My wife and I are members of our local fine dining club and bascules is probably our favorite restaurant on the card. We usually use both of our punches plus visit a 3rd or 4th time. We are never disappointed. This trip we tried something completely different and went the seafood route. I tried the cod special which was accompanied by an awesome Wasabi sauce. My wife tried the scallops. We never eat seafood outside of new England and this was really fantastic. We started our meal with the curry roasted cauliflower and pork belly tacos. Firsts for my husband and me started with a wonderfully tasty Shrimp & Scallop Bisque, served with fresh bread that I could have eaten all night. The service is always very welcoming and thorough in making sure everyone at the table understands the various courses and specials. I'm always excited when the server is excited by my choice! I picked out someone's choice of wine it seems - and with good reason! The Sauvignon blanc was crisp and delicious. I tried the tomato artichoke tart first and the Gruyère cheese made that dish so creamy and satisfying! We tried the roasted turmeric cauliflower which was roasted just right. I brought my friend Brady to have a great steak dinner, and we both had the Delmonico. This steak was perfect, it cut like butter, and was the most mouth watering marbled delicacy I've had in such a long time. BUT- this is Bascule Bridge, my favorite in all of Ashtabula. It's to die for from Drinks to Apps to Dinner to Dessert! Not one part is anything less than stellar! It's atmosphere is elegant, but not in an off putting way- a warm and welcoming vibe is from everyone who greets you. Now, you all know I'm a wine girl... this wine list is an amazing curation, features local wines as well as special selections from California to International treasures! I had a killer Grenache one visit, then a soft Bordeaux, but a go to is local fave Markko Chardonnay! If you get stuck (because there is SO many delicious choices on both wine list to food) your server will recommend a winner. Back again for our anniversary dinner. We started with the arrancini. Crisp and stuffed with peas and a bit of short rib, it was a great start. Next was the pea shoot salad with radishes and toasted almonds and a roasted strawberry vinaigrette. What a great summer salad! For our main course we each had one of the fish specials. I had the swordfish while my wife had the Halibut. Both came with your choice of side dishes. Both were cooked perfectly with a lemon burre blanc sauce. We paired this with a nice Spanish wine. We had a delicious meal here! We started out with a gin and house made tonic and a cucumber basil martini. Our server was friendly and prompt. Then on the the arugula salad with bacon and soft boiled egg. Very tasty. . For entrees we had the stuffed portobello (yum) and the beef bolognese. Both delicious and reasonably priced. As others have mentioned the only downfall was really that the place could have a bit more atmosphere. Never been to Ashtabula, but drove about 15 miles for the chance to dine here. This is a block away from a Bascule-type bridge that can lift up from one side boy to let ore ships pass by. Food and atmosphere is upscale, and has the usual acoustics that attempt to create noise as the f it's a happening place, but becomes difficult for conversations when Ava table for 6 becomes too lubricated and out. Steak Tartare was a standout with all the suitable accompaniments (capers, mustard,, minced onion, etc.). Raw meat was minced instead of ground into a hamburger consistency. Was hoping walleye was on the menu, but the salmon was very good. Only two small bones showed up. Fingerlings and roasted Brussels sprouts were a bit on the dry side. Didn't order dessert because I've tired of the typical quartet of offerings at high end restaurants (tiramisu, cheesecake, crème brûlée, sorbet). Plunk this place down in a Cleveland, Columbus or Cincinnati, and it's nothing all that exceptional. But I can only imagine this is a real catch for Ashtabula, a town not known for fine dining. Probably the one "big occasion" restaurant in a 40 mile radius. Tip: get an earlier than normal reservation, then show up at least an hour early to sample all the new businesses nearby. Terrific chocolates boutique, coffee hangout, another interesting restaurant (Halcyon) and 1-2 artist studios. You get the sense that being this close to big ships delivering ore, this was a tough neighborhood 5+ decades ago. But it's a promising destination today. read more

My wife and I dined with two other couples using our Erie Fine Dining Card. It was our first time at Bascule Bridge Grille. Moe was the best server that I've had in many, many years. He was courteous, prompt, knowledgeable, and an absolute pleasure to have wait on our table. The prime sirloin dinner that I had was awesome. All of our meals came out in a reasonable amount of time and were served hot. We don't usually have desert but we had to try the cheesecake. It was top notch. Fantastic! We were in the area for a little getaway and were so excited to find this amazing place. We ordered food for take out, but everything was still so yummy. We ordered mushroom toast, beef bolognese, scallops, wiener schnitzel and both the cherry and salted caramel cheesecake. Our kids are not very adventurous eaters right now, but they loved the beef bolognese, wiener schnitzel, spaetzel (we got it as a side) and the cheesecakes. My husband and I loved everything. I chose to try this restaurant for our wedding anniversary dinner. We had never been here, but the online reviews were excellent and each year we like to try a new place. It was a 40 minute drive for us but well worth it. Took a few minutes to find a parking spot in the area but we still arrived early for our reservation. We were cheerfully greeted by the hostess and immediately seated. Our waiter, Moe, soon appeared and filled our water glasses and explained the menu in great detail. He was a very pleasant young guy and seemed to know the menu inside out. We were waiting for another couple and, once they arrived he went over everything once again. They offered two types of fresh oysters on their appetizer list and he made them sound so good I had to try a couple. They are individually priced at $3 each, so it wasn't necessary to order a half or full dozen as is often the case. They were fresh and delicious. I also ordered a Moscow Mule cocktail , which they make with Gray Goose vodka, and it was the best Mule I have ever had. Just outstanding! For dinner I ordered, with Moe's recommendation, the dry aged center cut pork chop and it did not disappoint. My sides were grilled asparagus and an excellent fresh side salad with Sherry balsamic dressing. My wife ordered the butternut squash ravioli which she said was outstanding, wishing only that the portion was larger because it was so good. Our dinner included a basket of fresh and very tasty bread and an olive oil plate for dipping. For dessert we split a generous slice of cheesecake with a salted caramel drizzle that made for an excellent end to an outstanding dinner. The entire staff there was very pleasant and accommodating. The bartender delivered my Moscow Mule to the table. Our water glasses were refilled at least twice. The restaurant got very busy by 7pm and, beside our waiter, I only saw one other waitress serving. They were hustling but it made the service a bit slow. We didn't care though because the food was so good and we were conversing with our friends. Ambiance was pleasant until a large group was seated nearby and they were quite loud until their food arrived. Our waiter actually apologized for the increase in volume but we told him it was not a big deal. I would highly recommend this restaurant. We plan to return and introduce other friends. When I make reservations for those visits I will definitely ask to be seated where Moe will be our waiter. read more

It seems like a waste of time to rate a solid "5" restaurant! I can't even move the needle. But good stuff needs to be shared. We went for our 47th wedding anniversary last week. We drive up for a couple days from Columbus to enjoy the lake and The Bascule. It was just great. One of us had the Berkshire pork chop and it was insanely thick and perfectly grilled! The other was the scallop dish and it was six huge scallops perfectly cooked. All the sides were great including roasted Brussels sprouts. Crème brûlée was a great ending. Service was stellar. The Bascule Mule was interesting if a little over-gingery. Go to this place. You just can't go wrong. read more

We visited this restaurant on a Wednesday as part of Erie Fine Dining. we didn't know what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised. Our waiter was an enthusiastic young man that we took as the owner. He was not, but probably should have been. I've never experienced any server any better. He showed exceptional knowledge of the menu and made you like your choice was the perfect choice. Actually any choice would be the perfect choice. Good food and reasonably priced given the portions. This was our first time dining here and what a wonderful experience it was! Trendy, funky environment with a fun vibe. Phenomenal service from a very engaging waiter. Delicious seasonal specialty cocktails started off the evening beautifully. Bread with an outstanding dipping oil was a nice touch. Within our group, two of us had the Blue Cheese topped sirloin steak entrees, one had the filet mignon and one had the night's special - panko crusted walleye (in honor of Ashtabula's weekend Wine and Walleye Festival.) Raves from everyone about these entrees. Excellent side dishes as well, including deep fried brussel sprouts, fresh snap peas, and parsnip puree. Truly contemporary fine dining of American cuisine. Bascule Bridge Grille is easily one of the nicest and most accommodating restaurants on Bridge Street. I have always had the most pleasant experiences with the staff, whether it be at a table, at a bar, or on the phone, no matter how busy the restaurant was--which I think speaks volumes. It's easy and understandable to get overwhelmed, but the staff at Bascule handles everything in stride and with professionalism. The food and drinks, though? Those are even better. The steak?
