Fish Shack is the poor man's Pappadeaux and you can definitely taste the difference but the food is decently priced for seafood so it won't break the bank. All the dishes we ordered were pretty average. The flavors were underwhelming. Whew chile, where is the seasoning? If you're looking for super basic fried seafood then I guess Fish Shack has got you covered. I got the fried combo basket with 2 pieces of catfish, 4 pieces of shrimp, and fries. The pieces of catfish were very thin. The shrimp wasn't very flavorful. Everything needed to be submerged into tartar sauce. The fish tacos were probably the most underwhelming - literally a piece of fried fish rolled up into a tortilla. I guess you are supposed to assemble the tacos yourself. I came early enough so the line was not bad at all. I actually was the first of a handful of customers. The line can be long, but don't let that stop you from enjoying some really good fish! The Tuesday special is two pieces of catfish, two hush puppies, choice of fries, onion rings, or slaw. All this for under $10.00. I do not recommend the gumbo. I have had it several times and the mix is just not there. I think they need a new recipe. The flavor/texture is just not right. Best to stick to any of the fish, oysters, or shrimp cocktail. The food line moves quick and you might think you won't get a seat, however, you will. They ask that you order first then get a seat. They will call out your name and bring the food to you. The tables are always bussed to keep the flow running smoothly. Off to the side is a small bar that has lemons, ketchup and horseradish. You can use the little cups to mix your own sauce. They also have varied varieties of hot sauce that you can also use to make your own favorite dipping sauce. Saltines are located at each table. Did I mention they also have a few choices of beer in a bottle to compliment your meal? The parking can be tight depending on your arrival time. I've been coming here for years and I have never been dissatisfied, until Monday night. #1 the man overcharged me when I questioned it he got huffy and said it was only $2. Then said, why don't you just take the larger salad, I said no, it won't be eaten. Then he said I will have to refund your card. I said, that will be fine. Then he said that was too much trouble, he would have to give me the $2 cash. I said, that would work. He was pretty rude. #2, my boyfriend's fries were undercooked, so he walked his plate up to the counter and politely let them know. They took his entire dinner and tossed it back in the fryer even though the fish had been eaten off of, then they brought it back out to him. His fish and shrimp were so over cooked he could barely eat them, but the fries were done! I am certain that is not an acceptable health practice. They should have told him to take his food back to the table and they would bring him a fresh order of fries. We did not complain, pretty sure should they would have spit in his food, if we had asked them to make him a new plate. Not sure what was going on with the guy, I assumed to be the manager, but he needs to take a course in food safety. After lots of wine tastings, we were hungry, so I whipped out my trusty Yelp app to find a good nearby restaurant. This place did not disappoint. We got enough fried oysters, catfish, calamari, hush puppies, and fries to feed four people for a great price. The seafood was fresh, fried perfectly, and not salty. This is a homey, divey spot. You stand in line for a long time in order to place your order at a cash register. The wait is long because apparently folks know how good this place is. You seat yourself. A waitress shouts out your name, you raise your hand, and she brings over your plates. Lol! That part kinda tickled me. Like I said, it's homey in here. They also offer beer & wine. This place is a perfect option if you're looking for a "Fish Shack" experience.....lol. It's a very casual vibe with great service and very good food. There's a lunch special every weekday and the prices are very reasonable. So, in both of my excursions to Fish Shack I had the Tuesday lunch special, which is catfish fillets, fries, and hushpuppies. We also tried the gumbo. Everything tastes great. The fish was fried, but not too greasy and the tarter sauce is excellent. The hushpuppies are very good!! It's hard for me to find tasty hushpuppies that aren't greasy, but Fish Shack doesn't disappoint! I was also very please with the seafood gumbo. The food always comes out fast and hot. If you're a condiment person.....you'll be in condiment heaven at Fish Shack. If a little tiny local place that you've driven by for years is named "Best seafood shack outside of New Orleans," you have an obligation to try it out. At least that's what I think. It is tiny and the lines can get long - always a good sign. And there are signs telling you not to grab a table until after you order. That's awesome. I hate those jerks. Speaking of tables, they're simple, no frills. Paper towels, every different condiment that you could want - from standard hot sauce to Tabasco to malt vinegar. Plus saltines. Nice. We ordered a fried basket to share. The fried goods were crisp-tender and not greasy. Yum. The tarter sauce, always an important element for me, was delicious. The fries were ok, but not a style that I prefer. I like thin-crisp fries, these were fat-tender. To each their own. We also ordered a side of hush puppies. Yum-o. I'd order those again. Be aware that street construction in front makes it extremely difficult to get into the parking lot. That should be finished sometime in first quarter 2016. I don't agree that the Fish Shack is the best place outside of New Orleans. It simply isn't the place to go for Cajun cooking. I would say we are regulars here at this local joint. Some nights, the lines would be out the door so parking can be a bit hard to find. We are always craving their cheap shrimp cocktails and frozen margaritas. Although it's cheap, they do not skimp out on the shrimps! A number of choices especially of fried seafood. If you don't like fried food, then this is probably not going to be the right place for you. I got the combo fried basket/plate with shrimp and oyster with fries, coleslaw and a side of hush puppies. They take your name at the register and when it is ready, the waiter will bring it out and call your name. Portion was decent. Food was hot. Shrimp was good. A couple oysters were just a bit bitter for my taste. Fries and coleslaw very acceptable. Best thing I liked was the hushpuppies. Very tasty. Spent almost $20.00 for lunch. It's easy to take consistency for granted. Such is the case for Fish Shack.. I live really close by and been coming regularly for a while. - The food is consistently delicious,,, Service is consistently fast and condiments (Lemon, lime, and seafood sauces) are consistently fresh) When I don't eat here , I'm getting rice to-go for the week. The rice is consistently amazing. Oh the rice - It just hits different. - i would speak about individual dishes , everything is really good. Okay this place confuses me, busy & amazing reviews but the shrimp was so bad? So bland, i asked if they made it spicy or offered sauce and she just said ya. I got boiled shrimp with dry seasoning on the outside of the shell, which gets peeled off. Then there was nothing under except the water that drained from them. In a hurry for lunch but want to eat something delicious?! This is your place! I went during lunchtime which was fairly packed, but the line goes down very quickly. It's almost as quick as fast food, but you as a customer don't feel rushed to hurry and eat. The atmosphere is humble and inviting and the seafood is fresh. Right when we got in line our drink order was given immediately and a few minutes later we ordered. They have a good system of ordering first and then seating yourself after to get people in and out. We ordered the Wednesday catfish special and fish tacos. Love that the fish tacos came with a spicy coleslaw, avocado, and a delicious sauce (tasted like chipotle but don't quote me). I love that Fish Shack has daily lunch specials that won't break the bank. Omg what a wonderful place! I drove by many times but havnt had a chance to stop in. First it's a walk up order. The menu was typical seafood items but reasonably priced. I was shocked that oysters were 12 for a dozen. Not bad considering other places are so high yet it tast fine. I enjoyed the fried fish and shrimp. They were a good size and I definitely left full. I also tried the seafood soup. That was ok, however once again plenty of seafood in the soup. The fish tacos were perfect as well. Just remember you have to put the cabbage in your taco as you eat them. The sauce that came with the fish taco was tasty. I wanted to try the cocktail but we ordered to many items already. I'll definitely have to try that the next time. Front staff very friendly. Everyone seem pretty happy and cheerful. They also set up.the tables well considering the social distancing rule. Very interesting setup but after eating I honestly do not see the fascination with this restaurant. So many people talk about Fish Shack like it's the best thing since sliced bread but for me it was mediocre. My crab cakes, fried oysters, shrimp m, catfish and even fries were bland and boring. The restaurant seemed dirty from the floors, doors and tables but saying that it was really busy. We stood in line for 15 minutes to order food. If it's pretty darn good and fish seems real fresh. We used to come here more but now the prices went up it's easy to spend $60 for two people. I guess that's good for a fish meal these days but not something we spend that often for carry out. We have had the rainbow trout, catfish, scallops, gumbo not that great. Shrimp cocktail good. Fish Shack's blackened tilapia tacos were my introduction to the fish taco a while back and I LOVE THEM here! The slaw served with the tacos is really good too but seems to have gotten a little spicier over time. Not a huge deal- I just prefer a milder taste. My husband was craving seafood, so we decided to check out Fish Shack for lunch one day. It's a restaurant that we always pass by whenever we go to Downtown Plano, so it was nice to finally check this off the list. We ordered a few items: grilled shrimp plate, sea bass plate, gumbo, clam chowder, and a friend shrimp and oyster po'boy sandwich. The sides we got were coleslaw, grilled veggies, and rice. Most items were pretty standard and good, but nothing special. The highlight was probably the gumbo and rice, which we enjoyed. However, we were very put off by the clam chowder. I hate to be too negative on my Yelp reviews, but this was truly the worst clam chowder I've ever had. The taste was so off putting. We literally had one spoon and tossed it. I wish I could say more but when I think of this place, I think of the terrible clam chowder. Maybe it was a bad day? However, I can't see myself returning to this restaurant.
