2990 E 9th St Oakland, CA 94601 This is the Ono Hawaiian BBQ at Oakland's Fruitvale Station shopping center. It shares the parking lot with Food Maxx. I was there on a Monday evening around 7:30pm. My job finished up in the area, and I dropped by to see if it was still open. A quick peek at the Yelp listing for Ono Hawaiian BBQ showed it was open, and had an avg review score. Well, I had a craving for BBQ chicken, so let's give this place a try. As I walked in, the dining area was clean with a modern decor. There were only a few customers eating, but the kitchen crew looked super busy. The young lady who took my order was very polite and friendly. I ordered a BBQ Chicken meal w/ rice, macaroni salad, and veggies (cabbage). Meal #1: Hawaii BBQ Chicken $13.99 + .10 (bag)+ sales tax= $15.52 My order took about 10-mins to prepare. While I was waiting, I walked around and took some pics. As a former restaurant shift mgr, I look for quality, cleanliness, service, and organization. Food, Grade (4/5): Nice big slabs of tender and juicy marinated chicken. The meat was boneless, skinless and easy to cut. The rice was a little on the dry side. The macaroni salad was okay. There's lots of cabbage and pieces of broccoli under the chicken. So there's your balanced meal. Service, Grade (4/5): Nice, polite and professional. She took the time to take my order while they had lots of delivery orders to handle. However, no suggestive selling. Cleanliness, Grade (4/5): This restaurant looks very clean and neat. However, while I was waiting at the counter, I could see behind the counter and into the kitchen. There were (what looked like) empty barrels of soy sauce sitting on the floor. It looked messy. Look, I used to be a grill cook. It can get hot and hectic in that kitchen. Empty containers should be pushed to the back, and away from where customers can see. Overall, a good experience and I will return. This review is based on food fresh from the kitchen, and not delivery. Support Local Business!

Aloha plate Hawaiian BBQ Beef

I've seen the Ono Hawaiian BBQ restaurants, but I've never had the chance to try their food until recently. In fact, I've gotten food twice in the past couple weeks. I placed orders online for pickup on both occasions. This store is located in the left side of the Fruitvale Station mall on E 9th St next to 880. The restaurant is modern, bright, and clean with a good amount of tables available for indoor dining. On both occasions I had pickups for 6:30pm and my orders were ready. Online pickup are on the right side of the L-shaped counter. There are containers for you to fill up teriyaki and katsu sauce for your food. I ordered one entrée Aloha Plates on both visits. It includes your choice of entrée with three scoops of rice with a side of fresh mix salad with house dressing. You can elect all salad with no rice or all rice with no salad. Wish the Aloha plate combos had the macaroni salad as an option. The entrees tried with the Aloha plated ordered: Hawaiian BBQ Chicken - two large pieces of marinated chicken thighs that was tender and moist. The teriyaki sauce went well with it. Hawaiian BBQ Beef - thin slices of marinated beef. It was moist and flavorful. Used a little teriyaki sauce with it. Chicken Katsu - the chicken cutlet had a panko coating and deep fried to a deep golden brown. The chicken was thin and since it was deep fried golden brown it was actually a little too crispy hard to my liking. The mix salad was shredded iceberg lettuce, cabbage, julienned carrots, black sesame seeds and edamame. It was an ok salad that needed more dressing. Friendly service. With the three entrees tried, two were good and one was ok. A decent option for Hawaiian food. 3.5 stars.

Crispy chicken, juicy chicken and tender beef. Great mix for a great price. I can eat a gallon of the macaroni salad.

Are y serious ONO 5$ for this is beyond crazy! You got to do more better!

Wow $4.89 plus tax dollar for this of Mac salad. Common smh. This has to be a wrong amount for that price. I think 2 scoops. Now I might be blind but nah. ‍

Omg i am so sad I love Hawaiian bbq but this Location is different So first there was no macaroni salad, no steamed cabbage and the chicken was similar to school lunch teriyaki chicken ... I also don't know if they added the bbq chicken or just teriyaki because it not distinctive at all The sale wasn't bad but I wasn't expecting.. its served with black sesame seeds and a Asian zinger dressing similar to the bagged salads .. the rice is steamed under the meat But the staff was incredibly polite !!! They are they 2 stars.. I will continue going to the Castro Valley location

Kalua Pork Island Fire Chicken

I ordered the island fire chicken and the kalua pork as an aloha plate. This was my first time so I didn't realize there wouldn't be Mac salad with my dish but I didn't need it! The food was really good! The island fire was spicy but sooo delicious. The service was great! Quick and the person that took my order was kind. I feel like I found a hidden gem. One photo I mixed it around so you could see the rice underneath the meat!

I came here with my bf and family as someone was craving Hawaiian BBQ. It was my first experience here and it was quite pleasant. This place is located in Alameda Landing plaza where there's plenty of options! We pulled up right in front of the location and there was plenty of parking. We entered the store and they had a large menu right above the register area. They have plenty of options but I figured the best deal was the family deal to feed 4. For the family meal we get to order 3 types of meat, and it comes with a mac salad and rice. Everyone wanted the chicken katsu so we ordered one of those, a bbq chicken and a spicy chicken. I have to say the fan favorite was the katsu. Personally I felt like there was a lot of spicy chicken, a lot of BBQ chicken, and the katsu seemed to be the smallest out of the three. My favorite was definitely the katsu and spicy chicken. The mac salad was amazing as well! It came with plenty of price and the total came out to be under $50. We had 5 adults eating and one teenager, we still ended up taking back 2 boxes of chicken for leftovers! All in all great food, huge portions, and definitely worth the money! They also have a sauce bar for katsu sauce and chicken teriyaki. Both sauces were amazing! Definitely would go back there again to get my Hawaiian BBQ fix!

While spending Father's Day with my boy, we stopped into Ono for lunch. Pretty full with folks with church clothes and little kids smiling. Nice to see! I ordered a mixed plate of teriyaki chicken and steak topped with pork katsu. My big boy had the katsu and island fire chicken. Each plate lunch comes with rice, macaroni salad, and cabbage/broccoli. The food was piled high in a eco-friendly carry out box. So high it's hard to navigate the different items. Still, it was delicious and enough to take home leftovers. I asked for a bag and was told it was 10 cents. I said I tipped $5 on a $40 meal. She smiled and gave me a bag. Lost a star for there is no gravy offered. True locals know "it's all about the gravy!" No loco moco on the menu either.

My favorite was the mac & cheese and brussels sprouts. The meats were so tender! Although, I tried a piece of pork link, for some reason, I didn't like it. It seemed too grainy. The ambience was chill, and they have full bar. Nice and spacious. My only complaint is that I was trying to order & the phone rings & the host took the call. What I learned in customer service in my 20 years +, you attend to the customer in front of you first. Phone calls can wait. When she got off the phone, other workers came over and they started talking about what's next in their schedule. Still, I'm over here, waiting to order the rest of the stuff. That what the unprofessional part of things.. Glad we still came here to try. It still earned a star to come back!

Super awesome. The kitchen is wide open. Everything was super clean and well put together. Service - 5/5 Great recommendations from the staff. The house slaw and banana pudding were clearly popular choices, and they definitely knew what they were doing when guiding the order. I told them it's my first time. These were what they recommended me. One of the staff actually gave a piece of brisket to try. Very nice of them to give a free sample before I order so I know what I'm expecting. Food - 4.5/5 Dish Ordered: Dino Rib, Brisket ( 1/2 lb), House Slaw, Banana Pudding 5/5 Dino Rib Wow. This was the highlight. The meat was unbelievably tender--every single part of it. Usually with ribs, especially the upper portions, you get some toughness or dryness depending on how it's smoked. Not here. This one was melt-in-your-mouth soft, juicy throughout, and you could practically pull it apart effortlessly. The seasoning was perfect--balanced, not too salty, not bland, just right. Every bite hit. 4/5 Brisket ( 1/2 lb) About two slices. Visually, it looked great--nice color, juicy, with a solid fatty portion. But after eating the Dino rib, it felt a bit underwhelming. Still good, just didn't hit as hard flavor-wise. Might be better appreciated on its own next time. 5/5 House Slaw This paired extremely well with the meat. Sweet, tangy, and refreshing. The hint of peanuts adds a nice nutty layer that makes it stand out. It cuts through the richness of the meat perfectly. 5/5 Banana Pudding Not your typical pudding--it's more like a banana cake. The sweetness not too overwhelming, smells amazing, and just hits the spot. A great way to finish the meal. Additional Comments The Dino rib alone makes this place worth it. It sets a very high bar, which honestly makes everything else feel secondary. The best Rib I have ever had in my life so far. Important thing to note is that the rib will be weighed. I don't think you can ask to get the portion you want like you can with the brisket. My Dino rib came out to be 1.6lb. The sides and dessert complement the meal really well and round out the experience. Price is bit is definitely in the higher end but the experience is definitely worth it.

Son wanted to try so we are here…read more The line was long, the selection limited but the taste was good. There were many big orders, likely for parties. A $300 order can fit nicely into a regular paper grocery bag with room to spare, so make sure your wallet is mentally prepared so it does not go into shock. We had a sandwich. A pound of brisket and some baby back. My advice... unless you really want to suck the gravy off the bones or want to bring gift to your canine friend, don't get anything with bones as everything is by weight and I don't know about you, I can't chew on the bones. After close to $80, I had some meat off the rib and a piece of brisket, and craving some instant noodles ... The place is very transactional and noisy. But that is how it should be with a busy place where majority of orders are to-go.

And let me tell you... when I got home and opened that bag, I was honestly blown away. My food was packaged with so much care, precision, and pride--it was neat, organized, and handled like it actually mattered. That alone told me everything about the level of service in that building. Candalen--YOU DID THAT. The attention to detail on my plate did not go unnoticed. You treated my food like it was being served in-house, and that speaks volumes about your work ethic and pride in what you do. Aaron--listen... that peach lemon drop??? BABY. That was my first time trying one and it was EVERYTHING. Smooth, flavorful, perfectly balanced--you made that drink an experience all by itself. I will be back JUST for that. And let's talk about the vibe--the music, the energy, the atmosphere--it all came together in a way that made the entire visit feel GOOD. Not just food... a whole experience. But what really stands out is this: It has been a LONG time since I've experienced service this genuine, this intentional, and this excellent. Not rushed, not careless--EXCEPTIONAL. Management, if you are reading this--please understand--you have some powerful people on your team. Candalen and Aaron are the kind of employees that elevate a brand. They are the reason people come back. They are the reason I will be telling others. This wasn't just a good experience. This was the kind of experience that turns customers into loyal supporters. I will absolutely be back--and I will be bringing people with me. Until next time, WUHAPN NATION

Finally, we were so excited to see it was open on a Saturday an we came in for lunch. To order you need to scan the QR code and pay plus tip before a single person spoke to us or offered us help. From the menu we saw they were out of beef ribs, smoked chicken, rib tips, no peach cobbler, no banana pudding and no kool aid. I come for their brisket and my friend loves ribs so we went ahead and ordered combo plates to share. Mine was the brisket with a side of collard greens, she had the pork ribs, a hotlink with a side of Mac-n-cheese, & cornbread. For drinks we had lemonade and an Arnold Palmer. I'm not sure what has happened over the last few months but the quality of the food, the service and the expectation to pay and tip up front were very disappointing. The greens, Mac cheese, brisket and ribs were cold. The hotlink wasn't BBQ'ed it was pan fried. Everything tasted like warmed up leftovers and we will not return. For 2 of us to eat it came to $100 and we were not satisfied. The dining room is an attractive space, it was completely empty. The staff was unclear about what we ordered, had to be told to bring our drinks, bartender is also working as server and apologized for his uncertainty. I suggest this restaurant hire and train more staff if they intend to keep their doors open.

The greens were tasty; cornbread was better than some, as it was real cornbread and not corn cake; the yams were whipped and tasted like sweet potato pie filling, but with insufficient sugar, no butter, no nutmeg, & no caramelization. My nephew, who is 15 and has a voracious appetite, wasn't a fan of any of it except the mac & cheese, cause he apparently ate all of it, so I can't comment on that dish. He kept saying the yams had nothing but cinnamon. NONE of the meats seemed to be very well seasoned, not even the links, which was very puzzling. Maybe they make their own links and just don't put in much seasoning. Ribs and links were moist, but lacked flavor. Chicken & brisket were dry, & flavorless. "When all other meats fail, grab a hot link!" Not at this spot. On the upside, sauces were on the side, and the rib flavor did improve when I dunked the ribs in the sauce This could have been one of their off days, but if the food there is like this all the time, maybe their intended market prefers low to no sodium and dried flavorless meats.

It's the kind of place you almost miss if you're not looking for it, but once you find it, you'll keep coming back. The brisket, pulled pork, and spare ribs are consistently excellent. The meat is incredibly tender, it basically melts in your mouth, and that deep, smoky flavor really seeps all the way through, not just on the surface. The sauces come on the side, and they're free, so don't be shy about asking for extra. I actually asked if there was a limit once, and the cashier laughed and said something like, "Maybe six containers?" If I'm being picky, I'd probably skip the hot links next time. They're not bad, just nothing special compared to how strong everything else is, slightly smoky, but otherwise pretty standard. The collard greens are a standout side dish. They've got this nice acidity that cuts through the richness of the meat really well. There is a noticeable vinegar tang, though, so if that's not your thing, you might want to pass, but if you like that balance, they're great. Another big bonus, there's a park right outside the building near the exit by Cashew Creamery. It's perfect if you've got kids. There's this whale structure they can climb into (through the mouth or side), with a slide on top and climbing holds all over -- fins, back, tail, the whole thing. There are also surfboard-style balance boards on springs and plenty of open space and greenery to run around. And if you're making a little outing of it, it's only about a 10-minute walk to Bay Street, so you can easily pair your meal with a stroll, some shopping, or more food and drinks nearby.
