Very customer-friendly small restaurant serving excellent food for a very reasonable price. Located on the edge of Biltmore Village, a hodge-podge of faux shops outside the gates of one of the really overrated tourists traps in our country, FIG makes it up to you by serving a fairly eclectic selection of American dishes -- all done with great care. You won't be disappointed. The mussels in saffron were plentiful and cooked to perfection -- which many restaurants can't seem to do. Spent the day walking around Asheville and just happened upon this quaint restaurant. With an emptiness brewing in our stomachs we decided to pop in. Professional culinary expertise in the kitchen and at the door combined with engaged wait staff delivers an "everyday gourmet" experience to savor for years to come. I recognized the ambition of the proprietors with the startling description of carrot soup garnished with parsley oil. The golden silk was a delightful start to a wonderful journey. The entree was as eloquent as the appetizer. Veal demi-glace surrounded a bed of perfectly prepared french lentils topped with succulent onions and tender pork tenderloin. The surprises tucked between the layers leaves more evidence of the training and creativity of the staff. Salmon glazed with flavor-- and not just salt-- illustrates the commitment to flavor first in this ready for New York bistro. I missed having a simple fresh vegetable to compliment the entrees but that was available--a la carte, however. Our waitress was a bit clumsy at the table (every dish and utensil deserves a cradled delivery) but made up for the bumps with knowledge of the preparations and ingredients. We rarely have dessert but the discoveries of the first two courses beckoned for attention through the last course. Suthn' style bread pudding with interactive dollops of sweetness and the pot du creme with the complementary wafer left us wondering how so much talent was not first featured in the New York Times. Great little find in Biltmore Village. After a long drive into town, the wife and I wanted relaxing but not overly pretentious quality meal, and this place hit the spot. I had one of the best Caesar salads ever (chopped w/ applewood smoked bacon), and an awesome and unique med rare Ribeye w/ oyster and shitake mushrooms. Staff was 'johnny on the spot,' but didn't rush us. Great dinner for two with drinks for less than $100. We were in and out in an hour (by choice), but this would be a great spot to have a longer meal with friends. Make reservations, it's a small and intimate place. read more

Asheville is filled with wonderfully helpful, pleasant and knowledgeable wait staff but this person should be kept away from customers - she is nasty, unhelpful and makes it obvious that she'd like to be anywhere but working here. Unresponsive, nasty behavior - treating people with dietary restrictions like they should stay home ruined our evening and although the food was ok we will not return - there are too many other wonderful restaurants in town. read more

Recently dined at Fig, in Asheville, NC and though the service was wonderful and the food quality and portions delightful, what I witnessed repetitively was appalling and must share. My party of 4 sat near the bar; our table closest to the "somewhat open" kitchen. I was situated, with a direct view of 2 chefs. Though I could not see the actual guest's plate being prepared, I certainly could see a chef (dark hair) take food off plates and eat it. Perhaps he was tasting, but come on....actually remove food from various plates, then set the exact plate up for server pick-up and delivery to customer was totally gross. I watched this happen over and over, without the chef washing his hands before moving onto a different plate. I even saw him walk to a large stainless steel refrigerator, remove what appeared to be a plastic bin of kale or parsley and pull out a heaping handful and stick in his mouth and then reassume plate assembly. Totally wrong and I can only imagine if the Health Department witnessed the same, some heavy fines would result. I shared this with the rest of my table and in turn, they too witnessed the same gross unsanitary behavior. Neat atmosphere, good food, questionable preparation for sure! read more

My now wife and I stumbled onto Fig Bistro while walking around Biltmore Village doing some wedding planning for October 2012. We fell in love with the place and decided that we would like to have our rehearsal luncheon there. We contacted management and I will say that they were more than accommodating for what we needed. They even let us have the entire restaurant on a Friday afternoon to host the 40+ guests who were in attendance. As for the team, Treavis, Traci, and Heather could not have been more responsive and attentive before and during our event. The food was wonderful. Appetizers were waiting upon our arrival so no one went hungry. All of the guests raved about the food and atmosphere all weekend! The bar was well stocked and drinks were generous and served promptly all throughout the event. When we get back to Asheville (and any other time we are there in the future), we are definitely stopping by for another visit. Thanks to the Fig team for making our event so special! We enjoyed a wonderful meal at this quite Biltmore Village restaurant for my wife's 30th birthday over the weekend before Valentine's Day. I could speak in great depth about the food and the thoughtful attention to service that our server brought to our table, but highest praise is reserved for the front of the house. Calling for an early evening reservation in the middle of the same day, we had low expectations that we'd be seated. The restaurant was able to get us a table for 4 and our 8 month old. When asked directly "do you all 'deal well' with babies", the quick response was "of course - we're happy to have him." This was no appeasement. Our son - usually a happy and quite kid - decided he wanted to play and talk [loudly], much to the chagrin of the other tables. However, the host walked over and asked my wife if she would mind if she held our baby while we finished our meals. Ever the surprised parent, we felt this was much to good to be true and handed him off. For the next 20-30 minutes, our new friend held our son, walked him around the front of the restaurant, and generally rocked him into a state of unconsciousness. Add to this the fact that our host was herself at least 7 months pregnant and the moment was too good for us to ever forget the service and generosity of this great restaurant. read more

Small cafe that delivers some great dishes! Visited Fig on a Friday night without a reservation and was able to get a table within 30 minutes. The front of the house manager did a great job estimating the wait and remembering my name. While the cafe is very small and a bit too close for comfort, the outdoor patio looks like a better place to enjoy a meal with a bit more room and less noise. Inside the tables are packed in pretty tightly and it can get loud. But that doesn't take away from the fresh bread and olive oil to start, and the amazing macaroni gratin with side salad (that I tried thanks to many other Yelper recommendations). What a deal! $12 for a lusciously creamy macaroni dish with bacon, with a side salad it's a filling meal that's 1/2 the price of other entrees. Example, in comparison we tried their pork entree - which was a nicely crisp pork loin over collards and black-eyed peas. While a nice dish, it was double the price of the macaroni and still left my husband wanted to taste more an more of the macaroni. Would love to try more of their dishes next time, I'll just be sure to get a reservation next time. read more

The menu had something for everyone and is very thoughtfully assembled. I had reviewed the wine list before booking reservations and precisely because it was so thoughtful and expertly put together with affordable offerings not just very expensive bottles. Wines by the glass were also outstanding and representative of Italy, Spain, California, France and Oregon. Service was outstanding. As there were four of us we decided to order diverse items and all share them. We started with Maple Glazed Pork Belly, white bean puree, bacon and apple compote, which was outstanding as were the two salads: Celery and Gorgonzola Salad and Fall Greens, walnuts, croutons, goat cheese vinaigrette. The restaurant was sold out of Vietnamese Pho soup. We tried the baked macaroni and cheese, the Pork Loin with braised red cabbage, a Beef Ribeye with a bordelaise sauce, a North Carolina Stripped Bass. We finished with Panna Cotta topped with a tart orange sorbet and garnished with a delightful balsamic reduction and a decadent Pots De Crème (pot of cream with chocolate). One sure sign of the finest of restaurants is how well the vegetables are prepared. The Fig Bistro did an outstanding job and produced wonderful courses with artfully prepared complimentary vegetables cooked and seasoned to perfection. Portions were just enough and no more - where the emphasis is properly on Quality not Quantity. The small intimate ambiance and great service push this to the top of my list for dinning in Asheville. The 2007 Eberle Syrah was inky ripe berry, somewhat herbaceous and peppery and full bodied balanced with soft tannins with a gentle finish. Highly recommended - great place! read more

Our meals were delicious and imaginative ( my choice was scottish salmon on their yummy version of bubble and sqeek layered on a squash purée and Ollie's choice was veal on a bed of tiny crispy potato gnocchi). Finally made it back to Fig today (after a first-time visit in December) for the much-anticipated Brunch after church. The owner and I chatted before I departed after my December visit, she encouraging me to return for their brunch and their fired chicken, that people rave about. Fried chicken does it for me, so fi-nal-ly, I made it today...what, no fried chicken on the Brunch menu? Erk! I stayed anyway, since my first experience had been so positive. I figured something has to be worth diving into on the menu even if not fried chicken. Lovely staff person waited on me, attentive and friendly, and knowledgeable. All positive indicators, until time to review menu which began with a list of disclaimers and "we do not have.." or we have run out of..." Fine if one or two items, but folks, it was 6, 7 or 8 items. and the place was not full, at all, when I arrived (between 12:30 and 12:45; I learned later that they had not been very busy today after having a busy Saturday). Hmmm. I stayed anyway, the coffee was good, and items listed weren't effecting my order decision, until...the cut of meat would be different for the steak and eggs and the sauce was not bordelaise but chimichuri (sp). I ordered anyway (my mistake, read on to see why, if you're curious) and ate every crumb because the flavors were wonderful (mistake #2, read on...). And paired very well w/the Rhone-style Rose' (didn't want a full-bodied red at mid-day). Lovely staff person came by to check on me w/a "how is the steak?" - note: the rib-eye had been preempted by sirloin, and I had been told ahead of time. I said that the piece was tough and chewy at first bite, one side of the meat was almost well done, the other end was truly med-rare-to-rare "..and I had ordered medium". (If the chef had been on 'Chopped', he/she would have been chopped for 1) cooking one piece of steak so inconsistently and 2) for serving a tough, chewy piece of meat. I was asked if I wanted to send it back - another note: I am a big 'send it back if it isn't right" proponent, but today I said no. I was hungry; it was tasting good though portions were chewy and tough; and I said I would forge ahead but to please send my observations to the chef. And yes I agree with you reader, if you are there, that sending it back would have been the wiser thing to do. (Later, staff person tells me that the chef mentioned 'they' had been challenged by the butchering of this cut. I asked if it is butchered pre-purchase, she said "no, we do that in house"...imagine my surprise at this point, on so many levels. Further she mentioned that the kitchen was also flummoxed re: cooking it evenly....Excuse me?? I suggested that the cut they used for my order not be used for that again, at the very least.) I did succumb to dessert, at first thinking I would choose the chocolate pot de creme b/c I had it there in December and it is truly divine. But I was intrigued by the blackberry shortcake w/crème anglaise ice cream and a blackberry coulis of sorts. So ordered that and it was truly absolutely delicious. The shortbread cookie large enough to be split like a biscuit. I ladled the ample coulis over the top of it and over the ice cream. However, the dish, while very tasty, had only 5 blackberries - yes, 5 - and this was called a "Blackberry Shortcake." Guess what is very much in season here right now?? Blackberries!! They are definitely not in short supply. (In fact, I have bought some at local Farmer's markets that were as big as my thumb! and that melted in my mouth because they were so sweet.) And the sauce with this dessert is so thin, filling the plate to the edge, that the dish deserves to be served in a shallow and large soup dish, not on a dinner plate. But five blackberries, come on, the dish is priced at $8.00, so give the customer some blackberries please. A nice surprise was that I also served a small scoop of corn ice cream, an experiment by the chef being offered to Brunch customers. That was so creamy, smooth and flavorful, like a corn pudding had met whipped cream and collided with an ice storm. Oh my so very good...I could just imagine some caramel sauce drizzled over with w/sprinkles of sea salt, served w/a dark chocolate cookie. So, my visit today was not what I had expected, or anticipated, at all. I was charged in full for the lunch dish of steak and eggs, which, frankly, surprised me. I was not commenting on it earlier to "beg that question", but giving them a very honest observation. I was offered to have it cooked over, I opted not to. Yet, w/the butchering & uneven cooking confessional comments from the kitchen, seems that portion of the lunch would have been comp'd at the very least. Whatever the previous brunch menu's have been at Fig, such as the one the owner sent me home with after my December visit, I recommend a return to those time-honored items & to sending the staff to knife skills school, &/or ordering different cuts of beef for Brunch service. read more

This restaurant has to be the best restaurant in the US, let alone a small town in Asheville North Carolina! The owners are hard working and friendly and that reflects in the staff they hire and the amazing ambiance. They take pride in what they do and I would recommend visiting this restaurant if you can. We did not have a reservation and walked past a few places I had heard of, I'm glad we kept walking a little further because Fig was amazing. We started with the Pommes Fritas, a great choice. My wife had the duck, and said it was perfect. I had the bolognese and I loved it. A wide variety of styles cuisine on the small menu. They do a good job of searing the outside of meats with a tender inside (duck, pork tenderloin). Good bread basket. Friendly and attentive staff. My husband and I are visiting Asheville for the first time and it is the day before Thanksgiving. I booked reservations about a month ago after reading reviews and hoping for the best. We got it! We were welcomed warmly. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive, yet unobtrusive. The bread was blah .... nothing to write home about and I often wonder why a restaurant leads with something that is not really excellent. But .... that was the only misstep of the evening and soon to be forgotten. The PEI mussels were steamed in a broth flavored with ginger and coconut... the flavors and texture, perfect. I enjoyed a marvelous duck confit over frisee topped by, of all things, a poached egg. Delightful! My husband was happy with his salmon and I was in heaven with my choice of risotto done with sweet potato, sage and shiitaki. Finished our night with luscious pot de creme and a trio of ice cream (creme fraishe, spice and fennel). We merged our chocolate and ice cream and it was a beautiful marriage. I am slow to order an espresso because I am usually disappointed. The way this evening was going, I decided to give it a shot. While not "ristretto", it was nonetheless a very good espresso. Prices were fair. Portions were perfect. Nice wine selection. Wish I did not live 4 hours away! read more

This are first time in Asheville a friend of recommended we come here for dinner so glad we did the service and food was impeccable the best meal I've had in a long time. we ended up coming here twice on our vacation what a treat. I had the chicken and my husband had the rib eye the first night and the second night i had the risotto and my husband had the duck, so delicious we had two glasses of the house pinot noir very good. the second night we went the the owner was actually there cooking for the night and came out to talk with us very nice guy. read more
