I never met a cheeseburger I didn't like. Of all the wonderful foods in this world, I think cheeseburgers are one thing I could probably eat everyday. (In a world with no calories, that is.) However, not all cheeseburgers are created equal. I took a recent survey amongst some of my Facebook friends and was surprised to find a pretty even division between In-N-Out and Five Guys lovers. I thought it might be interesting to compare them and see which cheeseburger reigns supreme. I've graded the burgers according to five categories: meat, bun, toppings, sauce, and overall taste. I think that pretty much covers the important stuff. Here we go... Meat Meat is probably the most important component to any good burger. It gives the burger its uniqueness and character. Above all things, quality and care for the hamburger patty are the two most important components to having a delicious cheeseburger. In-N-Out and Five Guys both use hamburger that is never frozen and is delivered fresh a couple times a week, so you know the meat is fresh and you can taste the quality. Both grill their meat to a perfect "medium well" on a flat surface, which creates a nice crust on the outside. The big difference here is the amount of meat on the burger. Five Guys has a considerably larger patty, which, in my opinion, gives them an edge. Winner: Five Guys Bun If the meat is the most important component, then the bun is the second most important -- it serves as the foundation. Five Guys has fresh sesame seed buns that hold up pretty well to the large amount of toppings that can sometimes be found on a typical Five Guys burger. As long as you eat the burger pretty quickly, you shouldn't have too big of a mess. However, I've noticed that the bun begins to disintegrate if you wait too long before eating, and nobody likes a soggy bun. In-N-Out's buns are soft, chewy, and in perfect ratio to the rest of the burger. They also hold up really well. They put a light toast on the bun with butter, which gives them extra richness in flavor and slightly crispy texture. You can't beat In-N-Out's buns. Winner: In-N-Out Toppings In-N-Out has a very limited number of options when it comes to toppings. They are your typical old-school burger joint. "Burger purists," you might call them: no bacon, no guacamole, and no flashiness -- just pure burger deliciousness. Five Guys, on the other hand, has a long list of toppings for their burgers -- everything from grilled mushrooms and onions to raw jalapeños. This was an easy decision: more toppings equal a win for Five Guys. Winner: Five Guys Sauce Five Guys gives you the choice of mayo, mustard, ketchup, barbecue, and even A1 steak sauce to put on your burger. I go to Five guys on a regular but this location was the worst. Besides the bad service they got our food wrong, missing a patty and no bacon on my bacon cheeseburger. They argued we order it wrong until we showed them the receipt then agreed to fix it. They asked us to keep our burgers so we did. Mid way through my food I get cold, burnt bitter bacon. After the first bite I chose not to eat it and gave it back I told them I didn't want it this burnt if they could make me another. They argued and said that's how it's cooked, I've eaten this burger the same way countless times, that is not how it's always cooked so they refused to make it. Once we finished eating we got the extra burger patty they charged us for original which my boyfriend just ate by itself. Seriously, the regular burger is a 2 patty burger, they offer pretty much every topping that goes on a burger and because every burger is made to order (you must tell them every single topping you want - there is no "standard burger") the food is always hot and fresh. The fries are real potato fries as in cut from the raw potato fresh and a large order of fries is enough for two people to share. I love fries and it is enough to share... You can get in and out with two people for right around $20 so that is nice on the wallet. They have a large outdoor seating area if you prefer eating outdoors. I guess I got spoiled with the other burger places where things like jalapeños are grilled or just not raw. This review is for the location at 10060 Alabama Street in Redlands California. A few weeks ago my husband and I went in to have dinner They were not busy. We took our usual table by the soft drinks dispenser. We were happily eating ( the food, as usual, was great.) when a man came out of the restrooms and sat at the table behind us. He was disheveled, filthy, and stunk. He also had a wild, crazed look about him. He was obviously on drugs and high as a kite. In short succession he got up repeatedly and roamed around the restaurant multiple times. He plowed through the garbage can, carried on a loud conversation with no one since he was alone, all the while touching everything he could find, including the napkins, the peanuts, all the buttons on the soft drink machine etc. I was shocked that no employee addressed this. This man then hit me in the back while I sat at the table eating. I immediately went up and asked for the manager to remove him. She informed me he was a regular, yes, you read that right, and had paid for his meal and she wasn't going to do that. I informed her of his antics and that he had struck me in the back. I also told her this was no longer a safe situation, it had ruined our meal and she needed to address this right now.. She went over and whispered in his ear and he left. Only to turn around and come right back in. We left immediately. When I spoke with Five Guys corporate i was in for an even bigger shock. They couldn't have cared any less. In fact, the gentleman I spoke with had the same apathetic attitude as the restaurant manager. Needless to say, we won't ever be going back. I am posting this as a warning to others.
