I specifically went there and paid a premium for what was labeled as sushi-grade salmon, expecting a high level of quality and care, especially since I was planning to prepare sushi at home. When you're eating fish raw, trust in the product is everything. Unfortunately, that trust was completely broken. While I was carefully slicing the salmon for sushi, I ended up finding four bones in the fish. Not one, not two--four. That's honestly unacceptable for something being sold as sushi-grade. At that level, the fish should be thoroughly inspected and properly deboned before it ever reaches the customer. This wasn't just a minor inconvenience either--it completely disrupted the experience. I had to stop multiple times while preparing the fish to check for more bones, which defeats the entire purpose of buying high-quality, ready-to-use fish. It also made me question whether it was even safe to serve, especially to others. For the price and reputation Fish King seems to have, I expected way better attention to detail and quality control. Selling fish as sushi-grade comes with a responsibility, and this just didn't meet that standard at all. When we asked for a refund for the incorrect item, the situation became unnecessarily drawn out and took about 20 minutes to resolve. They refunded only the incorrect fish, removed it from the container, and repackaged the remaining salmon into another box. I have mixed feelings about Fish King. I've ordered a bunch of sashimi, sushi and poke now so I've tried a good mix. For starters, the fish is fresh (well fresher than seafood you get at a supermarket for sure). Prices are expensive. For the sashimi and sushi, I've gotten multiple pieces of fish where bones were still in it (which NEVER happens at a sushi restaurant). The poke was fresh but I felt like everything I got (salmon, hamachi, tuna ) were all under seasoned. You couldn't taste much of the seasoning at all actually. I was hoping it would be similar to poke on Oahu but sadly no. I have yet to find anywhere in LA that tastes remotely close to poke in Hawaii. It's an old building and an old business and it doesn't try to be anything but what it is. That can be refreshing. They have all types of seafood but we were on a mission for fresh poke. I think they offered about six different types, including several spicy ones (labeled "dynamite "). We tried three types of poke, one of which was nice and spicy. I loved two of them and the other one was just sort of flavorless. For you non-seafood lovers, they do offer a few things like a teriyaki chicken bowl which is excellent. You get a ton of freshly-cooked chicken over rice. Plenty of free street parking all around. There's definitely an Asian-bent to the products they sell here and I'm here for it. My friend said the salmon burrito is the best thing here, but the salmon burrito is made of grilled salmon - not raw salmon. I ended up opting for the poke bowl which is just under $17. The salmon poke bowl is actually delicious - lots of buttery fresh salmon in a delightful shoyu sauce. It comes with a scoop of imitation crab and seaweed salad. You can also get ginger on the side for free. For the price, the quality was good but the portion was just alright. If I ever come back, I would get their poke again. They have restrooms inside. There's also some tables, but it's pretty limited considering how crowded it gets on the weekends. Parking is street parking only, but street parking is free. Workers here are pretty friendly. It's a combination of a fish market and restaurant. There were a lot of patrons enjoying their food at tables on both sides of the store/restaurant. Twenty minutes, my order was ready. I drove 5 minutes to her work. We decided to eat in the car to avoid the traffic going home. The clam chowder was rich and creamy. Her grilled fish tacos were OK. My halibut sandwich was excellent. The halibut was cooked to perfection. It was placed in a soft French roll. I asked for no tomatoes and tartar sauce. It came with a spear pickle. I enjoyed my sandwich a lot. Their selection was more than I expected and they do shuck the oysters for you if you want to eat them there for a charge of seventy-five cents per oyster, it can add up but when my craving hits I'm willing to pay. Service is fast and top notch, as I ordered other food they brought my shucked oysters tableside to me with lemons! I also ordered a lobster bisque that was amazing and came with little crackers.
