My husband and I had a really bad experience today at Five Guys. At approximately 4pm, we arrived at five guys and ordered our burgers and fries. I found a table to occupy while my husband went to get the napkins & ketchup for us at the condiment stand. The ketchup container was out of ketchup so he told this young man Luis M., who was the nearest person behind the counter nearby. Luis just stood there with a blank face and stared at my husband for about 6 seconds and never said a word. My husband was looking at him waiting for a response, which he never got. So, he went to the cashier who was a very nice young lady. He told her about the ketchup container and she gave him a few of the to-go containers of ketchup because there were a few people in line waiting to place their orders. We got our order and while we were eating my husband mentioned to me about Luis M. staring and ignoring him. I told my husband, maybe there is a communication problem. He said, "Oh, maybe you're right." Well, here comes this Caucasian lady who placed her order and went to retrieve ketchup from the condiment stand. Just like us, she told the nearest person which was still Luis M. and he came from behind the counter to help her get ketchup for her meal. She said, "Thanks" and proceeded to sit down. I notice this and felt really bad and felt like I should bring this to Luis M. attention as well as the supervisor, which I did. I wanted to know why he refused to help my husband but was willing to help another person. I also wanted him to know that Five Guys is probably expecting him to have better customer service. Hoping that he would understand and apologize, but he didn't. HIs exact word was "If you don't like it, don't come back." I asked the Manager nicely for his name because I was going to call corporate and complain. She didn't want to give it to me until I asked her again while on the phone with the corporate office and he could actually hear me asking her. She gave me his first name and even spelled out his last name. While I was finishing up my conversion outside, my husband overheard one of the other employees ask what happened and the Manager said that Luis is having one of his bad days again. We often visit Five Guys and have done this for about 2 years. We had enjoyed every moment of our visit in the past and even enjoyed the young people that service us because they were alway courteous, happy, and seem to enjoy their jobs. They had a system behind that counter that was awesome and didn't go unnoticed. Today, I have to say "No more Five Guys in Alameda, CA for us." My husband and I are both African American. I work in a Customer service atmosphere and have done so for 26yrs. My husband, who is a Deacon is a blue collar worker and has been on his job for 30 yrs. You can't make it this far with that kind of attitude on your job. read more
