I. Am. Not. A. Vegan. Treating my vegan mom to a Sunday lunch in Omaha can be a challenge for a few reasons... My husband's appetite for the standard meat/potato diet as well as finding something tasty that mom will enjoy, outside of our standard Asian cuisine (for her tofu) options. Leads us to hunt for something we can ALL enjoy, usually having some vegan/tofu and meat! It's a unicorn, but we found a few in SoCal (Native Foods and Loving Hut are two that our family would HIGHLY recommend, when in OC).
Fifth House opened recently in the Blackstone area and allowed us an opportunity we hoped for. Sundays are a limited Brunch menu, but appears that the full drink menu is available.
Between the three of us, we tried the chicken sandwich, burger and mom had a mango margarita.
The service was great! At noon we were only the second table seated and a few more filled as we waited for our food. When we left about an hour later, about 6 tables were full and being served. Drinks took a touch longer than we'd hoped, but it was obvious our sweet server was just learning the ropes. She did great!
It's an open floor plan (cafeteria style) with simple table seating, some have a wooden booth on one side. Each table has a little flower arrangement for a soft touch. It's a pretty stark industrial vibe, so the flowers help make it feel more 'human' I guess??!!
Overall the chicken sandwich was tasty, but my husband asked for the slaw on the side. Because, veggies. I'm sure it's more interesting with this component, to add crunch. My mom and I enjoyed his side slaw, the texture and pickled red cabbage with a nice light sauce was the most beautiful purple color. I'm certain it would be a great addition on the chicken sandwich as it's intended.
The "house fries" that came with all 3 sandwiches were also tasty and crunchy, they had a good crisp fried outer shell. The house made ketchup was hubs added hot sauce (Franks) and that was the trick for him.
Hamburgers were ok, the burger patty gets overwhelmed by the bun. It's pretty thin and not much flavor or texture. The elements are there, blue cheese had good flavor. Maybe more of that would add what's needed? I'm not a chef
My mom LOVED her marg!
So, yeah. It was tasty, but could be better. Hopefully they are working recipes to get excellent on this small menu. I'm sure they have vision--we want to support local. But this was hard at $17 for good ketchup and sides... read more
