The excellent service made our experience here. The inside is very small with about ten or so tables and a bar. The decor is cute and the windows overlook the cute street. Street parking is ample. There was only one other couple dining when we were there and they also seemed to be having a great time. The restaurant seemed very adamant about reservations being made in advance either by phone or their website (their hours are very limited, so reserving online is much easier). The food is very tasty, though the options are very limited (4 entrees and 2 specials). I believe this allows the small staff to create really delicious, fresh, and special plates. You can tell they take pride in their food and put love into everything on the plate. The vegetarian special, the eggplant parmesan, was made with quality cheese and the pasta was wildly fresh. The steak meal had the most delicious bourbon glazed carrots I've ever eaten. The menu mentions the availability of vegan alternatives. Our server was excited to talk about the ingredients and cooking process and was attentive and kind the entire meal. She really worked to ensure that everything was perfect. The restaurant is on the second floor of the building (fairly steep stairs) with one or two tables downstairs in the gift shop area, so be very mindful if accessibility is a concern. read more

While wandering through downtown and taking pictures by the waterfront, we discovered this lovely restaurant. I was struck by the interesting architecture and proposed that we take a walk, which brought us to a delightful wine bar. We were very happy we decided to go inside! This historic location has a remarkable menu; I chose the walleye and walnut salad, and my partner had the ribs. There were many other dishes I wished we could try if we had been hungrier. I had the best experience here Christmas shopping and was pleasantly surprised to encounter a tasting bar! The tasting host, Deb, was fun and engaging and recommended a delicious red (Napa Quilt) as I took a load off to break! Upstairs is a fine restaurant! I was tempted to stay and check out a meal- but I already had dinner plans... so I had a Lobster Bisque. Oof. Just perfect! Although we had dinner plans elsewhere, we stopped in for some cocktails so we could check out the menu and the atmosphere. I was so impressed with everything that I almost canceled our reservations at the other place so I could stay here. This is a combination wine shop, cocktail lounge, and restaurant. The restaurant and bar is upstairs. It is attractively decorated in a style that goes well with the historic nature of the building. There is also some seating outside. We sat at the bar. There is a large and interesting list of cocktails. I had the Fitzgerald's Flask which was a mixture of Gin, club soda, lime and cucumber served in a flask. A perfect summer cocktail! As we sipped our drinks we perused the menu. This is a small scratch kitchen and so the menu changes frequently with many daily specials. We saw some of the dishes and they looked and smelled great...next time we are staying for dinner! Of course, with a wine shop downstairs, you can easily find something nice to pair with your meal. This was our first night in Ashtabula and it's off to a great start. The restaurant was very welcoming. You could tell they were taking Covid very seriously and gave us a tour of the place and where we wanted to sit. Lots of options inside and out with plenty of room for social distancing. The house wine was very good and many other choices if you wanted a nice bottle. The menu had good choices and daily specials. I had the special beet salad and a chicken bacon flatbread. Hubby had linguini with two huge yummy meatballs The service was prompt and the food came out quickly. . For dessert, a chocolate assortment from the shop across the street and another glass of wine. Food is always consistent and it's a scratch kitchen with no freezers. They have a private label Cabernet from Napa Valley that rivals high dollar wines at the wine shops. This place is very nice to visit while in Ashtabula's main downtown area on Bridge st. The wines selections is personally picked and getting 3 samples for $10 is a good deal. The inside has a sleek style of modern/ chic feel with both a inside and outside seating area. Their wines change periodically so have the wait staff tell you a bit about each wine. If you are looking for a good place to visit for a nice date or quiet atmosphere this is a great choice! read more

I wanted to like the place. We got there for a 5:15 reservation because they were going to be really busy at 6, which turned out to be a baby shower with 6 people. Hardly busy. Very slow service. Ordered my steak medium rare and it came out well done. Unfortunately couldn't notify the waiter of this because she didn't even come within sight for the entirety of my meal. I ate 3/4 of it and then she finally came out. I told her what was wrong and just got an apathetic-sounding "sorry." I asked her to take it back to the chef so they knew I wasn't lying. She came back and said it wasn't the chef's fault...the other waiter rang it in wrong. The manager told her yo say, "I'm sorry. It will never happen again. Couple of things here.. 1) it will never happen again because I'm not coming back 2) don't pass it off as your manager's apologies. Own it. You are the face of the restaurant. 3) mistakes happen, but this is why you come back to check on the table after a couple of minutes. If a restaurant can't handle 1 table of 6 and 2 tables of 2, then they really shouldn't be operating. It was my anniversary dinner and wanted to go somewhere nice. We didn't stay for dessert because we didn't want to give them any more of our money after paying for a fairly high-end priced dinner. read more

Sat down. "Your server will be right out. " Two people walk in and sit down behind us, get immediate service. We ask for a server, or a menu... "your server will be right out. We are reprinting the dinner menu". Huh? Ok, so server brings drinks to the two behind and we look longingly. She takes pity on us and brings us a wine menu. Two more people come in, sit to our right. They have silverware, we don't... Long story short, 15 minutes. No water. No drinks. No silverware. No service. The woman serving the other table brought us two wine menus but didn't want anything to do with us. And the other mystical "he" never came out to even greet us. No manager, no nothing. We walked off the patio. At Restaurant next door. Drinks on the way, food ordered, kind attentive service. Can't imagine going back to Fitzgerald's again. Sorry. You lost some customers. read more

We drove in from Erie PA to check this spot out and it did not disappoint! The outside greeted us with music playing along the street. The indoor gift and wine shop was adorable. The real gem, though, is the upstairs dining room. Everything we tasted was delicious! We ordered the bread and oil, a giant meatball, the salmon and chicken Alfredo. The bread was perfect and the oil delicious. The meatball was fork tender and 4oz! The Salmon was the best I've ever tasted, it was cooked to perfection. The pasta was fresh and the Alfredo sauce was light and balanced. We can't wait to come back and try more! read more

Went there last night (Tuesday) we were not aware that Tuesdays are by reservation only due to the pandemic. Owner was there and seated us anyway. The food was incredible as always and she allowed us to finish our drinks while closing up. The service is very friendly and the staff can answer any questions you may have about the menu. I will not be back. Anniversary dinner ruined! I am allergic to mushrooms and told our waitress when I ordered my rare steak with no mushrooms. My husband ordered his steak medium well. First my steak came out with mushrooms. I again said I am allergic and had said no mushrooms. She said she didn't hear me. A minute later she was back with my replated steak. Obviously the mushrooms had just been removed. So I had a steak that had come into close contact with mushrooms. I cut into my steak and discovered it was medium well. My husband's was medium rare. The other items were very good though. I am still here at the restaurant. I have a gift certificate for $10 off my next visit and a free Bruschetta that I will not be using. My husband and I had a fantastic dinner, including a completely from-scratch vegan mushroom risotto made for me which I sincerely appreciated and enjoyed, as it was not even on the menu. He had a mouth-watering pork chop that he said tasted like prime rib. All the sides were hot, delicious, and beautifully presented. The entire experience was high-end and extremely pleasant. I write damning reviews rarely and with a bit of sadness- but Fitzgerald's is so deserving. The restaurant's bungling ruined not just our group's dinner out, but several other would-be diners that, like us, walked out without ever getting our entrees. After the 6 of us we were seated our server took our drink orders. She was pleasant, but had no knowledge of some very basic wine and liquor questions. One person in our group asked if the bar had Limoncello for a Lemon Drop martini and she stated "isn't that a dessert?"! Didn't know what Prosecco was. When she took our orders for drinks and later appetizers, she wouldn't write it down, then would come back and have us repeat our orders! This happened several times to the point we suggested she write it down! Didn't check back with us for long periods of times (30+ minutes - drinks empty, water, ordering, etc.) But our table service paled in comparison to the kitchen. We could see a lot of anger and frustration between the servers, cooks and managers. Other diners started walking out. Nearly 3 hours from sitting down and well over an hour from ordering our entrees, we were told we weren't close to getting our food. The manager comped our appetizers and we paid for our drinks and left. Buyer beware! read more

I recently had a wonderful experience at Fitzgerald's Wine Bar. The restaurant is very warm and inviting and captures the historic feel that Bridge Street represents. The staff was very welcoming and the owner was engaged with the customers, making sure everyone was taken care of and food was to our liking. And the food! Our meal was really exceptional! I had a white fish that was fresh and wonderfully prepared. My husband had the steak and loved it! Deb, the owner helped us select wines and we were not disappointed! This was our first visit. The food was very good, as was the service. I had a seared tuna salad and my husband had chicken picatta. Both delicious! My only hesitation are these: The entrance is a little awkward when you come off the harbor side. We entered a room that was empty. We waited a few minutes then walked upstairs - where at the top was a table at which people were eating. (Perhaps there's usually someone downstairs and they were just short staffed that night?) Also, for a wine bar, the wine selection by the glass was limited. 2nd visit. Still awkward entrance with no one downstairs. They were very busy. Service was slow but food was excellent! Third visit- waitress was new and had not been trained. She was very nice and we liked her a lot. She was trying! We ordered, a shaved prime rib dish, a beet salad and a side of pasta. We were brought a side beet salad and a what looked like a side of pasta without shrimp for our vegetarian in the family. We were charged full price for a shrimp pasta, $22. When I objected, a guy came over and said he would take two dollars off the pasta since we didn't get the shrimp. When I explained that if I had ordered shrimp on something they would've charged me appreciably more than two dollars, and I didn't think two dollars was a reasonable deduction and we didn't order a full plate of pasta. We ordered a side of pasta. He then adjusted the check to a price that we thought was reasonable. He gave me a free coupon for a bruschetta. As we were paying he said that the owner, who was 50 miles south at an event, had heard about our concerns and wanted to call me. He intimated that she either had a microphone or a camera in the building. Yes, quite creepy in either case. They asked for my phone number which I gave them. 36 hours later, no call. I spent the whole weekend worrying about the waitress, who was very nice, but obviously not trained. That's on the manager. Also, the prime rib dish was odd, at best. Shaved prime rib, not trimmed for fat, in dough, with brie on the side. I thought it would be like beef Wellington but it was more like a Philly Cheesesteak with good cheese wrapped in strips of a crescent roll. read more

The food is amazing and they have several different wines, cocktails and beers to choose from, so it's not just a wine bar. There are 2 stories, an outdoor terrace and a gift shop! Very cool. A terrific bottle of sauvignon Blanc was suggested for our dinner. I enjoyed a risotto and my husband had the walleye dinner. Generous servings at a reasonable price.
