Heard a lot of buzz about this place and decided to try it. I'd give it 3.5 stars. Here's how I compare it to other burger joints: Better than IN-N-OUT? No. Still my favorite. Better than the Habit? No, but close Better than Burger King/Mickey D's: Absolutely. 5 Guys' buns are pretty plain, like what you'd get at a supermarket. I was expecting more spongy freshness like IN N OUT. The grilled onions were good, but I didn't taste the fresh crunch of the lettuce or juiciness in the tomatoes. Yeah, its a ok place for a burger, but I'm not going to go out of my way to get here. After spending New Years Eve on stage with Eric and Nick V from the Baka Boyz at Mai Tai Bar in Long Beach, I wake up fully dressed and in my cousins living room. I am not completely sure how I got there or what happened after Midnight struck the night before, but I am glad that I arrived to my cousin's house safe and none of my kidneys have been harvested and sold on the black market. I stumble to the Kitchen to get a glass of water and In comes my Cousin who just got back from the after party. Then It hits me, My sister drove me home from the bar last night! and what does my sister love to eat that is within a 2 mile radius of my cousins house? FIVE GUYS BURGERS! I wash the Tom Foolery of last nights activities off and set out to find the infamous Burger joint. Located at the South Bay Pavilion in Carson this location has a nice outdoor patio that would be great to sit in to soak up the New Years day sunlight, but it was frankly too bright for me in my current condition. The first thing i notice as I walk in is the smell of fresh beef being seared on flat top grills and the sound of peanuts being cracked open for consumption. I am greeted with a simple menu and a slew of tasty toppings that I can adorn my burger with: I proceed to order. Bacon Burger with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, extra pickles, and A-1 sauce (frankly the best thing you can put on a fresh ground beef burger), and a side of fries with a shake of their Cajun Seasoning. As I sit and wait for my Order I cant help but notice that the red and white checkered tile theme they have going on looks strikingly familiar to In-N-Out's decor, minus the cheesy pictures of 50's diners, car hops and hot rods. Instead the Walls are plastered with business oriented magazines and quotes from the "Washington Post" etc. My best guess is that one of the five guys who started it all is some sort of self made millionaire or something. My number is called and a server hands me a grease spotted bag that I can only imagine is Full Of Win. They only offer their patties well done, even though served medium-rare or medium would be the best!, but the burger was not over cooked or dry at all. The bacon is a little thicker so it gets a bit chewy and has a nice smoky flavor but the grilled onions and mushrooms really set this burger off! Grilled onions works really well with the meatiness of the beef and mushrooms. Crisp lettuce helps change up the texture and lightens everything up along with the snap of the pickles, and the tomatoes where not mushy at all and had some sweetness to them as well. The fries are fresh cut and nice and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and skin on so they have some nutritional value to them! Dipped in A-1 sauce, mustard, or ketchup I found the fries to be the perfect side for this burger, and they are not shy with the helping of fries either. Feeling better as I begin to finish my meal washed down with a coke and a powerade (I needs me electrolytes!) I think to my self, "what a great great first meal of 2011" Now I'm ready to hit Bar West in Pacific Beach SD. Little did I know I would be greeted by yet another Five Guys Burger Establishment. Peanuts don't taste like anything, Cajun fries look good but aren't that tasty, but their burgers are pretty good. I like that you can add as many toppings as you like without having to pay extra. I believe I got mine with lettuce, cheese, jalapeno, bbq sauce, and grilled onions. Overall it was pretty good, and if I was choosing between this burger and In n Out, I'd save 5 guys (because of the wider variety of toppings). read more

This is place is very similar to in-n-out in my opinion, only difference is, BACON. Plus the free nuts, take it as you will, it's a one of a kind place with those kind of burgers their servin'. The decor is very diner-ish and with the mix of the location makes this place an ideal burger joint. However, it gets a little cramp when business starts picking up, so be ready for lines!! The burgers are a little hyped up, especially with all the newspaper pages surrounding the restaurant of being an acclaimed, "Best burger in town." I would disagree because even though there burgers are fresh, I still don't taste the difference between a burger you can make your self or theirs... It always leaves me with a hazy thought about coming back to the place... Either way I'd still see my self getting that Bacon cheese burger with cajun fries and eating FREE peanuts while I wait. I see a lot of comparisons against in and out. In and out has a bigger menu I think. These guys keep it all simple, peanuts, burgers, frys, and soda. If your looking to get a good burger and some great fries. This is mos def, the place to go. After eating here I could see myself choosing this place over in and out any day of the week. I just discovered this place and it's sooooooo good... It's WAY better than In-N-Out and cheap...Plus they give you options on what you want to put on your burger including grilled mushrooms! They have a basic menu (hamburgers, hotdogs, grilled cheese, veggie burger). The CAJUN FRIES are a must. There are peanuts by the door and they are free. Wel, my daughter, who loves tasty food as I do, turned me on to this place in the Carson Mall. She said on her Facebook page (and I quote) "It was Da Bidness"!!! So today, I decded to see what all the fuss was about with the Mrs. She got a single patty burger and regular fries. I got a bacon Cheeseburger with Mayo, relish & grilled onions. Actually, I got two-in case it WAS "all that". Took it all home and ate it like I was on Death Row. In a word-excellent! Very fresh, homemeade and tasty. Meat wasn't over cooked, it was juicy, fat but not overly greasy. The Cajun Fries were also excellent. Like In and Out, they smartly have a very lean menu. Service was very good. The guy explained how to order if you are a first timer. Any combo of garnishes are included. Bottom line: Is it a better burger than In & Out? To me, I'd say yes. In the words of Samuel L. When I say three, I mean a generous three. Like a 3.5. Don't get me wrong. These burgers are pretty freaking delicious. And the cajun fries are the best. First... the initial comparison. In-n-out vs. five guys -- my vote still goes to in-n-out. Also, with five guys i was very surprised that their standard burger came with two meat patties. As a somewhat small girl, I really do not need two meat patties. Thus, this meal ended for me with a huuuge stomach ache. I do like five guys though, and I like it a lot. When I go back I would certainly be careful to order an extra-small burger. It's something different and it deviates from other burgers... it's a heftier one with more of a meaty punch. I can appreciate that, sure. It's maybe less my style overall but that certainly does not mean these burgers aren't good burgers. They are. Alright here it goes.......The first time i tried I didn't know they put grilled mushrooms or grilled onions, both of which i'm not fond of, however on this burger it wasn't at all what i expected. The first couple of bites had tons of flavor but towards the end it was a little bland. Still a very good burger, it did not help much that i had just gobbled down a clif bar, so my "Beast-hunger" mode wasn't fully initiated. My second visit to Five guys led me to their hot dog and Cajun fries, of which i thought were incredible! i loved the cajun fries, if it is anything i love the most about this restaurant it would be the cajun fries. In all, i believe their burgers don't carry the weight and lack some flavor, perhaps adding BBQ sauce or some condiment of that nature to give the burger a bit of a kick. This place is great. Great tasting burgers. Great tasting fries. Good prices. Clean establishment. Very friendly service. This place is just amazing. When a burger place is opened in California, it will always be compared to In-n-Out, and it will always fall just short. I'm not going to say that I like this place better than In-n-Out because I don't. But this is a very close 2nd place not just because of the taste but because of the many options it gives you that In-n-Out doesn't. Adding different types of peppers, sauces, and toppings such as bacon is something that In-n-Out doesn't offer. You can also order other dishes such as hot dogs. There are times when I am craving a Five Guys burger above In-n-Out. If I am just craving a regular hamburger with fries, I will go to the nearest In-n-Out. But if I am craving something with A1 sauce, or jalapeños, or bacon, then I am going to the nearest Five Guys. read more

In my mind, a bit overrated and for the price you're paying, and definitely not better than In N Out, Shake Shack, The Standing Room, or even a Big Mac. Plus, the lines are long. All for what I ask? For around $5, you can have a burger made to your liking. However, the burger itself is quite small, and if you end up requesting a bunch of toppings, the buns will be soggy from the heat/condiment mixture inside the aluminum foil. The fries were a bit overcooked and soggy. I wish they were crispy. The only nice addition were the seasoned salt to the fries. The inside of the restaurant was a bit too loud for my liking. However, providing shelled peanuts while waiting for your food is a nice addition, although I hate salted peanuts. read more

Maybe my taste has changed? For some reason the Five Guys burgers just aren't as good over here.. - I want some dang fries! But if I order fries, I feel like I'm spending too much. Pretty much $10 for a burger and fries. Their fries portion is huge though, so more than enough to share between two. I wish they would have a small sized fry for cheaper. - Last but not least, I HATE this mall/parking lot. Try coming here during lunch time, and you'll see why. I drove out to Carson City for the "in-n-out killer" Five Guys Burgers, pictured above. A few things you couldn't know about this place before you arrive. (1) It has sacks of potatoes used to make the fries lying all around the dinning room as design/barriers/storage...weird in a not-so-cool way (2) You have to order everything you want on your burger...including lettuce (3) All burgers are doubles...really...I have a cholesterol problem and you serve me two patties? (4) The burgers are wrapped in foil...crushing them, making the bun look like it was bruised on by the playground bully: french-bread (5) Fries suck...really The burger is made with chuck and not sirloin to add a higher fat content for a juicer patty. The patty tastes like it is higher in fat, but then again, there were two of them! Geez. Irritating to order ALL of your toppings. At least lettuce, tomato, and onion should be standards. The staff was ehh, so-so, but they were actually quite slow at preparing the burgers. Something about the craziness of the in-n-out kitchen adds to the anticipation that you're about to eat CA's best burger. Fries here taste like oiled up potato wedges from high school. Not crunchy, crisp, flavorful, naddah. Also, stay away from Cajun fries, taste like regular crappy fries (not even really hot) but with tons of Tony Chachere's on 'em. My vote stays with in-n-out. 1) Free peanuts. Sounds silly but they're actually good and a nice snack if you're starving. 2) Fries: excellent 3) Burgers: free toppings, a plus (e.g., mushrooms, grilled onions, japapeños...). Now, plus or minus, the burgers taste like a higher than fast food quality burger (though they are kinda on the very well done side, therefore not very tender), whereas other fast food burgers like a double double or big mac have their own distinct taste. 4) Cons: since these are made to order, you don't get your food super quick, but it is made to order. Biggest con is that there are no trays for dining in, which sounds like it isn't such a big deal, cos it isn't, until you have to clean up when you're done ;) 5) Last pro: they have malt vinegar! read more

I fell in love with Five Guys on a trip to Virginia. I had heard there was one in California for a long time but I never got around to going but as soon as I stepped of the plane from Virginia I drove in the complete opposite direction of my house for a burger. Yes, I'm a fan. Sadly, I was disappointed. While the food was of the same quality in Virginia, it was the drink selection that let me down. I know it's California blasphemy but I like this place better than In-N-Out and let me explain why. The meat. In-N-Out and Five Guys both use high quality meet BUT Five Guys patties are bigger for the price. 4 stars for the bacon cheeseburger. Top notch burger. Love all of the choices of toppings you can put on your burger at no extra cost. Big burger, fresh ingredients and vegetables. Small menu, similar to in and out but with a little more variety (hot dogs, wide variety of toppings for your burger, and 2 kinds of fries) but I think a better burger overall. Place was packed, free peanuts while you wait, big bags of potatoes stacked by the counter so you know their fresh. I wasn't blown away by the fries. HUGE portion and I got the small, couldn't imagine being able to eat 1/3 of the large. I had heard all of the hype/praise for them and I was a little let down. I got the cajun fries and they were good but nothing special (3 stars). I did screw up by not seeing the malt vinegar until I was finished. I know people have drawn numerous comparisons between Five Guys and In n Out, but I prefer judging on its own merit. And let me tell you, Five Guys definitely stands on its own. I have eaten both and Bacon Cheeseburger and a Hot Dog at Five Guys and both were absolutely delicious. The Burger patty was juicy and tender, the ingredients like lettuce and tomato crisp and fresh. I chose to have my Cheeseburger all the way, which includes a myraid of toppings such as mustard, grilled onions, tomatoes and other assorted ingedients. Some might think all the ingredients together would be too much, but it worked for this behemouth burger. It also went well witht he Hot Dog, with is sliced in half and grilled to perfection. The French fries come hot, well seasoned and plenty of them. A large feeds two people no problem. The free peanuts are always a welcome addition. Music is great too. This overall location is fairly new, and the place is still new looking. They keep it clean, effecient and well run. To sum up, I was unsure about Five Guys before I went to one, I can say now I'm a Die Hard fan. read more

I've heard so much hype about this place from friends, so the family and I finally decided to try it out. Usually I'm happy with having a wide variety of choices, but I think this time it worked against us. There is a good selection of items that you can add to your burger, but it definitely can lead to condiment overkill. My biggest disappointment with the burger was the bun. To us it just seemed to take over the burger. It seemed doughy and overpowering. The fries were just okay, nothing spectacular. It's been a few months since we've gone, and I don't really see us going back anytime soon. I will give it a second chance eventually, as I've had a couple friends say the burger combo they came up with was awesome. It just didn't work out that way for any of us that day. read more

Went here because my friend recommended me this place. I did hear all the hype about it as well so I finally drove down to try it out. It really wasn't what I hoped for and maybe because my friends made it seem like it was going to be one of the best burgers I had in my life but it wasn't. There are plenty of burgers that are much better then here. It good for what it is, a fast food burger. Its somewhere between a Carls Jr burger and an In-and-Out Burger. I was really surprised when I first went here. This is apparently an East Coast chain. They give you free peanuts to snack on while you wait. They have gotten much better than when they first opened as far as how smooth the ordering process goes. All of the burgers are doubles, unless you get a mini, which is a single patty. They have a huge assortment of toppintgs, you can get the default toppings by saying you want what is in blue. I woulld not recommend getting it with everything because there are just way too many toppings and you will ruin your burger. The taste is great. The patty is freshly formed not the premade stuff. It has the taste of In-N-Out but much meatier. Also the fries are more heavily seasoned and they give you tons; they put a huge scoop and then put whatever they can onto a small cup. Some thigns I would do better, would be to toast the bun a bit. By the time you get your aluminum wrapped burger, it is already a bit soggy. read more

I became a fan of this place after a visit to DC. 5 Guys can easily be compared as the In and Out of the East. However, the food can not be compared. 5 Guys do not keep a single freezer on location. Everything is fresh! The burger patty is a bit larger than the I&O patty and the choice of toppings blows away the option of animal style. Plenty of toppings available at no charge to truly customize your burger. The Fries are available as regular or cajun, which have been tossed in a dry cajun seasoning. The potatoes are hand cut and upon ordering, you will notice a sign informing you of where the potatoes for the fries are coming from. My most recent visit brought potatoes from Moses Lake, WA. 5 Guys is quick, but not fast food level. There is no drive though. If you happen to get stuck in a line, they offer free peanuts to keep you busy. I would recommend not filling up on the nuts. Give this place a try! read more

When I read that Zagat gave this place the crown over In-N-Out I was definitely going to check it out. The first time I went, I wasn't really all that impressed. Burger was good, fries were okay. I decided that if I was going to give this place a fair shake, I had to go back a couple more times. This is a good burger and worthy of praise, but it does not compete with In-N-Out. Five Guys is a mall restaraunt. In-N-Out is a drive-thru. Saying that Five Guys is better than In-N-Out is like saying that Fatburger or Red Robin are better than McDonalds. There's room for both to be of worthy mention, but in the realm of fast food drive-thru chains, In-N-Out is still the king. As far as sit-down/take-out burger places, it's quite good and affordable. For what you get versus what you pay, it's definitely hard to beat. Though, it's more expensive than In-N-Out and rightfully so. Not because of how they taste, but the varied choices of fresh toppings you have and the real estate costs a ton. My favorite part of the burger is that the ingredients are top-shelf quality. After all the hoop LAh and hype in the media I have heard from others, I was dissapointed in the quality of the burger and the french fries especiallly. Definately not better than In -n- out. lets start with the burger, good -not bad but no crust.(AND I OBSERVED THE COOK SQUISHING THE PATTY ON THE GRILL,BAD COOK!) the fries were a great dissapointment, while I love fresh cut fries (I wont eat anything else)these were I am guessing not blanched first as they were dark brown and soggy ,slightly underdone on the inside... They makes pretty good burger I find it pricey but well worth it. There fries are seasoned well, and there shakes are not bad at all.

I can't say enough good things about this place. All burgers are extremely fulfilling. So generous with the fries and the customer service is great. If anyone cares for a comparison between in n out and five guys, this is my honest opinion. In n out patties keep getting smaller and smaller. And every time after eating a double double from in n out I feel tired and this heavy fullness in my stomach. Five guys however has much larger burgers and for some reason never leave me feeling tired or lazy after. I feel good and satisfied. I love that the patties are huge and all burgers come with 2 patties. If you order a "Small burger" it will come with just one patty and it's still so fullfiling. The meat is juicy and fresh. And you can add mushrooms grilled onion and other veggies for free with any burger. All in all Five guys have become my go-to for hamburgers. People have complained about he price but for what you get, IT IS WORTH IT!!! read more
