Friends and I ordered specific sashimi items, but when we went to pay, the associate had added a fish we did not order. I caught the mistake before leaving. When we asked for a refund for the incorrect item, the situation became unnecessarily drawn out and took about 20 minutes to resolve. They refunded only the incorrect fish, removed it from the container, and repackaged the remaining salmon into another box. Because this involved raw seafood, we were uncomfortable with the handling after the mistake. Overall, this was a frustrating experience that should have been a simple fix. This is an old school seafood market with beautiful fresh fish, dry goods, and a restaurant (order at the counter, no servers). Take a number from the very old school ticket machine on the seafood counter when you walk in and patiently wait for your number to be called. There is nothing fancy about this place. It's an old building and an old business and it doesn't try to be anything but what it is. That can be refreshing. They have all types of seafood but we were on a mission for fresh poke. I think they offered about six different types, including several spicy ones (labeled "dynamite "). We tried three types of poke, one of which was nice and spicy. I loved two of them and the other one was just sort of flavorless. For you non-seafood lovers, they do offer a few things like a teriyaki chicken bowl which is excellent. You get a ton of freshly-cooked chicken over rice. Plenty of free street parking all around. There's definitely an Asian-bent to the products they sell here and I'm here for it. I have mixed feelings about Fish King. I've ordered a bunch of sashimi, sushi and poke now so I've tried a good mix. For starters, the fish is fresh (well fresher than seafood you get at a supermarket for sure). Prices are expensive. For the sashimi and sushi, I've gotten multiple pieces of fish where bones were still in it (which NEVER happens at a sushi restaurant). The poke was fresh but I felt like everything I got (salmon, hamachi, tuna ) were all under seasoned. You couldn't taste much of the seasoning at all actually. I was hoping it would be similar to poke on Oahu but sadly no. I have yet to find anywhere in LA that tastes remotely close to poke in Hawaii. Also, pet peeve of mine whenever there is a tip section on the paper receipt when I am simply conducting a transaction, i.e. buying fish or other products to take home. I would suggest removing this. I ordered a bowl of New England clam chowder and two grilled fish tacos for her and a halibut sandwich for me. I got there 30 minutes before closing time (7:00 PM). The place was busy. It's a combination of a fish market and restaurant. There were a lot of patrons enjoying their food at tables on both sides of the store/restaurant. Twenty minutes, my order was ready. I drove 5 minutes to her work. We decided to eat in the car to avoid the traffic going home. The clam chowder was rich and creamy. Her grilled fish tacos were OK. My halibut sandwich was excellent. The halibut was cooked to perfection. It was placed in a soft French roll. I asked for no tomatoes and tartar sauce. It came with a spear pickle. I enjoyed my sandwich a lot. Tried Fish King for the first time and I'm not sure what all the hype is about. No hate, but this place has as great reviews as other Seafood shops so I was expecting high-quality sushi options. The majority of their menu is grilled seafood, which isn't really my cup of tea. My friend said the salmon burrito is the best thing here, but the salmon burrito is made of grilled salmon - not raw salmon. I ended up opting for the poke bowl which is just under $17. The salmon poke bowl is actually delicious - lots of buttery fresh salmon in a delightful shoyu sauce. It comes with a scoop of imitation crab and seaweed salad. You can also get ginger on the side for free. For the price, the quality was good but the portion was just alright. If I ever come back, I would get their poke again. They have restrooms inside. There's also some tables, but it's pretty limited considering how crowded it gets on the weekends. Parking is street parking only, but street parking is free. Workers here are pretty friendly. One bite and it took me back to my trips spent eating freshly made poke in Hawaii with my mom. You know the food is good when the first bite takes you back to a joyful memory. I'm a longtime loyal customer, and that was the only time I ever complained. Yet he acts as if I do this on purpose. I honestly wonder why they have him as a manager. I believe a manager should handle things smoothly and ensure customers are happy. All these years, we never complained. We never felt bad or mistreated. I don't know what changed, whether it's a new owner or new rules, but it is truly disappointing. I sincerely hope the policies are reconsidered to ensure loyal customers are treated respectfully. We never felt this way before. This is disheartening, that after spending over $100, I am told to pay cents. The issue is not the money. If I can spend $200 or more, it is negligible. However, it is the principle. The service has deteriorated so much that it feels as if customer care is no longer a priority. I hope that whoever instituted these rules takes this feedback seriously. Since it was my first time, I asked the guy working there (Saul) on how people usually order. He was very helpful, told me I can get half, or even quarter pound portion! We love getting fresh fish/lobster here. They have decent amount of free parking spaces. It's ADA friendly. The bathroom is always clean. The hot food is not awesome. Most fish entrees are farm raised fish and the oil they use to fry is questionable also. I asked what kind of oil they use for the fried zucchini and no one could give me an answer. But the non hot food such as the Mexican seafood cocktail and the shrimp rolls with peanut sauce are chef's kiss. Oh you can ask to sample all the different poke variety too. Their selection was more than I expected and they do shuck the oysters for you if you want to eat them there for a charge of seventy-five cents per oyster, it can add up but when my craving hits I'm willing to pay. The fish themselves were not really seasoned though. You might need to add your own pepper, salt or whatever you like on your fish to get some more flavor. I specifically went there and paid a premium for what was labeled as sushi-grade salmon, expecting a high level of quality and care, especially since I was planning to prepare sushi at home. Selling fish as sushi-grade comes with a responsibility, and this just didn't meet that standard at all. Good mainstay for local fish market situated next to GCC. My family and I have been going to Fish King since over twenty years ago. It may look more expensive for fish but honestly with the inflation and Whole Foods just further down the road, I think you get really good quality fish for a reasonable price. I've eaten most of the popular menu options but my favorite is the sushi sets that were introduced during Covid. I usually get the Aki special set because it has more sushi but there is a lighter version called Matsu. You won't see it technically on the menu anymore but if you ask, you can still order these sushi sets. Just make sure to order around 3pm or so in case the sushi runs out. There is sushi offered behind the main counter but those are premade for poke bowls and the totoritos. Plus, there's tons of parking around Fish King. The fries were thin, crispy, and surprisingly not salty, which I really appreciated. Even the most basic California roll shocked me -- it was so meaty, fresh, and satisfying.
