality food and high quality service, to make you want to come back for more. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back here again! They accept credit cards, and there is street parking along Rose, which is free and easy to find. There is indoor and outdoor seating, so you can bring your pup to sit on your lap as you dive into your fresh fruit acai bowl. read more

I can't help but loving Flake! The atmosphere is cutesy, quaint cafe on the corner and somehow it, like magic, always seems sunny there. The staff are so sweet as well! They will help you hook up to their free Wifi, have an enlightening conversation about their theories on Pandora selection, make you a decaf Americano for the same price as a coffee, and deliver yummy food to your table in less than 10 mins. It's just a happy place :) Most times you come in and everyone there knows each other and is conversing across tables. I mean, where in any town, let alone LA is there such a Cheers like camaraderie between customers. Single dads chatting with other single dads, dogs welcome...just a really down-to-earth feel good breakfast/brunch/lunch spot. Food: Always farmer's market fresh, simple fare, consistently good. I had an aversion to paying $5 for a bowl of cereal as well at first, but there is something novel about it, and the sliced fruit topping is out of this world fresh. Also, they definitely have more than cereal, and favs are Breakfast burrito with chicken sausage, The Fatty (turkey, swiss, avocado on croissant with "secret sauce" AKA crack sauce!), Oatmeal with choice of toppings, and any salad or wrap for lunch. They have a small patio to sit outside, which was great to take in a winter afternoon but also to people watch. We ended up getting the Nutella / peanut butter English muffin and an acai bowl. I love Flake for their breakfast croissant sandwiches, breakfast burritos, their quiche and blueberry coffee cake. All of these things are the best in the city. Trust me... I'm a breakfast burrito connoisseur. I've tried them all, all over town and this is by far the best, for me. It's the light and fluffy kind... Not the kind that's greasy and filled with meat. And the quiche. YUM. It's small, but comes with either a salad or fruit. It's so flaky and good! And their blueberry coffee cake! O. M. G. It's so moist and tasty! And they definitely don't skimp on the blueberries! Delicious! It's a breakfast/lunch joint and closes at 3... so it's rare that I can ever hit it up during the week, but good enough to battle the crowds during the weekend. I think I'll have a bowl of vitamin enriched cereal with almond milk and fun dessert toppings for breakfast today... and pet all the furry doggies that are drinking water from the water bowls supplied by Flake and leashed to the convenient doggy rail outside. While I'm here, I think I'll also have an Illy coffee and spend a few minutes gawking at the hot surfer guys that come in after their morning surf with their bare toned chest and blonde hair glistening in the sun. Ah, now I can begin my day! Yes... Gentrification has allowed this beach-surfer vibe cafe to open it's doors to the ever-evolving Rose Avenue neighborhood. I adore the staff and plain old enjoy sitting outside and watching Venice go by. Ok...ok...some would say "it's just cereal" - but the "pinkberry" concept of making your bowl of delicious-ness unique that makes this place worth popping by. I don't know what the mental block was, but I NEVER thought of combining cereals in one bowl at home. (probably that old childhood fear of my food touching) Well, Flake in Venice, CA opened my eyes to the wonderful multi-cereal, multi-topping breakfast experience. Service was excellent (literally with a smile) and the outdoor seating was nice since I had my Jack Russell Terrier, Sid, along. (they have a dog tie up/seating area) The only thing that could make Flake better would be to move it to Abbot Kinney...but who knows, in a few years Rose Ave. may be like Abbot Kinney. My wife and I came to Flake after picking our kids up from the airport. The night before, we were looking up places to eat that had good ratings and were near LAX; Flake came up as one of the top spots, so we went. So glad that we did! What we ordered: Turkey Sausage Breakfast Burrito + Avocado served with tomatillo salsa (came out hot and packed full of fluffy eggs, there was sausage and cheese in every bite, and the avo really lent a good creaminess to the whole thing), Plain Bagel w/Cream Cheese (whipped cream cheese and lots of it on a perfectly toasted bagel. My kiddo loved it!), Super Cro-Jo (big, buttery croissant egg sammy with tomatoes, greens, and cheese), Iced Coffee (bright and fruity), Mocha Latte (subtle chocolate notes in the coffee), and homemade Hot Chocolate. I was out in LA during Christmas for a week and in that time I hit Flake up two mornings in a row. I would have kept going back had I not felt guilty about going to the same spot over and over again. Seeing as how I live in DC, if I moved to LA I'd try to find a spot within biking distance to Flake. What? You don't try to live near the spots where you want to stuff your face the most often? Weird. Anyways. Had their bacon, egg, and Gouda breakfast sandwich on an English Muffin one morning, and a Cro-Jones the next. Both were delicious and were washed down with some of the great OJ they offered near the cash register. It was nice in late December to sit outside on the sidewalk while I scarfed down the deliciousness that came at a reasonable price. Friendly service too! Next time I'm hanging out in LA, I'll probably start a morning or two off at Flake without a doubt. read more

The Veggie Rad was amaaaaazing! I'm not sure I'll ever be able to go back and try something else it was that good. If you come here I must insist you get the Acai bowl, and that you get it with berries. Split it with a friend if need be, or tell yourself you won't eat all of it (you will). Have it as an appetizer or have it as dessert as you stroll around the lovely neighborhood (or, you know, on the mile long walk back to the one parking you found). Whatever you do, have it. Of course I expected a laid back California vibe. I didn't expect the food to be so, so, so poor in quality, creativity and taste. I ordered a cappuccino and a regular acai bowl with berries. The cappuccino was just okay, but the acai bowl was actually inedible. Way too sweet! Made with sambazan acai and supermarket granola it was extremely disappointing. This is the perfect spot for a very casual breakast on the weekend! Came in with a friend after a big night of partying and ordered the Super Cro-Jo: Scrambled Eggs, Crispy Bacon, Smoked Gouda Cheese, Greens, Tomato, and Secret Sauce on a Toasted Croissant. It was damn good. The bacon was nice, crispy and smoky. Everything you could ever want in a pork product. I also ordered a bowl of fruity pebbles. Because you can order cereal here. This really did the trick. It was a crowded Sunday but we got to the front of the line quick-like and ordered two of whatever they call the turkey, cheddar and avo. My work office is down the street and I arrived early one day so I looked in the area for breakfast. What an awesome little spot! Plenty of vegetarian options and had a full coffee menu. I got the breakfast veggie club to go and when I opened it up at work I was sooo stoked! This club sandwich was HUGE! And so so good! The staff was exceptionally friendly too, even checking to make sure I didn't park on the wrong side of the street for street cleaning day. I'm realizing as I slowly write more reviews, that what effects me more than anything else is the customer experience. I'll more or less eat anything, and, I have the "have you ever eaten...?" list to prove it. So when the customer service hits me wrong, it pretty much negatively colors my whole experience. Perhaps I quibble, but: When going over our orders, the host (possibly owner) said of my girlfriend's acai bowl, "ok, that's the acai smoothie, with bananas and berries..." To which my gf replied, "oh! I didn't know it came with berries!" To which the host replied, "oh it doesn't really." "How much more is that?" "$2" (or possibly $3, I can't quite remember). Then going over my veggie burrito order, the host said "veggie burrito, with veggie sausage, egg, and avocado." "Oh does avocado come with that? I thought it was extra" "oh it is...$3" I understand up-selling, but you do so by ASKING "hey do you want avocado with that?" You don't just automatically add it and hope you don't get caught. That may not be stealing, but it sure as hell is disingenuous. Especially considering that one small breakfast burrito (literally half the size of what you're imagining right now) and one tiny acai bowl without any of the up-sells still topped $18. They were both not bad, but if I'm having a $10 burrito that just has veggie sausage, egg, and cheese in it, I'd better be blown away. Sadly not. read more

My sister-in-law loooves acai bowls, so when I read the reviews on Flake, I knew I had to take her here. The place did not disappoint! The restaurant is on the smaller side, so I wouldn't recommend a group much larger than four, unless you want to sit outside. We came for brunch and since we were having lunch later, the hubs and i split the fancy turkey panini and an acai bowl. We also added a chai latte and fruit to the acai bowl. The panini was delicious, but then again, who can say no to pesto, avocado, and brie?! Those are probably some of my most favorite ingredients. I would have preferred a different bread type, but it wasn't bad. The acai bowl was yummy. Not as sweet as other places since it didn't have a drizzle of honey. However, I did really appreciate that it didn't melt as fast as other places so I could enjoy my sandwich and then some of the acai bowl. The fruit was also very sweet which was nice since I just bought some strawberries and they didn't taste nearly as good. I was not that impressed with the soy chai tea latte. Overall, a great meal, but a little pricey for lunch. I guess that's the price you pay for healthy food. I'll be back for more. =D read more
