I don't mean to sound dramatic, but the food here is poetry. I came with my husband for our anniversary dinner, and each bite we took was punctuated by words of praise and appreciative nods. I heard this place was good, but I didn't know it was THAT good. We started with their raw shrimp appetizer which was incredible. The sharpness and spiciness of this dish will sober you up. It was incredibly fresh and nuanced. We also got complimentary shrimp crackers, which came with what I believe is a shrimp and tamarind paste. That dip is a REVELATION. I had never before thought to use tamarind and shrimp paste together in a dip! For the mains, we ordered the crab noodles, fried fish, and crab curry. All were incredible. The crab noodle had such a savory, sweet, umami flavor - I could really taste the celery and cilantro. The crab curry was so rich and spicy. The fried fish didn't taste fishy at all, sitting on a bed of tangy, sweet vinegar topped with herbs, cashews, and diced pineapple. I took my cousin around Manhattan since she had not been back since 2008 and my first thought was to bring her to Fish Cheeks because I had such a great experience the first time. We made a reservation for 8 but arrived an hour early. Luckily, even on a packed Tuesday night, we were able to get seated right away. We ordered the Chefs Selection for Two, Selection 1, and it was more than enough. I was completely full but did not want to waste any food and brought some back to our hotel. Heard a lot of hype surrounding this place, so was excited when I managed to snag a dinner reservation for the weekend! Here's what we ordered: - Zabb wings- Probably one of my favorite dishes, and one of their most known ones as well. - Crispy rice salad and pork- Not quite what I was expecting compared to other crispy rice salads I've had. The crispy rice and pork tasted a bit soggy, so would pass on this. - Crab aob woonsen- These glass noodles were pretty tasty with a decent chunk of crab meat but portion overall was a bit small. It's certainly a solid Thai spot, but wouldn't confidently say that it's my favorite. I think if you're able to easily get a reservation, it's definitely worth a shot but probably wouldn't wait too long for a table if doing a walk-in. After trying their sister restaurant in Bangkok Supper Club, it was inevitable that I had to try the food options here. Visiting the NoHo location, I initially booked as a party of two, but had to adjust my RSVP to three on short notice. Their email communication was prompt, and I felt a great first impression knowing the speediness of responding to resy changes for guests. Inside the venue itself, we lucked out by having a table by the windows so there was a bit more space. There's indoor and outdoor seating, but do know some of the tables inside can be fairly close (classic NYC dining!). The menu offers a diverse range of options, including a Chef's Selection list for two that's for $140. The dishes are served family style, and each were incredibly delicious. We had a party of three, and decided to split three dishes together. Our choices ironically ended up balancing out the flavors very well, as the saltiness of the pork cheeks just complemented the acidity in the branzino and spice of the curry. My favorite was the pork, but each dish wow'd me away. If I had to nitpick, it's that there's only one dessert item--but it was very delicious and a great finish to our meal. Service was also incredibly prompt, welcoming, and I could tell their effort shine as ours was training a new waitress at the time. We actually received our food relatively quickly, but had a great experience dining for a while. Whether this or their Brooklyn equivalent, Fish Cheeks is definitely worth the visit! read more

Me and my friends decided to come here on a whim the other night. There was about a 45 minute wait for a table, but we were able to get notified via text when a table opened up. The space itself is very pretty with lots of dim lighting and wood accents. They are undergoing some renovations, so part of the restaurant was not usable, but when it opens back up, I'm sure it will be able to accommodate more people. The menu is quite seafood and fish forward, and our server did a great job of walking us through the menu. We ordered the somtum corn salad, the green curry, the steamed fish with Thai herbs, and the crab aob woonsen. Everything was delicious and had great flavor profiles, but the standouts were definitely the steamed fish and the green curry. Fish Cheeks has been on my radar for quite some time. It only took me some time to come here, man up, and eat something from here. This is not your run-of-the-mill Thai restaurant that serves up Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, and Drunken Noodle. This is upscale Thai cuisine, which I expect nothing less given it is located in the bougie neighborhood of NoHo, with a new location in Williamsburg, a similar neighborhood. What I liked, other than the food and its terrific location to the subway, is the genuineness of the servers. Cute, hardworking, intelligent, with quick turnaround times, that is all wonderful to expect from such a restaurant with high end food. Everything left me flabbergasted because I was not expecting the results I received. Yes, the portions are to be shared, and as a solo diner I certainly felt out of place (the servers asked me to bring someone here if I should return), but I have a saying for that. If you wait for people, you go nowhere. That applies to anything in life, but it really applies when you really want to do something but have no one else to enjoy it with. When my friend heard that I was a considerable fan of the Korean raw marinated crab, she said, "You've got to try this Thai place with their raw marinated crab!" Then I did, and it did not disappoint! Let me preface by saying that the flavor dimension is thoroughly different from the Korean one. This one has a heavy fish sauce-lime foundation and it is absolutely delicious. The best way for me to describe the depth of this flavor is it is very similar to the viral Thai 'crack' sauce. It is addicting. The crab meat was very tender, and it felt like it was quite literally melting in my mouth. The atmosphere of this restaurant was intimate and chill. The furniture was eccentric and colorful, it contrasted well with the semi-dark lit room. This place would be a perfect for a casual date night spot for sure. The staff was friendly and was able to get to us quick despite it being packed. We had a reservation so if you are planning to come on a weekend, go ahead and make a reservation to secure your spot. I was excited to finally try Fish Cheeks since I was hearing so much about them! We made a reservation for a weeknight and were seated upon arrival. We ordered the steamed branzino, crab aob woonsen, choo chee scallop, and crispy rice salad and pork. Once you are inside, you smell the fish sauce aroma which is mouthwatering! I loved this place. I went during restaurant week. I ordered the zaab wings and they were good, they were well seasoned and well cooked. I can understand why people liked they, they were alright. I would try other appetizers. I ordered a mocktail which was good refreshing. As an entree it was cold so I got the Tum Yum soup. That soup was delicious, I loved that soup. First that soup had a little bit of everything, shrimp pork and noodles. The flavor of the soup was delicious a little spicy and had depth and some lime flavor. The items in the soup were well cooked which is always a concern when there are multiple proteins. The noodles were perfectly cooked. That soup was so good and I still think about it. Dessert was very good, I had the pandan sticky rice. The service was ok; it was really busy and I sat down at the bar. The bartender forgot to give me the dessert so I had to remind him. I did not try the free chips, they were not given to me. The place is nice and it is lively. It was busy on a cold Tuesday so this place is very popular. The market oysters with fried shallot and nam jim sauce were the perfect way to start the meal. Fish Cheeks has a seafood-forward menu with some stellar vegan options as well. Between two people, we shared the crab curry, tofu pad prik & corn salad. Both the crab and tofu curry dishes were spicy and incredibly flavorful, I have a decent spice tolerance and enjoyed but could see the spice level as potentially being overwhelming to more sensitive palettes. The menu explicitly notes that there are no changes/substitutions allowed, so I don't think the spice level can be adjusted. The corn salad was a refreshing contrast to the spice of the other dishes, but also was a very, very simple corn & tomato salad with a vinaigrette -- not necessarily a must have. I recently went back to this Thai restaurant for their excellent collaboration with the popular Philadelphia Thai place, Kalaya, which they apparently did before in Philly. A handful of us came here for this $135 (+ tax/tip) meal, which was packed with people, and for very good reason. The price might seem a bit high, but we were served 12 dishes overall, so it was very much worth it. The atmosphere was pleasant, there was plenty of food, and we had a very good time. To drink, they had a couple of collaboration cocktails, and I ordered the Tom Kha Manhattan for $19, with coconut milk-washed Highland and Islay scotch, lemongrass, makrut lime leaf, galangal, sweet vermouth, and cacao. This was a tasty drink, with Thai spices to start, and a mild burn at the end from the scotch, though I would not have minded more peat with the Islay listed. I hope they add it to their regular cocktail list, as I think it would be a hit. For the food below, the appetizers were primarily from Fish Cheeks, while the entrees were from Kalaya, though some dishes had a small collab. My favorite of the appetizers was the Marinated Raw Crab, consisting of blue crab cured in fish sauce and seasoned with fresh lime juice, Thai bird's eye chili, shallots, and fragrant cilantro. Of course, since this was raw crab, it reminded me of a more flavorful version of the standard gejang at Rice Thief. There was plenty of succulent meat and roe, and the dish had a pleasant sourness outside of the spiciness. I also liked the Re Rai with Gaeng Pu, with vermicelli noodles topped with Southern-style crab curry, betel leaf, and makrut lime leaf. These were small bites of the slightly sweet noodles, topped with their excellent moderately spicy curry. I have previously had their Gaeng Pu, and it was again good here, working quite well as a topping. The Zabb Wings, consisting of free-range chicken wings fried with chili, lime, and makrut lime leaf, and served with Kalaya sweet chili sauce, was a bit of a collab but mainly was a dish from this spot, as the sweet chili sauce was honestly not needed with the wings being plenty flavorful on their own. I loved the dry spice blend on the chicken wings, with a touch of sourness and heat (I'm presuming there's also some MSG in there, but I am unsure.) I also liked the Mussel Gorlae, consisting of grilled mussels in gorlae sauce with house-made crispy shallots. The mussels were tender and on skewers. The flavor was a mix of sweet and mild sourness, with a bit of flavor from the grill. The last of the appetizers was the Squid Ink Calamari with stir-fried fresh calamari, squid ink, lemongrass, and fish sauce. I didn't have this dish for obvious reasons, but the rest of the people weren't fans, with the squid being a bit overcooked, and they found the sauce oddly sweet. As the entrees were primarily from Kalaya, I won't go into as many details. There was the Pla Tod Kamin, Lon Tai Pla, Moo Waan, Nor Mai Tom Kati, Gaeng Pae, and Kalum Tod Nam Pla as a vegetable side dish, as well as a small side of ajat, or pickled cucumber. Descriptions of these dishes can be found in the photos, but my preferences were the Nor Mai Tom Kati, which reminded me of rendang, and the Lon Tai Pla, a complex coconut curry that paired nicely with the ground pork. The rest of them were good as well, with the cabbage side being a surprising hit. Our least favorite was the pla tod kamin. The fish was well-fried but lacked a bit of flavor, with the dipping sauce being way too salty for my liking. The dessert, I believe, was a collab as well: Khao Niew Durian, or durian with sweet coconut sticky rice, salted coconut cream, and coconut gelato. I love just about anything made with durian, and this was excellent. The bit of salt helped balance the dessert's overall sweetness, and everything paired nicely with the funky fruit. The sticky rice was also cooked well, and while I've had much stronger coconut gelato, it was still tasty. The four of us thoroughly enjoyed this collab, and I hope it happens again next year. My husband and I were visiting from LA. I've had this place bookmarked for a while if we ever made it to NYC. This is easily one of the of the best Thai food restaurant that I have had. I think this place might have the best crab fried rice in all of New York City (sorry Thai diner). I brought my brother along to try out the crab fried rice and we also ordered the crab aob woonsen which is basically crab meat with vermicelli noodles in a savory sauce. I preferred the rice over the noodles a lot more. The noodles were good but nothing too memorable. Only thing is that it took me 10 minutes to wave down my server to take my order because they were busy chatting and it wasn't even the lunch rush yet...might need to hire more staff for lunch hours. Their bathroom is worth checking out too. The sink faucet was very unique looking. Might be one of the more interesting bathrooms in a restaurant. read more

We were running a bit late for our reservation (classic), but they were super gracious and still sat us. Even better, they let us switch tables after already ordering when one opened up with better back support for my date - major points for flexibility and kindness. The meal kicked off with colorful puff chips and a sweet dipping sauce - a fun little starter that set the tone for the bold, playful flavors ahead. I ordered a Thai iced coffee which was delicious - sweet and refreshing in all the right ways. I couldn't resist ordering just one oyster (yes, I know, it's a Thai restaurant, but I love oysters!). My date thought it was ridiculous, but it was fresh and totally worth it. The menu from Executive Chef Dustin Everett is adventurous and bursting with flavor. I was tempted by the coconut crab curry, but chickened out when I saw it came with three pepper icons. a clear sign of pain ahead. (Next time I'll bring a fire extinguisher and go for it.) We shared the squid ink calamari to start; solid, though not my favorite dish of the night. The crab fried rice, on the other hand, was phenomenal. They were able to make it dairy-free for my date without sacrificing flavor. It came with two sauces we ended up loving so much, we asked for more. Pro tip: don't skip the sauces. We finished with a fish dish (don't remember the name, blame the food coma) that arrived in a super cute presentation and was packed with flavor. I was way too full to fully enjoy it, but I still snuck in a few bites - delicious. From the warm service to the beautiful plating to the vibrant, punchy flavors, this place hits every note. Managed to walk into Fish Cheeks with a friend late Tuesday evening. I had heard a it about this restaurant but honestly was not super impressed. The staff was friendly, but our food came at wildly different times and it was unusually challenging to get water. We got the pork belly and steamed fish, which tasted good with the initial bites but became overwhelming quickly thereafter. The food was also somewhat pricey for what you get, but I did appreciate having such an expansive menu and the authentic thai flavors. The ambiance is definitely very comfortable, and they had a lot of options as far as bar seating, outdoor seating, and indoor tables. Unfortunately, this one just didn't hit home for me. read more

Everything we got here was so flavorful and appropriately spicy!!! Sort of surprising that there are no noodle dishes but they really lean into their seafood dishes. There was an incredible prix fixe menu for 2 of $140 total which was SO MUCH FOOD but we decided to pick just a couple options. Also everything came out SO FAST. The only unfortunate thing was that we were seated by the right door so it got really cold any time it opened. it looked cozy otherwise, just not where we were seated - oysters: Loooved the shallots and green chili as toppings - rice salad: the lime flavoring in the rice was so fragrant, I wish there was a side sauce to dip in tho?? - mussels: I've never had a skewer mussels before but the fact that this was grilled gave it a smokey flavor & the sauce to pair was perfect - coconut crab curry: so fragrant and unique, almost feels like there's a peanut undertone. so generous with the crab portions too - bo lan dessert: vietnamese che in bowl form but really it was pandan ice cream over sticky rice. so unique and worth trying read more

Most people who've never dined here have at least HEARD of Fish Cheeks. Whether it's due to the copious amounts of reviews or its featuring in food articles, it's kind of hard to not at least know of the name. I was one of those people until I finally got to try them recently, and wow, were they worth the hype. I came with my sister for a celebratory dinner and we ordered a few of the mainstays to try including the pork cheeks, coconut crab curry, choo chee scallop, and the crab fried rice to split, family style. Everything came out relatively quickly and was hot and fresh. The pork cheeks was perfect, chewy but tender and fatty, exactly what you expect from pork cheeks (tastes similar to neck as well), and the sauce that came with it was great for people who want to cut a bit of that fat with some vinegary tang. The coconut crab curry was superb, spicy, and nutty, with some nice chunks of crab placed on top. I can see why this is basically THE signature dish they have, it's basically the best version of it I've had. The choo chee scallop was tasty as well, though a bit salty for our tastes. I think the basil along with the curry paste was overpowered, maybe exactly because there wasn't a curry really that helped dilute some of that intensity like with the coconut crab curry. Lastly, we ordered a plate of their crab fried rice. Honestly, it feels like whenever we go out to get curry, no matter the variety, whether that's Indian,Thai, Japanese, etc. there's almost never enough rice to go with the curry so we always end up ordering more anyways. In that case, we figured we might as well get the crab fried rice that people get if we were going to order more rice anyways lol. And it's a good crab fried rice! Perfect texture and with an almost perfect ratio of salt and egg to the rice. The crab has a light, subtle flavor to it but it's present. It's very good padding and accompanies the rest of the meal very nicely. Overall, those 4 dishes were enough for my sister and I and they were all quite tasty, with special shoutouts to the coconut crab curry and the pork cheeks, those are MUST-GETS in my opinion. Overall, we had a very good experience here! Our server wasn't really around much, but I don't mind that, since they left a big pitcher of water for us to pour ourselves, which I like because I go through A LOT of water, especially with the restaurant's open-air setup in the summer heat. Very quick service. We got drinks, 2 appetizers, 2 dishes, and a dessert and were in and out in about 30 mins. The oysters were the biggest disappointment in our meal. They're very bland on their own (not brine-y or sweet, just tasteless) and serve as a vehicle for sauce. The pork cheek was fatty and well cooked. Very straightforward but tasty and super filling. The crab noodles were great. Large chunks of crab and a meaty taste. The crab rice was a bit on the bland side but great with the sauces and probably amazing paired with a curry vs. a noodle dish like we got. The mango sticky rice honestly erased any of the above stated criticism. It was not too sweet, the mango was perfectly ripe, and it was just a 10/10. read more
