A lot of room for growth. If I could give it 2.5 I would. First time here and I thought the atmosphere wasn't bad at all, welcoming and friendly staff, decent amount of seating and a small bar. While the menu was limited, they seemed to have everything you could want in a BBQ menu- pulled pork/chicken, ribs, brisket, sandwiches, flounder and catfish. However, the pulled meat had to be carried by BBQ sauce. The cornbread was pretty dry and coleslaw lacked substantial flavor of any sort. Fries were overly seasoned and again, lacked flavor. The salad wasn't too bad, but fairly overpriced when adding meat. Portion sizes were relative to the pricing. This place has a lot of potential to be very good. I hope they don't continue to lean on the crutch of being the only bbq spot in downtown. read more

I'm going to say that maybe we came on the wrong day, or it's because they're just starting Sunday "football service", but I was not impressed. We came on Sunday and learned that they only have a limited football menu then. Apparently they're trying this out, which was a bummer because things I was hoping to try weren't on there. Overall, the atmosphere and location is cool, but that's about all. We ordered a variety of items from the very limited menu (no kids menu on Sunday either). The boiled peanuts were ok...not really much in flavor (but I do prefer a Cajun peanut). The pulled pork sandwich and chips were tasty, and so were the cauliflower hot wings (probably the best thing we ate). My 3 count ribs seemed like they were leftovers from the day before and then dropped in the fryer. They were crunchy, and certainly not "fall off the bone" like you'd expect. A total disappointment. The wings we got were barely what you could call wings - so tiny and certainly not worth the price (6 for $13). My husband got the burger, which he said was overdone and salty. Overall, we agreed that it seemed like the Sunday food was just what was leftover from Friday/Saturday dinner. I hope to be able to rewrite this review in a few weeks and say this place is awesome, because I really want it to be, but the first impressions weren't great. read more

I'm very mixed on how to review my first visit! The outdoor area out front had some seating and a firepit, and there is also a small outdoor space out back. Inside seating was some picnic tables and a few tables for two or four. Service was friendly but slow. My meal came before my beer! It was a Sunday so they had a limited "brunch" menu only, which had no gluten free options. We ordered the ribs that came with two sides and jalapeno cornbread. The ribs were decent, not fall off the bone but still good. The coleslaw was different, but tasty. I asked for fries and got homefries which were very basic. My partner tried the collards which had great flavor but swimming in broth. They had several beers on tap, but sold out of at least 5. Overall no major complaints but at the same time nothing to write home about. read more

Update from a November 2023 visit: I had initial given Firehawk a 2 star rating, as the service was poor and items were missing from my meal. I visited again, and they have greatly improved their service, although it was much less busy than the first visit. This time, a server took care of us throughout the visit, rather then dropping off a menu and disappearing. The food that we all ordered was the BBQ sampler, which I feel is a much better example of what the kitchen is capable of producing. The restrooms are family friendly, there's changing tables, and they are clean. The parking lot can fill up quickly, so anything that can be done for overflow parking would be appreciated. My only criticism is the beer - the CLT area has so many great breweries, so the bar is set high. I think the beer offerings are "unoffensive", but nothing stood out as truly exceptional. Overall, I think that Firehawk may have been a bit overwhelmed when they first opened, but I'm happy to see them improving. If they keep this up, I wouldn't hesitate to include them in my regular rotation of Mt. Holly restaurants. read more

I'm from the era where you have two options when ordering Ribs, a FULL RACK or a HALF RACK. Of course here in North Carolina they LOVE to nickel and dime customers so this place charges $15.00 for 3 skimpy bones, two slices of boring white bread, and in my case the worst Mac & Cheese I've ever had in my life! The catfish is slimy and overly battered accompanied by what tasted like refried fries (stale tasting) not good! I'm very good at predicting these things and I can guarantee that this place won't make it very long before they close their doors permanently. I mean they're located in a very tiny town where there isn't much and they're overpriced, bad combination. The ONLY thing that was good was their crushed ice and the Guava BBQ sauce which was not used since their BBQ isn't good. But they were neither Spicy nor ever near Malaysia !!! $13 for small paper boat with 6 little wings. I know prices have gone up but $2.16 a wing! Didn't even come with fries, my grand daughter felt sorry for my small meal and gave me her slaw. Okay, take this with a grain of salt. They are still relatively new, a few months old. 0. The staff I interacted with seem to care. They want to know how things are so they can improve. So, the rest of my review I tried to be constructive. 1. Got the pulled pork sandwich, and it had super huge chunks, and small bits, unevenly chopped, so I was constantly picking up meat to stuff into the slightly stale potato bun, in order to get a bite. Choose whether you want to have big, tender juicy pieces or small bits, and try to keep your cut/chop to similar sizing. 2. The pork is lightly smoked, that's fine, but when it's chopped they didn't season it. So it lacked flavor, lacked salt for sure. And it seemed a tad dry - did they let it rest, before they chopped it? I'm sure they did, but mine just seemed a little dry and flavorless. 3. The sandwich had coleslaw, which I completely forgot about until I was nearly done and saw some limp green sticking out. So, it wasn't crunchy, was a bit lacking in flavor, and missed its opportunity to add value to the sandwich. 4. The chips and pickles are homemade and awesome! 5. Some guy was hanging at the bar, obviously part of the inner circle, helping the bartender mix drinks and delivering beers to his old boss and old ops manager. (How did I know? Because the whole place could hear him.) Not sure if he's a partner, owner, whatever but he's hogging two spaces at the bar for customers and trying to impress. To me, he was louder than he needed to be, annoying, and needed attention. 6. The layout is open space, and the sauces are at a sauce station (even though your food is brought to you).I say put bottles on the tables and the bar, or in cups in the food trays. Once I'm sitting down, I'm not wanting to get up and down and up and down, to try sauces. 7. The bar stools are a little low, seriously! 8. There's a great outdoor seating area and you can spark up a fire pit and hang with this small black and grey striped tabby cat. PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND DON'T RUN HIM OVER! Maybe, share some food with him, he's far too skinny... 9. I'm just not sold on it, myself. The dining room and bar layout, it's... I can't put my finger on it. I'm hoping that as the seasons change and the staff find their groove, that my next visit will outshine this one. read more

Service- The place just opened so of course its not running like a top. The intial service was a little slow though everyone we spoke to was working hard, kind, and genuinly cared about providing good service. They were just a little understaffed. Once we put our order in food came out at a pretty good pace and service from that point on was awesome! I had 3 little boys with me and at the end they gave them all a free candy. Stuff like poprocks and fun dip. My kids were impressed! I was impressed with the staff over all even when you get perfect service somewhere you rarely see people who care and every one I spoke with gave me the impression they cared. Food- to start, everything I had was awesome. The food was great. If you are a BBQ fan like me, you hate cabinet smoker BBQ. Its servicable but not the real deal. This place has a bunch of portapit smokers in the back. You can tell BBQ WAS COOKED OVER COALS!! This is super rare these days. The sauces were the perfect types all Carolina regional types and a Guava one to mix it up, all were excellent. Cornbread was WOW good! Collards were unique but very good. If I had one compaint it would be that the meat portions are small. I got ribs and pulled pork and it was a good amount with both orders. Prices were good. We ate on Sunday and the menu was limited but my whole family loved what they ate. Beer- I had the Marzen. It had a kind of sweetness to it. It was a great beer though. They had several options for their in house beers. I dont really care about others at a place like this. Check out the sign where they offer free food as well to those in need. I love that. So Mount Holly, good peeps around here! Overall this is a good spot to eat in MH. And Lord knows we need more spots to eat that arent fast food here! Highly recommended! read more

I was excited to find this new place in town - overall a fine bbq experience. I had the Fish sandwich with the salt and pepper catfish - which was the best thing we got at the table. Good price for what we got - would want to explore the menu more to find the right meal here so I'll be back. The place was packed but we didn't have to wait long - it's set in an old garage and they did an amazing job redoing the building - looks like a fun place to sit outside (when it's not 98 degrees) or even down by the creek. read more

I have come here several times to eat and especially to drink. Even tho they're a brew pub their cocktails are top notch. I like getting boiled peanuts and the Cuebano sandwich and then dipping the sandwich in the boiled peanut liquid. It's like a southern Au Jus. The staff is friendly and helpful. read more

I ordered my food to go and the only thing I have to say about the location is that it was very convenient for pick up orders and the cashier was very nice. Now, let me get to the food! Pulled pork - very good. The bbq sauce was good, would have liked a spicy version, but this was good. No side comes with this. Ribs - another good option. Not fall off the bone, but still tender and good. Brisket - 3 slices, cooked nicely and tastes good, but a little salty. Catfish - it was one big piece that was pretty tasty, the batter kept falling off though. This does not come with a side. Actually, everything above was only served with pickles and slaw. The pickles are good, the slaw has potential, but it's missing something flavorful. We did order baked beans, which were too firm. They would be delicious if it weren't for that. Unfortunately, we didn't get to try the brisket because it ran out at 1:15pm, but that just seems like a testament to good brisket. My first experience at Firehawk was wonderful. Multiple members of the staff spoke to me before I was even seated. Bartender made a few beer recommendations and offered samples. Super friendly.
