Food is good. The fish only come in one standard size. I found my haddock, although tasty, was a bit small for the price. Chips were delish - a good balance of crispiness and fluffiness. Went to the smaller food stall they have next door on a food tour (Secret Food Tours of London) as one of the spots on the tour and had to come back.... Didn't realize it but it was too late and the market stall was closed so I ended up grabbing a table inside the restaurant, which didn't disappoint! Got there around 6:30 and the place was still pretty empty but it quickly filled up. I'd say grab a seat early and inside if you can.... it is under the London Bridge after all and traffic will get loud outside. I had the fried haddock with chips and mashed peas, a market punch and sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. The fish was perfect not a lot of seasoning but a slight fresh yeast flavor to the batter. The chips are cooked three times apparently, first time boiled in water and that ensures they're not at all greasy but a nice crisp potato. The market punch was nice and refreshing as a cocktail and went very well with the meal. Lastly the pudding didn't disappoint, the only thing I would add is another scooping of ice cream! Although I got something simple there were a variety of seafood selections around the very packed tables.... If fish and chips are not your thing I'm sure they'll have something for you as well (but not steak ) Very good meal indeed! read more

Decor: The location of this place couldn't be better. Right in the middle of the lovely Burrough Market, this place gets a good amount of traffic. That said, it really is just a nicer/larger food shack- there is a VERY limited amount of seating to the side and most people end up standing and eating or just walking away with the goodies. Service: The people who work here are pretty quick and efficient, so I appreciate that. You may have to wait just a bit while they fry your meal (FRESH!) Food: Ah yes, so of course, I had: - Cod and chips: the cod was really really amazingly flakey! I was pleasantly surprised. It was hot and freshly crispy and the batter was really right on. The chips were also nice and hot and I definitly didn't complain! Load up on your personal choices of ketchup, vinegar and salt :) - Risotto Balls: I LOVE RISOTTO BALLS! This restaurant is good for its fish (as the name alludes to) and is one of only a handful of sit-down restaurants in the Borough Markets. I'm a huge fan of the buzz of the markets and there's such delicious organic food everywhere that it took me a while to eat at Fish! The service was friendly and professional and we enjoyed a nice quiet lunch on a Friday. The fish is absolutely fresh and you have the choice over grilled or steamed fish with a variety of sauces. I ordered the organic salmon which was a little over-cooked but my friend had the wild sea-bass which was absolutely divine. Portion sizes are small for the price (15-20 pound mains) so big-eaters beware, however this was an extremely satisfactory lunch. read more

Fish! is both a restaurant and shop which sells great fresh fish at the front of the building and cooks it at the back. The restaurant itself is a bit posh, in keeping with the Borough setting of foodies and cashmere. However, the service is not a all snobbish and I would really recommend this place for a great laid-back meal. The waitress didn't even think twice about whether it was ok for me to have a slightly bigger starter for my main course and adapted the prices accordingly. Unfortunately, our experience here was slightly marred by the fact that my boyfriend and I were both recovering from bad colds. The heating in the restaurant seemed a bit obscene especially since I had an air vent blowing powerfully behind my feet. To this day I'm not able to tell if I was my own personal body temperature to blame or if other customers felt the same. Nonetheless, the food was great and service very efficient. Almost ruined by a group of foreign tourists with a wailing baby, who let rip for at least 20 minutes before they finally took it out of the restaurant for a dip in the Thames. Couldn't fault the food - wonderful range of fish and everything well presented. They even offer a few meat dishes for those strange people who don't like fish. Between the four of us, we tried: fishcakes, mussels, prawn cocktail, whitebait, followed by tuna, fish and chips (there is a choice of 4 or 5 different fish in batter) and for me a fish pie (with no mussels in it - yay!). All washed down with a lovely Touraine sauvignon. We pretty much cleaned our plates. As other reviewers have pointed out, it's a little over-priced. Also, they add on 12.5% service charge rather than allowing you to leave a suitable amount for the (excellent, but ashen-faced) waitress. Those screams must have passed 100 decibels. read more

With fish stocks decreasing by the second, it's not a plaice I go to often - I just feel too guilty. But the fishmongers claim it's all from sustainable sources. There's cod, haddock, plaice and halibut, a large portion in light beer batter. It's fresh. So are the chunky cut chips. As much as I love how Fish Kitchen is a small independent takeaway, I really do wish secretly that there was one on the end of each high street in London. Why is there no chain of fish and chip restaurant in London? Regardless, the fish and chips here are truly delicious and the staff are extremely friendly, if not flirty. After hours of tasting cheese and olives in the cold, there is nothing i enjoy more than splashing out 7.95 on a plaice and chips (and mushy peas for an extra 1.75) and sitting on the bench of Southwark Cathedral, with a glass of mulled wine. The restaurant is pretty inside. And if the weather is bad and you want to sit down vs. eat at the usual borough vendors, it was an ok choice. Wait, it said balls plural on their sign, yet I only got 1 ball. That was fine, it was really good and I recommend adding the curry sauce to go with it. Very good fresh food with incredibly nice staff. I went with my parents, brother, sister in law, and 11mo old niece who they happily accommodated with just-off-the-printer colouring sheets and crayons. The cockles appetiser was fantastic and, because there were so many of us sharing it, they doubled up on the portion size with no extra charge! It was the first time my father had ever had cockles and he absolutely loved them. My mother got the seafood salad, which she liked but I wasn't a fan of. Three of us got fish and chips (one plaice, haddock, and halibut). I liked the plaice the best but I prefer lighter fish in general. My father is a halibut fan and loved his - I found it too meaty. My brother got a fish pie, which he was a bit nervous about because the fish/cheese combo is a bit odd to us but he loved it. Overall, the food was clearly freshly made - I enjoyed seeing the kitchen right in the middle of the restaurant and watching them prepare some of our food - and high quality. My father is a big fish aficionado, so I took him here knowing he'd be delighted with the menu. You can order anything from the fresh fish selection and choose your sauce, side dishes and potato, fries accompaniment.
