It was our wedding and our original welcome party venue (Windwood Ranch - don't trust them!) canceled on us six weeks before the big day and we were panicked and worried about where to throw our Welcome Party. It was a nightmare we wouldn't wish on our worst enemy. Thankfully Field Recordings saved us! Brittany and all the staff are amazing and made us feel right at home. They helped us choose the perfect wines, rearranged their space to accommodate our guests, and basically made our dreams come true. If you want a place to throw a party this is the place to go! The location is perfect if you want to be in or near Paso Robles. Their wine is fabulous, especially the Foxie canned wine! Maybe we went on an off day. Maybe the bottles we tried were skunked. Who knows? I will say that the woman who conducted our tasting was friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly believed in the wines. That said, of the six we tried we only really liked the rose. The others ranged from fine to super weird and borderline non-drinkable. One--the Koligian?--was like eating a spoon of ground black pepper, from the bouquet to the finish. At least two of the wines we tried were so green as to be simply unpalatable. No thank you. I salute the winemaker for taking chances, but we will not be returning. read more

Yummy wine and knowledgeable, friendly staff. The story behind the wines and the significance of the labels is very engaging to listen to. There is a little italian market below with cheese, meats, sandwiches and chocolates that they let us bring up to eat with our tastings. Tried arranging a scheduled tasting for two couples. They never responded to emails. Stopped by without one and tried their line-up. Not very a compelling tasting for any of the four educated palates who each have extensive wine collections at their homes. Hostess was fine until it came time to purchase wine - then the money-grubbing behavior of this place kicked into high gear. We offered to purchase over $70 of wine if that would offset 2 of the four $10 tastings. We got an emphatic rebuff of our offer. As a result, we left without purchasing while the mercenary hostess mulishly collected our $40 in fees. We were the only people in the tasting room for about 45 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. Perhaps, word of the their poor customer relations is getting around. We didn't understand the business model that turns down $90 in sales/tasting fees for $40 in tasting fees. Sharp as marble!!!!!! Somehow, the lack of responsiveness to a written request and the treatment at the tasting was proof enough for us to not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Generally speaking, I am not a huge fan of California Chardonnay. Pour me a glass of Rombauer Chardonnay and watch me run screaming from the room. I lean more towards dry Chenin Blanc, Albariño, Falanghina, Picpoul, Vermentino, Torrontés, and Alsatian-styled Riesling than big, buttery wines with high alcohol and fruit-bomb flavors. But there are exceptions to the rule. Broc Cellars in Berkeley makes a wonderful, Chablis-like Chardonnay from the Michael Mara vineyard in Sonoma County. Ridge Winery in Cupertino makes a beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains estate Chardonnay, perhaps my favorite in the entire state. I have even recently tasted a very good Sierra Foothills Chardonnay from Hovey Winery in Murphys that is balanced, complex, clean, and refreshing. Field Recordings - whose tasting room is located in Tin City, mere minutes from downtown Paso Robles - makes two excellent Chardonnays, both as different from each other as you could possibly imagine. One is totally fun - a 2016 Pétillant Naturel Chardonnay that is fizzy and ciderlike in crispness. The other - a 2015 Spanish Springs Chardonnay - named for the Pismo Beach vineyard (near San Luis Obispo) where the grapes are sourced, is elegant and all grown up, aged gracefully not in oak barrels but in ones made from acacia wood. I have fond memories of eating acacia blossom honey from my grandparents farm, and some of my favorite European white wines from Alto Adige are also aged in acacia. Acacia trees are beautiful, and as it turns out, they also make great wine barrels. Who knew? What's interesting about this is that the wine takes on wood flavors and can complete secondary fermentation, creating that silky, smooth mouthfeel that most Chardonnay drinkers adore. But unlike oak, which can be heavily toasted and perfect for aging tannic red wines, acacia is more delicate, slightly smoky, and less heavily vanillalike in flavor. I found that it was perfect for the Pismo Beach fruit, which as the name suggests is really close to the Pacific Ocean, creating a classic cool climate growing region. I tried both the Pet Nat Chardonnay and Spanish Springs Chardonnay on a recent visit to Field Recordings, and they were my favorite wines of the flight. It was remarkable how wide-ranging these two wines were from each other, even though they came from the same grape varietal (just not from the same vineyard and likely were not the same Chardonnay clone). It was a testament to the experimental spirit and winemaking acumen of FR's team, led by head winemaker, Andrew J., and more than rewarded us for taking the time to pay the tasting room a visit. If you come, be sure to schedule a tasting next door, at Giornata. This spot, along with Field Recordings, is basically reinventing what it means to make wine in Paso Robles. And that's a reason to celebrate! Definitely a recommended stop the next time you are passing through this superb wine growing region on the Central Coast. read more

This is one of the best tasting rooms in tin city. They are fun, knowledgeable, down to earth, and care about the work they do. I love the youthful environment and forward thinking ideas about wine. I have never felt more comfortable at a tasting room, especially being a new wine drinker. Good wine, good music, amazing staff, and a beautiful tasting room. Would recommend to any and all of my friends and family. They are now doing a late night tasting every Thursdaynight 5-8 feb-march with a killer deal! Wow, this place. This was our last tasting of the weekend with a group of 14 parents and kids and we definitely saved the best for last (unintentionally so). Josh who was helping us was down to Earth, friendly and very knowledgeable. The wines here are unique, playful and delicious. Be curious. Don't prejudge. This winemaker and his terrific and knowledgeable tasting room staff are doing something worth exploring. I am a Bay Area person where urban/industrial wineries are a really important movement in compliment to the massif central of Napa/Sonoma, and it's great to see it making an impact in PR. It's a great space and compliments the values of the wine & winemaker. Good value wine, and something (and more than one something) for most palettes. Field Recordings is one of the more refreshingly unique wineries at the moment in all of California, the product of a one-in-a-million sort of serendipity in which a vineyard manager who was trained to grow and graft grape vines for others launched himself in his early 30s headfirst into the wine-making process, with a range of innovative and eccentric results that make wine tasting fun again. Fun in that Bonny Doon sort of way, back when Randall Grahm was on his first major rise to prominence. Fun in a playful, wine-in-cans sort of way. Fun in a Pétillant Naturel Chardonnay sort of way. Fun in a Salvador Dali on your Pinot Noir labels sort of way. Fun because the wines are well made, from unique sites in and around San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Fun because when you come for a tasting, you never really know what you are going to get. It's like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but with wine. My favorite FR wine is still the Jurassic Park Chenin Blanc, which was not available on the occasion of our first visit to their Tin City outpost, next door to Giornata. Neither was the Grenache rosé, but what was open for tasting was very, very good, if at the higher end of FR's price scale: limited lot Spanish Springs Chardonnay (aged entirely in acacia barrels) and Derbyshire Pinot Noir from tiny vineyards with extreme ocean exposure, producing really tight, structured, compelling wines. A range of Paso Robles reds filled in the rest. A $10 tasting fee is waived with a 2 bottle purchase, which is quite reasonable for the area, especially since you can also select from the Fiction line that is priced under $20, or opt for a great $20 Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet/Franc/Petit Verdot/Merlot blend, sourced from Santa Barbara rather than Paso, giving it earthier, smokier elements to balance out the fruit and tannin. The tasting room interior is cool and functional, with a large glass-topped tasting table where visitors gather around for pours from bottles or cans. Decor is fairly minimal, in keeping with the working winery, Tin City wine ghetto vibe. You can ask to tour the next-door wine making facility, filled to the roof with fermenters, barrels, tanks, hoses, forklifts, and who knows what else. Plus, if you've had your fill of huge Paso Robles wines for one trip, a few blocks away is Tin City Cider Co., where three local winemakers, including Field Recording's very own Andrew J., put their skills to good use making top-shelf alcoholic apple ciders as if they were making fine wine. Bear in mind that FR isn't a Napa style tasting room where you'll be lavished with attention and made to fall in love with the whole "wine country" idyll. This is a more "blue collar" (note the quotes here) kind of spot, where you won't feel bad about pouring out a wine that doesn't meet your fancy, where you can be judgemental about wine and not feel like you are committing a mortal sin, where you can find something special for under or around $30 that bears some of the maker's marks of a winemaker who knows what it means to get one's hands and fingernails dirty, who can crack open a beer, or uncork or unscrew a wine, gaze out into the parking lot outside the door, and ... remember how it all began. Wine - at its optimal best - is an endlessly repeated journey from grape to glass. Or can. Whatever. It's been part of human history for a really long time, and every once in a while, someone or something new comes along and writes a small chapter to add to that collective narrative. Field Recordings successfully pulls off good wine poured from a can. In fact, the pour out of the can is part of the charm in this Tin City tasting room. A nice variety running from a dry, sparkling Chardonnay (Pet Nat), to Pinots, Zins, and of course the wines from the can. read more

As someone else mentioned, we had to find someone to taste their wines. It almost seemed to be self serve. If that was the case, then it would be 5 stars! Ok just kidding. In all honesty, the wines are ok, nothing to want me to come back and buy. I did like their 4 pack of wines in a can, that's unique packaging. To me, the wine tasting experience is very important to have a knowledgeable person pouring, explaining the wines in detail, instead of an interruption in what they were doing.... Tin City is a very cool place and I can see it really growing and becoming a cool place to hang out. As far as wines from Field Recordings, I thought they were 3 stars but I deducted one star because the wine tasting was sub par. read more

Wow. If you are reading this, I envy you, because hopefully you are about to go and visit Field Recordings winery. We came across this winery today while poking around the area to see what new places have opened. We hit pay dirt when we stopped here. Normal hours are 11-5 but they were open at 10 because they were bottling. The winemaker, Andrew Jones, a self described field hand from way back , sources his fruit from great sites on the Central Coast. Great terroir often equals great wine, and Andrew doesn't miss a beat on turning well managed fruit into fantastic wine. "I don't want to sell a bottle of wine for over $30" is what he told me when we visited him on a blazing hot Saturday morning in August. Walking inside the tasting room, you are greeted with a visual treat, on the left side of use room stretches a chalkboard that described his many current bottlings, prodigious use of excellent adjectives describe his wines. On the right, you will see some beautiful photos of the vineyards that he manages, enlarged and stretched on a frame. The actual tasting room bar is a smart piece of work, stacks of his cases of wine with a wood frame and glass surface placed on top. The tasting fee is $10 but waived if (there is no "if" here, you will) you buy some vino. And you get to take home a nice tasting room vessel with the winery name on it. The entire experience is great, the wine cases have beautiful graphics of crows on them, the front door has a graphic of a flock of starlings, the whole experience is a visual and taste bonanza....lucky you!
