Very pleased after our first visit to First and Main. Attended on the evening of my wife's birthday along with two other couples who are neighbors and great friends. I personally was in no rush to try the new restaurant, since Turlock tends to bombard new eating places for months after a grand opening. Also, I had in my head that the place was going to be a "foo-foo" fancy, overpriced, Asian fusion dining experience. I could not have been more wrong, except for the Asian influence part (all place setting have chopsticks). The decor is minimalist with no table clothes. The room is big and open, partially divided into two areas lengthwise; a dining room section and a bar/lounge section. The ambiance is lively, bordering on loud, at least at our table. Much more casual that I expected, which is great, because that's Turlock. The menu is extensive. It has something for everyone (even a "greasy" cheese burger). They serve family style, so there's a section of smaller fishes/appetizers/tapas, that has a wide range of starter options. Then there is a section with larger, more main course type items. And there is a Hot Bowl section of varying items. Salads too. Again a lot of choices from which to choose. After a round of exceptional cocktails for those at the table not participating in Dry January, we ordered four starters and five entrees to share between the six of us. They started rolling out of the kitchen and placed on the lazy susan in the middle of our table. We enjoyed sharing and passing things around like at home, and there was a lot of food. We got the imperial rolls, grilled Brussel Sprouts w/apple slivers, red potato's (a ton in the bowl), and roasted cauliflower with balsamic sauce were the starters. Another round of drinks, and then came the main dishes. We got skirt steak with truffle fries, seared ahi, chicken dumplings, pork dumplings, and and Bombay chicken clay pot. All tasted great, and more than enough for the six of us. Way better than any visit to PF Chang's. Way better! Very tasty! Inventive. Fresh. Vibrant. Exhilarating. Current. Modern. Flavor Forward. Original. And Local! The servers were great, but the time that passed between ordering and receiving drinks from the bar needs to improve. I wasn't drinking, and maybe that's why I noticed. Cold water carafes were refilled many times on our table. We ordered the milk and cookies for dessert and a slice of lemonade cake that came out with a lit candle for the birthday girl. The price: surprisingly affordable! Again maybe because I wasn't drinking. After all 9 food plates, 6 cocktails 3 beers, two desserts, and a generous tip, we got out of there for about $50 per person! Very reasonable! We will definitely be back many times! read more

Really need two reviews,one for food, quality, and one for overall experience. The food was excellent, great flavor it just seemed like it took forever to get both our appetizer and then the main course then it came wrong. We had to laugh because we were given an hour and a half time limit to eat, took that long before the appetizer arrived. Really need to improve training with your servers . read more

Service was not what I expected. I went with my husband and his mom to eat. One you have to have to have a reservation and if you don't have one they want to seat you on a high table, at the bar or outside at the patio. If it was my husband and I ok not a problem. But going with elderly person they won't even do anything to accommodate you and they have a sign of a handicap on the door. I was disappointed that they didn't even try to work something out for us. I had such high expectations for this restaurant It was a bit too loud for me, service was real good, nice inside but like I said too loud. The menu was interesting, I had the Korean bowl, it wasn't very good. First thing was it was so hot I had to wait 15 min before I could touch it and it still burned. The flavor was so so, textures didn't go together, I felt this dish needed some work, not enough meat. My wife had the skirt steak and fries. It was ok and basic fries. Had cookie and milk desert, again it was ok, too much chocolate for my liking but had a nice presentation. I will go back, I may have just miss ordered. I hope the next visit is better, I want to support TURLOCK business. read more

Second time here and I won't eat here again. Don't waste your time because they will. The food is great but the service is terrible. It took us about 45 minutes to get our first drinks. I had to walk to the bar and tell the waiter to cancel our order and I would order at the bar. He said ok, but they are ready (drinks sitting at bar). When appitizers came at different times, our waiter never came by so I had to get our small plates and utensil off another table across the room (while the waiter watched). Then our entrees came out at different times. What a #@$@show. Don't blame it on COVID! If you don't have the service, don't jam pack the place. Thats why we had reservations. read more

I'm sitting in the restaurant right now. I couldn't wait to express my feelings about my dinner experience tonight. I want to go and hug the chef for the amazingness they have created. Every single item, there were many, we got blew my mind and taste buds. I might have even teared up when I tasted the Brussels sprouts for the first time. I don't think I have ever eaten food this good before. I can't wait to come back and try the other menu items. I had dinner there Tuesday night at 6 pm. We had reservations and we were seated promptly. We had a party of three so we decided to try several dishes family style. We ordered dumplings, pan seared Ahi, seared skirt steak with truffled fries, Bombay chicken clay pot and shaking beef. The dumplings were meh average. The rest of the dishes were perfect. I am very picky about my food and my high expectations were met. The cooking, seasoning, presentation and service was excellent. The wait staff was dressed sharply, friendly and stopped by at least 8 times. I hate under seasoned dishes and it was not. Temperature and cooking was perfect. All the dishes had good flavor and tasted unique. Only minor complaint is that some of the dish portions were small. I am excited for my next visit to try more items on the menu. Amazing brunch experience! If you haven't tried First and Main, YOU MUST TRY! We were greeted with amazing hospitality and the menu is full of unique options (you won't find a similar experience in Turlock). As we sat and looked around, staff was so diligent in making sure that guests had enough shading and keep tables very clean during COVID-19. The beignets were the best I have ever had! They were soft and warm, as if taken right out of the oven. I also had a the Vietnamese coffee, but you can also choose from an array of other diverse drinks (Hong Kong Tea, Thai Tea, etc.). I had a difficult time choosing and also tempted to try their famous mimosa flight special, which I observed almost each table to have! Overall, I give this place a 5 plus star experience and appreciate the fact that they are constantly offering new items/specials on the menu. I tend to follow them Instagram to check out what new dishes and drinks they offer each week. I love to try new things, so it's something to always look forward to in Turlock! read more

So then I asked whats the difference between coming in and placing an order vs over the phone. She said he would still have to wait at the bar to place an order and do it that way because of compacity. That sounds ridiculous and also horrible customer service. This restaurant is hands down one of the best in Turlock! The cocktails are mixed with the freshness of a big city and the flavors of the foods are truly a masterful delight! I had the Korean short ribs, very fatty not edible. Onion rings were undercooked. My husband had skirt steak with truffle fries, very good but small portion for $35. This place is sooo nice inside, great lighting, not noisy, and comfortable seats. My friend and I went and had a great dinner. He got the ramen and I got a lettuce wrapped burger... the ramen was a very hefty portion. The burger was double and for the price of $15 you can't beat it at a nice restaurant. My husband and I have been going to this place since it opened. We LOVED the two male bartenders that were there in the beginning. They were extremely nice and knowledgeable regarding their selection of alcohol. They even had us try different cocktails that they thought we would enjoy. Food was fabulous. Then, we came back a month or two later and there seemed to be a whole different vibe in the restaurant. The knowledgeable bartenders that we knew were replaced with young 20 something's that didn't know anything about mixing drinks. My husband asked for a certain whiskey and the bartender took several minutes looking for it on the shelf. He had to come back to my husband and ask him which shelf the bottle was on. I saw the same thing happen to the other bartender, who was looking for another type of alcohol that a customer had ordered. What happened to your knowledgeable staff, First and Main? To top it off, my husband I noticed that all of the male employees were dressed extremely professionally, while all of the women that worked there either had tight clothing on, breasts that were falling out of their tops, or short shorts on. We don't know who has been making these changes, but it's making you restaurant/bar really trashy. First and Main started out as a very classy place with knowledgeable employees. We were strolling around downtown Turlock looking for a nice dinner spot and stumbled across this new establishment. At first we weren't too sure about this place... the front door wasn't very inviting and the hostess was hesitant about if she had room for us, but once we got seated at the community table our server was AMAZING. He made some great recommendations for us and was very attentive. We ordered the ramen, fried chicken, and brussels... the FLAVORS were so good. We were both impressed and full by the end and pleased with our under $40 bill for the both of us. We will definitely be back to enjoy some more options! read more
