I used to really love the salmon poke here but not anymore. I don't think I'll be getting the bowl since the rice is always hard. I got the salmon bowl twice now, both times the rice was like day old rice, and the seaweed and crab salad were also not the freshest. The poke itself was great. I'd probably recommend just getting the poke on its own and make your own rice. Service is standard, take a ticket and order. I like looking at all their groceries and made sushi. We went to Fish King this afternoon for two reasons. Of course, the fresh fish grilled perfectly from the galley is the main reason as we have been dining here for years. The other reason was to wish Joe a fond farewell on his final day of work. He is the very nice and cordial fellow who tends to the dining areas and kept them presentable for diners. He always made sure to greet us when we were seated and he often looked out for our needs while there. To us, he was the familiar and welcoming face of Fish King. I'm sure many other regular patrons feel the same way. He will be missed. We will still continue to dine at Fish King but it definitely will not be the same without Joe. This place is home of the curmudgeon. Although I've only been once, I can make that claim because even they know. The many signs they have posted plead in desperation for customers not to complain if food takes long. They say it just will. Also, as soon as I walked in I felt like I needed popcorn as I watched the angry older female employee complain and yell at a customer who was also complaining and arguing. All this over some fish?! I felt like I walked into a pretty hostile environment and I wondered why everyone was so angry. I've rarely seen employees treat customers that bad, so I was shocked. For many years, my family and I have consistently visited Fish King, enjoying sushi, poke, and more. We have been satisfied for years, continuing despite rising costs because it's been a favorite. We've never complained and always valued the remarkable food. Yet now, it is deeply upsetting. I spend over $100 for a meal, and the manager argues over a side of spicy mayo and ginger. When I ask, he tells us, "Sorry, but everything is expensive right now, but here you go, this time you can have an exception!" I remember previously, there was only one time when something wasn't right, and I asked them to fix it. The same manager gave me faces, as if I do this every time. I'm a longtime loyal customer, and that was the only time I ever complained. Yet he acts as if I do this on purpose. I honestly wonder why they have him as a manager. I believe a manager should handle things smoothly and ensure customers are happy. All these years, we never complained. We never felt bad or mistreated. I don't know what changed, whether it's a new owner or new rules, but it is truly disappointing. I sincerely hope the policies are reconsidered to ensure loyal customers are treated respectfully. We never felt this way before. This is disheartening, that after spending over $100, I am told to pay cents. The issue is not the money. If I can spend $200 or more, it is negligible. However, it is the principle. The service has deteriorated so much that it feels as if customer care is no longer a priority. I hope that whoever instituted these rules takes this feedback seriously. I did not mean to write this to complain or put anyone in trouble. This review comes only out of frustration, because a place like Fish King that's been out there for so many years, and customers who are expecting things to remain respectfully the same, it is very disappointing to feel disrespected and not valued. This is probably the better options for buying poke by the pound. The poke bowl can be 2 flavors of your choice for $16. I enjoyed the spicy salmon, hamachi, and scallop! Also, pet peeve of mine whenever there is a tip section on the paper receipt when I am simply conducting a transaction, i.e. buying fish or other products to take home. I would suggest removing this. When we asked for a refund for the incorrect item, the situation became unnecessarily drawn out and took about 20 minutes to resolve. For the sashimi and sushi, I've gotten multiple pieces of fish where bones were still in it (which NEVER happens at a sushi restaurant). The poke was fresh but I felt like everything I got (salmon, hamachi, tuna ) were all under seasoned. You couldn't taste much of the seasoning at all actually. I was hoping it would be similar to poke on Oahu but sadly no. I have yet to find anywhere in LA that tastes remotely close to poke in Hawaii. It's an old building and an old business and it doesn't try to be anything but what it is. That can be refreshing. They have all types of seafood but we were on a mission for fresh poke. I think they offered about six different types, including several spicy ones (labeled "dynamite "). We tried three types of poke, one of which was nice and spicy. I loved two of them and the other one was just sort of flavorless. For you non-seafood lovers, they do offer a few things like a teriyaki chicken bowl which is excellent. You get a ton of freshly-cooked chicken over rice. Plenty of free street parking all around. There's definitely an Asian-bent to the products they sell here and I'm here for it.
